01:03Let's get the boardwalk out.
01:04It's like we're at the beach.
01:05Everything in our display is beach themed.
01:08Our driveway is covered in the ocean and the beach.
01:11So far I've got all the individual lines modeled.
01:14We've got fireworks for 4th of July.
01:17The official Christmas beach patrol.
01:19We have polar bear lifeguards.
01:21Let's hope nobody needs to be rescued.

01:24Well, we're in.
01:25The five foot beach balls on the top of our roof.
01:27They engineered a motor and a pulley system to turn the balls.
01:32And five water cannons that will fire off.
01:34Just fill them up with water.
01:36And then there's an air tank.
01:37Go big or go home is definitely our motto.
01:40Oh, you got that.
01:41We're going to use this ring roller to bend up some metal.
01:44Part of the fun for me is building the props.
01:46I like the challenge.
01:47I like coming up with different ways of doing it.
01:50Now we've got a perfect ring so we can make the balls for the trees.
01:53I've always been particular about how many lights are actually on the house.
01:59So I make spreadsheets to keep track so that I know the exact number.
02:03One of the reasons I do want to win is in my eighth grade yearbook.
02:07I wrote that my future goal was to win the great Christmas light fight.
02:11So getting to be on the show and meeting Tanya is a dream come true.

05:17Is this something you purchased or did you make this?
05:19No, I built this.
05:20You built it?
05:21Yes.
05:22I took plywood, made some circles, bought some aluminum bar.
05:25I used a little machine to give it a curve.
05:27Supported it all with PVC in the middle and stacked it up.
05:31You know, he's a bit tropical.
05:32We gave him some sunglasses and some flowers for buttons.
05:35And I love the way you have that backdrop because the snow, the way it's dangling like that,
05:39really gives the effect of falling snow.
05:41Those are strings of pixels.
05:42Instead of being pushed into like a shape, we just decided to hang them from the trees up there
05:47and program it to have like a falling snow effect.
05:50I feel like I'm playing in the snow over here.
05:52It's really great.
05:55I love a mega tree in rainbow color lights.
05:58How tall is this?
05:59It's about 15 feet tall.
06:00I have a 16 foot stepladder.
06:02So I go up and down 32 times to put each string of light on the top.
06:07And then we tie wrap them to the bottom.
06:09You could start a new workout.
06:10You get a Christmas workout.
06:12It's like that, yeah.
06:13So how many lights are on this?
06:15There's 3,200 lights on here.
06:17I actually keep a spreadsheet.
06:18We have each item and how many lights are on each thing.
06:22Wow, that is so amazing.
06:25Is it weird that I am just as impressed with this spreadsheet as I am with this tree, okay?

07:08We have a little bit of an ocean.

07:13It does give that ripple effect.
07:15It feels so subtle, but it really makes a cool impact.
07:20I love the shark and the fish.

07:22And then, of course, it transitions into sand and a lifeguard.
07:24A cute little polar bear to save my life while I'm getting eaten by a shark.
07:29Can we talk about Santa surfing up there with the waves?
07:33Yes.
07:34And I love how you did those mini pixel sticks to create big ocean waves for Santa.
07:38Surfing the waves on the ocean and we got a lot of movement out of the pixel sticks to
07:42make it look a little more authentic.
07:44I usually see these pixel sticks on the ground and a lot of times it's lights on the roof.
07:49But you kind of did the reverse here.
07:50You put lights on the ground and pixel sticks on the roof.
07:53I'm actually curious how you got them to stay up there.
07:56I built little pieces of 2x4 and attached the pixel sticks to the side of the 2x4s.
08:00I gave the 2x4 a little feet so they don't go anywhere.
08:03Yeah.
08:04And I tied them up to the house at the top so they don't slide down.
08:06How many pixel sticks?
08:07There's so many of them up there.

08:29they actually look like balloons rising up into the air.
08:31I actually use a potato gun to shoot a string up and over a branch.

08:36Tie the string onto the ball and I hoist it up over the branch and tie it off at the bottom.
08:40It's fun.

08:43Tell me a little bit about the beach balls.
08:45They're spinning.
08:46I built a motor system to make them spin.
08:49It's like a Lazy Susan underneath that attaches to the ball.
08:52It looks effortless the way they're moving.
08:54The fact that you came up with this whole machine system with the Lazy Susan.
08:58There ain't nothing lazy about Susan on this one.

09:34Well, palm trees have curves, so you can't just, you know, have a straight palm tree.

09:42There's some metal frames that I bent into shape and, uh...

12:02the beach that's so great i'm getting the whole concept of a boardwalk absolutely that's part of
12:09our vacation every year is going on the boardwalk going to the beach so we have it all here and
12:14what's a boardwalk without fireworks they're different every time just like actual fireworks
12:22a bar in a christmas display is definitely a first
12:26you guys continue to bring the fun cheers to the hack family and a summer in december
12:35merry christmas this may not be your traditional holiday display oh that's good but it has holiday
12:45spirit written all over it the hacks go on a family vacation every year building memories and brian has
12:52incorporated everything in their fun beachy vibe here i'm having a blast i don't want this to end
12:58i mean even santa has to take a vacation sometime i feel like i've been riding the christmas wave out

14:00hi i'm barbara and i'm dean and we're the paul family hey dean why'd the chicken wire cross the road
14:06i don't know to make a christmas masterpiece yay merry christmas we need the rope lights
14:15and the green lights you got it uh-huh
14:20had it that didn't sound like you guys we've been decorating our house for christmas for 20 years
14:26in our secret chicken wire ready for this honey that's the sound of christmas
14:34our entire house is covered in chicken wire we're talking 1100 square feet of chicken wire this chicken
14:42wire being an inch around allows us to make any shape any size of any item the chicken wire allowed
14:52us to do something very extreme against the side of the house right there yeah that's good okay got our
14:59shape we need crazy shapes let's coat the house in chicken wire goes to right there once we realized
15:06that barbara started coming up with all these great ideas for the future designs and future themes and we
15:13can just wrap it around chicken wire is a really hard material to work with it's metal you have to cut
15:19it with special cutters ouch another band-aid and you're gonna get cut ow ow ow it's like an angry cat caught
15:28in the corner yes you're gonna get scratched my poor hands so for any like christmas project we have
15:34to go out and purchase chicken wire zip ties lights and hydrogen peroxide and that is the way to get
15:42through christmas
15:51and you are hi dean and barbara so what's going on here with these outfits well this whole thing with
16:14the chicken it's not really about chickens you are throwing me for a loop what is happening it is
16:24about chicken wire i think what you're telling me is there's a lot of diy happening here today yes there
16:33is so not only do we use chicken wire this year our theme is ornaments okay we have made a ornament
16:40out of chicken wire that is going to be placed upon the tree okay and that will turn it all on well
16:46i was just gonna say since since you guys are the pillar of fashion right here i thought for sure
16:52this is my new handbag yes yes very chic we will do this as an ornament let's do it all right guys let's get excited

18:39this is so pretty this is the big wow the jingle bells as you can see here's our chicken wire yeah that we
18:47have lined our entire houses but it is also our canvas i love the way you say canvas it does feel a
18:54lot like a lot like a tapestry yes with that said we'd like to take our chickens off and put our hats on to show

19:12but it's because we want to show you how uh how archie's do it oh yeah i okay i'm digging this yes and now the outfits
19:20are complete the outfits are now complete tell me everything i want to know how you came up with this
19:25theme do you do the same thing every year we do not we change our theme on our house every single year
19:31every year so what you see this year will not be what you see next year what made you come up with ornaments and jingle bells
19:37ornaments just seem to really natural
19:39the bells themselves are easy because we use old school projector put the shape on it project the
19:47shape up here and then we just outline the shape you know i've done a lot of murals that way and i've
19:52never thought to actually project up on to chicken wire and attach lights to it so that's very cool we have
20:00about 1100 feet of chicken wire and about 5000 zip ties and twist ties are you telling me that the entire
20:09house is fully wrapped in chicken wire it is is it in a massive roll no we buy out the stores
20:17yeah the locals can't be building chicken coops around here because there's no more chicken wire to
20:22be had yeah a lot of chicken wire now that i've seen this i can't wait to see how else you've used it
20:27we use chicken wire all throughout the display so we'd love to take you around the yard i'd say let's
20:33clock over there but you got rid of the hats and now i can't clock anymore let's go
20:40there's so many lights dude i swear i love this big mama jama right from the get-go this is our big
20:47ornament centerpiece that looks like it was a real project to try to put together trying to get the
20:52shape was really the tough part right trying to get chicken wire to be round and sturdy enough to hold all
20:58the lights so we took a bunch of stakes pounded the stakes into the ground to get the anchor in the
21:04bottom and then we took 10-foot pvc pipes and connect them in the middle this was a big one but the little
21:09ones like the ones behind you getting a circle was challenging we used wire and the pvc pipe to make
21:16kind of a shape love that we have a third way to make a round ornament this is three child-sized hula
21:23hoops covered in a trash bag wrapped in chicken wire the chicken wire that we use is also recycled
21:30so last year this could have been a candy cane so this year yeah i'm molding remolding we save the
21:36chicken wire from year to year and it becomes something different the next year love it tanya we got
21:41more so let's go to the porch here i like the candy canes this is also a recycle upcycle the candy
21:48cane itself the styrofoam is our old hot tub cover instead of throwing it out into the environment
21:54we turned it into a candy cane and it's wrapped in saran wrap i like the saran wrap touch because
21:59it actually gives a little sheen makes it a little shiny and it weatherproofs it it looks perfect
22:04up close i can see so much chicken wire how is it attached to the house we put a bunch of nails at
22:11the top okay and then if you look down there's a bunch of nails at the bottom on the board and you
22:16stretch it so it's nice and taut because it has some give to it so right so if you're willing to
22:21damage your house you can do a lot right that's your that's your psa announcement right absolutely
22:29well it's great every year's really tanya one of our favorite things of this whole design
22:36is right over here i'd love to show you let's go well welcome to the lights of christmas past
22:43i did not expect to see this that is so cool by christmas past you mean these are things that
22:50you've done in your displays previously all of our chicken wire themes that we have had in the past
22:56amazing on the slideshow we actually have a picture of every single year everything from the gingerbread
23:04band theme to the candy cane theme to a mosaic theme to a snowman theme to the fireplace theme including
23:13the smokestack well this is amazing but tanya we got one more thing to show you yes so just follow me

25:12we're the riera family and we're going for the crown with our castle display reign supreme
25:18these are the ones we're going to attach a pole to and they're going to go up on top of the castle
25:24this is the original sketch i did back about four years ago how's that look i want to do something
25:31unique that i get some elevation and kind of cover the garage so i started sketching this up and that's
25:36where it all kind of started and it just built from there this is me being the smithsonian someday
25:41i think my favorite part of the display would be the castle towers don't get too dumb there is so
25:52many items in our display that are hand cut homemade the fireplace is just coming along there's nothing
26:00out there like it so i need you to put that tree right there one of my favorite parts is the time i
26:07spend with my grandsons where we put trees down you put them in triangles that's a trick i learned
26:12from landscape architects there's things that i want to teach them things i've learned put it on top
26:17just like that so the bonding experience is really priceless for me are you done with the lights
26:25i need you to climb up that tree and fix that light bulb no i think our display is the best because
26:31it contains a little bit of everything catch the snowman who's gonna fall oh you don't see any other
26:37displays like ours anywhere

27:13hey there hi well bill tell me a little bit about your display and why you do it every year
27:19well you know i started you know when the kids were little i enjoy building things and what we're
27:23going to see today is results of all my engineering and construction background
27:27with a big castle and some other surprises throughout the display you know when you say
27:32the words engineering and construction you're setting the bar really high for yourself bill you know
27:38what i mean i love it well i am really excited i can't wait to see this i have a castle we built
27:44as a model of course you did and that's how we turn on you want to turn on the lights let's go let's go
27:52whoa bill i can't believe you made this if your display is anywhere near as good as this model we're
28:01in for a treat oh absolutely yes well what you're going to do is you're going to place the staff in the
28:06the middle and it's going to turn everything off well i'm ready to see this you guys

28:33look at this mega tree is that a river i love it i see reindeer sparkling lights in the trees

28:49come on in guys oh yes what color is your favorite uh the color mine too how many reindeer do you see
29:06tell me about all of this i come from an engineering family so i want to hear all the nerdy little
29:12details sure well this is santa's castle the castle is so cool i want to do something different yes
29:18something creative something people haven't seen before right what is the fortress part made out of
29:23quarter inch plywood we actually cut all of that out and then painted it with an exterior latex paint
29:29but it looks textured looks real yeah it's four sheeting it has those little variations in the
29:34front that gives it a look of concrete i like the balance i like the symmetry very very pretty and
29:40very well done who knew that santa lives in a castle yeah i didn't know that all right tanya and
29:49i want you to come over here to our reindeer stables that's where santa keeps all of his reindeer so
29:54we wanted to create another exhibit different than the other areas start putting in some animatronics
29:59that's great you really feel like you're transported you have this ability to create a real theatrical
30:06setting the kids really love this area i love this area well on prancer let's go
30:21the arches i noticed immediately and i think they're really fun we use this corrugated plastic
30:27you can actually buy individual pieces and we kind of made them into an arch and then we spent a couple
30:31of days going through and actually had to insert every pixel in here so you diy'd that i see how
30:37you've attached them with some zip ties put it together how do you get it to stand upright because
30:42i don't see anything holding it up where we support these is we put rebar into the ground and then
30:48we measure that so that as soon as it hits the ground it clips in here so they're not too wobbly
30:52hey i like that i love a display that's just as neat and clean on the back side as it is on the front
30:58side and you've done a wonderful job of that they look so good wait tanya okay this is kind of our
31:08winter wonderland again here's that corrugated cardboard right exactly and it's so simple it's
31:15very simple and inexpensive and you put on some of the lights put some stakes behind it yeah so it
31:20creates kind of a dimension and anybody can do that at home i love love the way you layered everything
31:26it looks so beautiful thank you okay tanya you ready for something special more special than what
31:33i've already seen yes there's more i have something very special to show you i'd love to see it
31:40is this a front facade because i actually thought it was your front door no it's actually our garage
31:44but hey look at that wow look at this can i go in yeah oh my gosh this is cool

32:19it's a special area for us because we have older antique animatronics that reflected over the years that
32:26merry christmas sign is over 40 years old wow handed down from my grandparents and over on this side
32:32are just various collectibles we've had over the years we like to create a nice area and display those
32:37items that we've saved you know over the years and actually that sign's about 40 years old all these
32:42very special things here that you've collected over the years i can see why they're protected inside yeah
32:49and tell me about all the family photos well this area here is very special to us um
33:00these are the people that make my life so special and you know we celebrated christmas every year but
33:05in 2003 we lost our son joey two weeks before christmas oh my gosh and christmas was dark that year
33:12christmas was a difficult time for us and one night we're actually watching the show and the kids say why
33:18don't you put up christmas lights anymore then i thought you know what i'm going to do it and
33:23i'm going to dedicate it to joey which really gave me the motivation it kept my mind off of things
33:28during christmas so that's why i do that because during christmas you know it brought back some bad
33:32memories um so i thought the more lights i put up the more his light and spirit would shine and that's
33:38what really kept me going but but now we celebrate christmas we have christmas we celebrate his life
33:45we celebrate our family how far we've come um create a tradition for our grandchildren
33:52and that's why we share that with our friends family and our community
34:04but in some way he's still here with us of course he is so when you see what's here
34:09that's my motivation that's why i try to put so much into it it's lights but but it's meant to be
34:15shared and that's really why i do this and why we want it to be so nice for everybody to see i appreciate
34:21you sharing the story i really do it was enlightening to hear the story that bill told and he really took
34:29something that was dark and brought so much light to it from a beautiful light display to reindeer
34:38stables and a magnificent castle this display truly had it all that was a lot of different things to
34:47take in a lot of amazing things glad i was able to show that to you you really put your heart and soul
34:53into every part of it it really showed i felt it thank you and this is really the rewarding part for
34:59me all that work and sharing it with everybody really is is means a lot to me so we appreciate
35:05so much the joy that you're bringing to everybody to your grandchildren to your family to your neighbors
35:12and to me great i've seen some absolutely incredible displays but only one can be the champion
35:20of the great christmas light fight and take home fifty thousand dollars and now i have a really
35:26tough decision to make it was magical thank you so much merry christmas thank you so much for coming

36:02this christmas competition was la la la la lawless the hack family from pensock in new jersey brought
36:23summer time to december with beachy holiday vibes this is summery christmas it was a christmas vacation
36:33come to life complete with diy palm trees a tropical snowman i'm playing in the snow over here rotating
36:41beach balls and of course the big man up on the rooftop catching waves they even added special effects
36:48with a water cannon that made quite the splash shark the paul family from livermore california hatched up
36:59a priceless chick miss work of art it is about chicken wire barbara and dean wrapped their entire
37:06house in chicken wire and used it as a canvas to paint with lights they sculpted gorgeous ornaments
37:12completely out of chicken wire with a bright color palette that belonged in a modern museum you guys
37:19are like the monet of christmas the riera family from phoenix arizona built a festive fortress that
37:27sparkled like the crown jewels bill's castle themed display was a diy kingdom in a snowy winter wonderland
37:34complete with reindeer stables that were a sleigh load of fun on prancer
37:39that's it right up there and now it's claws for celebration and i have the perfect gift for the occasion

37:59you know i have to tell you that your christmas beach vacation display is like a dream destination
38:24for anybody and so that's why you're the champions of the great christmas life
38:32the ingenuity of the things that you guys pulled together to create this beautiful display blew my
38:50mind the way that water slowly rippled i thought that was so cool and then you flip the switch here
38:57i usually see lights on the roof and pixels on the ground but you swapped it out and created the coolest
39:04effect of waves for santa to ride the waves surfing away up there on the roof the water cannons i mean
39:13so fun and lauren you and your spreadsheets your spreadsheets are amazing i remember you wrote a
39:19little something in your yearbook of what your goal would be and it was to win the great christmas
39:24flight fight and we are winning the great christmas i didn't think it would happen and it was
39:31definitely not something i expected to come true so quickly but it happened manifestation station
39:39love that since we won can you sign my yearbook of course go grab it and a pen i need to sign that
39:46thing and what do you feel about all of this i i can't i have no words i'm speechless i love that we
39:54loved having you here and being a part of our family vacation for a short time so it was awesome
39:59yeah i'll come on vacation with you guys anytime just let me know let me know there it is do you have

40:57well deserved oh my god best christmas gift yeah for sure just the fact that we can all
41:04do this together is is what makes it special my kids my brothers everybody helps out it really means
41:09a lot that all our hard work paid off we won yeah that's right all right all right so where are
41:17we going to display this thing how about we put it on the lifeguard tower perfect spot let's go
41:27we just won the great christmas life fight what are we going to do to celebrate let's go to the shore
