A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan on December 8, triggering tsunami warnings and prompting evacuations for tens of thousands of residents.
Japan Meteorological Agency officials report tsunami waves up to 50cm (1.6 ft) observed at Kuji Port, Urakawa, and Mutsu-Ogawara Port. Residents in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures are urged to move to higher ground.
