00:00Sports Radio 610 presents Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast.
00:04We coming to 8th time. Let's get to working, man. Let's go.
00:07Great day. Great day. Oh, give me some juice, my man.
00:11Oh, yeah. Let's do it.
00:14Second and 15. She's from there. 40-yard line. Mahomes with one back.
00:17Here's the snap. Mahomes throwing over the middle.
00:21Hits Gray, and he's down at the 45-yard line of Houston.
00:24Short of a first down. Three seconds left. Two seconds left.
00:27The game is over. The Houston Texans have done it.
00:31They've come to Kansas City and defeated the Chiefs 20-10.
00:36A landmark performance for the Texans.
00:40It was our next game, and that's how we approach it.
00:44We didn't make it bigger than it needed to be.
00:46It was our next game. We needed to come out, execute, play good football.
00:49We did that. We won the third down battle.
00:51Our offense did a good job on third down, and we made stops,
00:57and we needed to make stops on defense.
00:59Oh, yeah. It was big time.
01:02In our season here last year, and kind of had that bad taste in your mouth,
01:06we were all motivated to win this game and do the right things to win the game.
01:11So, that's a blessing.
01:13But, you know, always things to clean up.
01:15And offensively, we've got to be better in the second half.
01:17But, you know, I thought, you know, we played hard.
01:20And, you know, in December, you want to get wins, you know,
01:23and that's all that really matters.
01:25Good job, Colin. Good job.
01:27Get that music going because the Texans wake up this morning inside the playoff velvet rope.
01:33And more importantly, Seth Payne.
01:35Yes.
01:36The King is dead.
01:37Oh.
01:38Oh, yeah.
01:39They're pretty much goners.
01:41The King is dead.
01:43They killed the King last night.
01:45And I know there's, as CJ alluded to, there's plenty to clean up from the second half.
01:50This morning, this is all about the Texans going into Kansas City.
01:55And this, to me, Seth, it's not just about beating the Kansas City Chiefs.
01:59It's about two things.
02:00It's about the way that they beat the Kansas City Chiefs.
02:03And it's about the fact that the Texans, in the three-game stretch that you and I had cited as this is the stretch that's going to decide the season.
02:14Week 12, week 13, week 14.
02:17And there's other stuff that went on in the league yesterday that's going to change a lot of the calculus, especially inside the division.
02:23But they went 3-0 in that three-game stretch and came out the other side, not just 8-5, but I think 8-5 with an ethos and a vibe to this team where I think Houstonians feel it.
02:41I think national media feels it.
02:43I think the rest of the AFC feels it.
02:45And especially given the way that this AFC is setting up right now, such a strange season with this defense against the other teams that I look at in the standings right now around the Texans.
02:58Hell, they've beaten a couple of them already this year.
03:01This is wide open for this team right now.
03:04It really is.
03:05I mean, a huge part of it is just simply wondering exactly how far you can go with a defense that's playing incredibly well, including a lot.
03:14Like, this is how good the defense is, Sean.
03:16That I had people at the end of the third quarter telling me that the Texans' defense was pooping the bed because they'd allowed, at that point, 10 points.
03:26Well, because the Chiefs had a nice touchdown drive in the second half.
03:30Well, meanwhile, the offense went 3-0 after 3-0 after 3-0 after 3-0 after 3-0, but then they came through with a 6-0.
03:39They punted five straight times.
03:41The offense wasn't doing anything, and the defense let up one good – everything we were worried about was, okay, Mahomes scrambling, and Mahomes with his deep shots, his random deep shots.
03:52And those are the two things that really, by and large, scared you in that game.
03:57But the defense – Sean, they had the Chiefs' skill position players so freaking scared.
04:05Terrified, terrified, just absolutely terrified.
04:10And the final Aziz Elshire interception was – it was a combination of everything.
04:15There was good pressure on Mahomes.
04:17Mahomes throws it on a bad pass behind Travis Kelsey.
04:20Travis Kelsey, as he's bobbling it, who's bearing down on him?
04:25Aziz Elshire.
04:26Right.
04:26The guy from all the scary tweets and all the angry people on the internet.
04:31The Freddy Krueger of the NFL.
04:33The guy from all the op-eds and whatnot.
04:36Oh, shame, shame on this man.
04:39Oh, and he bobbled it up.
04:42And Aziz gets the interception as Miles Bryant hits him.
04:45The Chiefs' receivers and tight ends were absolutely petrified.
04:51Yes.
04:51This defense terrifies offensive players.
04:55Yep.
04:55Just absolutely scares the bedittles out of them.
04:59I'm not even going to say bejesus.
05:01The drops – and I saw anywhere from six drops to eight drops.
05:05I guess it depends on how you categorize a drop.
05:08Some of those were contributing – there was some sketchy ball location by Mahomes.
05:13Yeah, yeah.
05:14So, however, this we know.
05:16I mean, the Chiefs had trouble catching the football last night.
05:21These were not – these were not drops in the open field that were drops of concentration
05:26because you just picked your head up and started to run without the football.
05:30The best example I can give you is Jalen Petrie turning Rasheed Rice into just a corpse.
05:37That wasn't one of the drops.
05:38I'm going somewhere with this.
05:40Him turning Rasheed Rice into a corpse on a perfectly legal hit that Creed Humphrey had
05:45to come waddling over to Jalen Petrie and say,
05:48Hey, man, you just hit my teammate really hard.
05:51Yeah, I'm like, what the hell?
05:53Hey, hey, stop playing football so hard.
05:57Stop being legal about everything.
06:01But I think that hit earlier in the game with Jalen Petrie on Rasheed Rice
06:09had something to do with Rasheed Rice dropping a fourth and four later on in the game.
06:16And he had somebody better – that was a more blatant drop,
06:18but he still had footsteps coming at him.
06:20Yeah, yeah, I think it's still in his head from earlier in the game.
06:23And so, yeah, you can get six drops, seven drops, whatever the number may be.
06:28Don't let people flash that up on a screen and just treat it like Mahomes got screwed
06:32or something like that because his receivers weren't coming through for him.
06:35He was partially to blame for some of the ball location,
06:38which you can also attribute to the Texans' pressure.
06:41And, again, just two sacks last night, but it felt like Mahomes was under pressure all night.
06:45It was a lot like last week's game with the Colts where the Texans only had one sack.
06:49But if you watch the game, you know they were affecting Daniel Jones in that game.
06:54And then within that kill zone there, I think the Texans and the –
06:59last night was the swarm mentality to the nth degree
07:02and how it affects other teams.
07:05And it was so great to see, man.
07:08Patrick Mahomes, that was the lowest scoring output in Patrick Mahomes' NFL career last week.
07:13It was the lowest in so many respects.
07:17It was the lowest passer rating he's ever had.
07:19Yep.
07:20Lowest passer rating he's ever had.
07:21Expected points per drop back, lowest he's ever had in his entire career.
07:2642.4% completion percentage.
07:29Worst of his entire career.
07:31It was a – and I'll tell you what, man.
07:34Old game management Andy Reid.
07:36Oh, God bless him.
07:38You know, he went dormant for a while.
07:40You hold the Texans to five straight punts.
07:45They had what?
07:46At that point, the Texans' offense had about 15 yards in the second half.
07:50I'll tell you exactly how much they had.
07:52They had had five drives where they ran 18 plays for 17 yards in the second half.
07:57You go for it in your own territory.
08:00On your own 31.
08:02You idiot.
08:04What a moron.
08:06I can't believe that – you got to fire him.
08:08Got to fire him.
08:13How can you have this guy as your football coach?
08:15You know what?
08:15It's funny you say that because I say that all the time for, like, really egregious errors
08:20that people are allowed to get away with in the NFL.
08:23And I'm like, no, in the real world, when you do something like that, it doesn't matter.
08:27It doesn't matter.
08:28That's like sexually harassing the boss's wife.
08:31Like, you get fired.
08:33I'm sorry.
08:33I know you're 180% of quota for the last 10 years.
08:37You're the best salesperson we've ever had.
08:39You can't grope my wife on our own 31-yard line.
08:42I'm sorry.
08:42They got to fire Andy Reid.
08:45You can't allow that, man.
08:47Sean, and if anything, look, the Texans' defense, they'd allowed – they'd seeped a little bit
08:53there in the second half.
08:54They'd shown, especially when you still have that dynamic where Mahomes can scramble for time.
08:59Mahomes was their leading rusher last night.
09:01Mahomes was the scariest guy with the ball in his hand on the field, and he'd had some
09:06success in the second half.
09:08And the best chance they had at that point really was, okay.
09:12We need Pat Mahomes to whip out another big chunk play somehow, to scramble around a
09:17run for some first downs.
09:19And you had zero threat from the offense.
09:21Zero threat.
09:22And you go ahead and you go for it.
09:25I guess by the same token, you might say, well, they thought that they could just go get it.
09:30If they didn't get it, then they would just stop them on a three and out there.
09:33Yeah.
09:33Oh, my God.
09:34There's a lot of times in the game for the Chiefs offense to still do some damage.
09:38And then Mahomes, after that point, you can make all the excuses with drops and everything
09:42you want.
09:43Mahomes was the fourth quarter.
09:44It's one of the worst – if I had watched that, if I had watched that and you somehow
09:49blurred out who the quarterback in the team jersey was and everything, if I just watched
09:54nothing but that fourth quarter, I'd say, nope, sure, Sanders is never going to make
09:59it in the NFL.
10:00No, no, this guy, what are you – I can't believe you're giving this guy an opportunity.
10:05What the hell?
10:05Oh, my God.
10:06The crazy thing about – the crazy thing about that Andy Reid decision – well, the crazy
10:10thing was just the decision itself.
10:12But it was 10-10 at the time.
10:15Right.
10:15It was 10-10.
10:16It's not like they were trailing 17-10.
10:18We got to keep this drive going.
10:20And it certainly wasn't like the Texans were moving – oh, don't want to give the football
10:23back to the Texans.
10:25Your best strategy there would have been to punt, give the ball back to the Texans, and
10:29you probably would have improved your field position on the subsequent punt back to you
10:32because it's not like Townsend punted the ball all that great last night.
10:35But to your point, Seth, in the fourth quarter, this is what the Texans did to Patrick Mahomes,
10:40who, by the way, had his full complement of weapons last night.
10:44There's no excuse.
10:45He had Xavier Werner.
10:46He had Rasheed Rice.
10:49He had Hollywood Brown out there.
10:52Travis Kelsey, the revitalized Travis Kelsey from last year, he was out there.
10:57They had Pacheco.
10:58They had Kareem Hunt.
11:00Now, the offensive line, they were missing pieces there.
11:02But as far as the skill positions and everything, they had everything they needed.
11:07These were the four chief drives in the fourth quarter of this football game, to your point.
11:12Interception, three plays, four yards.
11:15That was the Kamari Lasseter interception.
11:19Turning it over on downs.
11:21That was the series we just talked about.
11:23Four plays, nine yards.
11:26Then they had to, because they're now trailing 17-10, and the time is dwindling, they had
11:30to go for it on fourth down on their side of the 50 again.
11:34Yeah.
11:34On a fourth and four.
11:35They turn it over on downs.
11:37Four plays, six yards.
11:38Texans couldn't make them pay because they couldn't get out of the huddle in time twice.
11:43One coming out of a timeout.
11:44Oh, yeah.
11:45Our favorite.
11:45That was one of our top five most infuriating penalties.
11:49Yeah.
11:49That's right.
11:49It was number one or number two?
11:50It was the first one I said, so it was number nine.
11:52I think, yeah.
11:53It wasn't even a penalty, but it was, yeah, to avoid a penalty.
11:55Right.
11:56Right.
11:56Right.
11:56Any coming out of a timeout.
11:57But then they did have the delay of game immediately afterwards.
12:00Right.
12:00Right.
12:00They're like, oh, no.
12:01I know we called a timeout to prevent a delay of game, but by God, we're going to get a delay
12:05of game, okay?
12:06And then finally, just to close this out, interception to Aziz Alshair.
12:10Those are the fourth quarter drives for Patrick Mahomes.
12:14Can I, I texted you last night about how I had to consciously remove myself from the
12:23two-minute drill, if that's what you want to call it, at the end of the first half.
12:27So I got to consciously not think, I got to not think about that.
12:30Yeah.
12:30I have to force myself not to think about that because, my God, what?
12:34Sean, what the hell?
12:35Sean, what in the ever-living hell is going on with the Texans at the end of the first
12:39half every single week?
12:41Yeah.
12:41I don't know.
12:42I don't know.
12:42It's like they just, look, as somebody who struggles with time management myself at times,
12:48sometimes you got to clamp down on the ADHD, fellas.
12:51Yeah.
12:51You got to realize, no, there's a clock.
12:53You got to be sure that you're getting to where you're supposed to be on time.
12:58Yep.
12:58You can't spend 25 seconds trying to get guys lined up when the clock is ticking.
13:04Yeah.
13:04And then you go three and out, start the skin half.
13:06So the whole advantage you have of getting the ball to start the half that puts you, it
13:11gives you an inherent advantage in what they call the middle eight, the last four of the
13:14first half, the first four of the second half.
13:16They just, they frittered that away.
13:18That's things like that, Seth.
13:19Things like going 0-4 for the entire third quarter.
13:23And yet you go on the road and beat the Chiefs.
13:25Yeah.
13:26In the only game, and I'm going to give you another Mahomes stat here in a second.
13:30This is, this isn't the Mahomes stat I'm about to give you, but this is the only game
13:33that's, the Chiefs have lost that hasn't been a one-score game.
13:36Every, every other loss has been a one-score game this year.
13:38The Texans beat them by 10 in a game where they were completely dormant in the second
13:43half of this game.
13:43It's just that the defense was able to get them multiple opportunities on the plus side
13:47of the field.
13:48How about this one for a Mahomes stat?
13:51Mahomes, this is the first time Patrick Mahomes in his career has had a game with zero touchdown
13:57passes, multiple turnovers, and a less than 50% completion percentage.
14:02Yeah.
14:03It's never happened before.
14:04He's never had a no touchdown, two interception, you know, 15 for 31 game or something like
14:09that.
14:09You got to blow it up.
14:10You got to blow it all up.
14:12Fire, fire, read, blow it up.
14:14Yeah.
14:14Yeah.
14:14This is, and the great thing is that even fishing was just absolutely horrendous on both
14:19sides of the ball yet again.
14:20Yep.
14:21I mean, the Chiefs, Chiefs fans really can't look themselves in the mirror and still try to
14:25blame the, the officials for this.
14:27I mean, they will, I'm sure.
14:29They're not accustomed to seeing their hero without clothes in his dad bod.
14:33I guess they are actually, uh, they actually have seen his actual dad bod without clothes
14:39for a good amount of times.
14:40Yeah.
14:40But he's looking, he looks that much more dad body-ish when he has a game like that.
14:45And it was, it was, it was, those were earned drops by the Texans.
14:49There were, there were so many easy shots in the kill zone and the fun, the best part
14:56of that game, Sean, which of those two teams, again, if you didn't know who, if you didn't
15:02know the, the geographic location of those teams, which team looks like it was bothered
15:07more by the cold weather?
15:08A hundred percent, the Chiefs.
15:10Well, they had a spit that you can, you can contribute a percentage of the drops to that
15:14maybe.
15:15Who knows?
15:15The injuries, the drops, all of that.
15:18They looked like they were not ready for cold weather.
15:20Yeah.
15:21They looked like they were like they're, uh, they needed hot cocoa in the locker room.
15:25I'm glad you brought that up.
15:26Cause that, that to me, look, they beat the Chiefs.
15:28So this is going to do newsflash.
15:30This is going to be a largely very happy show today.
15:32I just want anybody who's really frustrated with the third quarter.
15:35I totally get it.
15:36I totally get it.
15:37I totally get it.
15:39But the fact that it looked like the, the issues that Texans were having on a frigid
15:45night in Kansas city had zero to do with the weather.
15:47And the reason why I'm happy about that is the way the standings are shaking out.
15:51You're going to have to go play in some cold places at some point here.
15:54Look, New England and Denver are running away with the AFC right now.
15:57So if you want to get to a Superbowl, you're going to have to play one of those two teams
16:01in January in cold weather, the Texans didn't look phased at all by it yesterday.
16:05You know, they, they looked more phased by just trying to get out of their own way against
16:09what's a pretty good defense in a hostile environment.
16:12But, um, the other, you know, the thing that bothered me last night was that I was retroactively
16:17angry at the Cowboys for, um, for winning that game, uh, or excuse me, I've heard that
16:24for losing that game because, um, if the chiefs, if the chiefs hadn't had their backs against
16:29the wall, I think you, you wouldn't, the version of Chris Jones that you've seen all
16:32year, which is more kind of like, ah, sometimes I play, sometimes I don't.
16:36Yeah.
16:37Chris, he was, he was dialed in, man.
16:38He's one of those guys that kind of like, remember Chester McLaughlin back in the day?
16:43I do.
16:43Classic.
16:44Don't poke the bear guy.
16:45Chester McLaughlin, when he chose to would absolutely destroy your world.
16:50Yeah.
16:50And Chris Jones felt like he was having one of those moments last night where he really decided
16:55to play football and, and beat the absolute snot out of the interior offensive line.
17:00That's got to be frustrating if you're a chiefs fan to see something like that.
17:03Like, Oh, tonight you're trying the entire time.
17:05He really could do it every single game if he somehow wanted to.
17:09Yeah.
17:09It's wild.
17:10And yet I don't think there's a chiefs fan out there that doesn't think he's worth the
17:13$30 million a year that he's getting because he's made such big, maybe this year.
17:17I know this year there are this year.
17:18I just mean in general, like he he's been this way forever.
17:21Remember we had, um, uh, what's his name from the Carrington?
17:25Yeah.
17:25Carrington Harrison.
17:26Carrington Harrison said just that.
17:28Wow.
17:28He got that big contract and just hasn't been the same guy really since.
17:33That's true.
17:34Um, all right.
17:34Payton Pendergast with you, uh, on a Monday we're off and running and this is a great Monday
17:39to be a Texan fan.
17:4120 to 10 finals over the Kansas city chiefs.
17:43We're going to continue.
