00:00Rhode Island residents and students gathered on Sunday to mourn victims of a shooting at Brown University that killed two students and wounded nine.
00:10The attack, one of nearly 400 mass shootings in the U.S. this year, prompted the university to cancel exams and classes for the rest of the year as the campus fell quiet under light snowfall.
00:22We have all experienced this, unfortunately, too often from afar.
00:30And even the Australian one would be more abstract, horrible but abstract.
00:37But boy, when it's here, it just makes it so real.
00:41It just, I think we've all, you know, been feeling, it literally hurts.

01:01Yeah, I mean, I think absolutely this is a huge wake-up call for everybody that, you know, has been affected and just everybody in the country in general.
01:13I mean, gun violence is a huge issue and this is, you know, truly so tragic that we're seeing these events happen over and over again.
01:19And so I think something definitely needs to be done.
01:22Police said a man in his 20s was detained in connection with the Brown University shooting, adding that no other suspects are being sought.
01:30The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Erickson, a former U.S. Army infantryman who served from 2021 to 2024.
01:40Officials said the gunman fled after opening fire in a classroom at Brown's Barris and Holly Building, where doors were unlocked during exams.
01:48Seven injured victims were in stable condition, with one listed as critical but stable and another discharged.
