00:00This is Tilly.
00:06Just packing up Tilly's bag now to take with us.
00:10It's suddenly feeling real.
00:13Her owners can no longer look after her.
00:17You just think you're going for a walk, don't you?
00:22It's not Tilly's fault.
00:27It's not our owner's fault either.
00:31It's okay.
00:38We're really going to miss that.
00:43But don't worry, this is a happy story.
00:48About good boys and girls who need somewhere else to live.
00:54No!
00:56And an amazing place.
01:00Come on then beautiful boy.
01:02That wants to stop them ending up in the doghouse.
01:05You're doing what's best for her, but you also know it hurts like hell.
01:09By finding them a new forever home.
01:12Wow!
01:14So join us as these national treasures...
01:18Good boy!
01:20...learn to love again.
01:22He's all yours.
01:23Really?
01:24Really.
01:25We are just, besides self, we're happiness really.
01:27It really touches you.
01:29It touches your heart.
01:30Bring the tissues.
01:32We were wondering if you would like to go forward with adoption today.
01:35Yes.
01:36Yes, we would.
01:37Yes, please.
01:39Because there will be happy cries.
01:42You think you should go fit in well, aren't you?
01:44Yeah.
01:45Yeah.
01:53In the heart of Nottinghamshire is the Gerry Green Dog Rescue Centre.
01:58With more and more people owning dogs in the UK, not every dog will see how it stays with the same owner.
02:05Sometimes old age, illness, death, or a relationship breakdown can get in the way of this cherished friendship.
02:13And that's when the Dog Centre steps in.
02:16This way.
02:18A lot of people think that the dogs are in here because they're bad dogs.
02:20They're not.
02:21It's just, unfortunately, they've found themselves in a really tricky time in their life.
02:26In the UK, the vast majority of dogs are still bought through dog breeders or private sellers.
02:31But here, the staff are dedicated to helping dogs who need to be adopted.
02:37So, the advantage of rehoming is that you're getting a bit more information about the dog.
02:42It's that lifelong support.
02:43It's the training.
02:45It's the assessments we do prior to the dog even coming home.
02:49That's just something that you don't get with other avenues.
02:52To ensure every dog ends up in a happy home, the Centre has a strict meet and match process to check each dog and new owner.
03:00We do have quite a vigorous process when it comes to matching the dog to the right family.
03:06Because, you know, when you're meeting a new dog, you're all excited.
03:09You get your heart set on that dog.
03:10And if it doesn't work out, then it can be quite an emotional situation for the family as well.
03:15So, we want it to be right first time.
03:17Hello, Joe Green Dog Rescue.
03:26Today, Deputy Manager Beth is on duty.
03:30We'll be in touch with you very soon then, okay?
03:32Bye.
03:34That was a call from family that are needing to rehome their dog, Tilly.
03:39She's a young dog that, unfortunately, they're not able to fully take care of anymore.
03:46Five-month-old Tilly is a very lively Jack Russell Cross.
03:50Are you ready? Go.
03:51Who's lived with Diane and her elderly mum, Joan, since she was a few weeks old.
03:59Good girl.
04:01I really wanted a rescue dog, an adult dog, but wasn't successful.
04:07So, I decided, okay, I'm going to plump for going for a puppy.
04:11So, I found Tilly.
04:13It was a lovely little Jack Russell mum.
04:16Tilly was the smallest and she was very, very sweet.
04:19Mum was with me and was instantly cuddling her.
04:23And we thought, maybe this was the right dog for us.
04:28Tilly quickly became part of the family.
04:30And walking her resulted in Diane striking up a relationship with Anthony.
04:37He was walking past my house.
04:40I was just cleaning the car.
04:42And I thought, hello.
04:44She looks very nice.
04:46A nice little doggy.
04:47We said hello, didn't we?
04:49And then the third occasion, I asked if she fancied a bit of company on the walk.
04:55And that was it, wasn't it?
04:57Tilly's been our matchmaker.
04:58So, that makes it even more tough to give her up.
05:04Oh, you and chewing.
05:05Ouch.
05:06Gently, gently.
05:08Gently.
05:10In the last four months, Tilly's grown much bigger.
05:13And stronger.
05:15She's about to sink her teeth into Anthony's ankles.
05:18Come here, sweetheart.
05:19I know you love to chew, but you need to chew the right things.
05:23Here.
05:24My mum is 81.
05:26She's, in the last, say, four weeks, become quite unsteady on her feet.
05:31And Tilly has gone from two and a half kilos to eight and a half kilos in two and a half months.
05:38She's absolutely grown and grown, hasn't she?
05:43Yes, she has.
05:44And she's adorable, but mum can't cope with her.
05:48She...
05:53It's now reached the stage where Diane can't risk leaving Tilly alone with her mum.
06:01This is where she will tear mum's skin.
06:05I can't have Tilly push her over and cause her to break her bone, break her hips.
06:10Yeah, okay.
06:11It's becoming really worrying for us, actually.
06:15She's the wrong dog for our environment.
06:21So hard to say, but she is.
06:27Yeah.
06:28I love her to bits, but she's just not right for us.
06:31I've made the wrong choice.
06:35You wait.
06:37As a result, Tilly needs to move out.
06:40Good girl.
06:42And hope that the dog centre can find her a new home as soon as possible.
06:49I think for Tilly's sake, it's the right thing to do right now.
06:52Give Tilly the right chance to find the right family.
06:56It's going to be a difficult thing for us to do.
06:59She's been with me from being such a tiny puppy.
07:03She's become so precious to me.
07:06I think that's it.
07:07Yeah.
07:08Before Tilly can be put up for adoption, she must be assessed by Beth and the team to help find her perfect new home.
07:24Puppies require a lot of work, a lot of training.
07:27They're very energetic as well.
07:28Especially, you know, past the tiny puppy stage where they get to a few months old.
07:33And also a lot of puppies can mouth.
07:36And we do sometimes find that elderly owners are getting a little bit injured from the mouthing due to the skin.
07:41Obviously, we've received the intake for Tilly and we know quite a lot about her from that.
07:52But do you want to just give me a run over of any important points you think it's good for us to know about her?
07:57She's a bit of a biter.
07:59Yeah, she's a bit of a nibble.
08:01She likes to nibble and she does break the skin.
08:03Her teeth are quite sharp.
08:05And she steals food.
08:07Oh.
08:08Okey-doke.
08:10The dog centre has large outdoor and indoor play areas where all dogs can be assessed.
08:16Go out this way.
08:18Welfare assistant Kim will be working with Tilly.
08:21As Tilly's a puppy, Kim's brought her inside where she can't run off.
08:26She's not quite comfortable yet, but obviously this is a new environment for her.
08:31If you scatter treats or if you, like, make games, especially for puppies, it's a brilliant way to tire them out without having them
08:39concentrating on you all the time.
08:41Which, especially for Tilly, I know in the previous home she was quite mouthy.
08:44So trying to get that attention away from you and your hands is fantastic.
08:50Ready?
08:51Find it.
08:53She's taking in more of the environment and calming herself down and becoming a lot more confident.
09:00Howie.
09:01Good girl.
09:02We're going to sit.
09:03Oh, amazing.
09:04It's so good as well that she can just sit and wait, especially for a puppy of her age.
09:10With the assessment complete.
09:12Beautiful.
09:13Tilly is ready to be added to the centre's online adoption list.
09:17Come on in. Let's go.
09:25Hi there, I'm Tilly. I'm a four-month-old puppy who has found myself looking for a forever home.
09:30I'm only young, so I'm looking for a family with experience of owning a puppy before to help me with my training.
09:36I'm a playful girl who loves following her nose and playing scent games to occupy my brain.
09:41If you think you have a Tilly-shaped hole in your life, give the Nottingham team a shout.
09:46Love and Licks, Tilly.
09:47A little girl, eh?
09:51Should be there.
10:00There we go. We're off.
10:03Every dog hopes to live out their days in a kind and caring home.
10:07But an estimated 660,000 dogs enter UK shelters every year.
10:12At the Nottinghamshire Rehoming Centre, a team of dog experts help find loving new families for dogs in need of adoption.
10:23Hey, darling.
10:25The latest arrival is Sydney, a cute little pug Jack Russell Cross.
10:30Be a good boy. Oh, one last thing. So his owners have sent his little backpack with his favourite toys as well.
10:41So they're all in here for him.
10:43Oh, bless him.
10:44There you go.
10:45Thank you. Come on, darling. Good boy.
10:50Sydney's current owner has very reluctantly put him up for rehoming after adopting him as a puppy.
10:56She chose Sydney because of the litter. He was the most calm and quiet and really gentle puppy and she'd wrote that on her assessment.
11:07And because she had a seven-year-old, it was essentially going to be a best friend for the seven-year-old.
11:13And they was that. They became best friends.
11:16His owner already had an older dog in the household and at first, he and Sydney got on well.
11:23But when the older dog needed to be neutered, everything changed and the two dogs struggled to get along.
11:31I have a multi-dog household myself and making that decision must be so difficult.
11:36I can appreciate it's not as if it's been a rash decision.
11:39She's worked with a behaviourist. As a dog owner, she's been so responsible.
11:44And she knows ultimately that Sydney will be rehomed quicker than her other dog in the home.
11:50Hopefully we can get him a perfect home where they can concentrate solely on him.
11:53While it's an uncertain time for Sydney...
11:57How you doing? You alright?
12:00..his owner has made sure he's all packed up and ready to move house, on a practical level at least.
12:06Shall we see what we've been packed? Are you having a look?
12:10He's got some food in there. She's also packed him his favourite toy.
12:14And things like this is really important as well because it will smell of the previous owner.
12:17Oh, hold on. It's like you're an evacuee.
12:32Before the charity can start looking for potential adopters...
12:36Good.
12:38..Kim needs to work out what kind of new home would be best suited for Sydney.
12:41When you're assessing a dog, you are assessing the type of dog and the type of home that would be best suited for that dog.
12:50It's so important to get the criteria right for a potential family that would adopt this dog...
12:56..because you want to set that dog up for success.
12:59You want it to work for a long time, not a short time.
13:03It's not respite care. It's a forever member of the family.
13:06Wait.
13:10Wait.
13:12It's a sad situation. It's sad for him.
13:15Good boy.
13:17Just to be without a family at such a young age.
13:21You've had your world turned upside down, haven't you?
13:24Hopefully it finds you a new home soon, hmm?
13:27Come on then.
13:29Hello, I'm Sydney. I'm a super sweet pug looking for my forever home.
13:43I already have my backpack packed and ready to go.
13:46I wouldn't like to live with another dog due to past experiences,
13:50but I'll happily go for walks with some calm doggy friends.
13:53I hope I'm the snuggle buddy you have always been looking for.
13:55Let's go. This way.
14:05The dog charity has been rehoming dogs for over 60 years.
14:11And whilst many of those canines have been much-loved pets,
14:17not all dogs have been raised in happy homes.
14:20Good girl.
14:21Lurcher Tanny's life was transformed thanks to the dog centre.
14:26She had a terrible start to life and had to be rescued from illegal hair courses.
14:32But things began to look better when she was adopted by recently retired Peter and his wife, Rosemary.
14:38I'd known my wife for a long, long time before we were married.
14:43We had grown together in an incredible relationship and that dog just slotted her way in.
14:50We took to Tanny because that was easy to do because she was a lovely dog.
14:55They thought they were offering Tanny a forever home, but tragically it wasn't to be.
15:02Just two years later, Rosemary died.
15:042014, my life changed and it was me and Tanny.
15:15Well, after that, we got on with it to a degree.
15:19Tanny became Peter's loyal companion, supporting him through this tough time.
15:23But as the years went by, his health also deteriorated.
15:29The walks got nearer and nearer because the angina that I have and the other things with my heart started playing up.
15:35My blood pressure went sky high and the medication wasn't controlling it again.
15:39They both moved in with Peter's daughter, Amy, so she could help.
15:42But then, in 2021, she became seriously ill herself.
15:53Tanny played a crucial role in Amy's recovery.
15:57Being with her, just stroking her, was therapy for me and my dad.
16:02That we knew and we just couldn't give her the attention that she deserved and the walks that she deserved because neither of us were able to.
16:10It just wasn't easy. Now, you've got two choices.
16:16You either have your animal put down, and that wasn't going to happen, or find somewhere else.
16:25Peter and Amy made the heartbreaking decision to put Tanny up for adoption.
16:31You're doing what's best for her, but you also know it hurts like hell.
16:34And it's hard. It's hard because they become such a huge part of your life.
16:42You can't imagine being without them.
16:49While the centre looked for new owners, Tanny was put into foster care with 67-year-old Colin.
16:54It was only meant to be for a few days.
16:58Jerry Green phoned me up and said, we found a home for her.
17:03Could you bring her in on next Saturday?
17:05So I said, yes, okay, fair enough.
17:07Drove her over to the dog rescue people.
17:10She was all curled up in the back seat of the car, and she wouldn't get out.
17:14And I was kneeling by the side of the car, trying my eyes out, trying to get this dog out of the back seat.
17:20It was making it worse, because she wouldn't come.
17:23So, eventually we got her out. I was in such a state.
17:27And it took me a good ten minutes to get my act together again.
17:31Colin was devastated, but the next day, he got another call from the charity with some surprising news.
17:39People phoned me up and said, Tanny's absolutely fine, but the lady who adopted her can't keep her.
17:44Would I like to take her back to foster her again?
17:48This time, Colin was taking no chances.
17:51Time for little walkies.
17:53Colin adopted Tanny, and since then, the pair have been inseparable.
17:56Come on, that's it.
17:57When she officially became mine, and I signed the adoption papers, it was just such a sense of relief.
18:03Knowing that there was going to be nobody else saying, oh, can I take her on please?
18:08And I'd have to go through that heartache again.
18:11Good girl.
18:13Knowing that she came from a family who loved her, makes me feel that I can continue supporting her.
18:19And making her feel loved, and safe, and secure.
18:22What she deserves.
18:24Come on, this way. Come on.
18:25I know, this is exciting.
18:28I know that the pair of them I have in the life that I had with her, and can't get better than that.
18:35Also looking for a new family is Tilly, a five-month-old Jack Russell Cross, who's become too big and boisterous to continue sharing a home with her owner, Diane, and her elderly mum, Joan.
19:01For now, Tilly has been living at the dog centre, and has been on the adoption waiting list for just over a week.
19:08Today, things are looking up.
19:11Hiya, are you all right?
19:12Hiya, are you all right?
19:13Hiya, are you all right?
19:14It's Josh and Chloe to see you, Tilly.
19:16Lovely.
19:17Do you want to go and take a seat, guys?
19:18Perfect. Thank you very much.
19:19And we'll be out with you shortly, all right?
19:20Cheers.
19:22I started looking for dogs probably a few weeks ago, just kind of sending links to see how Josh felt about it. We obviously came across Tilly. She's very cute.
19:35After wading through a lot of unsuitable applications, the staff think Chloe and Josh could be a match for Tilly.
19:43Hi.
19:44Did you want to follow me and meet Amanda?
19:46On paper, at least.
19:48OK.
19:51Have you had a pup before?
19:53We had one from a similar age to one of four months.
19:56Yeah, OK.
19:57And what we sort of took on from an old neighbor as well.
20:00Oh, fab.
20:01So we've been there.
20:02Yep.
20:03Yep.
20:04Let's have a quick look.
20:05So was it a bulldog that you had before?
20:06Yes.
20:07Old English.
20:08Was it?
20:09Oh, wow.
20:10So we had a previous dog called Isla, who was an old English bulldog.
20:14Yep.
20:15We adopted her at four months old as well, so we're similar age as Tilly.
20:20We recently lost her due to cancer.
20:25She was only five and a half, so it was a bit of a shock for us both really.
20:30The house has just not been the same.
20:32Yeah.
20:33So we've only sort of just opened up the door to another dog.
20:36Yeah.
20:37And I'm sure it's going to be exciting, but also emotional as well.
20:43So you fancied a bit of a change?
20:46Yeah, we needed something to keep up with us a bit in camping and going on our walks
20:51and stuff, didn't we?
20:52Yeah.
20:53Is that what sort of first drew you to Tilly?
20:54And the ears.
20:55Yeah.
20:56The pictures were lovely, weren't they?
21:00Yeah, she's a super cute girl.
21:02Right, should I go grab Tilly and then you take Chloe just to the training bar?
21:05I'll take them down to the training bar.
21:06Let's go.
21:07Let's go.
21:08Meeting Tilly feels very exciting.
21:10There we go.
21:11Could be a lot more active than what we're probably used to, but that's what we're looking
21:16for.
21:17OK, I will go and let Lauren know that you're ready to meet Tilly.
21:22Lovely.
21:23OK, have fun.
21:26This meet is a big opportunity for Tilly.
21:29While Chloe and Josh know she needs training, the staff are hoping her excitable nature doesn't
21:35put them off.
21:36I know.
21:38Is that hair that I can hear?
21:39Yeah.
21:40We're very excited.
21:41Anxious, excited.
21:42Yeah, there's a number of emotions.
21:43A lot of anticipation.
21:44Yeah.
21:45Oh, man, so sweaty.
21:46Get them on then.
21:47Here she comes.
21:48So this is Tilly.
21:49Hello, Tilly.
21:50She's likely to be very excited.
21:51Hello.
21:52Oh, you're lovely.
21:53Oh, all the kisses.
21:54Hello.
21:55Are you sort of happy for me to let her off, please?
21:56Yeah.
21:57Enjoy all the cuddles to yourself.
21:58Here you go.
21:59Oh, straight to the door.
22:00Straight to the door.
22:01Yeah.
22:02Yeah.
22:03Oh, okay, that's lovely.
22:04So this is Tilly.
22:05Hello, Tilly.
22:06She's likely to be very excited.
22:08Hello.
22:09Oh, you're lovely.
22:10Oh, all the kisses.
22:13Hello.
22:14Are you sort of happy for me to let her off, please?
22:19Yeah, yeah.
22:20Enjoy all the cuddles to yourself.
22:22Here you go.
22:23Oh, straight to the door.
22:27Straight to the treat for the toys.
22:28If you guys are happy, I'll leave you to it for a little bit.
22:31Does that sound good?
22:32Yeah.
22:33Fab.
22:34Definitely.
22:35Enjoy.
22:37Tilly.
22:38We do need to take a step back and leave the potential adopters to spend some time with
22:44the dog and that's to make sure that it is going to be the right match for both the
22:48dog and the adopter as well.
22:50Are you a good girl already?
22:52She's so funny.
22:55What else are you looking for?
22:57Oh.
22:58Most dogs do take a little bit of time to come round to new people, new situations.
23:03Tilly.
23:04Hi.
23:05Wasn't the case with Tilly.
23:06What are you doing?
23:07Aw.
23:08Aw, she's just a bundle of energy.
23:11Yeah, she's going to be so much fun.
23:13The meet seems to be going brilliantly.
23:16But Amanda and Lauren can't take anything for granted.
23:20Such a friendly little thing.
23:22Hello.
23:23Sit down then.
23:24Maybe too friendly at times.
23:26She definitely needs some training.
23:27Yeah.
23:28Sit.
23:29Sit down.
23:30Right.
23:31Shall we see how she's getting on?
23:33See what they think.
23:34Hi.
23:35Hello.
23:36How's it going?
23:37Amazing.
23:38Yeah.
23:39Yeah.
23:40Do you like her?
23:41Yeah.
23:42How could you not?
23:43She's lovely.
23:44Good girl.
23:45Tilly appears to have won over Chloe and Josh.
23:46But is it enough?
23:47Right.
23:48Follow me.
23:49As a puppy, Tilly will need a lot of training.
23:52And the sooner the better.
23:53It's a lot for the couple to take on.
23:56Okay, so how do you think that went?
23:58Good.
23:59Good.
24:00Good.
24:01Good.
24:02Good.
24:03Good.
24:04Good.
24:05Good.
24:06Good.
24:07Good.
24:08Good.
24:09Good.
24:10Good.
24:11Good.
24:12Good.
24:13Good.
24:14Good.
24:15It went quite well.
24:17Yeah.
24:18We enjoyed it.
24:19Yeah.
24:20Yeah.
24:21It's been good fun.
24:22That's great news.
24:23What are your thoughts on obviously her energy levels and managing her at home?
24:26Happy?
24:27Yeah.
24:28I think so.
24:29I'm happy.
24:30I lovedMo.
24:31You guys look really happy, and Tilly looked really happy with you, she was really comfortable,
24:32and we think you're a great match for her.
24:33Lovely.
24:34So.
24:35Yeah, we do.
24:37Would you like to put a reserve on her?
24:40Yes.
24:41Yeah.
24:42Please?
24:43Please.
24:44That's it, well let's go, show you out.
24:47Because Tilly's not house trained,
24:49Chloe and Josh will need to puppy proof their house
24:51before taking her home.
24:53When potential adopters do go home,
24:56they do have to consider everything about their life.
24:59We put our heart and soul into dogs
25:02and making sure that they're going to their forever home.
25:05So it can be quite a nervous time really,
25:08even if it's just overnight.
25:10The thought of somebody saying no to the dog,
25:13it's just, it's a scary time.
25:23At the dog center in Nottinghamshire,
25:25there's a constant flow of dogs who need rehoming.
25:29You coming then, let's go.
25:32One of those in need of help is nine month old pug, Sydney.
25:39Sydney kept falling out with his owner's other dog,
25:42leaving no choice, but to separate them.
25:46Sydney's situation is really, really sad.
25:49Sometimes dogs just don't get on.
25:52It's a really difficult decision to have to make
25:54and I can't imagine being in that position myself,
25:56having two dogs as well.
25:57So, erm, I really feel for the owner.
26:13Today, Sydney has a date with a potential new owner.
26:18Hi, I've come to see Sydney. I'm Charlie.
26:20Hi, yeah, we've been expecting you.
26:22If you want to take a seat and Beth will be with you shortly.
26:24Brilliant, thank you.
26:2623-year-old Charlie is a teacher who spotted Sydney
26:30whilst browsing the charity's adoption website.
26:33I'm really excited.
26:35I hope we gel well and I want just excited to meet his bubbly personality.
26:41Hiya, you must be Charlie.
26:42Yeah, hiya.
26:43Hello, I'm Beth.
26:44Hiya.
26:45Do you want to come in and meet Kim as well?
26:47My work schedule's recently changed, so I'm home quite a lot.
26:51So it'd be nice to have company.
26:53I feel a bit lost when I'm on my own.
26:56Do you want to just tell us a little bit about yourself?
26:58Any previous experience you've got around dogs?
27:01My family have always had dogs.
27:02We've had a chocolate lab, we've had a sprocker,
27:05where we've also had a black lab.
27:07Sydney popped up on my phone and it was love at first sight.
27:11I know that sounds so cliché, but it was.
27:14It was his eyes.
27:16He just looked a bit cheeky.
27:18So I think when I see him, I just hope he comes up and wants a fuss.
27:23If you're happy and you're happy Kim, I'd say let's head on down.
27:29I've not gone into this all guns blazing.
27:31I think it's more, I've reached a maturity level
27:35and it's now time for a dog.
27:38Come on in.
27:41Sydney has been on the adoption list for a few weeks now.
27:44Your boy.
27:45But this is his first meeting.
27:48And if you want to take yourself a seat on the bench over there,
27:51Kim will be in shortly with Sid as well.
27:53Thanks.
27:53All right.
27:55I don't want to jinx it.
27:57I'm hoping it all goes well.
27:59Sydney, you coming?
28:01I've actually already started buying little things.
28:05I've bought a toy for Sydney.
28:07I'm hoping he'll like me because at the end of the day,
28:11the dog makes the choice, not the human.
28:16Come on in.
28:17Let's go.
28:18I don't know how a dog might react.
28:20They might try and avoid you.
28:22They might run away or they might stick to you like glue.
28:26You don't know what's going to happen.
28:28Come on, Sid.
28:29What's this?
28:30If I have a look.
28:35Hello.
28:36Hello.
28:37So what I'll do is I'll let him sniff, yeah?
28:39Yeah.
28:39Oh, God.
28:42Hello.
28:43What's this?
28:45A lot of people have this misconception that when they're going to meet a dog, that they're
28:49potentially going to adopt, they're going to get this huge, like, reunion, like, thank
28:53you for saving me.
28:54It doesn't always work like that.
28:57I bought his little backpack as well.
28:58And then here, there's his little caterpillar toy.
29:03Thanks.
29:04I'll pop them down there.
29:06Sidney, what's this?
29:08Sid.
29:09Sidney.
29:10I need to make sure that Charlie is 100% the right match for him.
29:14And if she isn't, then Sidney won't be going home with her.
29:17Sidney, what's this?
29:19What's this?
29:20Come here, then.
29:22Hello.
29:23What's this?
29:26Come here, look.
29:27Come here.
29:28Come on.
29:30Hello.
29:31If you're comfortable, I'll step out.
29:34Is that all right?
29:35Yep.
29:35What's this?
29:37Oh, that's for you.
29:39Have you got a new toy?
29:42Oh, that's nice, because he's engaging with her a lot more now.
29:44You like that?
29:46Yeah.
29:47I was initially a little bit worried because Sidney didn't want to be fussed, and Charlie,
29:54bless her, was trying to have that engagement of fuss, but it wasn't the right time.
29:58Oh, what's that?
29:59Go get it.
30:02He's loving that toy, isn't he?
30:03Yeah.
30:05She's seen that he has got that slightly more active side as well.
30:08Yeah.
30:09With pugs, it can go one way or the other, can't it?
30:10Absolutely.
30:12Sit, sit.
30:13Good boy.
30:14Go get it.
30:15God, he's fast for a pug, isn't he?
30:17He is.
30:18He can move.
30:20Go get it.
30:22You're a good boy.
30:23And she's using the treats, which is nice.
30:26I think it massively helps that he's a foodie.
30:29Sit.
30:30Good boy.
30:32Oh, what a good boy.
30:39Hello.
30:39How are we getting on?
30:40Barely well, I think.
30:42Oh, amazing.
30:44The meat seems to have gone well.
30:46Shall we go for a walk?
30:47Come on, then.
30:48Good boy.
30:55But that doesn't necessarily mean Beth and Kim think Charlie is the right new owner for Sydney.
31:01Take his little backpack with us.
31:03He's coming.
31:07So I did have a little concern, and that was that Charlie was maybe being a bit too handsy with him.
31:13She was reaching over, trying to fuss him, and he was backing away.
31:17So, yeah, I was a bit worried how that was going to affect Sydney.
31:23It would be a bit heartbreaking if we weren't a match, but everything happens for a reason.
31:29Hello.
31:30Do you want to come on in and we'll have a little chat?
31:32Yeah.
31:34How did you feel it all went?
31:36I think it was quite natural.
31:38He's playing with his ball, wanted his treats.
31:40He felt in that moment, oh, he could be mine.
31:44This could be us.
31:45Like, from what I'd read online, it was, oh, I'll have a bit of a play and then a snooze.
31:52Definitely no snooze.
31:54Crazy little pug, full of energy.
31:57He's got this funny look where he goes a bit bog-eyed with his tongue out, and it's quite funny.
32:03A great little chap.
32:04We felt that it's gone well, but we don't want to make a rash decision today.
32:09It's been lovely to meet you.
32:10You too, Azal.
32:11Lovely.
32:12I don't blame new owners at all for meeting the dog and wanting to take them home there and then.
32:18But as a rescue organisation, it's really important that we follow certain processes to make sure we ensure that home is absolutely the home that that dog needs.
32:29I'll be a bit gutted if I don't get him.
32:31I think we had a really good bond.
32:34It's just fingers crossed at this stage.
32:36Five-month-old Tilly is being put up for adoption.
32:50Tilly has become too big and strong to continue living in the same house as her owner Diane's elderly mum, Joan.
32:59It looks like the charity has found a new home for her.
33:03So now it's time for Diane to say goodbye.
33:06It's always really, really difficult for everyone involved.
33:12It's a very emotional day, but it's really, really important as staff here that we make them feel supported, we're empathetic and we help them realise that they are doing the right thing for them and the dog.
33:23I did want to ask if you had any questions for ourselves.
33:26Is there anything you wanted to know?
33:28When we leave her with you today, will you be giving us any updates or is this just it?
33:36We are more than happy to have as many conversations as needed to update you on how she's doing.
33:42That's absolutely no problem.
33:44We do usually leave it to the owners to contact us purely because some people...
33:49You are a funny little thing, aren't you?
33:51Look at you prancing around with your harness.
33:54Yes.
33:54Some people like to hear a lot of information and some people don't.
33:58That for me would be closure.
34:02What's this?
34:03Go.
34:04Go get it.
34:05Come on.
34:06Go.
34:07You got it.
34:08Good girl.
34:08Good girl.
34:10Okay, sweetheart.
34:12Wow, this is the hardest part because she doesn't know what's going to happen.
34:17And I do.
34:21No, and I wish you could understand so I could tell you and explain to you.
34:26Yes, I do.
34:27Because I've got to leave you.
34:29Yes, you're going to find the right family.
34:31You are, you are, you're going to find the right place to go and have a lovely time, aren't you?
34:42Okay, enough.
34:43It's always difficult to watch, watch people go through those emotions.
35:12Oh, it's okay.
35:16Clearly been a really, really difficult decision for them to make.
35:19But I think they're doing the right thing.
35:24It's in the best interest of the dog that they make this decision now rather than wait until it becomes too much.
35:30The sooner we can get her settled into a new home where she's going to have that stability and training that she really needs, the better.
35:37Thank you so much.
35:39Bye-bye.
35:39Bye.
35:42Saying goodbye to Tilly was tough.
35:54But at least she has a good home to go to.
35:57Two days ago, Tilly met with Chloe and Josh.
36:01It was a match made in heaven.
36:03Hi there.
36:04Let's come and Josh to see Tilly.
36:05Lovely, if you guys want to take a seat.
36:07Lovely.
36:07Thank you very much.
36:08Now the couple have returned and that can only mean good news.
36:13Who's this?
36:14Hello.
36:16Well, I think she recognises you.
36:19Hello.
36:19Oh my goodness.
36:21Are you excited?
36:23Are you ready to go home?
36:25I think it's fair to say she's pretty comfortable around you both, isn't it?
36:29She's not at all worried.
36:32Lots of kisses.
36:34She says, let's go.
36:35Come on then.
36:36Let's go.
36:37Let's go.
36:37You go first, Tilly.
36:40After you.
36:42It's an ecstatic moment when a dog and a new potential owner come together and it fits so beautifully.
36:49It really is the absolute high of this job.
36:52So here is the paperwork to make it all very official.
36:55Yes, do you want to sign it?
36:57Yes.
37:02Perfect.
37:03And that is that.
37:05There you go.
37:06She's all yours.
37:08Oh, I know.
37:10It's so exciting, isn't it?
37:13Put your paw for it on it too.
37:15That's it.
37:15Tilly signed it too.
37:18So I think it might be time to get her loaded in the camper and get you on your journey.
37:23Let's go.
37:24Come on, Tilly.
37:24Let's go.
37:27It's very exciting to be taking her home.
37:30Yeah.
37:31I think she's going to fit in well, aren't you?
37:33Yeah.
37:35Very excited.
37:36I think she remembered who we was.
37:39So it was quite nice, actually.
37:44Thank you, guys.
37:44Thank you very much.
37:51So cute.
37:53Lovely.
37:53Bye-bye.
37:54Bye-bye.
37:55Bye-bye.
37:55Bye-bye.
37:55Bye-bye.
37:56Bye-bye.
37:57Bye-bye.
37:57Bye-bye.
37:58Bye-bye.
37:59Bye-bye.
38:00Bye-bye.
38:01Bye-bye.
38:02Bye-bye.
38:03Bye-bye.
38:04Across the country, dog charities receive hundreds of calls every day from people no longer able
38:10to care for their family pet.
38:14And at the Nottinghamshire Centre, on average, they re-home a dog a day.
38:18So it's not surprising that staff are keen to encourage would-be owners to adopt rather
38:24than shop for a puppy.
38:27The main benefit of rescuing a dog is the fact that you're ultimately giving them a brand
38:33new start.
38:33You know, when you're taking your dog out for a walk, you can proudly say, this is my rescue
38:37dog.
38:38I've rescued them from, you know, maybe a not very nice scenario.
38:42And I'm proud to say that, you know, she's in a forever home now.
38:49One of those looking for a forever home is nine-month-old pug, Sydney.
38:56It's been a week since this pup had his first date with 23-year-old Charlie.
39:00So what I'll do is I'll let him sniff.
39:02Sydney, what's this?
39:04Sydney.
39:06While Charlie was keen, dog welfare assistant Kim was concerned.
39:12Charlie was maybe being a bit too handsy with him.
39:15She was reaching over, trying to fuss him, and he was backing away.
39:19But now Sydney has a second date.
39:26Morning.
39:27The dog centre has invited Charlie back to see if those initial concerns persist, or
39:33if Charlie and Sydney can make the perfect pairing.
39:36Hi, Charlie, you all right?
39:38Yes, thank you.
39:38Are you?
39:38Yeah, not too bad.
39:39Do you want to come in?
39:40Yeah, brilliant.
39:42I'm still nervous because I don't know what's going to happen, whether he's coming home with
39:47us or if I've not been successful.
39:50Good lad.
39:52I'm happy to see him again, definitely.
39:54See his little cheeky face.
39:57Hello.
40:00Hello.
40:02I've got a couple of treats.
40:03Thanks.
40:04Come on then.
40:06What's this?
40:06What's this?
40:06What's this?
40:07Good boy.
40:09That was nicer than last weekend.
40:11They're taking treats.
40:12Yeah, he is.
40:13Using a much softer mouth now.
40:15Good boy.
40:16Hello.
40:17He was a bit worried about whether she was going to give him that space and allow Sydney
40:23to come to her.
40:24So, it was clouding the decision a bit on whether it was going to be a successful match.
40:28Wait.
40:29Go get it.
40:32Good boy.
40:33Oh, he likes a tugging.
40:36Sit.
40:38Sit.
40:39Sit.
40:41Sit.
40:41Sit.
40:43That's broken.
40:44Yeah, just pop the toy on the floor for him because he probably just wants to take
40:48himself off to his bed.
40:49Yeah.
40:49Calm down.
40:49So, if you find that he starts, yeah, hanging around and mouthing,
40:53he's just getting a little bit worked up.
40:58That's right, if you just let him have it, he'll play that.
41:00Just leave him to it for a minute. Yeah.
41:02Sydney and Charlie are clearly getting on,
41:05but while playtime has been a success,
41:07Kim and Amanda still need to see more.
41:10I think we should go for a nice walk in the woods if you're happy.
41:13Yeah. Yeah, so I will pass you his lead if you want to clip him up.
41:16Let's go.
41:19Come on, you. Come on, boys. Let's go. Good boy.
41:24This might look like just a relaxing walk.
41:27What's that? Oh, nice.
41:29See, that's good, him sniffing the environment.
41:32But Kim and Amanda want to see how Charlie copes
41:34with controlling Sydney on a lead.
41:37He seems a lot more calmer this time. He definitely is.
41:40100% is that he's settled. Still raring to go.
41:43100%.
41:44Before they decide whether or not she's the right person
41:47to be Sydney's new owner.
41:55So how do you feel it's gone today compared to the last meet?
41:59I think last week his arousal level was so high.
42:02Sid, what's up with you?
42:03And I feel like today he struggled a bit with his impulse control.
42:06OK.
42:08But he's been a lot more patient, he's a lot more settled with her.
42:12After weighing everything up,
42:14Kim and Amanda have made a decision.
42:17Come on, then.
42:19Come on, Sid.
42:20Good boy.
42:22Hi, Sid.
42:23Hello.
42:25So, Amanda and I have had a chat.
42:31So, if you would like to,
42:34Sydney is all yours.
42:35Really?
42:36Really.
42:37Sid, shall we go home?
42:39I will take that as a yes.
42:40I think he's going to be very happy with you.
42:45Shall we take your bag and go home?
42:47Looks like a yes from Sid.
42:48Shall we go home?
42:50Oh, I think you're going to have an amazing life together.
42:52I think we are.
42:53Well, if we can head back to the centre then,
42:54we'll get some paperwork finalised.
42:56Brilliant.
42:57And we'll send you home.
42:58Shall we go home, Sid?
42:59Oh, ready?
43:00Shall we go home?
43:01After you.
43:02Sydney has found his forever home.
43:32wiederher,
43:36you're going home.
43:37Has a good one.
43:38Has a good one.
43:39I'll see you at the end.
43:43You're going home.
43:44I'll see you at the end.
43:47Oh, what a good one.
43:49The end.
43:50Love.
43:51You're going home.
43:53And I'll see you at the end.
43:55OK, so if you want to go home.
43:57The end is...
