Malaysia’s clean energy transition will be a key factor shaping the nation’s competitiveness for the next 50 years, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Speaking at the launch of Race to Zero 2026 during the Clean Energy Transition Asia (CETA) Summit 2025 on Thursday (Dec 11), Fadillah, who also serves as Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, highlighted that by 2030, Asean’s electricity consumption is expected to match that of Japan and South Korea combined.

He added that achieving a responsible energy transition in the region would require US$200bil to US$300bil (RM821bil to RM1.23 trillion) in annual clean energy investments.

00:00Under the Madani government, Petra is not simply planning an energy system.
00:10We are crafting a future-ready ecosystem which is secure, low-carbon, flexible and interconnected.
00:19But every great vision is built on reality, on data, on engineering and unbearable confidence.
00:28Russia's goal is ambitious, 70% renewable capacity by 2050.
00:35Solar will grow five-fold.
00:38Green-scale battery system will stabilize our future grids.
00:43Over one gigawatt of storage is already moving under nature.
00:49But Russia's energy storage is not confined within its borders.
00:53As an anchor nation in the ASEAN power grid, we are shaping a regional energy corridor where electrons flow freely across nations, lowering costs, improving stability and elevating competitiveness.
01:12Tuan Abdul Razak once reminded us, I quote,
01:16Development is not about adding wealth to numbers but expanding opportunities for people, unquote.
01:24So this is precisely what energy transition must do.
01:29Expand opportunities, create new industries and ensure prosperity is shared.
01:36So ladies and gentlemen, every transformation has milestones, markers or progress that tell us we are moving in the right direction.
01:46Allow me to share ours.
01:49Firstly, Energy Exchange Malaysia or Energem.
01:53Malaysia's first 500 MW renewable energy export to Singapore is more than a technical achievement.
02:02It is a proof of capability, trust and regional readiness.
02:07Secondly, corporate renewable energy supply scheme or crash.
02:12Corporate RE adoption is rising sharply because Malaysia offers what global businesses seek.
02:19Stability, competitive tariffs and direct access to green electronics.
02:26Thirdly, accelerating RE at scale where we are preparing to add up 2 gigawatt of new RE capacity annually, creating jobs, building supply chains and shaping green industrial clusters.
02:43The reflection is simple.
02:45Energy powers industries but clarity of vision powers transformation.
02:51Malaysia chooses purpose over passivity.
02:56So ladies and gentlemen, every region has defined or has a defining project.
03:03For ASEAN, it is the ASEAN power grid.
03:06Malaysia sits at the heart of this system with five existing interconnections and more being developed.
03:14ASEAN aims for full regional interconnections by 2045.
03:19And Malaysia will play the role of balancing hub, transit nation and anchor for multilateral power trading.
03:29We are harmonizing codes, strengthening renewable certificates and deepening green finance because a connected region is a competitive region.
03:41Ladies and gentlemen, investors today seek four things.
03:44Policy clarity, regulatory stability, competitive tariff, access to clean energy at scale.
03:55So Petra is delivering all four consistently.
04:00So to CEOs, financiers, developers and innovators, Malaysia is open.
04:07Malaysia is ready.
04:08Malaysia is committed.
04:10So Malaysia offers something rare in a volatile world.
04:14Stability, scale, connectivity and certainty.
04:19These are not just economic strengths.
04:21They are the foundations of trust.
04:25Today, we launch ASEAN to 0-2026, a nationwide movement across five states.
04:32A movement to build capabilities, to connect businesses, to unlock projects and to create momentum.
04:41Malaysia's commitments are clear to achieve zero by 2050 and 45% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030.
04:53But commitments alone don't move nations.
04:57Or momentum does.
04:59As we look across Asia, one truth stands out.
05:05Our clean energy transition will define our competitiveness for the next 50 years.
05:12The choices we make today, be it in policy, in technology, in investment, in cooperation,
05:21We will shape not only industries, but livelihoods and legacies.
05:26We have completed the officiation of Race 2-0.
05:31Thank you so much.
