Hollywood actor Johnny Depp made an anticipated appearance at the Tokyo Comic Con in 2025, where thousands of fans and cosplayers came together to celebrate pop culture on Sunday.
He later took the stage with Japanese voice actor Hiroaki Hirata, receiving a surprise gift, an inspired illustration of Jack Sparrow drawn by Eiichiro Oda.
"Thank you for having me. Thank you for everything. The warm welcomes, the kindness, the generosity, the support which has been there strong for a long time. I thank you all deeply, deeply, deeply," said Depp.
Tokyo Comic Con is a major international event that showcases popular culture. It features announcements of upcoming films, video games, and opportunities for fans to cosplay and meet with artists and performers.
"It's really open to many different styles, which I think is really good, like both anime comics, cartoon craft, and it's like a variety. So that also for me, I like to walk around and see what other people are doing, who's who and who's new here. And maybe I find something that really inspires me or motivates me to work harder," explained Reinald REIQ Quintero, an artist.
This year’s event included cosplay parades, an Artist Alley, ani-song concerts, Marvel and DC exhibits and booths offering exclusive merchandise.
"I personally love the Joker, and for this cosplay I imagined, 'What if I were the Joker?' That’s how I approached it. His madness… that unhinged part of him that you normally can’t show or express. By doing cosplay, I thought maybe I could release that wild, insane side within myself too," shared Maaru, a cosplayer.
The convention drew large crowds for a record celebrity lineup that included Sebastian Stan, Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen and cast members of 'Back to the Future', who marked the film’s 40th anniversary in Japan.
