00:00Underneath our planet's crust lies the mantle and the Earth's outer and inner core, all composed of
00:09molten rock and other elements. But now experts say, despite what we've believed for hundreds
00:13of years, there might be yet another layer deep under our feet. Joanne Stevenson, a geophysicist
00:18with the Australian National University, and her team made the discovery, using computer algorithms
00:23that are able to sift through literally thousands of inner core possibilities using years of seismic
00:28data. And they found that there may have been two distinct cooling events in our planet's
00:31history, meaning that beneath the inner core lies yet another core, possibly comprised of
00:36different materials and having a different temperature. With Stevenson saying about the
00:40find, quote, the details of this big event are still a bit of a mystery, but we've added another
00:44piece of the puzzle when it comes to our knowledge of the Earth's inner core. Experts say this
00:48new theory could explain why researchers continue to find inconsistencies with regards to our
00:53current inner Earth models. With Stevenson adding that we might have to start rewriting our
00:57geology textbooks.
