00:05Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is either lying or incompetent, Senator Rand Paul said

00:10after the official repeatedly changed his account of a lethal boat strike off Trinidad.

00:15The U.S. struck a suspected Venezuelan drug boat off Trinidad on September 2.

00:20Sources familiar with the operation told the Washington Post that Secretary Hegseth directed

00:24that everyone on board be killed.

00:27After the first Navy strike, two survivors remained.

00:30Admiral Frank Bradley reportedly followed Hegseth's orders, targeting and killing the survivors

00:36in a second strike.

00:37Hegseth first dismissed the report as fake news.

00:40He later admitted there was a second strike but shifted the blame to Bradley, saying it

00:45was the Admiral's decision.

00:47Admiral Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support.

00:53I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made, on the September 2 mission and all

00:58others since, he said.

01:00In a later press briefing, Hegseth changed his story, claiming he didn't stick around

01:04to watch the boat strikes.

01:06However, this contradicted his earlier Fox News statement that he watched it live.

01:11Hegseth had previously bragged about watching the strike in real time, saying, I can't disclose

01:15precisely how this went down, though he insisted it was precision.

01:19Reporters caught up with Paul in Washington D.C. where he blasted the Secretary.

01:24In this sense, it looks to me like they're trying to pin the blame on somebody else and

01:28not them.

01:29It was fake news.

01:31It didn't happen, Paul said.

01:33And then the next day, from the podium at the White House, they're saying it did happen.

01:38So either he was lying to us, or he's incompetent and didn't know what had happened.

01:43Well, he's in the last minute.
