Kim Petras opens up about ICY, her new music being very different from her current work, Quentin Tarantino being an influence, and reacts to the Nikkietutorials drama.
00:00Hey guys, we are here with none other than Kim Petros and you have got to first of all check out her music video for Icy after you watch this video, of course.
00:22And we're gonna talk all about her tour, she's going to Europe and of course you can catch her at Coachella.
00:29So first and foremost, welcome to Hollywood Life, we're so happy to have you.
00:33Thanks, thanks for having me.
00:34Of course, especially before you jet off to some Paris Fashion Week to, you know, get in all the high fashion and everything.
00:42First and foremost, let's talk about Icy and the new music video.
00:46So the song is about a breakup and kind of coming out on the other side of it like better and stronger and cooler and all of the better things.
00:54So yeah, it's just kind of me kind of turning bionic.
00:57I'm in like this crazy glass box thing, it's pretty cool and then it fills up with water.
01:04I'm covered in glitter, I have crazy contacts in, bunch of looks, bunch of different colors and vibes.
01:11When you're creating music, do you have the visuals in your mind already as you're creating?
01:15Yeah, sometimes I do. Sometimes I do see like whole things and settings or colors or I often get really inspired by my outfits.
01:24Wearing something and then I like write a song about what I'm wearing.
01:27I love that.
01:28Yeah, so I feel like I often like have to like dress myself up to like write a good song.
01:33I love that.
01:34Because like it takes me somewhere else.
01:36But yes, like I see like colors sometimes and so I get inspired by like watching movies and like put the two together.
01:43So yeah, all kinds of visuals.
01:45We were talking a little bit before the cameras were rolling about one of your biggest inspirations, Britney Spears.
01:50Yes.
01:51She is why you learned English and how you learned English.
01:54Explain that to me a little bit.
01:56So I would literally record Britney Spears interviews and replay them over and over again.
02:03That was like one of the few channels that was English in Germany.
02:07Okay.
02:08Because I'm born and raised in Germany.
02:09Yeah.
02:10And there were subtitles under it and I would just over and over watch it again until I understood what she was saying.
02:16So yeah, that was my cool hobby as a kid.
02:20I love it.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Thanks, Britney.
02:23Thanks, Brett.
02:24I owe it all to you.
02:25Well, and so now you're kind of like the modern day Britney.
02:28I mean, you have this pop sound, but also it kind of jumps into a little bit of electro pop and you kind of create your own thing.
02:36Who else is inspiring you and your music right now?
02:38Oh, I feel I feel constantly like really inspired by Madonna.
02:42I love Madonna.
02:43I think she's like one of the greatest ever.
02:45Yeah.
02:46I've been actually listening to a lot of Kate Bush.
02:50I had never been into her.
02:52Like I knew her songs and I liked them, but I never like listened to like albums and stuff.
02:57And I watched like a documentary and I got super in there and now I'm like really obsessed, especially with like running up that hill song.
03:04Like it's the 80s.
03:06Love it.
03:07Like super power song.
03:10I'm really inspired by designers, I would say.
03:13Like I watched like a bunch of interviews of like designers that I look up to.
03:18I'm super obsessed with Karl Lagerfeld, obsessed with John Galliano.
03:23And yeah, I feel like that direct.
03:26I love watching like directors interviews, too.
03:28I love like watching Tarantino interviews, Spielberg interviews, all of that.
03:33I love watching interviews in general.
03:34So this is tight.
03:35No, you watch your own interview.
03:38I'm watching myself and that's what inspires me.
03:41I love it.
03:43You're studying geniuses.
03:45That's what it seems like.
03:48And to be, you know, a genius in their craft.
03:51Is that kind of your goal?
03:52Like you are mastering a craft.
03:54Thanks.
03:55Yeah.
03:56That's the goal for sure.
03:57Yeah.
03:58I feel like every time I, my only goal ever is to like be better than the last thing that
04:03I've done.
04:04And that's just like kind of what I'm measuring my growth as an artist as.
04:09So yeah.
04:10And like also I'm just so into songwriting.
04:13Like that's why I do what I do.
04:15Like I love writing songs.
04:16Like my way into the whole industry was writing songs for other people first and pitching songs
04:22and doing commercials and doing songs for movies and before I ever had like a shot at being an artist.
04:28And now obviously it's, it's, it's a lot of things because also I want to be a great performer.
04:34I want to be a great vocalist, all of those things.
04:36So yeah, I feel like this, I put my first single out like two years ago and now I just did like my third tour last year.
04:44It's unbelievable.
04:45Yeah.
04:46I mean 2019 I feel like was just huge for you.
04:48But even just thinking about the past few years and how you've just taken over.
04:54I mean literally Nick and I were talking about, last year we had shouted you out in one of our Hollywood Life videos.
05:00Amazing.
05:01Because we were like these incredible up-and-coming artists and we were like Doja Cat, Kempecha.
05:05Yeah.
05:06Like I mean you are.
05:07Joja has been doing it for a while.
05:08Like I'm so like, it's so cool to see Joja Cat doing what she's doing too.
05:14So you have been on tour.
05:16You've been on the road.
05:18Have you continued songwriting while you have been out and about?
05:22I have.
05:23I've written a bunch of sentences and words that are completely just scattered over my notebook.
05:30Okay.
05:31I haven't really gotten into like melodies or anything.
05:34This last tour was like the most exhausting thing I've ever done in my life.
05:38Yeah.
05:39I was so happy over Christmas because I was just like constantly in a sweatsuit on a couch doing nothing.
05:45And I loved it.
05:47So it was like the most exhausting thing that I've done and because the show was really demanding.
05:52It had like six outfit changes.
05:54Oh my gosh.
05:55I was dancing really hard.
05:57Had like this turntable thing and a bunch of stairs and different sections of the stage.
06:03So it was like my first real show.
06:05So I felt like my whole focus was on just like, I'm doing this and I'm not going to get sick and I got to take care of my voice and I got to shut up when I'm off of the stage and not speak a single word until I'm back on stage.
06:17So it was a lot of that, but I'm so excited.
06:20Like I'm like bursting with ideas and what I want to do next.
06:23And I think I have a really strong vision of what I want to do next.
06:27And I know where I want to take it next.
06:29Okay.
06:30Yeah.
06:31Sure.
06:32Yeah.
06:33Well, it's a departure from clarity, which is a little weird because like my last thing that came out was turn off the light, but that kind of belongs to a record that came out the year before.
06:43So my last like project that I've written, like the latest was kind of clarity.
06:50Yeah.
06:51I'm just going to try and sound different from anything that I've done and go somewhere completely else.
06:58Yeah.
06:59I know.
07:00That's like saying nothing, but saying a lot.
07:01But at the same time, it's saying a lot for your fans.
07:03So you heard it first.
07:04It's going to be a little different.
07:05That's right.
07:06It'll be a little different.
07:08I love that.
07:11When it comes to your writing itself, is it things just in your life, being vulnerable, opening up about your feelings?
07:17Yeah.
07:18It's a lot of conversations with people in my life, with friends and like what my friends are going through, what, how my friends feel, how I feel.
07:27The stuff that happens in my life, the stuff that matters in my life, the things that I listen to.
07:33The cool thing is that kind of like everything goes into it.
07:36Like you can walk across the street and see something weird happen or going on.
07:42No, I like, you know, like the randomest things like inspire your songs and words are everywhere.
07:49And so I've always been really obsessed with rhyming things and finding different rhyme schemes.
07:55And that's like one of my like little things that I'm really into.
07:59And yeah, so like the littlest things, a movie, watching a movie can inspire it.
08:04Listening to a new artist can inspire it.
08:08And yeah, fashion, meeting people and real life.
08:13But my favorite things are just like really when I write about something that's very real to me and that's around me.
08:20And that someone in my life is going through, I'm going through.
08:23Cause then I'm just like, wow, that was, it's almost like a little diary.
08:27Like you listen back and you're like, whoa, that's the place that I was in.
08:30And like, yeah, I listened back to a couple of songs and I'm like, whoa, I've like grown so much.
08:33Like I don't even feel like that person anymore.
08:36It's amazing.
08:37It's cool.
08:38So you are about to embark on a tour in Europe.
08:42Yeah.
08:43And you're returning home to where you grew up.
08:46You're going to have a show in your hometown.
08:49Yeah.
08:50How excited are you for that?
08:51I'm so excited.
08:52Yeah.
08:53I haven't seen my family in a while.
08:54I'm just excited to, uh, yeah, be back and like play like a big solo show there.
08:59I mean, it's going to be insane.
09:01I wish I could be there.
09:02I'm sure.
09:03It's cool because like, I came here and like not to America, uh, like years ago when I was like 20 and like, I had never been here.
09:11I didn't know anybody.
09:12My family had never been.
09:13And so now I'm like coming back and it's cool that they like get to see like what I've been building.
09:18Absolutely.
09:19A lot of times like they don't really understand like what I'm doing and tell them about like the things that I'm doing.
