Taiwan's opposition parties are seeking to impeach the country's president and premier. This comes as both sides of the political aisle accuse the other of violating the Constitution.

00:28watchdog the Control Yuan start impeachment proceedings for Premier Zhu Rongtai.
00:34Both sides of Taiwan's political isles say the country is facing a constitutional crisis
00:40but for different reasons.
00:42At the heart of the matter is a local government funding law that the opposition held legislature
00:47passed.
00:48Zhu refused to countersign the bill, preventing it from coming into effect.
00:54It is an unprecedented move that no previous government has taken.
00:59Cabinet officials say that the bill is unconstitutional.
01:02Zhu Rongtai, according to the 7th Amendment of the Supreme Court, the law of the Supreme Court,
01:05has decided not to replace it.

01:39The problem is that Taiwan's constitutional court is paralyzed.
01:59It cannot reach quorum as there aren't enough sitting justices.
02:04The legislature has repeatedly rejected President Lai's nominees.
02:08That means constitutionally contentious matters cannot be ruled on, leading to the current
02:13impasse.
02:14Responding to the legislature's proposal to impeach Zhuo, the Cabinet's spokesperson said
02:19this.
02:20Taiwan Plus reached out to the presidential office about the TPP's plan to impeach Lai,
02:39but has not received a response as of airtime.
02:42With both sides pointing the finger at each other and no clear way forward, the constitutional
02:48conundrum facing Taiwan is getting more complicated with each passing day.
