00:00Tell me a little bit about your decision to open up about your mental health.
00:07Was there a trigger of sort that you were like, I should talk about this publicly?
00:11I think the therapist was like, I think it started with me being in the studio when I started doing therapy.
00:17And my therapist was like, why don't you just write a song about it?
00:21And so that's how Psycho Freak and a lot of songs came about.
00:25And then that has transferred to talking about it in the studio.
00:29And then talking about it in interviews.
00:32And now I'm just like, I feel like before you talk about stuff like that, it can feel so scary or shameful.
00:38And then you talk about it and you're like, oh, it's kind of like not a big deal.
00:43And makes other people feel really relieved too.
00:46So, it's kind of no downside.
00:48So, I have to ask, have you seen the How to Love memes of you?
00:51Yes, of course, I love them.
00:52It's a strange dynamic in Hollywood.
00:54It's a strange transformation when you go from like, quote unquote, ingenue, young lead to mother, older lead.
01:06And, you know, sometimes I feel really old because I'm seeing all these young actors on all these incredible shows that I'm just obsessed with.
01:13And I'm like, God, I've reached a new age.
01:16And it's great because I get the opportunities I get are actually way better and more interesting for me as a parent and all that.
01:24And sometimes I'm like, wow, I feel so f***ing old.
01:27And then I see memes and I'm like, I think I really like this.
01:33This is good for me.
01:36To be folded into the younger kind of social media generation.
01:42I'm not on TikTok, but I did get a name.
01:45I took a name just in case.
01:47And then I just never went on.
01:49Your character, Samantha, in Sex and the City was such an icon for so many young women.
01:54She explored sexual freedom.
01:56And right now it kind of feels like women's sexual freedom is under attack a little bit by the government.
02:01What are your thoughts on what's going on right now?
02:04I believe that every woman should have the right to choose her health care.
02:10That is her right.
02:12Would you ever be interested in doing a Kinky Boots movie of some sort?
02:16Yeah, they would do it.
02:17Too many, they're still talking.
02:19Right.
02:19Like, child, I got bills to pay.
02:20Call me when you're ready.
02:21Is there a story that you'd love to tell that has not been told yet that you think, you know.
02:25Child, I just wrote a book.
02:27I told all the stories.
02:28It's called Unprotected.
02:30You can buy the audio book or you can read it.
02:33All the stories are there, 279 pages.
02:36Oh my gosh, was that cathartic for you to be able to.
02:38Yes, it's very.
02:39Yeah.
02:40What prompted that?
02:41Am I allowed to drink on screen?
02:43You may have to cut that off.
02:45Tell me a little bit about your latest role on television and how I met your father.
02:50Very fun to be back on there working with Hilary Duff in such an all-star cast.
02:55What's that been like for you?
02:56I love that job.
02:57I love Hilary Duff.
02:58She's great.
02:59She's terrific.
02:59I did a movie with Robert De Niro called About My Father.
03:04I'm doing a lot of shows about fathers right now.
03:07And another reboot of a show called Queer as Folk.
03:13Yes.
03:14And is that about the LGBTQ community?
03:18Is that like most of the stories that we tell, that's definitely a major part of it, but it's
03:26about families and friends and a time in their history.
03:31It's a really touching story.
03:33Have you watched yourself back in the dropout?
03:35Oh, yeah.
03:35And what's it like seeing yourself truly take on another human being?
03:41I'm never really seeing that.
03:43I'm not objective.
03:44I can't be that.
03:47But I watch it because I appreciate how it's edited.
03:53And I appreciate all the performances.
03:56And I check my performance just to see, you know, I don't hate on myself, but I don't
04:00love on myself either.
04:02It's just like, I want to see it back.
04:03Right.
04:03The work that you put in.
04:05Yes.
04:05And then if it's a really good episode, I can talk about it with like more pride.
04:10Yes, of course.
04:11Because I'm like, no, that was really good.
04:12They did a good job.
04:13Why do you think that stories of these kind of, not con artists, but egomaniacs are really
04:20prominent these days and people are watching them and loving them?
04:23Well, I think because they're being caught, it's important to show that they're not getting
04:29away with it.
04:30Yeah.
04:30They're not.
04:30I mean, there are a lot of people who are getting away with it, but a lot of people are
04:33held responsible and so don't even f***ing try it.
04:36I mean, that's one of my perspectives.
04:38I think also people just really love a fall from grace.
04:44They love a downfall and they love, you know, an uprising for sure, but we love a downfall
04:50more because we get to, um, we get to, we, they get in trouble.
04:57We, you know, and it's, they get held, they're held responsible.
05:03I think that we love, we just, we love that as, as a cult, as a society.
05:06I think, I love it.
05:07Um, and, uh, but it is important.
05:09It's like a, it's also a lesson, you know, you see how we've, we've, um, we're culpable
05:17as a society.
05:18Can we see you back on Broadway?
05:20Uh, I'm working on it.
05:21We'll see.
05:22All right.
05:22You know, I'm not going to be doing eight shows a week for three years no more, but we'll
05:26see.
05:27HL, Hollywood Life.
05:29That'll work.
05:30Love.
05:30You look like you're a Hollywood Life person.
05:32Oh, thank you.
