It’s Love Your Pet Day, and that’s all the excuse we needed to talk to Shameless’ Emmy Rossum and Emmy Rossum’s dog Pepper.

00:04Emmy Rossum and Emmy Rossum's Pepper.

00:06I got Pepper, I adopted her a couple months ago through the Best Friends Animal Society.

00:12She did not look like this.

00:14She was shaved and matted and had been living on the street and with one hug and a little

00:18imagination I was able to imagine the great dog that she would become.

00:22So Emmy's a supporter of Best Friends Animal Society and No Kill LA.

00:26She stopped by our offices with several furry things currently up for adoption.

00:31And was there a moment that first inspired you to get involved?

00:34I had gone to visit the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah over my last hiatus

00:41from Shameless.

00:42Saw the sanctuary and was so inspired by the work that they were doing there.

00:45So I had agreed to host an adoption weekend for them with no intention of ending up with

00:51a dog myself.

00:52One of the helpers for the event had just handed me this straggly looking mutt and just

00:57be like, will you hold her for a second?

00:58I gotta help this other person who wants to adopt this bunny rabbit.

01:02And I held this dog who was named Sheila at the time and who is now Pepper.

01:07Have you inspired any of your Shameless cast to come along with you and adopt pets too?

01:13Yeah, in fact, Emma Kenny, who plays Debbie on the show, she does a lot of work with the

01:16Best Friends Society.

01:18She donates a lot of her time and I would say for anyone who wants to adopt a pet, if you

01:23can adopt and your apartment or your house will allow you to, that's amazing.

01:28Know it's a big commitment.

01:30And if you can't adopt because it's just a situation, you can donate your time.

01:34So whatever you do, just know that pets need your love, even if they don't love you back.

01:39Can I hold her?

01:40Yeah, sure.

01:41Okay.

01:42She's a little squatterly.

01:43She's very high energy.
