Paul Wesley Talks Shadowhunters
Transcript
00:00You still don't understand, do you?
00:03When I read a script the first time,
00:05I have a pretty clear vision of the thematics and the story.
00:10That's awesome. I really like the way that's flowing.
00:12I've known Paul for four years,
00:14and Paul has directed five episodes of The Vampire Diaries beautifully.
00:18And I had the pleasure of directing him in an Originals crossover episode,
00:21and we were talking about directing.
00:23I talked to a bunch of people who had worked with him,
00:25and they were all highly complimentary of him.
00:28Can we do, like, a market? Can we do a market?
00:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:31Paul knows this mythology because of, obviously, The Vampire Diaries.
00:33He's been through this kind of stuff before,
00:35and he understands that the vampires have certain powers
00:37and the shadow hunters have certain abilities,
00:39that there are rules in place within this world that you have to follow.
00:42It worked!
00:43Having someone like him who's been an actor
00:47in this kind of a genre for so many years is extremely beneficial.
00:51He has this kind of insight and this instinct as to what works and what doesn't,
00:55and what could be interesting, and how to change things up a little bit
00:59and get us out of our regular rhythm.
01:01As an actor, whenever I am directing, it's funny.
01:05I do the opposite of what people would think I would do,
01:07which is get cerebral or analytical.
01:10I understand that acting is a very personal experience,
01:14and I think that it's important for actors to bring their own intuitive
01:19and instinctive drive to a character.
01:22He gave us a little bit of freedom to interact as we know each other.
01:27Trust me, I know the damaged secrets can cause more than anyone.
01:30And was able to spot things that maybe weren't going well,
01:33and he spoke very clearly with us and gave very clear direction.
01:36I do like your idea of like, oh, dad, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
01:40It's important to trust actors, and I think,
01:42I appreciate it when directors trust me,
01:45so I always try to trust actors.
01:47You always cared more about the mortal instruments than you did your own son.
01:51That's not true.
01:53I got to do some really interesting character work
01:56with Valentine and Sebastian,
01:59which is this really interesting father-son dynamic.
02:01I wanted you to be proud of me.
02:03Oh, I was so proud.
02:08I get to be inventive visually
02:10and create a world that is a big, iconic world in the book series.
02:14Welcome to Idris.
02:15I think it's going to be a really great episode.
02:18It's cinematic in my opinion,
02:20and I'm excited for fans to see what we've created.
