04:05A few years ago, when Roy was still a pup, giving him a bath was a snap.
04:19But now, he's fully grown, and it's not quite as easy as it used to be.
04:24But having a gigantic pet does have its advantages.
04:29This is a collection of some of my favorite pet stories called Pet Stories You Don't Have to Walk.
04:35One of the stories inside is about a little boy who has the biggest pet you can possibly imagine.
04:44Pet Stories You Don't Have to Walk.
04:48Selections from Danny and the Dinosaur by Sid Hoff.
04:53Read by Jason Alexander.
04:58Danny loved dinosaurs.
05:00He wished he had one.
05:02I'm sorry they are not real, said Danny.
05:05It would be nice to play with a dinosaur.
05:08And I think it would be nice to play with you, said a voice.
05:13Oh, good, said Danny.
05:15What can we do?
05:17I could take you for a ride, said the dinosaur.
05:21He put his head down so Danny could get on him.
05:24Let's go, said Danny.
05:27A policeman stared at them.
05:30He had never seen a dinosaur stop for a red light.
05:33The dinosaur was so tall, Danny had to hold up the ropes for him.
05:38Look out, said Danny.
05:41Bow, bow, said a dog running after them.
05:44He thinks you are a car, said Danny.
05:47Go away, dog.
05:49We are not a car.
05:50I can make noise like a car, said the dinosaur.
05:55Honk, honk, honk.
05:58I love to climb, said the dinosaur.
06:02Down, boy, said Danny.
06:05Some people were waiting for a bus.
06:08They rode on the dinosaur's tail instead.
06:10All who want to cross the street may walk on my back, said the dinosaur.
06:17Danny and the dinosaur went all over town and had lots of fun.
06:22It's good to take an hour or two off after a hundred million years, said the dinosaur.
06:33That was a good one, huh, Roy?
06:35Danny and his dinosaur were just right for each other.
06:38They were a perfect match.
06:40Having a pet is about love and trust, no matter how unusual or unlikely your pet may be.
06:47I'm Baldum Estrada.
07:03This is my African gray parrot.
07:05His name is Bubu.
07:07He's been with me for the last seven years.
07:10He's about eight and a half years old.
07:12Well, when Bubu takes a shower with me, the minute Bubu hears the water, he knows it's
07:18time for fun.
07:20And one thing that he likes best in the shower is when I spray him with a hose sprayer, especially
07:26when I put the hose under his wings or under his chest.
07:29He really loves that.
07:31I have a special little dryer for Bubu.
07:32The minute he comes out of the shower, I have to dry it.
07:36I have a special little dryer for Bubu.
07:40The minute he comes out of the shower, I have to dry him real fast because I don't want
08:02Bubu to catch her cold.
08:03Even when you're wet, you look pretty.
08:06Wet baby right now.
08:10Don't have it at baby, don't you?
08:12Oh, you don't want to spray?
08:14I'm going to dry you off.
08:16Who's your number one friend?
08:19Baldum.
08:22Now we're going to make it smell nice, Bubu.
08:24Every time he comes out of the shower, I blow dry him.
08:27And then here comes the cologne.
08:28Right away, Bubu loves that cologne.
08:30Yes!
08:31Let me see, let me see.
08:31Oh, you smell so good.
08:35Bubu, you look terrific.
08:36I'll buy some pasta.
08:37Let's go get some pasta.
08:40Wow, Bubu, this is fantastic.
08:43We're going to have a great lunch this afternoon.
08:46I always tell Agnes, my wife, to set up the table for six.
08:52The three kids, the extra kid over here, me and her.
08:56Because Bubu's part of the family now, right, Bubu?
08:59Hey, Bubu, you like the pasta?
09:02This is great.
09:05Wait a minute now.
09:06We play this little game, like I won't give him the food, and he's expecting me to give him the food.
09:11And I try to pull away.
09:12And every time I pull away, he reaches even further to grab it.
09:16Hey, hey, hey, hey, what are you doing?
09:20You took my pasta.
09:23Bubu, you like the pasta?
09:27We've got to get some soda.
09:28At the beginning, I approached him, I tried to talk to him, and he would not pay attention to me.
09:36So I noticed that every time I had food on my hands, he would start looking at me.
09:41So I realized that I probably could try to win his friendship with food.
09:47We became friends after, I would say, close to three years, little by little.
09:52We started to spend a lot of time together.
09:56And by doing that, I won his trust.
10:01And I'm the only person that he probably trusts in the entire world.
10:04To him, I'm like his best friend.
10:06There you go, Roy.
10:11Good dog.
10:13Being best friends with an animal is a lot like being best friends with a person.
10:18Sometimes you have to work at it.
10:19Sometimes it's just pure joy.
10:22In pet stories, you don't have to walk.
10:25There's a tale about a young pup and his owner who discover both.
10:34Excerpt from A Dog's Tale.
10:36By Seymour Reet.
10:37Pictures by Kate Flanagan.
10:40Read by Jason Alexander.
10:44When I was a tiny puppy, I lived at the pound.
10:48But I was very lonely.
10:51I wanted a person to love.
10:55A person all my own.
10:57Then, one wonderful day, I saw Wendy.
11:01She was just right for me.
11:04So, I let her take me home.
11:07Wendy was a good kid.
11:09But she never had a puppy before.
11:12She had lots to learn.
11:14Lucky she had me to teach her.
11:17First, I helped her pick my name.
11:19She called me Spot.
11:21Brr.
11:22Then, Skippy.
11:24Brr.
11:25When she called me Ruff, I barked.
11:28Brr.
11:29Brr.
11:29Brr.
11:29I had to teach her that puppies eat at least three times a day.
11:35I always remind her if she forgets.
11:37Brr.
11:38Brr.
11:38Brr.
11:38I even had to teach Wendy that puppies need lots of fresh water.
11:46Wendy finally got the hang of it.
11:49She found a big box and made a warm, cozy bed for me.
11:54But sometimes, I just have to snuggle in Wendy's bed.
11:58It makes her so happy.
12:01Brr.
12:01Brr.
12:02In you go, Roy.
12:14Wendy found just the right pet at an animal shelter, a place where pets without homes meet
12:20people who want pets.
12:22Adopting a homeless dog or cat can be a wonderful experience, but it takes a lot of thought and
12:27planning.
12:28Here at the North Shore Animal League, America, families can find their perfect pet by spending
12:40lots of time with them.
12:42Hey, careful here.
12:49Some people come looking for dogs or puppies.
12:53Others, for cats or kittens.
12:55It's an adoption agency with hundreds of animals to choose from.
13:02And because an adoption is forever, it's important to choose the right pet for you.
13:07This adoption card tells you everything you need to know to make the best choice.
13:14Big dogs need a home with lots of room to run around.
13:17This little guy might be happy in a family with a small child.
13:29Volunteers are there to answer all of your questions and help you get to know your new
13:33family member.
13:34Are you sure?
13:38He's a handsome boy, doesn't you think?
13:40And we have another cat at home.
13:44Older dogs make great pets.
13:48After all, it wasn't long ago that they were puppies, too.
13:51She wants a treat.
13:55There we are.
13:57There we are.
13:59There we are.
14:00The only way to know for sure is to spend plenty of time together.
14:03Look at you.
14:06Hi, Lisa.
14:08Sharp.
14:09Hi, Lisa.
14:10A friendly setting, too, right?
14:12I need your baby, too, so now we have an experience of a baby dog.
14:17There's no more.
14:20Look how cute he is.
14:21Once you know which pet is right for you, applications are filled out.
14:27Uh-huh.
14:27Yes, I have your friend, Jeannie.
14:28And references are checked and rechecked.
14:31All to make for a successful adoption.
14:33Um, and I need to ask you a few questions.
14:36Okay, and over here.
14:41The best part of any adoption is the magical moment when a new pet is added to your family.
14:50Hi, Lisa.
14:51Hello.
14:52Let me see.
14:53Hi, little boy.
14:56It's okay.
14:57It's okay.
15:00Isn't he, sweetie?
15:01You're a lucky boy, aren't you?
15:03You want to come home with that?
15:05Huh?
15:06Oh, my God.
15:07Oh, my God.
15:07Oh, my God.
15:08Oh, my God.
15:08Oh, my God.
15:09Oh, my God.
15:09Oh, my God.
15:10One of the most amazing adoptions ever happened to Scarlet, a very brave cat.
15:16This is Scarlet.
15:20She's a beautiful, beautiful calico cat.
15:23She looks a little different from most calicos because she was badly burned in a fire.
15:28Scarlet lived on the streets.
15:30She didn't have a home.
15:31She found a garage, made a home for her babies, and the garage caught fire.
15:36She went in and saved each of her kittens one at a time.
15:39She pulled each one out, and each time she went into this garage, she got more badly burned.
15:45And if a very nice fireman hadn't saved her and brought her to the North Shore Animal League,
15:50she wouldn't be here with us today.
15:52We're very lucky that we have her.
15:55She spent three months in the hospital recuperating.
15:58I wanted Scarlet because I was in a very bad car accident, and it left me with a little bit of a problem when I walked.
16:08And I thought, I wanted a cat like myself who wasn't quite perfect anymore.
16:13The North Shore Animal League received so many letters and phone calls from people all over the world wanting to adopt her.
16:20And my letter was chosen.
16:23I couldn't believe it.
16:24It was better than winning the lottery.
16:26It was better than winning a million dollars.
16:30Nothing could compare to winning this beautiful cat.
16:34And I think she wants to eat breakfast with us.
16:36Whoops.
16:40Do you like that?
16:42That's your favorite.
16:43That's tuna.
16:45I think that cats who've gone through, and dogs who've gone through difficult times,
16:50become more loving and make great pets.
16:52Life with Scarlet is so much fun.
16:56When we first got her, she was a skinny little cat.
16:59You could see by her profile, she's not skinny anymore.
17:02She gets lots of food, lots of love.
17:06We're always playing and running around and jumping.
17:10And in the middle of the night, sometimes, she'll jump on top of me and say,
17:14Let's play!
17:16I love to feed her from my hand.
17:20I love the feel of her tongue against the palm of my hand.
17:23You're my baby.
17:24I love you.
17:26I love you.
17:27The thing she likes the most is tissue paper.
17:31She loves to jump in it, hunt for toys that are buried underneath it.
17:34It's my favorite thing to do with Scarlet, is to hug her and kiss her.
17:41Yeah, you're the best.
17:42You're the best.
17:45She makes me happy.
17:46I make her happy.
17:48I think she's the most beautiful cat in the world.
17:51She saved her babies.
17:52She's a hero.
17:53Okay, Roy.
17:59Happy birthday, buddy.
18:00This is it.
18:01This is your surprise.
18:03The restaurant of your dreams.
18:05Worried about no dogs allowed?
18:07Not at this place.
18:08This is the three-dog bakery.
18:11Come on, Roy.
18:11Let's go.
18:12Come on.
18:15Look at all of this.
18:17It's hard to believe that these cakes are for dogs.
18:20They look so good.
18:21I want to eat them.
18:24Look at this, Roy.
18:25Doesn't all of this look just delicious?
18:27Huh, boy?
18:27Hey, is this Roy the birthday boy?
18:29This is him, the one and only.
18:30Hey, this is Mark Bodner.
18:32He's one of the owners here at the three-dog bakery.
18:35What I'm going to do is take Roy, go get him settled in.
18:37You can take a look at the menu, get ready for the birthday party.
18:39Thanks a lot, Mark.
18:40We'll see you later.
18:40Bye, Roy.
18:42And this is Leanna.
18:43She is the head pastry chef here.
18:46Now, Leanna, this all looks like pastry I would eat myself.
18:50Well, you could.
18:51It's all normal ingredients.
18:52The main difference is we just don't use any salt or sugar.
18:56So right here on this platter, we have a large pup cake, a bulldog bar, which is a great treat
19:01for the big dogs, a wagon wheel, a set of ruffles, a Labrador loaf, small pup cake and
19:08pup tart, which is a great treat for the little guys, and a pettifor for special occasions.
19:13It's amazing.
19:14And you make all of this right here.
19:15I do.
19:16Do you want to find out how?
19:17Can I?
19:17You bet.
19:19Here we go.
19:23All right.
19:24So to make a cake, we need to start first with our wet ingredients.
19:28You mean water.
19:28That's right.
19:31And then we'll add some applesauce.
19:33Uh-huh.
19:33Now, is this because you don't put sugar in it?
19:35So this is for the sweetening.
19:36That's right.
19:37It sweetens it.
19:38So this applesauce, it doesn't have any sugar in it either.
19:40It's just apples and waters all mixed up.
19:42Okay.
19:44Now we're going to add some baking powder.
19:46Mm-hmm.
19:46That's going to help our cake rise.
19:48Rise.
19:49Right.
19:49Now we're going to pour in our cake powder now.
19:52Uh-huh.
19:52And this is not a normal cake powder.
19:55What's different about it?
19:56It doesn't have salt or sugar.
19:57Mm-hmm.
19:58All right.
19:58That looks good to me.
19:59Is that enough?
20:00That looks perfect.
20:00Oh, cool.
20:01Now we're just going to transfer it here into this pan.
20:04Right.
20:05For baking.
20:06It's a big sheet pan.
20:07Now this will go into the oven for 30 minutes.
20:10Okay.
20:10Good consistency.
20:12I'm a good mixer.
20:13That's right.
20:16And here we have the finished cake.
20:19Wow.
20:20And now to make a bone-shaped cake, we use this stencil.
20:25We're just going to cut it out by hand, corner to corner.
20:31So this will actually give us a cake in the shape of a dog bone.
20:35That's cute.
20:36Yeah.
20:36That's great.
20:38There we go.
20:40That's one bone, huh?
20:41That's right.
20:41Careful.
20:42It's a little fragile.
20:43Okay.
20:43Gotcha.
20:44Now, this is where the fun part starts.
20:46What comes next?
20:47We get to frost the cake.
20:48My favorite part.
20:49That's right.
20:50So we have some peanut butter flavored frosting right here.
20:53May I?
20:54Yeah.
20:55May I?
20:56Sure.
20:58Wow.
20:59Not bad.
21:00That is really good.
21:01That is excellent.
21:03Yeah.
21:03Okay, so it's just like now.
21:05It's just like frosting a regular cake, right?
21:06That's right.
21:07Just kind of slather and spread, right?
21:08That's right.
21:09Nice and thick.
21:10Okay.
21:11Now we're ready to add the finishing touches.
21:13A little decoration?
21:14That's right.
21:15Okay.
21:15How does pink and yellow sound?
21:16Pink and yellow are some of Roy's favorite colors.
21:19Perfect.
21:20So, right along the edge, you're just going to squirt a star, leave a space, and squirt another
21:25star.
21:25Squirt a star, leave a space, squirt another star.
21:28Mm-hmm.
21:29There we go.
21:30We have the yellow.
21:32And the pink.
21:33Yeah.
21:34Looks nice.
21:34That's great.
21:36All righty.
21:36So, now that we've finished with our rosettes, we're ready for the finishing touch, which
21:41is...
21:42The writing?
21:44You got it.
21:44This is a test.
21:46Oh, my goodness.
21:47I've got to get the right answer.
21:48Okay.
21:49So, what are we going to write?
21:49Happy birthday, Roy.
21:51Sounds good.
21:51All righty.
21:52Now, this is melted carob.
21:54Carob.
21:55No, not chocolate.
21:56That's right.
21:57In fact, it's really important that you remember dogs can't have chocolate.
22:01It makes them very sick.
22:03That's right.
22:03All right.
22:04So, now we're going to write Roy.
22:08All righty.
22:09I think we're ready.
22:13That's a thing of beauty.
22:18Okay, everybody.
22:19It's time to howl.
22:21Happy birthday to Roy.
22:22Are you ready?
22:33Well, should we cut the cake?
22:36What do you think, Roy?
22:38If seeing all of these nutritious treats has given you an appetite for more, then here
22:43are some pet books you'll want to devour.
22:46But you don't have to take our word for it.
22:50Hi.
22:51I'm Ahmed.
22:52Here's to talk to you about our great pet czar.
22:55The girl in this book has a very unusual pet.
22:59The book is called Harry and Lulu.
23:02Lulu begs her parents for a dog.
23:05But they say no.
23:08Instead, they give her a stuffed animal.
23:12Lulu went, Lulu.
23:14I want a real dog.
23:16One night, Lulu wakes up to, woof, woof.
23:20Wait a minute.
23:21You're not a dog.
23:22But she finds out differently when they have an adventure together in Paris.
23:29By the end of the story, Lulu is crazy about Harry.
23:34Even if you don't have a real pet, you can use your imagination.
23:39And voila, you've got one.
23:42If you want to be inspired, read Harry and Lulu.
23:46Hello, pet lovers everywhere.
23:48I'm Samantha, and I read a story about a girl and a pet that will make you smile from ear to ear.
23:55It's called Aloha, Dolores.
23:58Dolores and her sister, Faye, went shopping for cat food.
24:03The Meow's Munchies Company was having a contest.
24:08First prize accrues to Hawaii.
24:11She's sure that she and Duncan will win.
24:15Dolores says aloha to everyone she meets.
24:20Aloha, she says to the plumber.
24:23Aloha, she says to the dentist.
24:26Finally, the big day comes.
24:29The winner is...
24:32Fifi, a Siamese cat from Indiana.
24:36Poor Dolores.
24:38I have a bird, two dogs, and two hermit crabs, and I know how Dolores felt.
24:45But there's a happy ending.
24:47Read Aloha, Dolores.
24:49Hi, I'm Jimmy, and sometimes the search for a pet can take you to some pretty interesting places, maybe even the moon.
24:58Take this story, for instance, Moondogs.
25:01It's about a boy named Will whose dad thinks he needs a pet.
25:05Will is a scientific type.
25:08He decides the moon is the perfect place to find the perfect pet, a moondog.
25:14On his way to the moon, Will goes to get a snack.
25:17Can you guess what he discovers eating from his pack?
25:21There are a lot of excellent moon creatures in the story.
25:25And a scary one, too.
25:27You can find out what happens by reading this book, so blast off to your local library today.
25:47How you doing, Roy?
