00:00Hi, this is Jimmy Fallon and you're watching In Studio with The Hollywood Reporter.
00:07Welcome to LA.
00:08Thank you, please.
00:09This is so exciting.
00:10I'm so excited. Thanks for having me. I love your double breasts.
00:13You look great.
00:14I think you're dressed up for you.
00:15Yeah, I appreciate it.
00:16You look great as well.
00:18And I always, whenever I look at you, I just think New York.
00:20Good.
00:21But what people might not remember is that you used to live in LA back in the day.
00:25So do you like coming back here?
00:27Do you have any favorite places?
00:29Do you like LA or are you one of those New Yorkers who's like?
00:31No, it's very sentimental just coming into LA and you go to LAX.
00:36And I remember I'd have nothing to do all day because hopefully I'd have a gig at the improv at night.
00:41When you're a comedian, you don't have a day job.
00:43And so I'd work at night.
00:46So I'd just hang around all day and just walk up and down Venice.
00:49It was a cool record shop on Venice Boulevard.
00:52And I remember going there.
00:54I remember trying to smoke a cigarette for the first time because I just wasn't cool.
00:58And it's like, I was like, I had nothing to do.
01:00So I'm like, why not?
01:01I'll try smoking.
01:02It'll be cool.
01:03And so I bought one pack of cigarettes and I put one cigarette in my mouth.
01:06And I was walking down Venice by myself on my way with a record shop.
01:10And I just kind of let it just hang there on my lip.
01:11This is so me.
01:12And like the air just dried everything out.
01:15And so I wasn't even getting smoke out of it, nothing.
01:17It was all kind of gross.
01:18And I went and pulled it out and it stuck to my lip and ripped my lip open.
01:21I was bleeding.
01:22And I go, you've got to get your life together.
01:25What are you looking for?
01:27But I have so many great memories being here in L.A.
01:30I remember going to Johnny Pastrami's, one of my favorite restaurants.
01:35There was a place called, gosh, it's off.
01:39It was on the way to Malibu.
01:41It was Patrick's Roadhouse.
01:43Oh, yeah.
01:44If I was lucky enough to save enough money, I would go have brunch there.
01:47It's writing comedy there and working on Impred.
01:51I had lots of roommates out here.
01:53I did stand-up at the Improv on Melrose.
01:56I took classes at Groundlings.
01:58I remember going to Cantor's and writing comedy there and working on Impressions here.
02:07There's so many spots that I can just drive by and be like,
02:11I remember I cried in that Carl's Jr. parking lot.
02:14I just got rejected for the 20th time.
02:17I'm like, I'm not going to make it in this business, man.
02:19It's tough.
02:20Let's talk about this current season.
02:21It's just trying to refresh my memory of all the guests you've had on.
02:24Just the season is really overwhelming.
02:26Do you have a favorite moment from this past year?
02:29It moves so fast.
02:32I mean, it's a daily grind.
02:35You do five shows a week.
02:38Right now, we're in the middle of an eight-week run.
02:40There's so many shows and so many bits that you don't even really remember.
02:43They're like, dude, you just did a bit with Ariana Grande that went viral.
02:48And I go, was that this week?
02:51They're like, yeah, that was Monday.
02:53I go, God, it feels like that was two weeks ago.
02:55But wow, it's great that it's doing well.
02:56And then you dress up as Bernie Sanders.
02:58And that thing went, they go, yeah, I do remember that kind of because I remember getting in the hair and makeup.
03:03And that was a moment that kind of all things worked.
03:07We did, I did Bernie Sanders' impression doing his version of Old Town Road.
03:14So he was rapping about going to the Old Town Hall because I think CNN was having a town hall of all the Democrats running for president.
03:21So it was like 20 Democrats.
03:23And so I'm like, I'm going to take, I'm going to talk to the people in the Old Town Hall.
03:28I'm going to tell them we don't need no wall.
03:31And he was rapping to that beat, Lil Nas X.
03:35And we shot it in sepia tone.
03:37And it kind of, it worked.
03:39It was good.
03:40In front of the audience.
03:41It was, it was fun.
03:42But it's, it's those moments, it's live.
03:45And it is New York, but it's, it's very, it has to be very fresh and topical or else, you know, you do forget it, you know, the more stuff you do.
03:54Yeah.
03:55And it seems like there is a viral moment coming off of your show all the time.
03:58I mean, you mentioned Ariana Grande.
04:00You get people to do things that they don't do elsewhere.
04:02I mean, she doesn't really do a lot of interviews, but she spent a whole hour with you.
04:05Yeah.
04:06And how do you come up with the bits that you do, especially with somebody like Ariana?
04:09I think it comes from enjoying the guests, you know, and, and, and enjoying talking to people and interviewing people.
04:17And I do, I love pop culture and I love Ariana Grande.
04:20I remember we had her, we had her on to perform.
04:23And I said, can we talk to her too?
04:25And they were like, do you want to talk to her?
04:27Hold on.
04:28He didn't really mean that.
04:29Like, you don't want to, you want to talk to Ariana Grande?
04:31I go, she's really funny.
04:32Have you seen like Sam and Cat?
04:33Right.
04:34She's great.
04:35So we were, I think we were her first talk show.
04:38And she talked and just destroyed.
04:41She was so funny and then, and charming, but then she, so talented.
04:45She did all these impressions and everyone was like, whoa, she's the real deal.
04:49And then I think, I think SNL even saw that and it's like, we got to get her to host or beyond, which is fun.
04:54I love watching people's careers grow because I've been doing this now for 10 years.
04:59So to see someone like Ariana Grande or Timothee Chalamet or even Chadwick Boseman.
05:07Yeah.
05:08Talk about his life change like that.
05:10Dude, he's Black Panther.
05:11I mean, wherever he goes, people do the Wakanda forever.
05:14He's like, I get it.
05:15I just get a coffee.
05:16Right.
05:17I just get a Starbucks.
05:18I get it.
05:19Yes, Wakanda forever.
05:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:21I mean, it's a great thing to have, but I mean, it's so interesting to see them then and see them now.
05:26It's like, it's fascinating to me.
05:27I love it.
05:28Sometimes I see bands that they're brand new and they're playing on the show and they're like, they're so cool.
05:33And you know, their hair is in front of their face.
05:34And then we're about to go on like, all right, we're on five, four.
05:37And I'll see like the lead singer and look at the drummers like, that's another show.
05:40Because I can see it from my desk where I can see them.
05:43Those are those moments you're like, yeah, they're just starting out.
05:46They're young.
05:47They're hungry.
05:48There's that energy and it's, it's rewarding.
05:50Yeah.
05:51Well then somebody else who I think had a, had a moment on your show that, that went viral
05:55and I watched personally probably 10 of those times was Cardi B.
06:00I was not prepared nor, I don't think it's, or many people are prepared for Cardi B.
06:04I don't think so.
06:05Yeah.
06:06But again, that was one of those things I've seen her in interviews and I go, wow, she's
06:10really interesting.
06:11We are so different.
06:12You know, we're two different people, but I'd love to, that's, that interests me to get
06:17in there and have that interview and see how she talks and those, and, and sound effects
06:22and things I've never heard before.
06:23Like she was going like, and I was like, okay.
06:28And I was answering back and it exploded.
06:32I mean, that was Cardi mania.
06:35Like it was one of the things we didn't even prepare for.
06:37We just thought it'd be just a fun interview.
06:39And that went just crazy all over the place.
06:42But, and people were like, oh, I think she trademarked Okur.
06:46Right.
06:47I mean, which I don't even know how to spell that.
06:48Right.
06:49How many R's are in Okur?
06:50Yeah.
06:51But she trademarked it.
06:52She should.
06:53I mean, that's her thing.
06:54Yeah.
06:55But stuff like that, I, I, I, I loved that and it was great.
06:58And then we ended up having her back and she co-hosted the show with us.
07:01You know, we kind of, the fun thing about it too, is like we try new different things every
07:07week.
07:08So whether it be someone's going to co-host the show with us or Kevin Hart is going to
07:12co-host the whole show with us or Cher, we'll do it and just see what happens.
07:17You know, it's like, you never know.
07:19You never know.
07:20It's nothing.
07:21You can plan everything.
07:22Dude, Cher was the best.
07:23I go, we're coming, we're going to come out holding hands like Sonny and Cher, like
07:27they did for the variety show.
07:28And at the end, we were going to talk about something that she was going to slap me and go
07:33snap out of it, you know, from Moonstruck.
07:35I love the scene with Nicolas Cage where he can't stop talking and you don't want to
07:39snap out of it.
07:42Great.
07:43She goes, I don't really want to slap you.
07:45I go, just, it doesn't matter.
07:47We could have fakes.
07:48She goes, I just, I like you.
07:49I don't want to be mean to you.
07:51I go, I know, but everyone understands comedy shows.
07:53She's like, well, maybe I'll slap you, but then I'll kiss you at the end and say, I love
07:56you.
07:57I go, whatever you feel like doing.
07:58Fine.
07:59It's fun.
08:00Everyone gets it.
08:01It's a joke.
08:02It's going out.
08:03The spotlight's on the curtain.
08:04I'm holding Cher's hand.
08:05I go, hey, are you going to hug me after the slap?
08:09And she goes, she leaned over and she goes, I'm going to do whatever I want.
08:12I'm Cher.
08:13And then the curtain opened.
08:15And when it came out, that was it.
08:17That's pretty great.
08:18That's pretty classic.
08:19I'm going to do whatever I want.
08:21I'm Cher.
08:22And I go, that's true.
08:23Well, it's amazing to hear you tell this story because you've had so many people on your
08:27show, big, huge stars like Cher.
08:30Is there somebody that, maybe it was her, that makes you nervous or did you ever get starstruck
08:34by anyone?
08:35Yeah.
08:36I mean, Cher makes me nervous.
08:37I'm pretty nervous before every interview.
08:40I get a little butterfly because I don't know, even people I know, like Ryan Reynolds,
08:46I go like, hey, because I want it to be a good interview.
08:49I want them to have fun.
08:50I'm really, I'm like that.
08:52I think it's, I don't know if it's an Irish Catholic thing or something, but I really want
08:56to please people.
08:57I want to make them happy.
08:58I want to make them have the best time on my show and throw a really good party.
09:03So that when they leave, they go like, dude, we've got to always do Jimmy's show.
09:06He's the best.
09:07Yeah.
09:08So I do get nervous and I do prepare for my interviews.
09:11So we had, this year we had a sketch with Bob Dylan, which I never thought would happen.
09:17Wow.
09:18And he's one of my idols.
09:19And what we did a bit where I didn't even know, we've been asking him to do stuff for
09:2310 years.
09:24He's always said no.
09:25And I heard that he likes the circus.
09:27So I pitched him this idea because the Big Apple Circus was in town.
09:30I go, maybe it's me and Bob.
09:33We go to the circus together, just two of us watch the circus.
09:36And then at the end, I stand up and I clap.
09:39And then I look down and Bob's not there.
09:41And I go, where's Bob?
09:43And then, you know, the ringmaster goes, she says, he was never here.
09:49And so it was very twilight zone.
09:51Then the camera zooms down and there's two whiskey glasses.
09:53So maybe he was here.
09:55Anyways, long shot, we pitched him.
09:57Anyways, we hear back, Bob loves it.
09:59I go, he loves it?
10:01Fantastic.
10:02They go, he doesn't really even like the circus that much, but he likes your idea.
10:05I go, he doesn't like the circus?
10:06That's the whole reason I thought of this idea.
10:08I heard a rumor that he likes it.
10:09But he's such a mysterious guy.
10:11He could not have been nicer and matched my energy.
10:15I went backstage to meet him and he was like, hey, Jimmy, I got you a present, man.
10:19Open it up.
10:20No, I'll open it.
10:21No, no, you open it.
10:22It's your present, right?
10:23Go ahead.
10:24And I was like, that's how you act?
10:25Like, this is so cool.
10:26I was like, what?
10:27So I opened it up and it was a poster of James Cagney, an original Warner Brothers
10:31to White Heat, an original movie poster.
10:33I go, James Cagney's my favorite actor.
10:35How did you know that?
10:36He goes, I had a feeling.
10:38He's just one of those magical, cool dudes.
10:40And we did like three takes.
10:42I go, I think we got it.
10:43He goes, I think we're good too.
10:44You want to do it again?
10:45He goes, it's been my pleasure, Jim.
10:47I go, I love it.
10:48He called me Jim.
10:49The whole thing was great.
10:50He was wearing like a white blazer.
10:51He kind of floated off like an angel at the end.
10:53It was like, that guy's just great.
10:55And the bit turned out beautiful.
10:56But that was just this year as well.
10:59So we get to do all these different things.
11:01That's the fun of having a variety show.
11:04Who's the next Bob Dylan?
11:06Who's somebody that you wanted to get on the show for years that you haven't been able
11:10to get yet?
11:11We came close to having the Pope on the show.
11:13Wow.
11:14I don't know how that would have went, but I think we pitched him beer pong or something.
11:19I don't know.
11:20Something made him back out last second.
11:22But we were really close to having the Pope on.
11:25I'd love to talk to the Queen.
11:27I mean, they're like my two gets for right now that I really would love to have on.
11:32Because I'm interested in both of them.
11:34I love the Queen so much.
11:36And I think we could have fun together.
11:39Well, it doesn't have to be beer pong.
11:41It could be, you know, virtual reality, beat saver, whatever.
11:44I could make it.
11:45She won't forget it, I'll tell you.
11:46She won't forget it.
11:47I don't think we would either.
11:49Also, can we talk about the Obamas?
11:51I mean, they both have been on the show.
11:53Michelle, that was one of my favorite moments from the season, seeing her surprise those
11:56people in the elevator.
11:57The elevator surprise was with Michelle Obama.
12:00They've been so great to our show.
12:02And I've done, like, probably four or five sketches with the Obamas.
12:06I've been to the White House.
12:07I did, you know, for her Let's Move campaign.
12:10I did, like, an Olympics around the White House.
12:13And, like, I was running around the West Wing in a potato sack.
12:15It was, I mean, crazy stuff.
12:17And she's just so much fun.
12:20So when she, her book came out, I'm like, let's do something really big.
12:24And we're trying to think of ideas.
12:25And I go, this is a good idea.
12:27It's called Elevator Surprise.
12:28So what happens is strangers get on the elevator at 30 Rock in NBC.
12:32And they're going to go to the top of the rock, which is a beautiful place to look at the city.
12:36And by mistake, the elevator stops on our floor, on the sixth floor.
12:41The elevator opens, and it's me and Michelle Obama, like, playing ping pong or something.
12:46And then the elevator's like, what?
12:48And as soon as someone recognizes, it goes, like, is that Michelle?
12:51The door closes.
12:53Then you hear people screaming on the way.
12:55It's like, oh, my God!
12:56We just saw Michelle Obama!
12:58Like, you know.
12:59And so, you know, or they got up and they see me.
13:02And I go, hi.
13:03And they go, oh, hi, Jimmy.
13:04And, you know, they don't really care about me.
13:05And I go, I'm just sorry.
13:07I'm waiting for somebody.
13:08Never mind.
13:09We'll take the next elevator.
13:10And as the door's closing, Michelle Obama's like, do you want to take it?
13:12And they go, wah-wah!
13:13And they're trying to press the button to stop it.
13:15And we did that, like, probably did, like, ten different bits.
13:18And she didn't want it to end.
13:19She was like, this is so much fun.
13:21What else can we do?
13:22We jump roped.
13:23We did a double dutch.
13:25We kept adding new things.
13:27And it was just so much fun.
13:29It was great.
13:30That's amazing.
13:31And I think it's such a testament to you, really, at the end of the day,
13:33because you're so positive and you bring people so much joy.
13:36But who brings you joy?
13:38Who inspires you?
13:40I think anyone who's positive and who's creating something,
13:47putting positive stuff out in the world and creating change and being happy.
13:53You know, that makes me happy.
13:55I mean, I think this year especially, one of the big things we did was we took the show to Puerto Rico.
14:01Whew, dude, that was a real emotional, that was a game changer for me.
14:07Because the people were so appreciative that we even remembered who they are.
14:12It's bizarre what's happening in Puerto Rico.
14:15And so we went down there because I was inspired.
14:18Lin-Manuel Miranda was taking Hamilton.
14:20And I go, if you could take this Broadway production, we could do one episode from Puerto Rico.
14:25And we did.
14:26And it was unbelievable how grateful they were to have us there.
14:32And people were crying, hugging me.
14:35Like, come on in.
14:36Get a drink.
14:37Or offering me food.
14:39It was just...
14:40And it was a great kind of commercial for Puerto Rico.
14:44The show, everybody, that it's open.
14:46It's open for business.
14:47It is back.
14:48It's ready.
14:49And, like, they're ready to go.
14:51And so I kind of just want to do, like, a love letter.
14:53And remind everybody that even if you don't want to give to different organizations,
14:58you can just go on vacation in Puerto Rico.
15:00That is just as good.
15:01It helps their economy.
15:03And it helps you.
15:04It's a great vacation.
15:05It is paradise.
15:06I wouldn't do the zip line if I were you.
15:08But, hey, you know, no one's perfect.
15:10But I did it for the show because you've got to make good TV, right?
15:13I hated that thing, man, so much.
15:15Oh, I couldn't wait for that thing to be over.
15:17I had the absolute worst time on that thing.
15:20And I went on with Tariq, Trotter from The Roots.
15:23So he went on with me.
15:24He loved it.
15:25He says his favorite thing ever.
15:26And I'm going on it.
15:27And you're kind of like Iron Man, Alex.
15:29You're laying forward over all these trees and you're hundreds of feet.
15:32And it's the longest in the world.
15:35The second longest.
15:36There's one in Dubai that's longer.
15:38But why?
15:39I don't know why people need this rush of energy.
15:43But whatever.
15:44I mean, aren't video games enough?
15:46I mean, what?
15:47So I'm going down this thing.
15:48And the air is going.
15:49And my jowls are flapping.
15:52And I'm like, ugh.
15:54And I finally get to the end of this thing.
15:56And this platform.
15:57And I go, great.
15:58Let's go.
15:59Good TV is wrapped up now.
16:00I want to get out of here.
16:01And the guy goes, well, we've got to take one more zipline to your car.
16:05I go, oh, no.
16:07No, no, no.
16:08I just took the zipline.
16:09That's my zipline.
16:10I'm ziplined out, man.
16:11You're Mr. Zipline.
16:12I don't do any of this stuff.
16:14He's like, I go, what are my options?
16:15He goes, there are no options.
16:17We're in the middle of the jungle, dude.
16:18You've got a zipline to your car.
16:20So I go, ah, jeez.
16:22So it's a different zipline.
16:24That's when you're sitting in like kind of a thing.
16:26Your legs are up like this.
16:28And it's like a little harness.
16:29So I go, he goes, so whatever you do, do not touch the wire.
16:34Because the wire will burn your face.
16:36I go, again, this is what people do for fun.
16:39This is a burn.
16:40I go, I'm not going to touch the wire.
16:41He goes, no, really.
16:42It'll burn through your glove, burn through your face.
16:44I go, great.
16:45I'm not touching anything, dude.
16:46Just put me on this thing and push me down.
16:48He goes, but also you have to steer.
16:50You have to steer.
16:52I go, ah, don't make me do it.
16:53I don't know.
16:54He goes, you don't want to be turning on the zipline.
16:56I go, so it's like some carabiner thing.
16:58So I go, all right.
16:59I don't know what to do.
17:00I go, so I have Tariq go first.
17:01So Tariq goes down first and goes, into the abyss.
17:07And then silence.
17:09And I'm like, oh, he's dead.
17:11I'll figure that out later.
17:13So I go, all right.
17:14So my turn to go.
17:15So I go on the thing.
17:17Immediately I start turning.
17:18I'm trying to turn back.
17:20That's kind of fighting.
17:21It's really hard.
17:22I'm like freaking out, turning.
17:24And I kind of see the platform where it's supposed to end.
17:26The end of all of it.
17:27Wire.
17:28The wire.
17:29The wire.
17:30The wire.
17:31I go, I'm not touching the wire.
17:32The wire.
17:33I go, you want me to touch the wire?
17:34What's happening?
17:35Dude, the guy's like.
17:36So I come to a complete stop 30 feet from the platform.
17:39And I start going backwards, back up the mountain.
17:42Like, what?
17:43This dude with a hard hat hops on.
17:45And he starts shimmying out on the wire over to me.
17:47And he goes, wrap your legs around me.
17:50I go, oh, gosh.
17:54So I wrap my legs around him.
17:55And then he wraps his legs around me.
17:58And it's just embarrassing.
17:59And I don't.
18:00And he kind of scissors me to safety.
18:04And that was my zipline experience.
18:07And Tariq was laughing the whole time.
18:10He didn't have any.
18:11That didn't happen to him at all.
18:12But it's just, it's my luck.
18:13And the cameras weren't rolling on that part.
18:15Which I wish they were.
18:16But I'm like, I'm kind of happy they weren't.
18:18It's just too bad.
18:19I think a lot of people.
18:20Yeah.
18:21Anyway, go to Puerto Rico.
18:22Particularly.
18:23It's a lot of fun.
18:24I think a lot of people in West Hollywood would like to see that.
18:26Now that you're here in town.
18:27Yeah.
18:29Can we talk about one other fun moment from the show?
18:31Yeah.
18:32The Maisie Williams moment.
18:34Oh, yeah.
18:35I hated that too.
18:36I hated that moment as well.
18:38I know this.
18:39I'm sorry about moments I hate.
18:41But I mean, I loved it.
18:42She's such a good actor that I hated that moment.
18:46We had Maisie Williams on the show.
18:48And it was April Fool's Day.
18:50And so we had this idea where she, by mistake, slips a spoiler to Game of Thrones.
18:55So you can just imagine how people are going to freak for that.
18:58And then at the end we'll come out and go, April Fool's.
19:01And we'll laugh.
19:02And that's good.
19:03She's such a good actor that we were joking and talking.
19:07And I go, can you give me a spoiler or something?
19:09And she goes, yeah, well, you know, I mean, I can't tell you anything.
19:13I mean, but I mean, it was sad for me because my character dies early on.
19:20And it's just as silent as it is here.
19:21And you heard somebody go like, in the audience.
19:25And she's like, and she's like, we're not live, are we?
19:30I go, no, no.
19:31What's going on?
19:32It's all good.
19:33Let's just change the subject.
19:34She's like, oh, my God.
19:36Like, really, and really put on the best acting performance.
19:40And she starts shaking.
19:41She's like, I go, let's talk about something else.
19:46So the last episode must have been emotion.
19:48She goes, I'm sorry.
19:49I'm so sorry.
19:50And she gets up, and she walks out.
19:53And the audience is like freaking out.
19:55And I'm like, not that good of an actor.
19:56So I don't do this.
19:58I'm exhausted from acting.
19:59This is the best acting I've ever done in my lifetime.
20:01Have you seen Taxi?
20:03I mean, gosh.
20:04So she leaves.
20:05I run out to the thing, and I get her.
20:07And then she pokes her head in, and she goes, April Fool's.
20:10And I was like, I'm so happy that's over with.
20:12That was the most draining thing.
20:15I couldn't even imagine how actors act.
20:18Because that was just one, that was a 10-second scene for me.
20:21It was exhausting.
20:22And God, it blew up on the internet.
20:24And I'm just happy we did it, because I'll never do it again.
20:26Well, listen.
20:27Thank you so much for being here.
20:28We've got to let you go.
20:29Enjoy Los Angeles.
20:30Show me around.
20:31Let's go.
20:32You know what?
20:33Actually, the surprise is we're going to take a zipline tomorrow.
20:35Oh, my God.
20:36And smoke a cigarette.
20:37Oh, my God.
20:38Oh, no.
20:39You're taking me back.
20:40Stay tuned for part two.
20:42Oh, my God.
20:43If there is a part two.
20:44Oh, no.
20:45The scissoring is going to be optional.
20:47But thank you, Jimmy Fallon, so much for being here.
20:50Thank you, man.
20:51Yes.
20:52And I hope this was the best interview you've ever done.
20:54This was the best interview I've ever done.
20:55Thank you for not leaving me hanging.
20:57For a second, I'm like, uh-oh.
20:58That happens to me a lot, but you didn't.
21:00And stay tuned for more news and reviews on THR.com.
21:04Then you can call us a ZMT.
21:09Yeah.
21:10Like a ZMT.
21:11Yeah.
21:12I'm like, okay.
