Question of the day, at what point last night or at some point this season
00:05
made you realize that this year was really different?
00:09
That's a great question because there have been moments even early in the year
00:13
where you're like, and then they start to make their move a little bit.
00:17
You're like, all right, so they might do this.
00:19
And then there's moments against the Bills maybe
00:21
where you see them sack Josh Allen eight times.
00:26
Because last night there was a moment when really the game was just about in,
00:31
well, the Texans had control defensively as we've talked about
00:34
and are going to talk about.
00:36
It was when Alshair got that interception against Travis Kelsey.
00:43
Travis Kelsey was scared.
00:46
He knew what was coming.
00:48
He had dropped a couple of balls for other reasons.
00:51
He went one of five, one catch on five targets in that game.
00:55
That was Travis Kelsey, and I'm not saying he's a scared player.
00:59
I'm saying he was scared in that moment.
01:01
He is a Hall of Fame tight end that absolutely has been clutched over and over again.
01:07
When things break down, when the Chiefs have faced situations like that in the past,
01:12
Kelsey mans up, bows up, figures out a way, finds some room.
01:16
Even this year?
01:17
Even this year.
01:18
Makes the catch, makes a big play.
01:21
In that moment, he was scared.
01:23
Mark, this defense scares people like that.
01:27
That's the moment when I went, it's just different, man.
01:31
Oh, and that's the back end of it.
01:32
The front end part of it that is a just as important piece of that.
01:36
Patrick Mahomes, that throw.
01:38
You look at that throw, and that throw was not in that perfect pocket.
01:41
No, to be fair, I don't think every quarterback is always putting it in that perfect pocket,
01:45
but you kind of think of Patrick Mahomes as placing the ball usually really well
01:49
for Travis Kelsey to have a better shot at it.
01:51
That one's a little bit behind him because Mahomes is not setting his feet.
01:55
He's stepping up in the pocket and throwing on the move because...
01:58
Maybe both ends of it are the moment.
01:59
Oh, that's what I'm saying.
02:00
I'm accentuating.
02:01
I'm not taking away from what you're saying.
02:03
On the other side of it, at the same time, Mahomes can't get that ball into a great place,
02:07
and Kelsey's afraid because the front end is doing their job pushing Mahomes off his spot
02:14
and making him make a throw off balance, and then Kelsey having to make a tougher play
02:18
is also worried about getting cracked on the backside by Aziz Alshair,
02:24
and ultimately all of that leads to the third turnover of the day for the Texans.
02:28
Just an absolutely incredible play, and interesting for you to note that as one of those moments.
02:34
I put up, I don't know if it's my ultimate answer, but that play that we came back into from break
02:39
where you have C.J. Stroud stepping up into the pocket and recognizing,
02:44
hey, there's a blitz coming, or maybe not, yeah, it's a blitz coming
02:46
because the linebacker, Nick Bolton, basically looked up and saw,
02:49
oh, okay, Woody Marks is blocking.
02:51
I think that I'm just going to avoid this and go and see if I can hit C.J. Stroud.
02:54
C.J. acknowledges that, sees it, gets the ball out at the right timing,
02:58
soft enough for Woody Marks to catch it, not to say that Woody Marks doesn't have good hands,
03:02
but, you know, it was a running back versus, like, firing that thing in there.
03:05
Woody Marks, booty butt naked open, walks into the end zone,
03:08
and I was like, this is a C.J. Stroud that is comfortable behind the line,
03:12
even under pressure, as you mentioned.
03:14
There's some instances where he even knew and was comfortable enough to dirt the ball
03:17
and knowing, hey, keep the ball, keep it alive, let's go back and live to fight another day.
03:21
I thought C.J. Stroud demonstrated himself really good behind the line,
03:25
even though I think the third quarter got a little dicey,
03:28
and I can give Steve Spagnuolo and the Chiefs some credit.
03:32
We'll talk more about that on that one.
03:33
I actually do think that that was part of what happened there.
03:37
But C.J. stepping into, stepping even further into himself
03:40
and looking at least in the first half, like C.J. Stroud of 2023,
03:44
the dude that we were projecting up forward, I think that changes the game a big way.
03:48
Yeah, I think the moment also was from last night,
03:52
and I was talking to Reggie about this earlier,
03:54
the car crash that happened on the field with Jalen Petrie.
03:58
Yeah, just running through the stop sign and hitting another car
04:01
right in the middle of the interception.
04:04
At that point, I'm like, oh, man, I think all of these receivers,
04:08
and then at this point, you start seeing a lot of receivers
04:10
just dropping a lot of passes, man, even Travis Kelsey,
04:14
where I'm like, man, this defense is really getting to him now, man.
04:17
Really good one from the text board here,
04:20
and I think this is a strong, in that moment you realize things are different,
04:24
that's the question, 713-572-4610.
04:27
And by the way, I know a lot of folks are going into work or at work or whatever.
04:31
Open another tab.
04:33
Open another tab or on your phone just to open that YouTube
04:35
because we're going to be talking about this all day long.
04:38
Just jump into YouTube.
04:39
I think there's people in there just chatting it up and all that stuff.
04:41
That's one of the best parts is I love seeing the conversations.
04:44
I didn't want to do this because I'm not trying to put nobody on blast,
04:47
but there was very clearly a Chiefs fan in there mixing it up.
04:49
And what a great day to be a Texans fan
04:51
when somebody opens themselves up to ridicule.
04:54
Come in there.
04:54
We ain't going to jump you.
04:55
We ain't going to jump you.
04:56
Just come in there, man.
04:58
You got a bunch of tabs open anyway.
05:00
Just open that YouTube, put in your ear pods, and have at it.
05:03
They're having a whole other conversation in there.
05:05
Yeah, and you can stay up to date on – we got a lot to cover today.
05:08
But anyway, this is a really good one in terms of what moment did you realize,
05:13
all right, this is different.
05:14
And somebody on the text board said when they won the three games with Davis Mills.
05:19
That's a great one.
05:20
That's a great one.
05:21
3-4-6 took it to another place, which I really appreciate.
05:24
It said, first and start for this Mills,
05:26
when Davis said that Daniil had walked to him and told him,
05:28
we're a good defense, we're going to get you the ball back, keep balling.
05:31
Like the level of confidence, gravitas, cojones to be like,
05:37
hey, man, you don't got to do that much.
05:40
We got it, big dog.
05:41
Just play your role.
05:42
Like, and especially from Daniil Hunter, who is the most quiet,
05:47
the most, you know, like, just do-your-job type dude to walk with me,
05:51
like, show a little bit of bravado in that moment and be like,
05:54
hey, you know we got over here, right?
05:56
You could be, dog.
05:58
We don't care who's at quarterback.
05:59
They could put a Goomba Wally back there.
06:02
And they might.
06:02
And they might.
06:03
Hey, Stover.
06:04
Just don't turn the ball over.
06:06
Hey, speaking of which, one turnover in the last four games?
06:10
Hey.
06:11
Remember what I said was their offensive identity?
06:16
Just don't screw it up.
06:17
I stand by that.
06:19
Just don't screw it up.
06:20
Last night was a great example of that.
06:21
Last night was very, it was the epitome of don't screw it up.
06:24
And for a moment there, you were wondering if they would.
06:26
Four three and outs.
06:27
Four straight three and outs in the third quarter.
06:29
And I'm just like, come on, dude.
06:31
I'll tell you another moment for me.
06:32
Okay.
06:33
It still goes down to Travis Kelsey because, like, that's Travis Kelsey.
06:37
That's Patrick Mahomes.
06:38
But if I had to pick another one, it was the Josh Allen just undressing, man.
06:43
That was one of them.
06:44
I was going to mention specifically the third and six where Josh Allen drops,
06:50
then tries to escape up the middle, and then from behind,
06:54
Oh, yeah.
06:54
And I'm like, oh, he's done for the game.
06:58
The way that he's squirming.
06:59
Now, of course, Allen is a tough mofo,
07:00
and so he ultimately makes his way back in that football game.
07:04
But for me, I am not afraid to admit that all of the, well,
07:10
this team has had Josh Allen's number.
07:11
I tend to lean more into the D'Amico Ryan school of thought that this is a new year
07:15
and you cannot assume that.
07:16
And inherently, that is a good dude, so you have to treat him accordingly.
07:20
Apparently, they say a bump all that.
07:22
We know that's Josh Allen, and we're his daddy.
07:25
And that was one of those things where I go, oh, okay, it don't matter.
07:29
It don't matter who come in here, right,
07:31
especially once this team had gotten their head screwed on straight
07:34
because obviously the Matt Stafford performance in week one was something else.
07:37
But, like, once they had their head screwed on straight as a defense,
07:41
it don't matter who.
07:42
And that was solidified once again in this game with Patrick Mahomes,
07:46
you know, not being able to, and the Kansas City Chiefs offense,
07:49
not being able to be the same boogeyman,
07:52
even that they had been in portions of this year,
07:55
but specifically not in the past.
07:57
I did appreciate someone on the text line,
07:59
and I wanted to give them their props.
08:01
They were like, since day one, I've been texting and telling y'all
08:03
that they lost a couple of games against some great teams.
08:06
All right, go ahead and talk your talk.
08:07
I ain't mad at you.
08:08
So, yes, was there another moment that came,
08:11
came up for you in your thought?
08:12
It's just more of moments.
08:15
Christian McCaffrey was a non-factor.
08:17
I mean, I know he ultimately got some yards,
08:20
a lot of them late and a lot of them cheap,
08:22
but, you know, you're talking about a guy that always catches the ball
08:26
and gets yardage, always rushes the ball and gets yardage.
08:29
It's kind of like the Josh Allen of running backs.
08:32
They just said, no, that ain't going to happen against us.
08:34
You know, the McCaffrey game, you know,
08:35
when they just basically shut them down.
08:38
From the 2-8-1, did we really play the best versions of the Ravens,
08:41
Bills, and Chiefs?
08:42
Ravens, no.
08:43
Bills, probably not.
08:44
And Chiefs, no.
08:45
However, Ravens don't feel like they'll be in the playoffs.
08:48
Bills probably will.
08:50
But, again, you demonstrated yourself very good with this defense,
08:53
and you handled them up pretty well,
08:56
whatever version of them they are right now.
08:57
And the Chiefs, again, you put them out of this place
09:00
where it does not feel like they'll make it to the playoffs.
09:02
Also, a great point made, because I don't want to forget this.
09:04
It just reminded me.
09:05
Someone said when you stopped them on fourth down.
09:07
And that is important, not just because, oh, you stopped them on fourth down.
09:11
Patrick Mahomes typically makes those plays, so on and so forth.
09:13
You know what the Chiefs have been on fourth down?
09:16
What?
09:17
The best team in the NFL this year.
09:19
21 of 26 up until this game.
09:22
And you stopped them on fourth down when they did them up.
09:24
That was stupid, though.
09:25
I think that was another testament.
09:28
That might be a moment.
09:29
You made Andy Reid panic.
09:32
You know, you made Andy Reid.
09:34
He was shook.
09:35
He knew that was his best chance and only chance to just try to do something
09:38
against this defense.
09:39
And, by the way, Figgy, 979 said Petrie did not hit another car.
09:43
He ran over a pedestrian.
09:45
Well, I didn't want to put it like that.
09:48
And he had the care and concern that would happen if you hit a pedestrian.
09:51
Because, Vicky, you were mentioning it.
09:53
Yeah, yeah.
09:54
My favorite thing about that was how hard he hit.
09:57
Was it Rasheed Rice?
09:58
That's right.
09:59
And then, you know, he was hyped.
10:01
And then immediately, I think it was the center for the Chiefs came over.
10:06
You know how they always do.
10:08
And Petrie immediately put his hands up.
10:10
Like, we good.
10:11
Nobody else.
10:12
What are you doing?
10:12
That was a clean hit.
10:14
That's what I'm saying.
10:14
No, that could have easily went the other way around with a guy in the dude's face.
10:20
But he was just like, hey, that's a clean hit, brother.
10:22
We out here playing football.
10:24
How about this one from the A32?
10:25
When Ryan's gave up defensive play calling.
10:27
That one, I'm still trying to figure that one out.
10:30
Because I haven't seen the requisite figuring out of all the other head coaching things.
10:36
However, they're getting these wins.
10:38
Matt Burke, man.
10:39
Matt Burke has been fantastic.
10:40
Matt Burke.
10:41
Matt Burke has been very good.
10:41
Yeah.
