00:00Number five, UConn men's basketball is all set to take on the defending national champs, the Florida Gators.
00:05That's on Tuesday night at the Garden, the first round of the Jimmy V Classic, presented by Modelo.
00:11I want to welcome back to the city, Bronx native and St. Raymond High School star, Huskies guard, Malachi Smith.
00:18Malachi, I got the fresh twist for the Garden, looking all fresh, man.
00:21How you feeling, man?
00:23I'm good. I'm feeling good, ready to play, excited to play in my hometown.
00:26I can tell by the pat down, you're ready to throw some threes up there, man.
00:30All right, let's talk about you guys playing back at Madison Square Garden.
00:35Everyone knows it's called Stores South.
00:38As a kid from the Bronx, what's it like for you to be playing back at the Garden again?
00:45Yeah, well, the first game, I was just excited just to play in my hometown.
00:49And then just to play in the Garden, which is probably the best arena in the country to play in.
00:56You know, it's just very exciting, just, you know, playing in front of my friends, family,
01:00and just the legendary history that the Garden has.
01:04So what would be your best game or memory at the Garden growing up as either a fan or a player?
01:12Yeah, this one's a no-brander for me.
01:14I was going to say Kemba Walker, you know, that cardiac step back.
01:17And that's legendary for me, just knowing he's from the Bronx as well.
01:21And, you know, the severity of that step back, getting when a jump shot was, gave me all the inspiration.
01:29Well, you had your own little step back on that four-point play earlier this year versus Illinois.
01:33So a two-part question here.
01:36Talk us through that play.
01:37And then two, whose step back was better, yours or Kemba's?
01:42I answer the first question first.
01:44So, yeah, I just seen the shot clock.
01:48You know, I don't know.
01:49I seen the sideline.
01:50My coaches told me, shoot it.
01:52And I just wanted to make sure I hit the rim.
01:56But I made it, though.
01:57So that's all that matters.
01:59And I'll say I'm humble.
02:01So I'm going to say Kemba was – I look up to Kemba, so I can't disrespect.
02:07All right.
02:07There we go, man.
02:08All right.
02:09It's going to be a rematch for you guys against Florida.
02:11You were at Dayton last year when they kind of knocked you guys out of the dance.
02:16So what's that – like talking to guys who were on the team last spring,
02:21is there a little bit of like a get-back there?
02:24And what's it going to take for you guys to pull off that first-round W?
02:28Yeah, it's definitely a get-back.
02:30You know, the intensity is still there from last year.
02:33You know, they had a chance to win it.
02:36It was a close game last year.
02:38And like I said before, the intensity is still there no matter what.
02:42I wasn't there before.
02:43So I just want to make sure, you know, we don't take any losses pretty well here.
02:47So we're going to make sure that, you know, we get the job done.
02:50All right, before I let you go, we're going to play a little game of who said it
02:54because legendary coach Jimmy V had some legendary quotes
02:57that we're always going to remember.
02:59Your coach, Coach Hurley, as you know, is a walking bar.
03:03So for who said it, I'm going to read a quote,
03:07and you tell me if it's Jimmy V or if it's Coach Hurley.
03:11First one, in every single day, in every walk of life,
03:15if ordinary people do extraordinary things, ordinary people accomplish
03:19extraordinary things, who said it, Jimmy V or Coach Hurley?
03:24I'm going to say Jimmy V.
03:25All right, you're right.
03:27You're correct.
03:28You're one for one.
03:28We got four of them, so you're one for one.
03:30You're one for one from the free throw line right now.
03:32Second one, the super soft media people that want to cancel me for being an intense coach.
03:38You're just going to stop it there?
03:40Who's that?
03:40Yeah, I already know.
03:41That's Coach Hurley.
03:41I already know.
03:42That's Coach Hurley.
03:42All right, let's move on to the next one.
03:45Maybe the people with the shovels and the dirt,
03:47maybe they were too quick to grab the shovel and throw the dirt on us.
03:51Maybe we'll see.
03:52Who said it?
03:54Jimmy V.
03:55Really?
03:57No.
03:58No, it's Dan Hurley right there, man.
04:00Coach, you never heard him with the shovel speech?
04:03He said, like, the people with shovels and dirt,
04:05they were quick to throw the dirt on them.
04:07So, you know, kind of try to bury UConn.
04:10And I forget what year that was, but it definitely went viral.
04:13And I was like, okay, Coach, with a little Wayne bar right there.
04:18Last but not least, last one, there are 84,600 seconds in a day.
04:23It's up to you to decide what to do with them.
04:27Who said it to close us off?
04:29Who said that?
04:31Hurley?
04:31Nah, that's a legendary Jimmy V.
04:35Yeah, I was about to say Jimmy V.
04:36Man, you got some Jimmy V homework before you hit another step back
04:40on Tuesday night, man.
04:42Well, I appreciate you hopping on with this.
04:44Welcome back home, man, and good luck to you guys
04:46in the Jimmy V Classic presented by Modelo.
04:49Appreciate it.
04:50Thanks for having me.
