00:00and reading the book and watching the show is so like similar to what we read in the book but the
00:03one big difference i saw was there's no bear tattoo and i know it's the boston raiders and
00:09the show not the boston bears can we talk about where the bear tattoo went was there ever discussion
00:13about it or would it just be too messy to have it in makeup every time you you're on set is jacob
00:19on this call or is it just us because jacob would have jacob would have a long dissertation probably
00:25about that um yeah i think it was kind of a legal thing right i think that there was some sort of
00:31like you know copyright infringement or something i'm pretty sure no jacob said he didn't like it
00:36if i can quote his words okay well you have two differing opinions this is yeah i know what's
00:41going on both put words in jacob's mouth no i i actually don't know i mean i that was one of
00:45the first things that i brought up was um that and then he also gets a different tattoo and a
00:50different book and um yeah i was really nervous though that the book lovers were gonna go crazy
00:57you know because i mean they've imagined you know multiple books with this character being
01:02this certain way um but yeah i guess people were kind of like all right next you know there's been
01:08a lot of talk about the sex scenes they're so well crafted so well choreographed you got the way
01:12they're lit and shot is so i think spectacular and different for the genre um but i did notice in
01:17episode four the lighting changes drastically in the earlier episodes you have the dark
01:21lit hotel rooms and now we have the bright natural sunlight in ilia's house um i'm curious if there
01:27was thought put into just the way the lighting would affect or reflect where your character's
01:32emotional states are on this journey yeah that's yeah i was also the gaffer on the show so i
01:37saw everything um no jack and the talk perel um our dop um i asked a little bit uh talked with
01:46jacob a little bit about this and it seemed um that even when they did the walkthroughs of location
01:50if my memory serves which it often doesn't i i think there was a lot of conversation about sort of
01:57you know how light changes how colors change uh to kind of represent them um you know getting
02:03metaphorically closer to out of the the dark with their relationship and you know confidence in
02:10their sexuality and and their relationship yeah another an interesting lighting thing i think
02:16not just with the intimacy but also with the hockey is like all of the hockey scenes feel so different
02:21than um in their real lives like we kind of get that espn you know hyperbolic super bright like game
02:29time vibe and i think that's a really interesting distinction between kind of some of the softer or
02:34even sometimes moodier lightings and setups that we have when they're together and then this sort of
02:40like stark you know bounced white light of like being in the spotlight yeah that's a cool that's
02:45cool lighting difference this is also the tune-em-out episode which is a huge sort of olive branch of
02:52emotional intimacy from ilia to shade you like tuna melt you want to make me tuna melt i was
03:00gonna make one for me you like them yeah girls i'm curious you guys can take me through what you
03:09guys are both thinking when you guys are becoming more domestic potentially in this romance oh becoming
03:18more i mean i think you can see in those scenes that it feels new and uncomfortable um and exciting
03:26in a different way i mean these characters you know go across a lot of situations a lot of first
03:33together um maybe not so much for ilia but definitely for shane and we and hudson does a
03:37really good job of showing that um i think those initial scenes in the house leading up to the tuna melt
03:43and around the tuna melt even in the edit and everything it kind of it breathes a little bit you know and
03:49you see us um really uncomfortable in a different light and you also start start to see the dynamic
03:56kind of shift which i think is really interesting where ilia when it comes to sex has always been
04:01pretty confident and you know self-aware of what of his comfort level with that um and that's kind
04:08of shane is a little outside of his realm at first and then once it starts to get to this connected
04:12emotional vulnerable transparent place then you start to see ilia kind of seize up a little bit
04:19um you know and shane uh try to be be able to dig a little deeper until he can't hudson this is the
04:26week where shane meets rose landry played by the great sophie nelise i'm curious we're like working
04:30with her and was there any talk about that one moment where she's in the box watching him being
04:36kind of an homage to taylor and travis oh um no there was no mention of taylor and travis uh but
04:46i see the similarities now um but yeah no working with sophie was great you know when she was coming
04:52in you know she came in a little later to the production um you know connor and i were just such
04:57goofballs and you know we we already had like the unwritten rules laid out of you know how we
05:03engage and how we you know create and craft these these intimate scenes and with sophie i had to
05:09like make sure i was very consciously going okay let's be safe this is a different person we have
05:14to start from square one um and then she came in and was just as you know raunchy as the set was you
05:23know she she joked she was very comfortable um and you know it was just nice that she could
05:30match that that energy and and that sort of work style that the set had established which was like
05:37you could go from joking one second and then we go into the heaviest scene um which for me is is
05:44helpful when you know the day can be heavy scenes you know in between you don't want to go in a
05:50corner and just you know listen to sad music um and she matched that sort of style perfectly
05:56uh she's become a really good friend and yeah love working with her i sort of thought it was
06:02really fascinating in this episode when the two guys are kind of not talking and then they take
06:06the ice together and they're not at their best professionally i'm curious how much you guys saw
06:11their rivalry on the ice as a sort of form of flirtation or communication between them um subtly
06:16and if that's what was playing out the rivalry is always the interesting part of this to me because
06:22uh as an actor at least i look at my story as ilia almost secularly from the entire thing at first
06:32you know i'm not looking at both parts and how they feed into this thing i'm kind of trying to
06:37feed into the reality of my character and so the rivalry i'm like i'm like we start making love
06:43pretty quick you know i'm like how much of a rivalry really is there you know um so i see from ilia's
06:50perspective uh because the hot topic kind of point of controversy and i've talked to rachel about this
06:57and she pseudo confirmed this i'm like i don't think ilia really gives a shit about hockey i think
07:02ilia likes to be good at stuff happens to be hockey um and it gets a sense of power from being one of the
07:10best at something um so i think the rivalry is more so uh me trying to poke at shame you know and seeing
07:18seeing that bubble up yeah same with shane i think he it's less about a competition with ilia
07:25and more of just he needs to win no matter who's in front of him you know hockey is his life he's
07:31obsessive about it he needs to win he needs to be the best and i think you know it's no matter where
07:39he is with ilia it's it's just as hard to keep that relationship relationship separate you know
07:45if it's flirtatious it's distracting if you know he feels like ilia hates him in in their private life
07:51or isn't really talking with them then it's also hard so it's just i think you know there's a
07:59juxtaposition and both need to be handled sort of for shane i think compartmentalized to a degree
08:05because he can't really infuse those two worlds together very well the last episode is called the
08:12cottage and book careers kind of know what that might allude to we see sort of shane's house
08:17tease this episode can you give any teases for the fans um you know of the books will they be
08:23you know satisfied or do that changes what can you kind of tease for people in the weeks ahead
08:28i can only think of one difference in it and i don't think it matters at all
08:33uh yeah uh what can we tease no i mean i don't i i i think it's i think it's very very true to the
08:42book um that's my favorite episode personally that's my favorite part of the entire thing
08:47there is some difference in episode six versus the end of heated rivalry i i hope they enjoy
08:54um but i think the sort of um soul of it and the sentiment is uh very i don't remember that at all
09:03we obviously won't say anything but i don't i don't know what he's talking about
09:06jacob ends it well we'll talk about it we'll talk about it we'll figure it out
