Dirk Steffens — The Seventh Step 1976 (Germany, Krautrock, Hard Rock)

Dirk Steffens is a German musician, sound engineer, and producer. Steffens studied guitar and piano at the Hamburg Conservatory. He also played in the band Beathovens from 1969 to 1971. In 1971, he formed his own band, Pennywonder, which also included Thomas Kuckuck, Jurgen Ehlert, and Enrico Lombardi. In July 1973, Dirk joined the band Birth Control, which he left due to family problems in January 1974. In the fall of 1975, Steffens began work on his first solo album, The Seventh Step, with the help of Scottish musician Ian Cussick (Lucifer's Friend) and Rolf Köhler (member of the band To Be). The album was completed and released in 1976 by Nova Records.


Steffens may be known to heavy metal fans as producer for bands like Accept or Helloween - but before that, he was active as member of Birth Control or in a short lived project with Ian Cussick. It is Cussick who provides lead vocals for this album as well apart from playing bass. Steffens wrote the songs and provides interesting enough guitars throughout (Frumpy guitarist Rainer Baumann appears on one track).

This was Steffens only solo effort and it is a pretty solid album. The production is excellent for a little known artist of the era - it was done by the artist himself and foreshadows his later career.Roxanne_NZ Mar 31 2022
