00:00Sunday night, December 7th, 2025, significantly hampered a lot of content creators on TikTok
00:07in Nigeria.
00:09The platform temporarily blocked all live-streaming sections between the hours of 11 p.m. and
00:155 a.m. local time.
00:17What happened?
00:18Nigerian users received an in-hub notice saying we are temporarily limiting live leads at
00:23night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe.
00:30Both hosting and viewing of any live content, local or international, were blocked during
00:36those hours.
00:37However, the restriction was automatically lifted on Monday morning, December 8th.
00:44But TikTok says it may return while the safety probe continues.
00:49What happened?
00:51Late night Nigerian live-sections have seen a sharp rise in implicit sexual content, nudity,
00:57and creators pressuring viewers for gift in exchange for lewd heart.
01:01TikTok revealed at its November 2025 West Africa Safety Summit that between April to June 2025
01:09alone, 49,512 live-sections were banned in Nigeria.
01:15Adding to that, 3.78 million videos were removed from the country.
01:21Nigeria now leads global enforcement actions for live violations.
01:25In part, late-night hours are peak ending time for thousands of Nigerian creators who rely
01:31on virtual gift.
01:33Many lost an entire night's income with zero notice.
01:37Creators and fans took to X on WhatsApp to vent, with some supporting the move for child safety,
01:44and others calling it collective punishment.
01:47TikTok stresses this is a temporary safety measure, not a permanent ban.
01:53No Nigerian regulator ordered it.
01:56It is a proactive step by the platform.
