00:00Tragic. That's how a judge described the crash that cut short three young lives.
00:09Lachlan Anthony Stuckey was driving his friends home to the Shoalhaven area after a weekend in Canberra in July last year.
00:16He fell asleep at the wheel near Tarrago and the car hit a tree.
00:20His 18-year-old girlfriend Charlie Quinn, his best friend Aaron French who was 20,
00:25and Aaron's 21-year-old girlfriend Brooke Sawley all died at the scene.
00:29In handing down his sentence in the Goulburn District Court, Judge John Pickering said,
00:33Many people's lives changed forever on that day.
00:36The loss of such young people is clearly devastating.
00:39They had their whole lives ahead of them.
00:41Stuckey's license was suspended at the time of the crash, and he had drugs in his system.
00:46The court heard both Mr French and Ms Sawley had offered to drive home, but Stuckey had declined those offers.
00:53It wasn't as if it was the only option for the group was for him to drive, Judge Pickering said.
00:58He clearly had been up all night, he had taken MDMA, he clearly had aspects of a short amount of sleep.
01:04In handing down a prison sentence of six years and seven months, Judge Pickering acknowledged prison would be hard for him,
01:10given he'd been diagnosed with PTSD following the crash.
01:14No jail term can return a loved one.
01:16Charlie Quinn's family held a framed photo of her in court, promising to hold on to her memory.
01:22There's no winners today. Families right across the board are all hurting.
01:27As Stuckey was being handcuffed, Charlie Quinn's father yelled out across the court,
01:31You promised me you would look after her. You didn't.
01:34Stuckey hugged family members in the courtroom before he was taken away.
01:38He'll be eligible for parole in December 2029.
