00:00Suzuki 7th, Riccardo Patrese is 8th, Rubens Barracello 9th, and 10th, Derek Warwick.
00:07And there we see Gerhard Berger, and that's got a new engine in that Ferrari.
00:12It's also got a lot of understeer, I have to say, as you come, coming up through the Stabilo corner,
00:17you could see the front wheels not really doing what they should be doing.
00:21But Berger gave us a few moments of excitement in the pits, and running very wide over those curvings.
00:26When he came into the pits after a run, pulled the old Gerhard Berger completely missing the first part of the bus stop chicane.
00:34Presses on regardless.
00:36Now, will this time be allowed, or will there be a disallowed time?
00:40Whatever it is, 1 minute 52.813, currently puts them 8 quickest.
00:45But Berger came into the pits, switched the engine off, and suddenly the car, covered in flames,
00:51and he decides there's no way I'm going to make the apex, just cuts inside the curving,
00:56while Gerhard Berger still driving with an arm that is needing medical attention.
01:02And now, that engine, to me, looks like it's going to blow up,
01:05because there's a lot of vapour coming from the back of that car.
01:11And I think that's going to be more than just the dust he may have picked up in the undertray
01:15when he made that little adventure across the grass.
01:17Interesting, John, he's only 0.2 seconds slower than Alain Prost after that long straight.
01:26Both Ferraris this morning had the five-valve version of the V12 engine in place,
01:30and both cars now have got the revised and newer four-valve,
01:36which they hope is going to produce more power.
01:38Whether they will decide yet it's reliable enough to race,
01:42it's the Berger using literally every bit of the racetrack and the curving as well.
01:46And he's got Willie Dungal here from the Dungal Treatment Centre in Gars in Austria,
01:54looking after that wound.
01:56And it is still an open wound, in fact,
01:59and its dressings are being changed throughout the day
02:02to ensure that it heals correctly and properly.
02:06And Berger, like most drivers,
02:10when the adrenaline is flowing, is immune to any discomfort.
02:13But I'm sure it's not the most comfortable place to have an open wound.
02:19Gerhard coming up to the bus stop chicane again.
02:22This time he makes it through.
02:24And accelerating to start finish.
02:27His third flying lap.
02:29And the time will be 1.52.799.
02:35A small improvement for Gerhard Berger,
02:38who is still in eighth position.
02:43A little plunge down the hill.
02:45And again, you just can't say how steep that is.
02:47The compression you get in the bottom of Eau Rouge
02:50pushes you right down into the seat.
02:53At the same time, the chassis wants to gouge itself into the ground.
02:56But something flying off the back of that car,
02:59or is that just debris?
03:00In fact, I think there's also quite a lot of dust
03:02on that part of the circuit we see for the second lap in succession.
03:06And look, quicker than past.
03:08Oh, Berger, almost too much.
03:11As he came out of Lekoum,
03:12almost in a mirror of what we saw Katayama do a few moments earlier.
03:15And this is aggression, I must say.
03:19Berger fired up in a manner which will almost repeat
03:24of what we had in Hungary.
03:25But here, of course, much, much more spectacular.
03:29Now coming down to Pujo,
03:31this very fast double left-hand corner.
03:35Picking up speed, fifth gear,
03:36and then taking sixth on the exit.
03:38Around about 170 miles an hour at that point.
03:41Gerhard, who out-qualified team-mate Gianna Levy
03:45for the last two Grands Prix.
03:48And also finished that magnificent third place in Hungary.
03:54A very good race, aggressive, and, well,
03:57did you say downforce?
03:59It is downforce, but Berger has backed off,
04:01I would have said.
04:03It certainly looked like it as he came through Stabolo
04:05on the way back up the hill.
04:11And now up into the bus stop chicane.
04:15And I think Gerhard Berger is either
04:17deciding to come back into the pits.
04:20No, he's not.
04:20He's going to continue along.
04:21But he appeared to me
04:22three quarters away around the lap
04:25to back off.
04:26He has improved, in fact, marginally again.
04:28But something does happen that's very clear.
04:31And that is that there's not much speed from the Ferrari
04:34from the point where you leave the old circuit
04:37to the point where you rejoin the old circuit.
04:39Berger still in third position.
04:46And this is an in-cars shot of what happened
04:48on his first flying lap when he went straight on.
