Do we build enough in the city?
Transcript
00:00London is pushing ahead with a new wave of redevelopment, with major public spaces and cultural projects moving forward across the city.
00:11Two schemes advanced recently, signalling a continued shift towards reclaiming busy streets here in the capital.
00:19In the square mile, updated designs for a 3,500 square metre public square beside St Paul's Cathedral have been approved.
00:29The new Greyfriars Square forms part of a £19 million redevelopment.
00:35Meanwhile, in the West End, Westminster councillors have backed plans for a temporary theatre in the former Marble Arch Mound site.
00:45The pop-up venue, described by its applicants as resembling a Minecraft tree, won unanimous approval and is scheduled to operate from April 2026 to June 2028.
01:00So then, do Londoners think this city is modern enough?
01:04Are there enough new developments?
01:06Or do locals just enjoy the history?
01:09I love the mix between modern and the old.
01:15I mean, I've got so many friends and clients who are involved in these big building of things.
01:24And then, I love the history as well.
01:27So, yeah, both of it.
01:30I love it.
01:30Not just in London, but in Europe, that you have a mix of history and modernity.
01:37So, I don't think any city should try to preserve themselves as an antique.
01:47London is a world city.
01:50It's a business centre.
01:53It's a financial centre.
01:54It's obviously a government centre.
01:58So, no, London is a full-on city.
02:03It has everything.
02:04London is so different.
02:06Yeah.
02:07My neighbour was in Kuwait last week.
02:11And I think Kuwait is 60 years old or 70 years old.
02:15And it was just a small fishing village.
02:17And then that was building up.
02:19And London has got so much history.
02:21And, yeah, the history of London is incredible, I think.
02:27So, yeah, that's why I'm such a big fan of, London.
02:32But I do love the fact that London, with all the boroughs, you have, like what we're on here,
02:40which is basically a high street for this local area.
02:43I like the fact that it doesn't have one monolithic centre where it's diverse, it's spread out, and it has many centres.
02:57So, that's a good aspect of London.
