The College Football Playoff selection committee gave us exactly what they wanted - maximum controversy and debate. Alabama gets in at 9-3 with three losses, BYU gets left out after losing in their conference championship game, and somehow the committee screwed up the easy Notre Dame vs Miami decision before ultimately getting it right. This is why the 12-team format is perfect for sports talk but terrible for fairness, and why they'll never go to the obviously superior 8-team playoff. Let's break down all the drama, controversy, and explain why the selection process is fundamentally flawed by design.
🏆 IN THIS VIDEO:
Alabama's Controversial Selection
Should a 9-3 team make the College Football Playoff?
The case FOR Alabama - don't punish conference title game losers
The case AGAINST Alabama - three losses is too many
BYU comparison - why the inconsistency?
Miami vs Notre Dame Debate
Committee screwed up the process for weeks
Head-to-head should have been the tiebreaker from day one
Why Miami over Notre Dame is the CORRECT call
Notre Dame's losses: Miami (playoff team) and Texas A&M (playoff team)
Miami's losses: Louisville (8-4) and SMU (8-4)
The logic problem: if losing to Miami shouldn't hurt ND, why would ND go in over Miami?
Conference Championship Games - What's the Point?
Punishing teams for losing conference title games makes no sense
Miami didn't make their conference championship - why does that help them?
Are these games becoming meaningless?
Why 12 Teams is Too Many
The perfect 8-team format explained
4-5 Conference Champions (depending on Pac-12 expansion)
1-2 Group of 5 Conference Champions
2 At-Large bids
Play-in game option
Why this eliminates the Alabama problem
Why They'll NEVER Do 8 Teams
Committee wants maximum flexibility
TV matchups matter more than fairness
It's rankings, not standings - they want wiggle room
Boxing/MMA model: control the narrative and matchups
The process is flawed BY DESIGN
The Real Problem
Selection committee has too much power
Subjective rankings over objective criteria
Creating controversy = engagement = ratings
Fans deserve better

00:00it does feel like this was a tipping point for a lot of college football fans with a few different
00:04debates happening so let's try to fix it and let's try to make sense of a weird weird situation but
00:11a really fun one to talk about in the college football landscape didn't mean to do that but
00:23it worked um so college football has forever been a very fun sport to talk about and follow
00:29like i do like the passion uh the pageantry everything with college football love it 10 out
00:34of 10 no notes but this year it does feel like a lot of people have hit a tipping point with the
00:38lane kiffin situation from a couple of weeks ago where um old miss he was just like yeah deuces
00:45i'm out of here i'm not coaching a playoff game with you guys um and that whole situation and then
00:51talking about the calendar and why like he's kind of put in that situation that he needs to be uh
00:56needs to make that move and get out of there when he did um and now this the college football
01:00playoff and all the debates that are around it and i think a lot of this comes down to for me
01:07just too many teams involved in this it's a 12 team playoff and there's different caveat there's going
01:13to be an extra one next year that would have gotten notre dame in it this year which is another
01:16situation we'll talk about in a second but um 12 teams you get the highest ranking of division winner
01:23of conference winners that get to go into a few spots teams get buys there's at larges whatever
01:28i think it's too much um and i think you eliminate a lot of this conversation if you kind of trim it
01:34down a little bit two was not enough four was bordering on i think four was probably perfect
01:40um and it was the debate that i had at the time where i like to have more teams involved and more
01:45teams with an opportunity but how many years have we talked about there being eight teams that would be
01:51um qualified to win a world champ or a national championship it's just not it doesn't happen
01:57that might have 12 12 no we don't have that so to me eight is the sweet spot for me um i get like
02:06the pack 12 is still a thing they're the pack two right now so i'm not going to include them in this
02:11uh four conference champions to me like the four big ones right the the acc the big 10 uh the big 12
02:18and um the i forget which one i said off the top but whichever one of the acc and sec i didn't
02:24mention off the top of them um so the four conference champions i would have two group of
02:29five champions getting in and then two at large bids and that completely eliminates the situation
02:35like we had with alabama because now winning that conference championship game is vital um instead
02:43of what has played out so with the alabama situation i can i can really genuinely see both sides of this
02:51on the one hand having a three loss team get in does feel a little bit ridiculous and kind of getting
02:59lost in all of this is the byu situation where they were coming in a top 11 ranked team in the
03:06college football rankings that they put out every single week which is a bigger discussion but they
03:11they were according to those rankings they would have been in and then they go play in the conference
03:15championship game and they lose and now they're bumped out of the college football playoff so i can
03:23see where you get a little bit frustrated by that um if you're byu and now look like we we lost our
03:30conference championship game too why is them with three losses getting in over us with two losses
03:34i also though understand and why i have sympathy to the byu point i also understand where bama is coming
03:40from if you're going to punish alabama for losing in their conference championship game to georgia
03:46which they did um and knock them out and put miami who didn't even play in their conference
03:53championship game maybe should have weird setup that duke wins it but still um like if you're not
03:58going to put if you're going to punish alabama for losing in the conference championship and put in
04:03miami who didn't even get to their college championship i can see where they would get a little
04:07bit frustrated with that sort of a situation that's why i think my eight is perfect because
04:12now you essentially make the conference fight you don't essentially you do the conference championships
04:17are a qualifier to get into the college playoff instead of well if they lose then maybe they can
04:22still and if they win maybe the just take it all out conference champs in and just a couple at
04:29larges and that's it um so that if you have a situation like you have in the big 10 title game
04:34with indiana and ohio state then where they are obviously the top two teams in the country on
04:40resume on all of that then you still have an opportunity to put them in and it's not well hey
04:46tulane gets a spot over ohio state no no they were more deserving trust me um you still kind of
04:52budget for some of that but not for as much as well alabama with three losses they're able to get
04:58in at the end of the day i think alabama being in god i really do see both sides but i i just i
05:05don't i don't love it they've lost twice to georgia and um another couple just like questionable loss
05:13or even questionable wins sorry along the way i think if you don't want to be put in a spot to
05:19lose like that and have your season end in that conference championship game in that way then don't
05:24lose earlier on in the season be more impressive against auburn at different time or at the time
05:29where you played them in the iron bowl and everything like that i i feel like you can still
05:34take that conversation away from people it is just this year specifically because of how it all lined up
05:39you can really make a very compelling case that alabama deserves to be in and you can very easily
05:44see again where everyone thinks there's alabama and sec favoritism going on as well on the miami
05:49situation and again there's a bias here i'm a fan of the u that they are um as much
05:54as i pay attention to it they are my college football team and so thusly i am biased um towards
06:00miami and against notre dame so it is kind of funny that the um catholics versus convicts battle
06:07at the beginning of the year comes into play now and they are having this kind of discussion between
06:13the two sides this one is a bit more of the committee's doing and their screw-up than anything
06:20miami getting in over notre dame makes all the sense in the world because miami played notre dame
06:27and they beat them like that that one is a straight line one-to-one that should be obvious right like
06:33you can hear texas's debate about well like we scheduled a tough team at the beginning of the
06:39season and we lost to them and now we've lost a couple other games and now we're out of it it
06:42punishes us for scheduling these good games but if ohio state was right on that bubble
06:47texas kind of loses a bit of that argument um now i still think they could have something but still
06:51for miami and notre dame you played each other like this is to decide who the 12 best teams are
06:57to have a shot at the national championship if you lost to one of them then and they're right on the
07:02bubble then you just don't get in like that that is obvious to me so the problem though is that the
07:07fighting irish were ahead of miami in the rankings before last week's games neither team played
07:14and miami leapfrogs them into the playoff that is where you can very easily see notre dame's
07:22frustration with all of that where neither team and it's not like any of the teams that they lost
07:27to played and looked impressive or not impressive or anything like that miami's losses were to
07:32louisville and smu they weren't playing um and notre dame's was um miami and texas a&m and
07:39both of those are playoff teams so like i just i don't get where notre dame i don't get why notre
07:46dame was put ahead of miami to begin with and if we're going to do that don't let us bully you
07:50into changing it the week after when nothing's changed really so i just that one that was their
07:56own fault for just not putting in enough of the thought of that head-to-head when you made the
08:03rankings a week ago and then when you made the bracket just like ah well now we in miami should be in
08:07there anyway so it is really tough to make the case for notre dame like again they both had two
08:13losses and objectively notre dame's losses are better than miami's losses right uh because notre
08:20dame has lost to two teams that are now in the playoff the problem is if you are trying to convince
08:25me that notre dame's loss against miami is good because miami is a really good team deserving of
08:29being the playoff well we're debating against miami so you kind of lose that debate too so it was
08:34just it was entirely the process that was screwed up and then notre dame getting all boo-boo face
08:39and being like we will not play in a bowl game in this upcoming season now like that's just like get
08:44get over yourselves get over it i understand that the the rest of the college football bowls have
08:51become the nit and no one really wants to play in any of them especially these teams up at the top
08:58but you are now did not even if a bunch of your seniors weren't going to play and a bunch of your
09:04draft eligibles were going to rest you are still denying the players on your team a growth opportunity
09:10in a big spot um a unique experience of playing in a bowl game and all of these different things like
09:15i just i i feel like it is really really pouty from a notre dame team that a couple of seasons ago
09:20won a lot of national favor with being this kind of a plucky underdog team to now just get boo-boo face
09:26because the committee didn't like you um and had a weird thing with their rankings like again be upset
09:32but to just sit out bowl season now i think is really sketchy and really i just i just it rubs me
09:37the wrong way so yeah i just i don't like that but ultimately like this is the way this played out
09:44is why college football sets this up the way it does is they want the freedom to do exactly what they
09:53did my scenario of the eight teams and only two at large and all the other um spots getting earned
10:01through championships college football is set up in a way where now like the you can't just do a
10:09season and standings and everything for every team right because of how many teams there are
10:15you're not going to have 134 game round robin and figure out who the top teams are you do have to break
10:19it up into conferences but then to be able to win your conference that should be enough however
10:23because it's been set up in this way for forever with rankings and everything like that and now
10:28it's this playoff with some loose criteria here and there they have it in a way where they can pick
10:34the matchups and it allows you this freedom when you have it being a little bit loose where yeah
10:40the top ranked conference winners will be in there but we get to pick the other ones and maybe the
10:45merit doesn't always matter but we're going to make it look close enough if you get a team that is
10:49a big enough draw that's close they're going to get in nine times out of ten they want the freedom
10:57to be able to put that in they don't want to lock into conference champions only because you get a
11:01year like this where indiana's a conference champion and duke's a conference champion and all
11:06these non-power schools are winning these titles and ohio state's on the outside looking in
11:12and alabama's on the outside looking in and texas is on the outside looking in you get all these
11:16different things playing out in this way um this gives them the freedom to still put their draws in
11:22it's the same reason why boxing and mma doesn't go with a standings based format it's their own rankings
11:28and their own wins and stuff like that so that if something is close we can use the tiebreaker of
11:33well who's going to get us the more money who's going to get the bigger ratings who's going to do
11:36all of that so it is the way it is designed for reasons exactly like this so they can cherry pick
11:42alabama gets to go in over pick a team right and um they get to go with miami in a spot over maybe a
11:50more deserving team or this that or the other thing right so they don't want to lock themselves
11:56into the most fair way of putting together a tournament because then some years you don't
12:03really get to pick the superstars and that they get to do this here i'm not a big conspiracy theory
12:06guy i just think that the facts are they want to be able to at least break the tie with the sexier
12:12option going forward for them but either way college football just full of talking points um really
12:19really really fun to just kind of break everything down in the college football landscape so if you
12:24have any thoughts on that i'm sure uh some notre dame fans are pretty pissed off about things right now
12:29and a few fan bases are upset that alabama gets in let me know your thoughts in the comments below
