00:00He hunts on horseback.
00:02There is a lot of colts this year.
00:04They need to be trained.
00:06Watch out!
00:08I've got an old boat.
00:10I really want to put it back on the water.
00:12Oh, this is no good.
00:14Rotten.
00:16The hardest part of building
00:18is figuring out how you're gonna do it.
00:20I have an idea.
00:22Duct tape.
00:24I've spent a lot of time alone,
00:26and all that kind of changed now.
00:28Wow, Kelly.
00:30You crushed this.
00:32Right now, the rivers
00:34can be pretty tricky.
00:36Come on, preacher. Don't let me down.
00:38This boat,
00:40I've got to
00:42flip it over.
00:44Ah!
00:46I love horses.
01:00They make this lifestyle even more special.
01:04They're part of the adventure,
01:06and they're part of the story.
01:08Hey, boys.
01:10I'm looking for horses.
01:12We have about 10 horses around here.
01:16Right now, we're in a hunting camp,
01:18just at the Yukon border.
01:20It's soon the beginning
01:22of the hunting season.
01:24They're part of the adventure,
01:26and they're part of the story.
01:28They're part of the adventure,
01:30and they're part of the story.
01:32Hey, boys.
01:34I'm looking for horses.
01:36We have about 10 horses around here.
01:38Right now, we're in a hunting camp,
01:40just at the Yukon border.
01:44It's soon the beginning of the hunting season.
01:46So we are rounding up the horses,
01:48and slowly get ready to head out in the bush.
01:52These horses live full-time outside.
01:56It's a huge area, so they can wander pretty far,
01:58but they stick around,
02:00because they know we got some grains for them.
02:02We chuck some bells on them,
02:04so it's easier to find them.
02:06They're over there right now.
02:08I think I can hear one.
02:10Hey, boys.
02:16Hey, bud.
02:22Alex!
02:24One, two, three, four.
02:26Who's there?
02:27I think we've got everyone.
02:28And that should be good for now.
02:32In the summer, Alex and I are hunting guides,
02:36roaming in the mountains on horseback
02:38for sheep, moose, caribou, goats.
02:41It's a very demanding job,
02:43but it's more a passion than a job.
02:49Watch out!
02:51They're just picking up the little guy.
02:53He's one of the young ones we've got to work on.
02:55There is a lot of colts this year.
02:58They need to be trained before we head out on the trail.
03:03Otherwise, it's just a big wreck.
03:05They're going to be spooked by any tree they touch
03:08or any bombed by another horse.
03:11So it's really important that they figure it out
03:15before we head out so it's safer.
03:17Maverick is one of the colts we're training this year.
03:27Pretty calm, even with this wind.
03:29It's his first year being in the bush,
03:31and he has never been packed or ridden before.
03:36He's a pretty calm horse.
03:39But I think we can push it a little harder in here
03:43to see what he's scared of.
03:44Maverick was desensitizing the horse with the flag
03:50because we want to break the flight instinct.
03:54We're just trying to teach the horse to deal with anything that scares it
03:59and not to react to it too much and run away.
04:01It's pretty good, though.
04:04It's going to be pretty chill, I think.
04:06Yeah.
04:10We're going to start putting a saddle on them and boxes.
04:13For most of the colts, it's a pretty big step to get something on their back.
04:17If he has any buck in him, then maybe now that he shows it.
04:23I'm scared.
04:25On the trail, we got our entire life in the boxes.
04:28If a horse starts bucking and we lose a pad box in the river
04:34or stuff like that, it would be pretty bad.
04:36He's making it look too easy.
04:38He's just like that to be showing off.
04:43Maverick did super good.
04:45Very calm, didn't react for nothing.
04:48Not how it goes every time.
04:52He's ready to go to work.
04:54Yeah.
04:55It doesn't mean nothing will happen.
04:56Like, it goes wrong all the time with horses in the bush.
05:00But at least they have a little bit of a training before we go.
05:05You're ready to hit the trail?
05:06When I look around this place, I got a whole lot of big dreams for it.
05:22Some gardens, animals, kids.
05:25That's the dream right there.
05:35I've spent a lot of time alone.
05:38One more scrunchin', Ronnie?
05:40Just me and Ronnie.
05:42And all that kind of change now.
05:45Yeah, my son.
05:46We've got to share our bacon, we've got to share our scrunchins now.
05:50I'm pretty scared to pay to have a woman here.
05:53She's worried it.
06:01Some big-looking wood, girl.
06:03Yes, they are pretty big.
06:05Her name is Kelly.
06:06And yeah, she's a sweetheart from Virginia.
06:12Of all places to find a girl, I found her shearing alpaca.
06:16She worked on this farm as like a rental hand a couple days a week, not far from her family's home.
06:24We kind of worked across from each other with a screaming alpaca in between us for two days.
06:29One thing led to another and here she is, we're in love.
06:34I think it makes sense to start that blacksmith forge spring in the air, not too hot, not too cold.
06:38Yeah.
06:39You need that?
06:40Yeah.
06:41Drive it in there, girl.
06:43We got work to do.
06:48I want to build a blacksmith forge for Kelly simply because she wants me to.
06:52That girl would ask me to build her set of train tracks going to the moon and I'd start working on it tomorrow.
06:56Heading down to Cape Roger, lots of big logs down there, the sawmills down there, cut a few logs for the misses.
07:05Really, I'm not building Kelly a blacksmith forge, I'm just building Kelly the structure to hold the forge.
07:11She'll make her own forge.
07:14There's lots of stuff that washes up on these beaches, but metal is sure hard to find.
07:17To give her her own workspace like that, that she can use all summer and enjoy, I really want to do this for her and I think it's going to be great long term.
07:28Cape Roger Harbour, baby.
07:29Being able to blacksmith our own tools and stuff out here, it goes beyond just not having to go to the store.
07:43That's part of the lifestyle out here, to be able to make your own stuff.
07:46Look at that. The old girl is still here, right where I left her. God love her.
07:57Definitely got a whole lot more rusty.
08:01Well, that also works.
08:05One thing left to do now, boy.
08:07I got a sweet little girl at home waiting for some boards.
08:11So this is an old water tank and my plan for this is to cut right here along these lines, make a door and a top hatch.
08:23That way I can load coal in.
08:31Kelly's Delphine girl is not afraid of hard work. She loves it.
08:37Oh my gosh.
08:38Well, don't want to breathe that in, but this will be the forge.
08:49She's one of those girls, she'll always surprise them and she can do it all.
08:52She really is a unique bird and I hope she stays.
08:55Got to wear that air protection.
08:56I'll be able to hear them little feet run through that saltpacks someday.
09:09I think spending all those years alone and all that time isolated in the bush by myself really made me realize how much I wanted someone to share all this with.
09:29Oh yeah, baby.
09:30That's a piece of art right there.
09:31If you asked me five years ago about a partner, I wanted one.
09:32But I wasn't sure.
09:33That's one, now we need three more.
09:34And now, I have no doubts.
09:35I'm ready and I want that.
09:36To do an adventure is, it's a way to overcome.
09:37That's a piece of art right there.
09:38That's a piece of art right there.
09:39If you asked me five years ago about a partner, I wanted one.
09:40But I wasn't sure.
09:41That's one, now we need three more.
09:43And now, I have no doubts.
09:44I'm ready and I want that.
09:50To do an adventure is, it's a way to overcome your fear, to be an explorer and just follow your intuition mostly.
10:12Man, I've got an old boat that I made myself, I built myself.
10:22It's been in the woods lying there for 10 years.
10:27Okay.
10:29I really want to put it back on the water.
10:33That's pretty good actually.
10:45Very dry.
10:46Very dry.
10:47So glad.
10:48And surprised.
10:50Very surprised.
10:52But still, there is crack here that I will need to fix.
10:55You know, it brings back a lot of memories because when I finished to build this boat, this was light round.
11:05I sailed for a month on the St. Runes River with it.
11:09Being on the water with this boat, it just brings, you know, a lot of joys.
11:14But at the same time, it got very scary.
11:19It's very difficult to control when the wind takes the boat and I take the control of this boat and it can be dangerous.
11:26There was a leak, there was a storm.
11:28And one time I remember I almost died.
11:31I got scared.
11:33Very, very scared.
11:34But I fought.
11:35I fought very well.
11:36And you know what?
11:37I'm ready for round two.
11:39Oh.
11:40Oh.
11:41Oh, man.
11:42No.
11:43There is water underneath.
11:48There is water here.
11:51This is no good.
11:52Oh, man.
11:53And it's all moldy, you know.
11:57Kind of mushroom smell like rotten.
12:02Well, okay.
12:03That doesn't look too good.
12:05I know there is a lot of work to restore it.
12:10But, well, I believe in miracles.
12:13So, we'll see if it will happen.
12:15When you're out here, there's always a million things to do in a day.
12:36So, we're trying to be efficient being out in the woods.
12:49Are you thinking of running the spout from the cabin or from the structure?
12:53From the cabin.
12:54We'll have more water and then we can collect it.
12:58Yeah, yeah, you're right.
13:01The project right now is to have a place to take a shower and have hot water on demand.
13:08If this project works out, it's going to make the difference between me having to get wood, making a fire, melting some snow, boiling some water, and then washing with that water.
13:18That's an eight-hour job versus now it's going to be a two-minute job.
13:25I think it's a really rare thing to have.
13:28But this is going to be like something that will use it forever.
13:33When I do something, I like to see progression right away.
13:44So, this is a really fun little project.
13:46This is nothing compared to what building the cabin was.
13:53Now that we have...
13:55Some skills, eh?
13:57Experience?
13:58Yeah.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Yeah.
14:01All right.
14:02So, what's next?
14:03Just the plywood on top?
14:04Yeah.
14:05We just have to dig it out.
14:07That's all.
14:08That's all.
14:09Just five feet of snow.
14:12I hope it's in there.
14:14Do you know it's in there?
14:15Are you sure?
14:16Nope.
14:17We're going to find out now.
14:19A lot of our lumber is under all that snow over there.
14:23It's been there since we made the cabin.
14:26It got left behind.
14:27Yeah.
14:28See that?
14:29Do you hear that?
14:30Yes.
14:31Whoa!
14:32All right.
14:33Okay, cool.
14:34That's actually a really big shower.
14:37I know that there's a certain description of what off-grid living is or what living on the
14:50land can mean to some people, but we're really not trying to fit those descriptions.
14:55We know what we need at the end of the day and there's nothing wrong with that.
15:00I think maybe what we need to do now is figure out how we're going to do the walls and we'll
15:07tackle this tomorrow.
15:08Horses and dogs are very different animals to work with.
15:25But at the end, it's the same kind of bond you have with them.
15:31Okay, boys.
15:32You have to take care of them, make sure they're happy, make sure they're well.
15:38Because without them, we wouldn't be able to do the things we do.
15:53So they're trimming the first horse.
15:57We have to trim and trim everybody before we head to the mountains.
16:02We can go up to 1,500 kilometers per season, so it's a lot of work for the horses and for
16:07us, so it's important that they have good feet.
16:10They're just like fingernails.
16:13They just keep growing all year long.
16:15Physically, a horse manicure.
16:19It's good that he gets shoes on because he has a crack in the front foot there.
16:29So the shoe just holds it together a little bit better.
16:33It looks really good.
16:34It'll come nice and flat.
16:36That looks good.
16:38Look at pretty every.
16:45Every horse is a different size.
16:49Then you need to work the shoe so it fits perfectly.
16:54This one needs to be opened a little bit.
17:04Come on, you stomach.
17:08It's a pretty good workout on the body.
17:10Here.
17:13Those horses are big and sometimes they lean on you and doesn't want to give you the feet.
17:17But yeah, you have to get it done before we head out there.
17:23If it's good.
17:24You want the hammer and the nails?
17:26Yeah.
17:32If you head in the mountains and you have a horse that goes lame, it's a pretty big deal.
17:36So you want to make sure they have good feet before we head out there.
17:39Almost done, buddy.
17:45He's pretty good.
17:47Good boy.
17:52It's a lot of work preparing everything for the season and it's even more work when we get in the mountains.
17:58Good boy.
17:59Good boy.
18:02It looks great.
18:04It's time to start trailing some of these horses into the mountains.
18:08Really start tomorrow.
18:10.
18:17Living in a place like this, you can't just always get up and go to the store for supplies.
18:27So having something like a blacksmith forge, that gives you a lot of power.
18:29that gives you a lot of power.
18:31You know, if something breaks down as a metal thing,
18:33Kelly will fix to repair it.
18:37Between her skills, the metal,
18:39and myself with the wood and the chainsaw,
18:41we really are putting some serious distance between us
18:44and the rest of civilization.
18:51Yeah, right here.
18:53This is it.
18:54This is the blacksmith forge.
18:59The hardest part here is going to be
19:00to get this thing actually square.
19:03Such a small footprint building with such a high roof,
19:07it's really obvious it was not square.
19:09That's our brace.
19:16A little hurt for now.
19:18Don't ask me where my hammer is.
19:20Don't know.
19:21Little bush hammers out.
19:23We'll make the building square off of this.
19:25So, the skull shell will be our marker.
19:29Oh!
19:3368, sir.
19:36This really is always like a big LEGO set.
19:39Just pick your shape and go.
19:42Soft plus sniff, but there's not enough notice.
19:46One inch out.
19:47I mean, one inch is basically bang on.
19:52Kelly don't care.
19:53She probably thinks that's charming.
20:00So I learned how to weld an agriculture mechanics class in high school.
20:10And after that, I haven't done much welding at all.
20:13So my experience is not the greatest, but I think I can make it work.
20:19Sheesh.
20:20Yeah, those are some real rough-looking beads.
20:26I gotta say, those are pretty, pretty ugly.
20:30Well, you can't do it right every time, I suppose.
20:33This is an art.
20:34Welding is definitely an art.
20:39That is actually a lot better than the last one.
20:47There we go.
20:48There's my door.
20:50Sure is hillbilly, but that's how we do it around here.
20:55Oh, that's great.
20:55You know, I've been working so hard on my homestead, on my land, on my log cabin.
21:10It's time now to restore my boat and just to live an adventure.
21:14The bottom is done.
21:22The bottom is done.
21:23The edges also is done.
21:26It looks pretty in shape.
21:29Now, I've got to flip it over.
21:32This boat weighs about 500 pounds, something like that, so it's very heavy.
21:40I'm thinking about making a tripod, a huge tripod, so I'll be able to move around with the boat.
21:46All right, so this is going to be the biggest tripod I have ever done in my life.
21:57This is very heavy.
22:01It's like very.
22:03Okay.
22:04Just going to put one lake here.
22:09Another lake goes right here.
22:12Me, man.
22:24Okay.
22:29Okay.
22:32I have to find another way to do it.
22:33When I push myself here on my land, it's very, very difficult to stop because I really want to get all the way to the end.
22:51Okay.
22:55Woo!
22:57This is a, oh, man.
22:58It's huge.
23:00This is going to be high.
23:03Now, the next step would be for the boat to flip over.
23:09Okay.
23:12Oh, man.
23:15Oh!
23:17Oh!
23:18All right!
23:21So now, I'm just going to lift it up.
23:24Slowly.
23:25The worst case scenario is that the tripod fall over me and, you know, can kill me.
23:33That's a challenge.
23:36I'm kind of nervous about it.
23:39But it needs to be done.
23:41Look at that.
23:42It's working good.
23:45Okay.
23:49Woo!
23:49This is the trickiest part now, because it needs to be flipped.
24:03I hear it cracking.
24:08We've got to be very careful here.
24:10Thanks for having a shower at the cabin is obviously not something that you think about doing as your first step on the land.
24:33and you know that it's because you've taken care of the other necessities
24:39your cabin roof over your head
24:42so i think we're at a good point
24:46that looks really good
24:50yeah
24:50just have to figure out how to hammer it in
25:03i have an idea
25:04that tape
25:06yes
25:07no um screws from underneath but going in an angle
25:13oh yeah like here
25:15yeah
25:16yeah that'll work
25:17we don't build this with plans or anything
25:24all we wanted was eight by four with a slanted roof and then we're just figuring it out as we go
25:30this is an old shower base that gilbert's cousin gave to us
25:39it's in great shape all i have to do is wash it
25:42ever since moving in the north i've noticed that anything you have you got to hold on to
25:52it because you will need it one day
25:53if it's not broken it's still good to go
25:56there you go
26:02once i have water going i can scrub it more but
26:05it's good for now
26:07what's next
26:09just the plywood
26:10yeah
26:11i think he's enjoying the sun
26:14are you good
26:19all right
26:24looks pretty good
26:27with all the water coming down i was thinking maybe we should set up our
26:40yeah good idea
26:41yeah
26:42it's a collapsible rain barrel
26:50because we can't ship up an actual rain barrel
26:54it doesn't sit in cargo
26:56yeah
26:58there you go
26:59the legs are all done
27:07let's see
27:07look at that
27:09yeah it's pretty big
27:11we're gonna leave this overnight
27:13okay
27:14and then tomorrow we can have some water to
27:18try out our new system
27:20yeah
27:23good start
27:24roaming the mountains
27:37for a month
27:38it's a pretty free lifestyle
27:41and we have everything we need
27:43we're taking about eight horses with us today
27:46we're excited to hit the trail
27:48right now hunting season is not open yet
28:01but these horses haven't worked since last fall
28:04and we have a bunch of colts
28:06hi bud
28:07i know
28:09i know
28:10so that's why we're
28:14trailing in pretty early
28:16so we can get them into shape
28:18good boy maverick
28:20how easy
28:24so far
28:26nothing
28:26too bad
28:27he gets a light pack
28:31i know
28:33i know
28:34when they're young
28:36you don't want to overwork them
28:37but it's good for them to come along
28:39to be
28:39part of the team already
28:41and
28:41to learn
28:42from the older horses
28:43just get used to everything
28:46this first compact
28:49so go easy
28:49oh bud
28:53oh
28:55good boy
29:00you ready alex
29:11yeah
29:12it's super exciting
29:17first time out for the year
29:19so it's pretty much what we look forward to all winter
29:21we travel through a very beautiful country
29:30i feel very lucky to be able to experience this and live this way
29:36it's pretty special
29:39looks pretty deep here
29:45you want to try over there
29:47yeah i can try right here
29:49come on preacher don't let me down
29:54horses are good swimmers but if you can avoid swimming them it's it's safer
30:02they can get swept away pretty easily with fast current
30:07and as soon as they have their head on the water they can drown because they can't really
30:12cough the water out like we can
30:14it's pretty murky in here he doesn't really want to go
30:18doesn't like the spot
30:23i know
30:25there you go
30:26buddy one more time
30:28sometimes there's holes in the bottom of the river and they can lose their footing and get swept away
30:38because they're all tied up together
30:40if one horse goes it's the whole string that goes pretty much
30:44okay
30:45come on
30:52maverick has never crossed the river before so we'll see how he reacts around water
30:57yes yes come on
31:09oh boy
31:12there we go
31:19there you go
31:20good boy come on
31:23damn it

31:53i'll just tie him up
31:56extra portion grain for you tonight
32:03we'll have to repack him too it looks like he slipped his boxes back a little bit
32:08yeah it's always scary when they fall over like this especially in the water but i think it's good
32:15we have had so many episodes like this and wrecks like this that we know what to do
32:22it's all good
32:24it's all good
32:25at this first water crossing he did pretty good
32:29even with his pack he didn't clinch much
32:35it's never an easy ride
32:36especially for the first trail
32:38that's part of traveling with horses and uh anything can happen on the trail
32:43on the road again
32:50have enough time just be alone with your thoughts and be alone nature i mean it's a blessing
32:57look at this rain girl
33:14but we're not built to be alone
33:18wow kelly you crushed this

34:08saved months before we come up there now no he twisted off oh there you go I mean that's what

36:09freedom baby that's what's all about out here there we go look at that we did it making this your own little
36:14bubble your own little world that's a dream
36:21living and thriving off the land it doesn't always mean that you have to be uncomfortable or in a harsh environment
36:35whatever gets you on the land keeps you on the land as long as it works for you then why not
36:45well pretty soon we won't be able to walk through the shower anymore
37:01are you flush on the side yeah it's flush this way
37:07oh there you go i'll come save you
37:12this side no i think we should try right away with the system all right
37:24i did a lot of research and then found this machine that has the pump it has the heater
37:31is it levels yeah this is leveled looks good
37:35we're going to be using propane to heat the system to deliver hot water so hopefully it works
37:45we've never had this before i've never tried it before
37:48how do you get this to connect i don't know i don't know
37:55okay i think i think i got it i guess once we have water running through we'll see
38:03what works and what doesn't
38:06you're ready to

39:33this is great it's definitely a luxury that i'm not disappointed to have and i'm not embarrassed
39:40to have this luxury
39:43i always look at how can i make this better for my family
39:47and i think it's a big box that i just checked off because we're now able to spend less time trying to get hot water and more time on the land
40:02being the woods you always need to be aware of your surrounding
40:17because it's a dangerous place
40:20so let's try to flip it

41:41and after
41:41to repair it
