02:00Today, we're at Firebird Raceway near Eagle, Idaho at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

02:10This drag strip opened its gates in 1968.
02:13As the only surviving quarter-mile drag strip in Idaho, Firebird Raceway remains a major racing
02:18facility for the entire Pacific Northwest.
02:23It hosts nearly 50 days of racing each season.
02:27Firebird Raceway has deep roots in the history of American racing.
02:32They continue to ensure the future of the sport by hosting one of the country's longest-running
02:36high school drag racing programs.
02:39Firebird Raceway has been nominated in the National Register of Historic Places because
02:44of its significance to the sport of drag racing.
02:48So we got locals only here.
02:50These guys are going to be racing out for $5,000.
02:53And if they beat each other up and there's one left over, they get to race a big tire
02:57street outlaw for another $5,000 for a total of $10,000.

03:04These drivers are truly some of the fastest and baddest this area has to offer.
03:10And let's not forget, the last local standing takes home $5,000, and that's a once-in-a-lifetime
03:16opportunity.
03:17So the lucky local will get a chance to race an outlaw for another $5,000, makes it a total
03:22of $10,000.
03:24The locals don't know who they're racing yet, but we do.

05:39My name's Sam Thomas from Kettle Falls, Washington, and I have a 72 C10.
05:43It's a 408 LS motor, twin turbo, intercooled, runs on E85, and it makes a lot of power.
05:50Top truck's been around for a long time, been kicking ass and taking names forever.
05:54It's got everything he needs to be on the street, mirrors, lights, turn signals, all
05:58that stuff.
05:59My dad was very passionate about cars, and that's what got me into it.
06:02My dad used to take me to drag races.
06:05He definitely opened my eyes to it.
06:07Right now, it's pretty much a bare-bones race vehicle.
06:09It is street legal.
06:10We do drive it a lot, but it'd be nice to have carpet and a nice sound system and air
06:15conditioning and make it to where my wife actually wants to ride around with me in the
06:18hot days.
06:19Definitely think I can whoop up on these guys.

14:20We put an LS engine in there with a little turbo and just had fun with it, and it's been
14:25kind of exceeding our expectations.

14:29We drive it quite a bit to the car shows and stuff like that, as you can see.

18:24But overall, the car from the windshield forward is stock.
18:28So I got my racing starts in the streets of Japan.

18:33did a little bit of street racing,
18:34but that's when I really started hitting the tracks
18:36because in the States,
18:38the cops aren't as friendly as they are in Japan.
18:41I want to show you guys that this is the car to beat.
