Big Ten Tournament Scarlet Knights put dagger through Michigan
Transcript
00:01Chicago, both teams knew the stakes, as Michigan basketball associate coach Phil Martelli said.
00:07A win kept them on the bubble, a loss meant no NCAA tournament.
00:14By his criteria, then, the Wolverines' dream ended Thursday afternoon at the United Center.
00:21UM went 1-for-17 from the floor to start the second half as Rutgers dominated the back end
00:26of a 62-50 victory in the second round of the Big Ten tournament.
00:33After Hunter Dickinson made a three-pointer with 15-01 left,
00:38Michigan didn't make another field goal until one minute remained, another Dickinson triple.
00:45By then, a close game had become a double-digit deficit.
00:50The Scarlet Knights didn't play exceptional offense in the second half, making just 51.
00:559% of their field goals.
01:00But that was considerably more than Michigan, which saw its offensive firepower frustrated
01:06and stifled during an early exit in Chicago.
01:09Dickinson led the Wolverines with 24 points, his teammates combined for 26.
01:14Michigan vs. Rutgers, the first half as Phil Martelli promised earlier this week, the Wolverines leaned
01:24on their big man early and often.
01:31Hunter Dickinson got the scoring started with a finish in the post over Clifford Omorui
01:35and shut down the Scarlet Knights big with a block on the other end.
01:42At the first media timeout, UM led 9-2, paced by four points from Dickinson and his nice feed
01:49to Kobe Bufkin on a backdoor cut.
01:52Rutgers came out of the first timeout in a zone, and that slowed UM's hot start.
01:56But good burst from Kobe Bufkin got him to the rack for a bucket, and Dickinson finished another
02:05post-touch.
02:07Defensively, UM kept the Scarlet Knights off the glass and maintained their lead despite a
02:111-for-7 start from deep.
02:13Though Rue got closer during a stretch with backups on the court, a Dickinson in one, his
02:21strong post-defense on Omorui and a transition block kept UM ahead.
