Jacob Tremblay's character had a rather unexpected nickname during the making of Wildwood... CUPCAKE!

We sat down with Jacob Tremblay (Curtis) and Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Prue) for a fun chat about LAIKA's incredible new stop-motion adventure, Wildwood!

The pair reveal if they'd brave a forest full of crows to rescue a family member, whether they'd rather take each other or their phones into the wilderness, and their biggest forest survival weaknesses!

Plus, Jacob reflects on the film's extraordinary journey to the screen, the emotional impact of hearing real baby sounds in the movie, and whether they managed to take home any miniature Wildwood souvenirs!

Wildwood is directed by Travis Knight and based on the bestselling novel by Colin Meloy.

00:00Wait, what?
00:01Yeah, when we visited the studio, everyone was calling me Cupcake.
00:04So, can I just begin this by saying,
00:06all I can sing all morning is,
00:07hey, I heard you were a wild word.
00:11Oh, wow.
00:12Why isn't that in the movie?
00:14It should be.
00:14But I did hear that in the movie,
00:16all those baby sounds are real, right?
00:18Yes, Travis's baby.
00:20Travis's baby at the time, yeah.
00:20I've got a little baby, and I left him crying.
00:23So imagine me sitting in a cold cinema watching this.
00:25No, it's emotional.
00:27Baby sounds are emotional.
00:29I don't have a baby,
00:30and I see babies in the airport crying,
00:33and I'm literally like, oh, my God.
00:35But you were babies when you were involved in this.
00:38I mean, can you believe how long ago that feels?
00:40Jacob was four.
00:41I was four years old.
00:47Jacob's baby sounds.
00:48Not only that, but I was four when they started making this movie,
00:52like, 16 years ago.
00:53Not when I recorded, but, like, you're not wrong.
00:56I was four when you started.
00:57Jacob was like, I'm so old.
00:59Yeah.
01:00And was your name Cupcake on set?
01:02Yeah, because, I don't know,
01:03that was, like, the nickname they gave to him because Curtis...
01:07Wait, what?
01:08Yeah, when we visited the studio,
01:10everyone was calling me Cupcake.
01:12They call you Cupcake?
01:12No, no, no.
01:12Not me.
01:13They weren't calling me Cupcake.
01:16They were calling the puppet Curtis Cupcake.
01:18Oh, where did you get this information?
01:21Sure, I'll take that.
01:21With pals.
01:22Yeah, no way back.
01:23You didn't even tell me that, Cupcake.
01:24Yeah, she started it.
01:26She started calling it.
01:27Oh, you started it?
01:28No, no, no.
01:28Wait, tell me the truth, somebody.
01:30I want to be called Cupcake.
01:31That's a cute little nickname.
01:33What are we going to call you, babe?
01:34I'm going to start calling you that.
01:35Yeah.
01:37Please don't.
01:38Oh, Cupcake over here.
01:40But if someone in your family or one of your loved ones
01:42was taken by crows, are you going after it
01:44or are you leaving the police to it?
01:45Depends on who it is, you know?
01:47I think if you get taken by crows,
01:49I'm like, that's meant to be.
01:50Oh, I'll let you do anything.
01:51Yeah, what are you going to do about that?
01:52It's like if somebody gets struck by lightning.
01:54What are you going to do about that?
01:55That was clearly...
01:56Have you, after seeing this film,
01:58did you look at crows differently?
02:00Oh, crows are, I mean, have always been kind of creepy.
02:04They're really clever.
02:05They're really clever and there's something very mystical about them
02:08that, yeah, I mean, you always, yeah.
02:14There's something, like, there's so many crows where I live,
02:17so I'm just so used to seeing them
02:18and I know what it's like to just see a huge flock of crows in the sky.
02:22It's not great.
02:22And it's like, it's like kind of unsettling
02:24and it's, but it's very magical too, yeah.
02:26There you go, looking for babies in the sky.
02:29And what about if you were going into a forest
02:31and you could either take each other or a phone?
02:34What are you choosing?
02:35I'm choosing...
02:36I'm taking Cupcake.
02:36Yeah.
02:38What kind of cupcake is you, though?
02:39That's the question.
02:41Red Velvet?
02:42Yeah.
02:44I mean, I'm not supposed to answer it myself.
02:45Yeah, that's for me.
02:46You're never, ever going to lose that name now.
02:48I'm really sorry.
02:50Cupcake or Red Velvet?
02:53Sounds like an alter ego, Red Velvet, doesn't it?
02:56So you're taking each other.
02:57That's really, really sweet.
02:58Did you...
02:58No, I'm taking my phone.
03:00Yeah, you're going.
03:01Right, okay.
03:01That's a good option.
03:02What about being scared of things then?
03:04Are you frightened of anything?
03:05Because I am absolutely ill with fear over spiders.
03:08So I couldn't go into a forest.
03:10So we were just talking earlier.
03:11Someone asked us what our greatest weakness in the forest would be.
03:14And I said spiders.
03:16Because I live in New York City and I can deal with cockroaches and rats and, like, things...
03:21Like, things that I probably should be more fearful of don't scare me that much.
03:26But spiders, even, like, the little nice ones, I just...
03:29I become a small baby.
03:32But what is it about not seeing spiders, like, in hotel rooms?
03:34You don't see them on tubes.
03:35You don't see them on pavements, do you?
03:37Where are they?
03:38Where are they?
03:40Wait, you don't have them here?
03:41We do, yeah, but...
03:42I'm moving.
03:43We do have them, but you know what I mean?
03:45You never see one on the high street anywhere, do you?
03:47That's true.
03:47You're not wrong.
03:49They're everywhere.
03:49What's the high street?
03:50In, like, the Pacific Northwest.
03:51Um, the street that we walk down mostly in the UK is the high street.
03:54Okay, they don't have them.
03:56It's because they're better at hiding here, I think.
04:00That's almost worse.
04:01That means they're even closer.
04:02Are you frightened of anything?
04:03You got conniving spiders here.
04:05Um, you know what?
04:06Not really, but stonefish are the one thing where, like, that's my worst nightmare.
04:11What is that laid down that you can't see?
04:13The ones that laid down you can't see and they have, like, sharp spikes and it's, like, the most venomous
04:16thing.
04:17And really painful.
04:19See, that scares me more than sharks.
04:20That scares me more than anything, stepping on a stonefish is my worst nightmare.
04:24I think that's a more valid fear than spiders.
04:26Spiders are just, like, creepy aesthetically, but what are they going to do to you?
04:29And I just want to ask you, do you get to keep any little characters or anything?
04:32Do you nick a little one from Lycan?
04:35Nothing.
04:35Not a thing.
04:36Can someone get a figure for these guys?
04:38That's what I'm saying.
04:39Yeah.
04:39But you could buy him a little jelly cat cupcake, couldn't you?
04:42I so could.
04:43I love jelly cats.
04:46I love you guys.
04:47Thank you very much and thank you.
04:48It's great to see you, little cupcakes.
04:50See you later.
04:50Wait, I don't understand.
04:51Where did that come from?
