Despite his swift action on gun laws, the Prime Minister will have to confront some tough questions. ABC’s National Political lead David Speers reports.

00:00The Prime Minister is trying to deal with a nation reacting with a combination of shock,

00:07grief, soul searching and anger.

00:09This horrific shooting spree targeting Jewish Australians has raised difficult questions.

00:15How could this level of hatred and anti-Semitism in Australia come about?

00:19And are the tough gun laws the nation prides itself on tough enough?

00:24On gun laws, Anthony Albanese moved with urgency,

00:27intervening a national cabinet meeting where late today state, territory and federal leaders

00:31agreed to work on options including limiting the number of firearms an individual can hold

00:37and whether Australian citizenship should be a prerequisite for owning such a weapon.

00:42On anti-Semitism though, the Prime Minister was more defensive,

00:45listing the steps the government's already taken

00:48and announcing some further supports for the Jewish community.

00:51Not enough though to satisfy critics, including the opposition,

00:55which says Labor should have done more already.

00:58Even the government's own anti-Semitism envoy is frustrated at the pace of action.

01:03The Prime Minister hopes that national unity and harmony will emerge from this moment of darkness.
