00:00Red Connors and I were riding deep in the heart of the Maricopa district.
00:30From the Arizona Territory.
00:32In answer to a letter I had received from my old friend Nat Burnham, Indian agent in Phoenix.
00:37My thanks to you and Red for coming all the way from Mavar 20, Hoppy.
00:41It's all right, Nat. Whenever you send for us, we come a-running.
00:43Sit down, Hoppy.
00:44Thanks.
00:46Now, what's going on here?
00:48I've got a problem on my hands.
00:50Yeah?
00:52Do you remember the land deal the department arranged for the retired Army Indian scout seven years ago?
00:57Well, you ought to, Hoppy. You upset it up.
00:59Ah, just a minute, Red. Let's see what Nat has to say.
01:02Since that time, the two tribes have lived together peacefully, side by side, on their small forms until a month ago.
01:08Now it looks like they've bent on killing each other off.
01:11Well, Nat, knowing what I'd do about those two tribes, that doesn't seem possible.
01:15Let me tell you what happened.
01:16I had been friends with the chiefs of most of the members of the Maricopa and Apache tribes who had served with the scouts, and it wasn't a pleasant story to listen to.
01:25Four weeks ago, Chief Red Air of the Maricopa had been found on the outskirts of his ranch, shot to death.
01:33Several days later, Warnit, son of the Apache chief, had been found in the street in the nearby town of Mezcal, an Indian knife on his back.
01:43Hey, Tex, bring your rig up here.
01:45All of this had been followed by the burning of the houses and barns of both sides.
01:57Cattle had been driven into the quicksands and left to die.
02:00Up to now, there have been three men of each tribe killed.
02:05Once the Indians start trying to get even, they won't stop and there's not a man left.
02:08Oh, there's more than that than meets the eye, Red.
02:11I was with those two tribes when they took the oath of blood brotherhood.
02:15They wouldn't break that oath for anything.
02:17And what's your opinion, Hoppy?
02:19Well, I'm of the opinion that somebody's trying to run them off their land.
02:22Why would anybody do that?
02:24It's the poorest land in the district.
02:26They make a living only by the hardest work.
02:27You know, mineral, oil, I don't know.
02:30There's never been a trace of either in the whole district.
02:33No, Hoppy, I think it's a feud.
02:36Now, I hate to be stubborn, but I'm going to stick to my own opinion.
02:40But you will go down there and see what you can do about it.
02:42Oh, sure.
02:44Just draw up my credentials and Red and I will be on our way.
02:48We were within a mile of Chief Red Arrow's ranch house when suddenly ahead of us...
02:57and we're going to have to find a home.
02:58Let's go.
03:03Let me know.
03:04Let me know.
03:04I'll have to know.
03:05Oh, it's only a skull crease.
03:27We'll get him home and take care of him.
03:29Where do you live, son?
03:31Oh, about a mile up the road, Mr. Cassidy.
03:33Well, he knows you, Hoppy.
03:36I should.
03:37He's the best friend my father ever had.
03:39Well, you must be Tommy Red Arrow.
03:41That's right.
03:42Come on, give me a hand, Red.
03:44We'll get him home.
03:47That sting a little?
03:48Yeah.
03:51Ah, there we are.
03:52Now you'll be as good as new.
03:54Thanks, Hoppy.
03:56It's foolish of me to ride into town alone.
03:58I might have known I would be next.
04:00You know, I can't get over it, Hoppy.
04:02Tommy talks even better English than me.
04:05Well, he should.
04:06He was an honor graduate from one of the finest Indian schools in America.
04:10There have never been any witnesses before.
04:13Did you get a good look at whoever it was who ambushed me?
04:16All we know is there was a couple of Indians.
04:18Is that true?
04:19Yeah, I'm afraid so, Tommy.
04:22I've been learning the ways of the civilized white man, and I like them.
04:25But if the Apaches have broken the oath of blood brotherhood, I'll...
04:29Now, wait a minute, Tommy.
04:30Don't do anything in a hurry.
04:32I know Chief Whitecloud, too.
04:34I'm going over to have a talk with him.
04:36All right.
04:37I'll wait until I hear from you.
04:38Good.
04:39Red, you better stay here with him in case they try to finish off what they started.
04:42Oh, that won't be necessary, Hoppy.
04:44Now that I know I'm marked, I shall be on the alert.
04:47All right.
04:47Suit yourself.
04:48And that thing is not sticking very good.
04:51There you are.
04:51There you go.
04:52Okay.
04:52Come on, Red.
04:53Keep your eyes open, Tommy.
04:56I had a long talk with the Chief, and he gave me his sacred word that neither he nor any
05:01of his tribe had anything to do with the trouble in any way.
05:04And knowing him, I believed him.
05:06I was sure now that outsiders were back of the whole thing.
05:09And the best place to begin my investigation was at the scene of the ambush.
05:14Here I found what I felt was definite evidence that white men had been involved in the ambushing
05:25of Tommy.
05:26The Apaches in this district all wore moccasins, and there were fresh prints of high-heeled western
05:31boots in the sand.
05:33And I was sure the Apaches didn't smoke Turkish cigarettes.
05:37Back at Tommy's house, I had told him of my findings, and then I started asking questions.
05:49Has anyone been trying to buy up the Indians' land?
05:52Hoppy, have you forgotten?
05:54The grant of lands to us carried a clause that we could never sell them.
05:57Yeah, I know.
05:58That clause was put in so the Indians couldn't be cheated out of their land.
06:01There's another clause that ties our hands so far as this present trouble is concerned.
06:05Yeah?
06:06If we leave the land, we'll be sent back to the reservations and our ranches will be sold
06:10to the highest bidders.
06:12Oh, I see.
06:14And I still insist you're being driven off the land.
06:17But why?
06:18Our places are none too prosperous.
06:20Maybe not as farms, Tommy.
06:23But there has to be some reason why they want this land.
06:26Were there any white men seen around here about the time the trouble started?
06:32No.
06:33What little business we transact is done in town.
06:36I see.
06:37There has to be somebody, I guess.
06:39Oh, yes.
06:40There was a photographer who went around town taking pictures of the Indians to put on souvenir
06:44postcards.
06:45Harmless old man, half drunk most of the time.
06:48Calls himself Picture Pete.
06:50When was the last time you saw him?
06:52Today, in town.
06:53Well, we'd better ride into town and have a talk with Picture Pete, huh?
06:58Yeah, maybe I can have my picture taken.
07:01And what are you going to do with that?
07:03Well, I'd give it to you to keep.
07:08They'll never get that on paper.
07:10Come on.
07:11The little town of Mezcal was just a few miles from the Indian land.
07:15All right.
07:30That's fine now.
07:31That's fine.
07:32I just have to move.
07:33Don't keep moving around.
07:35That's not my bit for me.
07:37All right.
07:38There we go.
07:38Hold it.
07:40There you are.
07:41That'll be 25 cents.
07:43I'll have the pictures for you on Saturday.
07:46Thank you, my friend.
07:48Well, say, you look like the very spirit of the West.
08:06Would you mind posting for a photograph for me?
08:09Uh, maybe later.
08:10Right now, I'd like to have a little talk with you.
08:12Hey, Hoppy, these darn good pictures of Indians, you should see the pictures of the country.
08:16It looks just as natural.
08:18A very discriminating man, your friend.
08:20Yeah.
08:21I pride myself on my ability with a camera.
08:25Don't be frightened.
08:27That's not a snake, just a hair.
08:29I pride myself on my ability with a camera when I can stay away from this, uh, this boy.
08:38Nester, you know something?
08:39Use me as an example, my friend.
08:42You don't have to worry about me.
08:43I never touch this stuff.
08:45You know, your advice about keeping away from that stuff is pretty sound.
08:49Why don't you try using it yourself?
08:51No, I've tried everything.
08:54Excuse me, will you please?
08:55I've got to finish talking to your friend over here.
08:59You know, you're wise in avoiding this stuff, my friend.
09:03Nester, look what it's done to me.
09:06At one time, I was recognized as one of the finest mineralogists in the whole country.
09:12Now, reduce the selling picture postcards for a living.
09:17But it isn't always going to be like that.
09:20No, sir.
09:21One of these days, and real soon, my ship is coming in.
09:26Coming in over those hills, young man.
09:29One of these days, I'll be one of the wealthiest men.
09:32Tee!
09:36That's my master's voice.
09:38What do you want, Constable Martin?
09:44Told you to stay off the street and in your room when you're drinking.
09:47Don't pay any attention to anything the drunken old fool says.
09:50You know, I resent that attitude, Constable.
09:54I was just simply explaining to these gentlemen here...
09:56Get him out of here.
09:58Come on.
09:58All right.
10:05Hey, now, listen.
10:06All I was trying to do was...
10:08Hold on.
10:10Please, Hoppy, let me take care of that no good.
10:12All right.
10:13Go right ahead.
10:15Come on, get up.
10:16You big bully, why don't you pick on somebody your size?
10:22Your friend's asking for it.
10:25You think so?
10:26You look about my size, big mouth.
10:39Hey, you can't do that.
10:40Wait a minute.
10:42Let him alone.
10:43Your man started it.
10:44Now you're asking for it.
10:50How you doing, Red?
10:51Oh, fine.
10:52Somebody never learned this sidewinder not to lead with his right.
10:57This one leads with his chin.
11:08I'm going to run you two clear into the next county.
11:11I'm afraid that'll be a little difficult.
11:14According to this.
11:17Take a look at it.
11:19Acting U.S. Marshal.
11:21Working for the Indian agency.
11:22That's right.
11:23And Red Connors is my deputy.
11:26Cassidy, huh?
11:28No wonder you're so handy with your fists.
11:31Sorry to cause you this trouble.
11:33Ah, forget it.
11:34I think I'm going to have enough trouble keeping the Indians from killing each other off.
11:37Well, I'm glad somebody's here to look into things.
11:39But we're expecting them to turn on the whites any day now.
11:42I think they should be moved somewhere else.
11:45You really think so, huh?
11:46Yep.
11:48And if I can be of any help, you let me know.
11:50Yeah, I'll do that.
11:51Come on, leads.
11:53I got some business in the office.
11:58Hey, Hoppy.
11:59I just got old Pete headed back for his room to sleeve it off.
12:02Ah, that's good, Red.
12:03You know, I feel kind of sorry for a guy like that.
12:06Yeah.
12:06We're going to stick around here until he sobers up.
12:09Then I'm going to have a little talk with him about mineralogy.
12:11Yeah, sure.
12:12That's...
12:13Hey, Hoppy, there's a restaurant.
12:16You're not hungry again.
12:17Yeah, it always makes me hungry to fight.
12:20Did you call that a fight?
12:21Well, sure.
12:24Then all you need is a cup of coffee.
12:26Come on, I can use one, too.
12:27Oh, Hoppy.
12:31Well, I guess that ought to hold me until supper time.
12:33Well, it should after that second steak you had for dessert.
12:40It was the hotel clerk, and he was telling his listeners
12:43that he had just found picture Pete dead in his room.
12:52My credentials got me the number of Pete's room.
12:57Liquor would never be a problem to Pete again.
13:00The Indian knife in his back had done its work.
13:03Someone must have had a mighty good reason
13:06for wanting to silence Pete.
13:07I went through his belongings,
13:09hoping to find something that would tie him in
13:11with the Indian trouble.
13:22In his battered suitcase, I found samples of ore
13:25and a picture he had taken showing a range of hills.
13:27But what interested me most were the lines
13:31that had been drawn in the picture,
13:32making it a map of sorts.
13:34Now I was getting somewhere.
13:37The hotel hallway led to a back door
13:40that opened on an alley.
13:41Again, an expensive cigarette, freshly ground out.
13:58Well, he was killed with an Indian's knife.
14:01I knew it wouldn't be long before the Indians
14:02start killing the whites.
14:04You're getting a little ahead of yourself, aren't you, mister?
14:07I said he was killed with an Indian's knife.
14:10Marshal Cassidy, this is Mr. Rush,
14:12Mezcal's leading businessman.
14:14How do you do?
14:15Marshal, something must be done about this whole business,
14:17or I shall demand that the government in Washington step in.
14:21Mr. Rush, in this particular case,
14:22I happen to represent the government.
14:25I'll decide what's to be done around here.
14:27Come on, Red, we're going out and see Tommy Red Arrow.
14:29Tommy, do you recognize that cliff
14:35where these lands converse you?
14:37Yes, Hoppy, that's what we call Lone Eagle Hill.
14:40Where is it?
14:41Well, here, take a look.
14:44It's the dividing line between our lands
14:46and the lands of the Apache neighbors.
14:49Let's ride up there and have a look.
14:51Sure.
14:51Sure.
14:59Well, Tommy, there's the reason somebody
15:10wanted you off of this land.
15:12What do you mean, Hoppy?
15:14That is the biggest outcropping of copper ore I've ever seen.
15:17Probably worth a fortune.
15:19I've never seen this before.
15:22Last winter's rains must have washed away the surface dirt,
15:24exposing the veins.
15:26Yeah, it might have.
15:27Well, it's pretty easy to figure out now.
15:28Well, it ain't for me.
15:31Red, picture Pete said he was a mineralogist, didn't he?
15:34He was probably up in here looking for scenery to photograph
15:36and ran into this rich vein,
15:38realized the value of it.
15:40Now I get it.
15:41You go to town and get drunk and blabbermouthed to somebody.
15:43That's exactly right.
15:46And I'll bet that somebody is a man
15:47that smokes Turkish cigarettes.
15:49Let's get back to town.
15:51Come on.
15:52Back in town, my first move was to try to find out
16:00who around here smoked that brand of cigarettes.
16:02But the grocer was of no help.
16:04He didn't carry them.
16:13In the saloon, I had met with success.
16:15The bartender had told me that the only man in town
16:22who smoked the brand I had asked for
16:24was Judson Rush.
16:27Well, you can relax now, Mr. Rush.
16:38I've talked to both Tommy Red Arrow and Chief Whitecloud.
16:41They promised there'll be no more Indian trouble.
16:43Oh, cigarette, Marshal?
16:45No, thanks.
16:47How, uh...
16:48How well do you know the Indians around here, Marshal?
16:50Not too well.
16:51I thought not.
16:53If you did, you wouldn't trust them
16:54as far as you could throw a bull by the tail.
16:56Well, that may be true.
16:57But if they start any more trouble,
16:59I'll run them right off the land.
17:00See you later.
17:01Come on, Red.
17:06I had planted an idea in Rush's mind.
17:09My next move was to wait and see how he acted on it.
17:15From now on, I intended to watch every move Rush made.
17:18I had a hunch that sooner or later
17:20he would prove himself guilty.
17:26A logical trio.
17:52A money-hungry man,
17:55a crooked constable,
17:56and a cold-blooded killer.
17:58A peanut-hungry man,
18:00a motorist,
18:01a difficulty going further...
18:03A number of drums in publicration
18:04would prove himself lacking.
18:05A mund actionable,
18:06an español m ηmedicine,
18:06a minute-a-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
18:15It's Driver.
18:15Akol화 hat-a-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la.
18:17THE END
18:47Just a short distance from Tommy's ranch.
19:08Red, I don't know what's going to happen here.
19:10You better get back to Tommy Red Arrows and tell him to get some of his friends together and be ready for anything.
19:14I'm going down close to that house, see what I can find out.
19:18You know, watch yourself, Bobby.
19:20I will. You go ahead.
19:21The costumes cleared the Indians.
19:43It wouldn't be long now before the move would come that would prove all three of them guilty.
19:54Get your hands up, Marshal.
20:00All right, inside.
20:01Look who I found sneaking around outside.
20:13And what did you see, Cassidy?
20:16Enough to prove that the Indians have been framed.
20:18And by three of the lowest white men I've ever seen in my life.
20:22That's too bad.
20:26For you.
20:27I'll finish him off and then go after that big-mouthed partner of his.
20:30Now, don't be in such a hurry, Leeds.
20:33You know, this situation was made to order.
20:36Martin here will find Cassidy with a knife in his heart.
20:39And the Indians will be chased back to the reservation so fast their feet will smoke.
20:44Perfect plan, isn't it, Cassidy?
20:46All but the last part.
20:47It won't work.
20:48Why not?
20:50You don't think I'm stupid enough to walk into a spot like this without an ace in the hole, do you?
20:55He's bluffing, Rush.
20:56Let me be the judge of that.
20:58What is this ace in the hole?
21:00Probably the same thing you'd have done if you were in my spot.
21:04Well, come on. Let's have it.
21:05My deputy knows everything about you three that I do.
21:08He's a Tommy of Red Ayers right now.
21:10If I'm not there in 15 minutes, he'll go into town, tell the whole story, and organize a posse.
21:14I still think he's bluffing.
21:16You want to call my hand?
21:18Not unless I hold the stakes.
21:20We'll get rid of the Indian and the deputy first.
21:23And then, uh, we'll take care of the marshal.
21:26Ah, that's a brilliant decision.
21:29Let's go.
21:44The first part of my plan had worked.
21:56Now I've read and Tommy had carried out my instructions.
22:02Start walking.
22:03Just ahead was Tommy's ranch house.
22:13Hold it, Cassidy.
22:18Red's horse was tied at the hitch rack, so I knew he was somewhere around.
22:23Cassidy, just to make sure you don't try to yell any warnings, we'll stay here.
22:26I wouldn't think of trying to upset your plan.
22:30Martin, you lead someone out of the house and get it over with.
22:32It'll be a pleasure.
22:33I'll be right back.
23:03All right, get your hands up.
23:28All right, on your feet.
23:29Now you can start walking.
23:49Everything all right, Hoppy?
23:50Yeah.
23:51Here's your hardware.
23:52I just brought you another customer.
23:56You might as well get out of that habit.
23:57Where you're going, there won't be any turkey cigarettes.
24:00Well, Tommy, you can help us get our prisoners to the federal jail,
24:03and we'll go tell our story to the Indian agent.
24:06All right, come on.
24:08Come on!
24:11After delivering the prisoners, we went to see Chief Whitecloud.
24:14Now that the Indians had been cleared,
24:16peace was restored between the Maricopas and the Apaches.
24:20And the commissioner had promised Tommy he'd help get a government loan
24:23to finance work on their copper mine.
24:25Hi there, my little friends.
24:45If you were playing baseball and the baseball was knocked across a railroad track,
24:51I'm pretty sure when you got to that railroad track,
24:55you'd stop, look, and listen, wouldn't you?
24:59Now please remember that any street in America
25:02is just as dangerous as that railroad.
25:05So when you get to the curbstone,
25:08stop, look, and listen.
25:13Will you do that for me?
25:15Now so long until next week,
25:18and in the meantime,
25:20don't forget to go to Sunday school.
25:22There he goes on his way
25:28Down the moonly trail to where Cowboy's Reign
25:32Hop along, Cassidy
25:35Hop along, Cassidy
25:39He'll return soon again
25:43There's no use to say goodbye until then
25:47Hop along, Cassidy
25:51So long, hop along
25:53Hop along
25:54Hop along, Cassidy
