00:00In order to avoid the enormous damage and risk that would come with strikes ahead of Christmas,
00:07we've been talking to the BMA to make them an offer that would deal with what I think are
00:14legitimate concerns that doctors have about the lack of training places to apply to.
00:20So we're announcing that we will bring forward emergency legislation that will mean that UK
00:27doctors get first priority on those training places. And we're also proposing to increase the
00:34number of specialty training places that we'd offered from an extra 1,000 to an extra 4,000,
00:42meaning that the competition for training places will go from around four doctors for every one
00:49training place to less than two to one, which I think any one of us would appreciate in terms of
00:54applying for any sort of job or training place is a good offer.
