00:00So you are back, I chatted to you when you were little tiny tadpoles back in the first
00:25time round.
00:26How does it feel that you're out there and you're kind of growing up on the screen?
00:30Is that weird?
00:31It's weird to have that part of my life documented.
00:33It's weird to look back and see that part of your life and I don't know, I think we're
00:38all kind of similar to our characters and so it's kind of just like watching videos
00:42of ourselves.
00:43And your voices were a lot higher, which is really cute.
00:46A little bit, yeah, but really not that much.
00:48Yeah, I guess they got a little bit deeper.
00:50It's weirder to have that period of my time documented and then so much missing.
00:55It's so much deeper for season one.
00:56I went like up here to like real damn.
00:58How's the experience been then, guys?
01:00Has it just been magical?
01:01Is it everything you wanted it to be?
01:03For sure.
01:04Yeah.
01:05But I think that people make that better though.
01:07Like I expected the press tour to happen like the press tour, but I think the people and
01:11just the audience makes it like 10 times more of the experience for real.
01:14100%.
01:15Yeah.
01:16So which one of you breaks character the most and is cheeky on set?
01:19Little sighs, little whispers.
01:20Who's the closest?
01:21Cleo.
01:22Definitely.
01:23What?
01:24I don't know.
01:25All the time.
01:26It's bad.
01:27It's bad.
01:28Every time I look at her and the camera's not on her, it's just like she's constantly
01:31pointing it back.
01:32Yeah.
01:33I mean, she does a pretty good job.
01:34She doesn't like let any noise out, but like when you're doing a serious scene and you
01:37look at her and she's like, if you just, I mean, he's really good at keeping it together.
01:41I can't keep it together.
01:42No, he's really good.
01:43Like, like, like, like the most embarrassing funniest thing can happen and he'll just be
01:47like, mm.
01:48I want an outtakes, a whole series of outtakes.
01:52I wonder when they're going to release the bloopers.
01:54Like a spare episode of just bloopers.
01:57Like it's, it's nine episodes long and one of them is just like a, yeah.
02:00Oh, yes, yes, yes.
02:01I know what you mean.
02:02Yes, yes, yes.
02:03So what about skills on set?
02:04Has anything kind of gone into your home life in your own personal life?
02:06That you've learned?
02:07Well, for when this whole like acting thing fails me, I'm going to put out a Pam Pipe EP.
02:12Oh.
02:13I'm getting pretty good at it.
02:14Genius.
02:16I love that.
02:17What would be your first song that you'd cover on the Pam Pipe?
02:19Um, I know a little bit of, um, Blackbird by the Beatles.
02:22Like a little bit.
02:23And Mr. Sandman, too.
02:24If you want the hits, babe, you've got to do Taylor Swift.
02:26You've got to do Swifty.
02:27Oh, I could do Taylor Swift.
02:28That's genius.
02:29Yeah.
02:30That is a good point.
02:31Do Ophelia.
02:32I love, that's perfect.
02:33Oh, yeah.
02:34I can't stop goat walking.
02:35Sorry.
02:36You can't stop goat walking?
02:37Yeah.
02:38I thought you were done with that.
02:39No, it's still, it's coming back.
02:40I'm sorry.
02:41Did you have no other question at all?
02:42I'm sorry.
02:43I'm sorry.
02:44I'm sorry.
02:45Keep going.
02:46I was just going to say to you, in regards to what you were nervous about bringing to
02:49light and to screen, anything in particular, this series that you were scared about showing
02:54the audiences?
02:55About, like, are you saying something that we filmed, are we afraid to show them anything?
02:59Now, what were you nervous about doing from the book?
03:02Honestly, anything that was very crucial to have in there.
03:07You know, anything that was like, anything that was newly added, I still was like, you
03:12know, I'm still nervous about how they'll take it in every single one.
03:15But I think definitely the ones that were crucial to the books that we had to put in there.
03:19I want to make sure that it's as close to connections that they felt when they were reading
03:23it like 20 years ago, 15 years ago.
03:24You know what I'm saying?
03:25I really hope they like the siren scene.
03:27Yeah.
03:28Everyone sort of like the siren scene, guys.
03:30Everybody.
03:31And are you going to be binging this at Christmas time on your sofas with your families?
03:34Say it again.
03:35Are you going to be binging it over Christmas?
03:38I don't, I don't watch it.
03:40I don't watch it.
03:41My dad love watching it and I just go upstairs whenever they do.
03:45That's so sad.
03:46Look at you guys.
03:47Yeah.
03:48It's a happy hour.
03:49Go and have an amazing time upstairs with your pals.
03:51Thank you so much.
03:52Have an amazing Christmas.
03:53Thank you so much.
03:54And I'm looking forward to the pan pipes.
03:56Thanks.
03:57I'm looking forward to it too.
03:58I wonder if they're going to like, because you learn how to play this stuff, I wonder if
04:01they're going to like put something over, but you did a really good job.
04:04The pan pipe I'm playing isn't like actually tuned right.
04:07It's kind of just like five sticks tied together.
04:09Oh, thank you so much.
04:12Can you introduce this newbie?
04:15Yes, yes, yes.
04:16Exactly.
04:17The trick to the trade.
04:18Can you give him a little tip?
04:19What happened?
04:20He's giving us tips.
04:21Can you give him a little tip?
04:22No, he's going to introduce this newbie.
04:25Oh my God.
04:26Can you give him a little tip?
04:28Were you nervous?
04:29Oh no, he was giving us tips.
04:30Yeah.
04:31He put it right in.
04:32Yeah.
04:33No, it was like right off the bat Daniel just became part of the family.
04:36He was so good this season.
04:37He's amazing.
04:38He's nice.
04:39He's nervous.
04:40Yeah.
04:41More nervous now than I was when I started.
04:43I think when I started, again, the welcome was so warm that I just felt like it was all
04:47going well.
04:48And better work with this boy.
04:49So it's been an absolute pleasure.
04:51So not too many nerves.
04:52Yeah.
04:53He was great.
04:54I'm sorry.
04:55You guys are great.
04:56You guys are matching.
04:57It's so cute.
04:58Are you going to binge yourselves at Christmas time?
04:59How does it work?
05:00Because everyone's talking about it.
05:01It's going to be everywhere.
05:02This is a great interview.
05:03I'm sorry.
05:04Are you going to binge yourselves at Christmas time?
05:05How does it work?
05:06I mean, it comes out weekly.
05:07It comes out weekly.
05:08It comes out weekly on Disney Plus and Hulu.
05:09Every Wednesday.
05:10Everybody watch.
05:11Every Wednesday.
05:12I've got skills on set.
05:13Do you know how to do the chicken chiro and the lies at home?
05:14No.
05:15No.
05:16No.
05:17No.
05:18No.
05:19No.
05:20No.
05:21No.
05:22No.
05:23No.
05:24No.
05:25No.
05:26No.
05:27No.
05:28No.
05:29No.
05:30No.
05:31No.
05:32No.
05:33No.
05:34No.
05:35No.
05:36No.
05:37No.
05:38No.
05:39No.
05:40No.
05:41No.
05:42Even Yeah.
05:43No.
05:44No.
05:45No.
05:46No.
05:47I'm kidding obviously.
05:48If you get a box, who would it be?
05:50That's the question.
05:51I don't know.
05:52I think just the stunt work in general.
05:54I took up boxing.
05:55So I feel like they kind of go hand in hand.
05:57That's been really helpful.
05:58I love it.
05:59And what about what you would face?
06:00Give me Canelo.
06:01No.
06:02No.
06:03I'm kidding.
06:04No.
06:05I'm kidding.
06:06No.
06:07I'm kidding.
06:08I'm kidding.
06:09No.
06:10He's got that.
06:11The eye. The eye was the big one. You know, it's just like, again, performance and then how everything we captured on screen on the day. It was all looking amazing. I was really happy with it. So proud of these guys and the work we did together. But I was just really nervous. I mean, again, it's a big thing. The eye doesn't work. Tyson doesn't work. And ILM killed it. So much more relieved now.
06:41Who was laughing? Who was sniggering? I think we all, like, an even amount had our little moments. But we're all pretty, like, locked in when we're at work. Yeah, we're very locked in, like, on set. But I feel like... Outside of work? I feel like, like, Walker's just so... He's so Percy, you know? I think he should have done an initiation. There must have been an initiation, you know? He has that same, like, humor that Percy has. Drinking out of your shoes or something crazy like the rugby guys did.
07:05Well, we had him do the ball. Like, getting thrown into the ball exercise is a lot. Well, no, but you had an experience working with Andrew way before any of us, actually.
07:25Yeah. So, I mean, again, my first ever acting coach ended up being the acting coach on Percy Jackson as well. So it was, like, full circle for me.
07:31There will be a beer in the shoes. That's it. No initiation. They were very tame about it. But I think we've got to come up with something for the new gang. Hopefully, if we want to be a season four.
07:40This is awesome. Yeah. And by the way, congratulations on your beauty.
07:43Yeah. Especially with the age of our cast.
07:45I was told that would be perfect.
07:46Yeah.
07:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:51I think more men should have curly hair than the ring for the curls.
07:56Do you agree? Thank you so much.
07:57The entire budget of the show goes to the curly hair products that they put for us.
08:01I think more men should have curly hair than the ring for the curls.
08:04Bring the curls back.
08:05We'll do our best to keep the hair going.
08:07They're putting it. They're bringing it back to style.
08:09I used to want to have straight hair, but I love the curls now.
08:11I grew up with the Justin Bieber swoosh, and I could not pull that off to save my life.
08:15We're going to try to avoid those photos forever.
08:16I'm going to find those photos and put them everywhere.
08:19I'm going to find the photos.
08:21It's going to be Harry Stiles.
08:22You've got to throw a little bit more than you do.
08:24Well, you're in London, so there's got to be a Cheeky Nando's or something like that.
08:28Yes!
08:29Nando's!
08:30You look amazing.
08:32I really do.
08:33How are you feeling?
08:34You're back.
08:35I feel so great.
08:36I feel so great.
08:37It's so exciting.
08:38How is it just kind of watching this with the rest of the world on your sofa?
08:41Yeah.
08:42Is it just bizarre that you can kind of binge yourself?
08:44Yeah, it's ridiculous.
08:45It's such a foreign feeling to me.
08:47I think I've done movies and shows before, but this is such a beloved series that it's
08:52so exciting to be experiencing the excitement and, you know, buzz alongside everyone else.
08:57Are your mates fans?
08:58Yes.
08:59Yeah.
09:00They actually are with me tonight.
09:01My best friend Sam and Izzy love you.
09:03But yeah, they're with me tonight and we're kind of just celebrating, which is just the best
09:08ever.
09:09And also in my city too.
09:10So I'm having the best time.
09:11Yes.
09:12Perfect.
09:13Yeah.
09:14What about the whole excitement?
09:15What are you frightened about maybe telling your friends?
09:18Because there must be some spoilers.
09:19Oh, yeah.
09:20All the spoilers.
09:21Everything.
09:22I think I've been so worried about it.
09:23And also, you know, we're shooting season three right now.
09:25So FaceTime is not allowed on set.
09:27You know, none of that.
09:28But it's, I'm excited to see how they feel about the storyline and everything.
09:33So yeah, it'll be an interesting one.
09:35I'm excited we all kind of get to experience it alongside the fans.
09:37After reading the books, what was your favorite moment you were excited about bringing to life?
09:42I mean the end, surely.
09:44Like the end of the books.
09:46Thalia kind of, you know, emerging from her.
09:50I don't know how long it takes me to talk until Disney drags me away.
09:54But just the ending, I think.
09:56And also, you know, I'm so excited to see because I wasn't around for it.
10:00Like the Scylla and Charybdis fight, you know, chariot races, all of that is so incredible.
10:05And there was so much hard work put into it.
10:07So I'm very excited to see that come to life.
10:09Incredible.
10:10And what about the emotion that you put into this?
10:12Yeah.
10:13Was it difficult kind of switching off?
10:15Yeah.
10:16I mean, it was super difficult.
10:17I think that, you know, I came onto the show still grieving Lance and the loss of him.
10:21So, you know, as much as I wanted to continue his legacy by playing Thalia, it was really difficult.
10:27So I've got him with me tonight.
10:29I'm wearing the tie that he wore in episode eight, season one.
10:32And I've got the same kind of suit that he's got going on.
10:35So I'm kind of honoring him tonight to kind of just say thank you for everything.
10:39Oh, that's so lovely.
10:40Yeah.
10:41And what about on set?
10:42Who is the cheekiest of my kind of go out character, laugh and ruin the scene?
10:47I do feel like we're all pretty good.
10:49But Walker is someone, he doesn't really break in a take.
10:52He'll just smile.
10:53And that makes you want to laugh.
10:54So he's made me break a lot just because he'll turn around and he'll be like, and I'm like, why?
10:59At least laugh.
11:00At least laugh while you're breaking.
11:01So I'd say him or me and Orion seem to have a laugh a lot and kind of go a bit crazy when it comes to, you know, fooling around on set.
11:10I love it.
11:11And Toby told me that his wife dresses as a grin on Christmas Day.
11:14Oh, incredible.
11:15All green.
11:16Any kind of thing that you do in your family on Christmas Day?
11:18Ooh.
11:19Are you a dress up or a dress down?
11:21For Christmas?
11:23I think it's like a dress down, but like some makeup and some hair going on.
11:27You know what I mean?
11:28It's a nice little, if you want to take some Christmas photos, you can, but you're comfortable too, you know?
11:32That's kind of me.
11:33I think since my sister had kids, it's definitely more of a casual Christmas just because there's lots of like food smearing going on.
11:40But yeah, it's the best.
11:42Pleasure to meet you both.
11:44They do say never work with kids, animals, husbands and wives.
11:47Do you agree with that?
11:49I'd have to go with no on that.
11:51It's been a good experience.
11:52So what was it like kind of breaking up and working together and then, you know, coming home?
11:56And how does it all, how does it happen?
11:58We've done that for, what, forever.
12:01I can't even remember a time when we didn't do that.
12:04Just as a novelist, I've relied on her for years.
12:07And so, you know, we've been a team for 40 years now.
12:10And so I'm not sure I would know how to work any other way.
12:13In regards to getting your stuff made for Disney+, what's your advice out there for budding authors and novelists that want to make TV stuff?
12:21How does it work?
12:22Be very, very patient.
12:25It takes a long time.
12:29And imagine how long you think it takes.
12:32Now multiply that by 10 and you're getting closer.
12:35So just stick with it and meet people.
12:38If you want to work in the television field, you must know people and meet them.
12:42And it's just a very long process.
12:44But stick with it.
12:45How are you feeling about this point that you're at right now with these amazing series being made?
12:49Did you think it would ever happen to you?
12:51I think it's fair to say no.
12:53Did you think it?
12:54I think so.
12:55I think so.
12:56It's been an interesting ride to do this.
13:00But it's great.
13:01I am so happy that we finally get to share it with everyone.
13:04Are there any moments that you were worried about portraying on TV and on screen?
13:08Did you really kind of micromanage certain bits?
13:12You know, I think for me, I've learned where I can be most helpful.
13:16And I think that's with the scripts in particular.
13:18I can advise on that.
13:20Casting to a certain degree, we get involved in that.
13:23And that's a lot of fun.
13:24The showrunners are great.
13:25They come and say to us, you know, what will the fans kill us if we do?
13:30You know?
13:31Is this the thing?
13:33And we'll, like, no, you can change.
13:34That's fine.
13:35You know?
13:36Or, yes, yes.
13:37Yeah, where are the guardrails?
13:38That's our main job.
13:39But as you've worked and as you've gone on, social media has become a thing.
13:43Is it incredible now that you get instant feedback?
13:46Because I guess that never really used to happen.
13:49It is.
13:50It can be overwhelming.
13:51I don't pay attention to it myself.
13:53Because it is too overwhelming, too much feedback coming from too many directions.
13:58Right.
13:59I'm happy to get a summary once in a while from other people.
14:01In the old days, his editor used to fax him reviews.
14:05And so, you know, we've been in business for a long, long time.
14:08A long way.
14:09So we've seen everything.
14:10Bring the fax back.
14:11I like the sound that used to make it.
14:13I was very excited for that.
14:14And just finally, tell us something about this new series.
14:17I mean, that's perhaps different from the books or something to tease the fans.
14:21Those fans that are sat at their computer.
14:24Well, I think one scene that the fans are looking for is a scene with the sirens.
14:30Let's see, with Annabeth and Percy.
14:32It's coming.
14:33And I think they're going to be very, very pleased.
14:35Incredible.
14:36And your Christmas plans.
14:37What's happening?
14:38Toby said his wife dresses as the Grinch on Christmas Day.
14:41And she greens herself up.
14:43Do you do that?
14:44Try to play Scrabble with her sons and just take a nice break.
14:49A nice family dinner.
14:50Hi.
14:51You are really happy.
14:52Thank you very much.
14:53I'm trying to be as nautical as possible.
14:54Did you get the kind of...
14:55Yeah.
14:56Well, I thought, you know, sea of monsters, ocean colours, green and blue, etc.
15:01Yeah, for sure.
15:02So we're back for this again.
15:03Yes.
15:04How do you feel about it?
15:05I'm so happy to share this man's great work with everybody.
15:08You know, it's such a lovely thing to be able to work with him.
15:10And my kids loved these books growing up.
15:12And I read them to them and they read them themselves.
15:14And I learned them back to front.
15:15But it's so lovely to be able to bring the world to life for people on the screen.
15:18It's amazing.
15:19What do the kids think now, then, about this at all?
15:21They're really excited about it.
15:22They know it so well.
15:23Also, they're in it occasionally.
15:24Because they can be extras.
15:25They're the right age.
15:26My kids are 18, 16 and 13.
15:28So they put orange t-shirts on in the back of the shop.
15:30Watch out for them.
15:31See episode two.
15:32They're in it quite a lot.
15:33Oh, really?
15:34It's so good having your kids on set with you.
15:35It's amazing having kids on set.
15:36Because they are so...
15:37They know the stuff so well.
15:38And they're very appreciative of being there.
15:39And they're also good friends of the cast.
15:41It's very sweet.
15:42So it's lovely.
15:43I went to Toby who said that his wife dresses as the Grinch on Christmas Day.
15:46Right.
15:47Greens up.
15:48What's your kind of deal on Christmas Day?
15:49Oh.
15:50Is it Percy Jackson?
15:51Kind of like this.
15:52I'm pretty formal.
15:53But you wear a little cheap tie.
15:54I wear a tie on Christmas Day.
15:55Some sort of tartany thing, like Christmas vibe.
15:58I also wear a velvet jacket.
15:59A red velvet jacket on Christmas Day would be amazing.
16:01But yeah, I'm a kind of formal kind of dude.
16:03So I'd like a formal outfit for sure.
16:04Not the Grinch.
16:05I love that.
16:06And what were you most nervous about bringing to life from this?
16:08Because the fans really are quite hard on everything.
16:11Yes.
16:12But rightly so.
16:13No, no.
16:14But I'm a fan too.
16:15So it's just my perspective really.
16:16And I really wanted just to do it justice.
16:17I think that the important thing about being true to the book, but also at the same time
16:20let the kids express themselves as actors.
16:21And they are such great actors.
16:22And they really are these characters now.
16:24And so therefore doing the combination of the two whereby it's their show.
16:27And also Rick's book.
16:28Those two combined is the most important thing.
16:30Yeah.
16:31And they're going up against Stranger Things.
16:33The kids growing up.
16:34How do you feel about that?
16:35Going head to head.
16:36Well, it's fine because they're not that much older.
16:37We started off exactly the right age.
16:39Percy was 12 and Walker was 12.
16:40And so we started off right.
16:42And now they're like 14, 15.
16:43And season three when they're shooting right now they're 16.
16:45And so we're kind of roughly right.
16:47So we're actually on par.
16:48They're not going to be like 35 from the last season.
16:51It's going to be fine.
16:52Yeah, when the Harry Potter ends.
16:53So they're going to be kind of the same.
16:54So it's great.
16:55And they are, you know, what's great about them seeing them grow up as people,
16:57seeing them grow up as actors for me as a director.
16:59It's amazing to see what they can do.
17:00And they are such fantastic people and such great actors.
17:02It's a privilege for me.
17:03And one more thing.
17:04Yes.
17:05What can they look out for, the fans?
17:06Oh, I mean, this episode.
17:07Everyone knows.
17:08One thing you've got to tell me.
17:09Oh, okay.
17:10Watch episode four, the end of episode four.
17:12There's a huge sequence with Kryptus, the whole sea monsters are absolutely amazing.
17:16And the ironclad is spectacular.
17:18Really fantastic.
17:19Yeah.
17:20It's amazing.
17:21Hello.
17:22Nice to meet you.
17:23How do you feel about bringing it to the world again?
17:25Well, I'm really excited for everyone to see it.
17:27I mean, the first season was so popular and people loved it.
17:31So, and it's, it's such a kind of, you know, it's such a popular series of books.
17:36You know, it's, it's great when people get to see it and reimagine.
17:39Has being in the list made you popular with the kids in the family?
17:42Um, yeah, for a while.
17:45That wears off very quickly, you know.
17:47Did they ask you to get anything or?
17:50Yeah, they, I got, I got them some, you know, Camp Half-Blood t-shirts and stuff like that,
17:55which they were thrilled with.
17:56Oh, that's lovely.
17:57So, what might you know about bringing it to life in the books this time around?
18:01Well, I mean, I think this time around it was, it was fairly easy.
18:05Cause I, it's, I love doing scenes with Walker and my scene was with him and Daniel who plays his brother, my other son.
18:13And that was really, really nice.
18:15I really enjoyed it.
18:16Um, uh, but you know, it's, it's, it's always quite intimidating playing a God.
18:23You know what I mean?
18:24Having to live up to that.
18:26Yeah, I mean, it's, it's always like, um, you can play an idealized version of when, you know, the reality is always so much kind of like messier.
18:44You know, being a, being a dad is so complicated and being a parent is so complicated and it's so difficult getting things right.
18:51I mean, I think what I like about this version is they're fallible as well.
18:55Just like in the Greek myths, the gods are fallible.
18:57So they don't get everything right.
18:59And he's not the greatest dad in the world.
19:01Yeah.
19:02You've got Christmas time coming up.
19:03What happened in the family Christmas time?
19:05Was there any particular Christmas day that you always do?
19:08Well, yeah, my wife dresses up as the Grinch, which is, which is.
19:13Which is a family custom.
19:16Don't ask me why.
19:17Ask her.
19:18But anyway, it's, it's great.
19:20It embarrasses the kids.
19:21And, uh, I, I laugh a lot.
19:23Yeah.
19:24She greens up in the morning and she's there all day.
19:26Yeah.
19:27She has this outfit, which is like this green, like bodysuit Grinch outfit.
19:31It's hilarious.
19:32It's all sparkly.
19:33Yeah.
19:34And just finally, I have to ask you, why do you think this is just so big and popular?
19:39And what is it about the series which is so special?
19:42Well, I think the way that John Steinberg, uh, has reimagined, you know, has, has reimagined,
19:49uh, Rick Riordan's books has been great.
19:51I think it's really true to what Rick Riordan did initially, but it, it, it also sort of has
19:57its own thing as well.
19:58And I think the actors are fantastic in it.
20:00All the kids are really fantastic.
20:02And I think that's what makes it really them.
20:04Have a little bit time with you, Rick Riordan's house.
20:07Thank you very much, I will!
20:08Thanks, Ricka, and молод the conditions.
20:10Make your hand regularly, and I'll see you at the end of this video.
20:15Thanks, Rickaots.
20:17Thank you very much, I will.
