00:00Tens of thousands of Year 12 students across Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT will
00:07today receive their ATAR results, marking one last milestone for this year's graduating
00:12class.
00:13Students in New South Wales now have access to their Australian Tertiary Admissions rank
00:17after the results were released at 9 o'clock this morning.
00:20It is a few hours yet for our Queensland students and Molly Slattery is standing by with the
00:24details for us in Brisbane.
00:26Now, Molly, we know there's been growing debate about the relevance of the ATAR, there's
00:30no doubt though that this is a big day for graduating students.
00:35It certainly is Gemma and as you mentioned our New South Wales and ACT students, for them
00:40the wait is finally over.
00:42Just a few minutes ago they would have received those ATAR results.
00:45For our graduates here in Queensland it's just a few more hours those results come out at
00:50midday local time so certainly a few anxious graduates no doubt.
00:54Now, the ATAR system, for those who haven't been hitting the books over the last 12 months,
00:59you may not be familiar with it, it's the Australian Tertiary Admissions rank.
01:02Now, an ATAR you can get anything from a 30 or less right up to a 99.5 and that scale ranks
01:09students against their peers and it's used to admit students to university but of course
01:13there are plenty of other ways that students can go to uni.
01:17We've been told here in Queensland today there will be 37 students receiving that
01:21top mark, that 99.95 grade so certainly an incredibly exciting day for many students and
01:28as you said Gemma, a really incredible final milestone in what has been a very long journey
01:33for these graduating students.
01:34And picking up on that debate about the relevance of the ATAR as you just said, there Molly there
01:39are other ways to get into university.
01:41There certainly are Gemma and it's an important reminder while today is a great opportunity
01:47to celebrate some really incredible achievements in ATAR results, it's also an important reminder
01:52that the ATAR result is certainly not a definitive measure of success.
01:57There are a multitude of ways for students to gain access to university if that's what
02:01they want to do but we know that tertiary education is not the be all and end all for many students.
02:07We know that recently, in recent years, an enormous amount of students have been gaining access
02:12to university without their ATAR, they've been using other admission criteria so it certainly
02:17is not the end of the road for any of those students and a really important reminder that
02:21they are young, they are brilliant and today is just the final step and the world is certainly
02:26at their feet.
