00:00Straight shooter Stephen A. Smith joins the table to give his take on Hot Topics.
00:09Plus, we're kicking off 12 Days of Holidays on the View with the hottest toys kids want this season.
00:16Here come Hot Topics with Whoopi, Sarah Haynes, Joy Behar, Annie Navarro, Sunny Halston, and Alyssa Farah Griffin.
00:30Now, let's get things started.
00:32Oh, hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the show.
01:02Welcome to the show.
01:03Welcome to the show.
01:04Welcome to the show.
01:05Welcome to the show.
01:06Welcome to the show.
01:07Yeah.
01:08Woo.
01:09Yeah.
01:10So, first of all, first of all, welcome back, Alyssa.
01:18How are you feeling?
01:19How are you feeling?
01:20I'm feeling totally better, but getting sick while you're pregnant is no joke.
01:25Yeah.
01:26Everyone wash, do your whole thing.
01:27No Tylenol for you.
01:28Oh, I can't do anything.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Yeah.
01:31But I'm feeling great.
01:32I'm not contagious, and I miss you.
01:34We miss you.
01:35I'm really excited we're going to have a baby on the show.
01:37We're having a baby.
01:38I know.
01:39We're having a baby.
01:40I know.
01:41It's going to be pain.
01:42I know.
01:43You don't even have to do the worst.
01:44She's got to do it.
01:45We're having a baby.
01:46We're having a baby.
01:47We're having a baby.
01:48We're having a baby.
01:49We're having a baby.
01:50We used to have a million babies.
01:51Yeah.
01:52This one had babies.
01:53I had baby.
01:54Abby had baby.
01:55We liked that.
01:56Yeah, it's a wonderful thing.
01:57It's exciting.
01:58It's a wonderful thing.
01:59And I don't know whether y'all know this, but we walked out to Candy Cane Lane by Sia
02:02to celebrate our brand new holiday soon.
02:04Oh, it's so beautiful.
02:05Very nice.
02:06It's beautiful.
02:07You know?
02:08Yeah.
02:10You know?
02:13But because this is what we do for a living, we've got to tell you what's going on in the world.
02:17Mm-hmm.
02:19Defense Secretary.
02:20Oh.
02:21You no wonder.
02:22Pete Hegseth is already in the hot seat over strikes on an alleged narco boat.
02:29But now sources say an Inspector General report that could be released as soon as today
02:36found that he could have put troops' lives at risk back in March by using a signal chat
02:43to discuss imminent attack in Yemen.
02:46Hegseth claims that the report totally exonerates him.
02:51But Republicans, like Senator Tom Tillis, then don't seem to be buying it.
02:56Watch.
02:57No one can rationalize that as an exoneration.
03:00We know that mission information was outside of the classified setting that it was trusted
03:06to be in.
03:07And, you know, I don't, Caitlin, I don't even bring a pin into a classified briefing.
03:12I don't bring, we obviously don't have our phones, we don't have our watches.
03:15I don't even bring a pin in to make notes to remove any doubt that there is something that
03:20I could have dropped or put in the trash can that I forgot about because that's how seriously
03:25you need to take classified information.
03:27Yeah.
03:28Yeah.
03:29So, you know, so Hegseth is trying to justify that this report clearly clears his name.
03:40Nobody has read the report yet.
03:42Nobody knows what's in it.
03:43So how does he know it exonerates?
03:45Why did they, what are they, what is happening?
03:47What I'm wondering is if they forgot that in 2016 we heard all about a private server,
03:53Hillary Clinton's emails.
03:54Oh, yeah.
03:55It could have been confidential.
03:56What was in that information?
03:58And there was a lot of outrage.
04:00And, and arguably it was one of the top few reasons that people credited with I could
04:03never vote for her because she doesn't know how to handle confidential information.
04:08Then we sit here now and I'm not seeing the same outrage over literal war plans shared
04:14hours before with people like your sister and your brother.
04:19His podiatrist.
04:20And then by the way, it shows you while, why there are skiff rooms and, and there's,
04:24there are channels to do this stuff because you could accidentally, I don't know, include
04:29a reporter on it.
04:30Yeah.
04:31Which he did.
04:32So the point here is that like, I don't, it's all wrong, but like, why would you harp
04:37on how bad this was, how endangering it could be when you actually did the thing and you
04:42did endanger the troops and I'm not seeing the same outrage for something as egregious
04:47as this?
04:48Why not?
04:49Because we pick our battles.
04:50We're selective outrage.
04:51Because it's become normalized.
04:52It's not normalized.
04:53It is.
04:54It is people that were outraged before typically were on the right and they're going to apologize
04:58for Hegseth.
04:59And that's why they're not mad now.
05:01But if you're being consistent and you really cared, you should really care right now that
05:06this was shared.
05:07I also miss the buck stops with me and leadership.
05:10He is the secretary of defense.
05:12He's one of two people on the planet who can direct a US military strike on behalf of
05:16the United States.
05:17He's an incredibly powerful person.
05:18So whether it's this was signal gate, when we learned about all this, any thinking person
05:22was like, you shouldn't have done this.
05:24This could have endangered troops.
05:25At minimum, it was reckless and thank God nothing bad happened.
05:28He should have taken responsibility then.
05:30And I know you guys have been talking earlier in the week about these Venezuelan alleged drug
05:35boat interdictions that we've seen in these double tap strikes that have taken place.
05:40He now seems to be throwing under the bus Admiral Brady, who's someone I don't know well, but I
05:44worked with at the Pentagon.
05:45He is somebody who has a stellar reputation, is respected by both sides of the aisle.
05:50And I will say, we don't have all the facts.
05:52I have a hard time believing that he would have called for what amounts, I would believe,
05:57into a war crime with the information that he had.
06:00So whether he got wrong information from someone above him in directing that, it just doesn't
06:05feel like the secretary who takes, he's the one who should be taking responsibility.
06:09Instead, he's just pointing the finger, this is someone else's.
06:12He had to leave the room.
06:13Yeah.
06:14Despite taking credit for the strike on Fox News.
06:15But Trump won't do anything about it.
06:17He'll just call it a hoax and send the ice into New Orleans like he's doing.
06:20And I'm sorry, I know Bradley, I said to you.
06:22To distract from the whole thing.
06:23He's not going to get rid of him.
06:24I don't think so.
06:25I don't think he's going to get rid of him either, because it would be, you know,
06:30admitting that he put forth the wrong person, right?
06:33And he supposedly surrounds himself with the best people.
06:36But I think that Mark Kelly...
06:37But they're all, there's so many like that.
06:39They're so unqualified.
06:40Yeah, there's so many.
06:41I'm telling you, when you hire a clown, you've got a circus.
06:44And so, you know, that's what happens.
06:48So, you know, we've got a government circus.
06:51But what I will say is, Mark Kelly, who is a veteran, astronaut, member of the Armed Services Committee,
06:58he said this about the report.
07:00He said it's pretty clear he shouldn't have been using his cell phone and an insecure app, unofficial app with regards to the Department of Defense, to be sharing that kind of information.
07:11It's not too hard to see how our adversaries can get that information, pass it on to the Houthis in this case, and put military lives at risk.
07:20It's just so, so very simple.
07:23And that is because, like you said, there's no real leadership at the top.
07:26It's a circus.
07:27It's a circus.
07:28I mean, does anybody, I mean, think about it.
07:30Everybody's playing dress up.
07:32Mm-hmm.
07:33Everybody's playing, from Kristi Noem to Pete Hegseth to Cash Patel.
07:36They're all playing dress up.
07:38It's like they, they think they're in a movie.
07:40Yeah.
07:41Well, in the States...
07:42Wait a minute, but they were on, a lot of, Hickseth he found on television.
07:45Yes, but he wasn't in the movies.
07:46No.
07:47All right.
07:48All right.
07:49Picky, picky, picky.
07:50I am picky.
07:51The States couldn't be higher when we're talking about the Department of Defense,
07:53because again, on this issue of these military strikes in the Caribbean.
07:56Mm-hmm.
07:57Listen, I am the first person to say we need to stop the flow of illicit drugs into this country.
08:01We all know people who have had their lives ruined from fentanyl coming into this country.
08:05The vast majority is not...
08:06But is it coming from Venezuela?
08:07No.
08:08No, it's not.
08:09That's Anna's point.
08:10It's coming from Mexico.
08:11Yeah.
08:12It's coming from several places, including inside our own country.
08:15Correct.
08:16But by the way, the border is largely secured, and that's something Donald Trump has taken
08:20credit for.
08:21Secure the border, and we don't need to engage in military operations to stop boats, because
08:25the fentanyl will not be able to come in.
08:27Right.
08:28Just focus on the homeland.
08:29If you have people on a boat, and you blow up the boat, and there's two people hanging
08:36on the side of the boat, they're not carrying fentanyl.
08:39They're not swimming with the fentanyl on there.
08:41Yeah.
08:42So they weren't posing any danger.
08:43And it's a war crime, according to the military.
08:45And we're not at war with anybody.
08:47That's right.
08:48No one voted for war.
08:49They would rather have an allegation of a war crime than let people in America focus
08:54on a bad economy and the Epstein files.
08:56Yeah.
08:57They would rather you look over here than over here.
08:59That's what this is about to make.
09:00Well, there's also something more at play here.
09:02Yeah.
09:03He's working some angle that doesn't have to do with drugs.
09:05Yeah.
09:06Whether it's regime change, or oil, it's something else.
09:08It could be everything but what we need.
09:10What it is.
09:11Yeah.
09:12You know, we need y'all to pay attention.
09:14And we're gonna keep saying it, and we're gonna keep pointing it out.
09:16And this is what reporters and everybody else needs to do.
09:19When you hear someone is saying and giving bad information, like Abby Phillips did the
09:24other day.
09:25She said that is not true.
09:26Yeah.
09:27That is not happening.
09:28We all need more of that.
09:30Yeah.
09:31Because that's the only way we're gonna stop this in the bud.
09:33Yeah.
09:35Welcome back.
09:36Stephen A. Smith has no shortage of opinions, whether he's talking about sports on ESPN's
09:56first take or politics on his new serious XM show, Straight Shooter with Stephen A.
10:02So please welcome back Stephen A. Smith.
10:05What's up ladies, how you doing?
10:26We have a question.
10:27Aren't you on live right now?
10:28Uh, yes.
10:29Okay.
10:30But I went on there from 10 to 11, and then they said they needed, my teammates at ABC
10:36needed me here, so I'm here.
10:37Oh, I see.
10:38Right across the hall, though.
10:39That's right.
10:40It is nice to have you as a neighbor and at the table.
10:41Thank you so much.
10:42Good to see y'all.
10:43So it's been a minute since you were here.
10:44Last time you were here, it was six weeks into Trump 2.0, his second administration.
10:48And you had some really sharp criticisms of Democrats in the election for having sort
10:53of lost touch with the issues the voters cared about.
10:56Yep.
10:57How are you feeling now a year into Trump, and what do you make of this discussion around
11:01affordability and him saying it seems like it's a scam from Democrats?
11:05Well, that's rhetoric on his part.
11:06There's nothing surprising or unpredictable about that.
11:08You could see that coming from a mile away, because he has to say that right now, because
11:12it's an issue and a concern for the American people.
11:14And he wants to act as if there is no concern, because everything he's doing is just so beautiful
11:18and so marvelous and what have you.
11:20But in the end, the Democrats give the credit where credit is due at this particular moment
11:25in time.
11:26I think that they've learned from some of their mistakes anyway.
11:29When you see what happened in New York with Mamdani, when you see what happens in New Jersey
11:33with Cheryl as the governor, when you see what happens with Spamberger in Virginia,
11:37clearly there's something that's going on within the Democratic establishment that's saying,
11:42let's focus on real issues that are pertinent to the American people.
11:45Let's make sure we articulate ourselves appropriately so we don't lose sight of what the message should
11:50be leading up to the election.
11:52They did just that, and I thought they handed him the election as opposed to him actually winning it.
11:57Now they're forcing him to play ball and figure out a way to beat them because they're coming
12:04and they're gaining some momentum.
12:05We'll see what happens from there.
12:07Well Steven, as we wait the release of the Epstein files,
12:10House Oversight Democrats released this trove of really creepy photos from inside Jeffrey Epstein's private island.
12:17So I want to ask you, is this the tip of the iceberg?
12:19What do you think the Trump administration will actually and ultimately release?
12:23And if they have nothing to hide, why did they fight so forcefully against this?
12:27I'm suspicious. I'm suspicious in terms of, you know, the hesitancy in releasing the Epstein files, particularly when it's something you campaigned on.
12:36So I think in that regard, fine. But I also believe that there are people that have seen the Epstein files and if there was something directly incriminating about Trump,
12:44it's something that would have been we would have found out about it before the election because every measure would have been exhausted to make sure he didn't return to the White House.
12:51I do believe, however, when you have power brokers in place, what happens is on both sides of the aisle, it could be people in those Epstein files that can be severely incriminated, obviously.
13:02Well, they protect each other.
13:04Well, they protect each other.
13:05You don't think Trump is in the files? I mean, he was mentioned over a thousand times.
13:08I'm not saying he wasn't in the files. I'm saying that if it was something really, really incriminating against him, I think we would have heard about it by now.
13:17I think him and others on both sides of the aisle that have friends that they're trying to protect.
13:23Well, and it could be billionaires and people that supply their whole election.
13:26That's what I'm talking about.
13:27That's what I'm talking about. And let's not act like that's a surprise.
13:30He says he was a very close friend of his. I mean, he denies that.
13:33Once upon a time, he did say that, but there's also videos of him calling out Epstein and saying,
13:39down the line, beware, because there's going to be some dirt you're going to find out about this man.
13:43Yeah, but remember what year he said that.
13:442015.
13:45Yeah.
13:46That's kind of, you know.
13:48They did reportedly have a falling out, but...
13:50Yeah.
13:51I heard it was over some property in Florida, believe it or not.
13:54Yeah.
13:55I mean, the excuses for it is what it is.
13:57The point is, is that Epstein was doing what he was doing for years.
14:00Yeah.
14:01So whether it was 2015, 2010, I don't care when it was.
14:04If you're that kind of despicable human being, I want to find out.
14:07Yeah.
14:08I don't give a damn if it was 20 years ago, 40 years ago.
14:10If you were that kind of person, we need to know you about.
14:13So you want to see the files?
14:14Well, of course I want to see the files.
14:15Me too.
14:16Of course I want to see the files.
14:17Me too.
14:18Yeah.
14:19Okay.
14:20So let's talk about this, because Trump is claiming that he aced the cognitive test.
14:23Mm-hmm.
14:24Even though he's going on late night, truth social tirades.
14:28In the middle of the night, he's texting and texting and calling Governor Waltz a name
14:33that we don't use anymore to disability.
14:36He's attacking female reporters as piggy and ugly.
14:40Mm-hmm.
14:41He's falling asleep in the middle of a meeting.
14:43I mean, I said yesterday that Marco Rubio is boring, but not that boring that he would
14:48fall asleep.
14:49Okay.
14:50So what do you think is going on with him?
14:52Trump is being Trump.
14:54Oh, really?
14:55There's nothing cognitively wrong there?
14:56Well, I'm not saying whether there is or isn't.
14:58What I'm saying is 77 million people don't care.
15:00They voted for him.
15:01And those same 77 million people...
15:02Is it still that number?
15:03They were doing...
15:04Well, you could say that it is or isn't, but the point is he's the President
15:07of the United States, despite the onslaught of stuff that was coming his way.
15:11He knocked off folks, and the Democrats let him because they weren't on their game.
15:14Now you have to look at, because obviously he's not going to circumvent the 22nd Amendment,
15:18which will enable him to run for a third term.
15:20So now you're talking about J.D. Vance or Marco Rubio.
15:22Marco Rubio is considered the adult in the room, Secretary of State, National Defense,
15:26you know, a national security advisor.
15:28You got J.D. Vance, he's the vice president, but he seems more Trump-ish in terms of how he
15:33conducts himself and how he's willing to go after people.
15:36So who is Trump going to support?
15:38One of the things that I talked about on my show was that I said,
15:41don't fall for it.
15:42Look at what Trump is doing.
15:43Trump is positioning himself to remain in power even if he isn't the president.
15:47Yeah.
15:48He wants to make sure he maintains that level of influence.
15:50And so because of...
15:51You see what he's done with the Honduras president, letting him out, part of him.
15:55Yeah.
15:56Even though the man is alleged to assist in funneling 1,400 tons of cocaine into the United States.
16:02Not alleged.
16:03He was serving 45 years.
16:0445 years, absolutely.
16:05Yeah.
16:06And you let him out in the same breath.
16:08You're bombing people in the Caribbean for the very thing that...
16:11You said it was a problem.
16:12You said it was a problem.
16:13Well, let's talk about the bombing.
16:14All of that stuff, he's doing what he's doing.
16:16But in the end, what it comes down to is that you're going to have to be him.
16:21Because he is going to make sure he dictates who his successor is going to be.
16:27If he stays awake.
16:28Anticipate he's going to be awake.
16:29My friend, I want to talk to you about the bombing, my friend.
16:32Yes.
16:33And some things that you recently said.
16:35You know I like you, right?
16:36I like you.
16:37Okay, so you recently accused Senator Mark Kelly, a veteran, an astronaut, of crossing the line for participating in a video reminding troops that they can refuse to follow illegal orders.
16:50Let's see some of what you said, my friend.
16:53Sure.
16:54You know better, Senator Kelly.
16:55You know better.
16:57How dare you do that?
16:58You can go to the house.
16:59You can put a drawer of paperwork.
17:01You can try to start articles of impeachment if you think there's something illegal.
17:05I mean, damn, it ain't like y'all haven't done it before.
17:08You impeached a man twice.
17:11Where'd that get you?
17:12Got us behind back in the White House.
17:15Had you left him alone since 2020, maybe he wouldn't be back.
17:19You don't tell military men and women to ignore an order from the commander in chief.
17:26You don't do that.
17:27Caffeine's a bitch, you know?
17:29Now, let me just remind you that Pete Hegseth said in 2016, I do think there have to be consequences for abject war crimes.
17:41If you're doing something that is just completely unlawful and ruthless, then there is a consequence for that.
17:45That's why the military said it won't follow unlawful orders from their commander in chief.
17:50Okay.
17:51Now, given the fact that the secretary himself said that, I'd love to give you the opportunity to perhaps change your position on what you said.
17:59I'm not changing a thing.
18:00Okay.
18:01I didn't stutter when I said it.
18:02You wanna say loud and wrong?
18:03Well, you can call it loud and wrong all you want to.
18:04You're entitled to your opinion.
18:05I'm entitled to mine.
18:06Okay.
18:07Here's the reality of the situation.
18:08First of all, I don't give a damn what Pete Hegseth has to say because I will tell you right now, he was never qualified for the job.
18:13When you talk about DEI and eradicating that, excuse me, what was he doing hosting Fox News on the weekend and all of a sudden he's the defense secretary?
18:20Right.
18:21Please give me a break.
18:22I don't care what he has to say.
18:23We'll get that out the way.
18:24As it pertains to Mark Kelly, what I was talking about is military.
18:27What I did was get on the phone with family and friends who have served in the military.
18:32And I said, we're not civilians.
18:34This is not the court of law.
18:36You can be implicated for implying something if you are a former military member or you are a present military member.
18:43It wasn't what Mark Kelly said.
18:45It's the fact that he was a combat Navy pilot who served in the military who would tell folks ignore an order when it could get them in order.
18:53Ignore an illegal.
18:54I said illegal.
18:55I said illegal.
18:56I'm talking about illegal.
18:57I understand that.
18:58He said you don't have to follow an unlawful order and that is in the military code of conduct.
19:04And I'm saying to you, hold on, which I'm aware of, which I'm aware of.
19:09But it didn't sound like you were aware of that during the show.
19:12I disagree with you.
19:13Stephen, can I ask you a question?
19:14I had two governors, by the way, text me to tell me I was wrong and they agree with you.
19:19You are wrong.
19:20And I had two senators that reached out to me and said, you aren't wrong at all.
19:25Well, Mikey Sherrill did say that the reason they felt the need to put that out is they were constantly being approached by people in the military saying we're being put in really uncomfortable situations.
19:34That to me is a little more relatable when you're a veteran yourself.
19:38But I'm saying to you, let me say this real quick.
19:40You got to do it real quick.
19:42Or wait till we come back.
19:43All I'm saying is this.
19:44If you're a member of the military, I'm looking at the soldiers as saying, don't get yourself in trouble.
19:50Let somebody else do it.
19:52Don't you do it because it ain't going to work for you.
19:54Sorry, that was Alyssa Slapkin, not Mikey Sherrill.
19:56I'm sorry.
19:57Okay.
19:58Whatever it was you can clean up when we come back because you have more with Stephen A. Smith.
20:02Right in return.
20:15We are back with Stephen A. Smith.
20:17Joy has the question.
20:19Yeah.
20:20You have the question.
20:21Okay.
20:22But you already asked this one.
20:23I did?
20:24Yeah, I think you did.
20:25Well, no.
20:26Now we're talking about something else.
20:27We're talking about the fact that there seems to be a little bit of a crack in the MAGA world.
20:29I mean, Marjorie Taylor Greene was on here apologizing for her behavior.
20:33Yeah.
20:34And also basically going against Trump about the Epstein files, wanting them released.
20:39Also, not just her, Massey, who is a Republican, Boebert, Nancy Mace, and also even Elise Stefanik is turning on Mike Johnson.
20:50Johnson, there's a little bit of some rebellion going on in the Republican Party.
20:54Well, there's no doubt about it.
20:55Well, first of all, when the whole SNAP program issue came into fold, remember, a lot of that existed in the red states as well.
21:02You had members of the Republican parties that had constituency to represent, and they weren't feeling like they were doing the job.
21:08That's number one.
21:09In the case of Marjorie Taylor Greene, remember, she came into office worth $700,000, according to the reports, departing worth $25 million.
21:15So I think she's doing just fine.
21:17It's one of those situations.
21:18How did she make that money?
21:19Well, I have no idea.
21:20You'd have to ask her.
21:21But I would tell you this.
21:22I think that she thought that she was going to be more supportive from Trump, according to a lot of leaks out of Washington.
21:28She had aspirations to run for the Senate seat in Georgia.
21:31Mm-hmm.
21:32Trump wasn't supportive of that.
21:33She felt betrayed, considering how loyal she had been to him.
21:36Not to mention the fact that, again, SNAP situation, health care, the Epstein files that he campaigned on that, you know, all of a sudden he went against, and she was a big proponent of opening those Epstein files.
21:47So they're clearly not on the same page.
21:49Some people are not on the same page with Trump.
21:51They understand that because, again, he's approaching his time up, and people are trying to reposition themselves for power, and sometimes that breaks those cracks of loyalty that you thought you had.
22:00So it wasn't altruistic, her position.
22:02You're saying it was self-serving.
22:03I don't know.
22:04But when you go from $700,000 to $25 million, I don't think the word self-serving is taboo.
22:10Stephen, when we asked you if you wanted to run for president last time, you said, quote, hell no.
22:16So why is your name still being floated around as a contender, and is there anything that could change that to a hell yes?
22:23Well, number one, because I think that I'd probably be a better candidate than most Democrats.
22:27That's number one.
22:28I wouldn't say that about Wes Moore.
22:30I wouldn't say that about Josh Shapiro.
22:31I love Wes Moore.
22:32Good.
22:33I love Wes Moore.
22:34I love Josh Shapiro.
22:35Roe Conner I'm a fan of.
22:36I like him a lot.
22:37Jason Crowe.
22:38You got to pay attention to Gavin Newsom.
22:40He's gaining some traction.
22:41I don't think he'll win, but he's gaining traction.
22:43Why not?
22:44Because I think that ultimately they'll look at the state of California, look at affordability, look at homelessness, look at crime, and they'll say, hello, highest cost of living in the country.
22:52They'll be like, what?
22:53Wait a minute now.
22:54So I think that'll be a problem for him.
22:55But he's articulate enough to defend himself, and we'll see what happens with that.
22:58That's not his fault.
22:59But as it pertains to me, I don't have any desire to be a politician.
23:03My life is really, really nice, but in the same breath, I see, when I see what I saw prior to the election, if you're going to come to me and tell me that's our alternative, what was coming on, what was going on before the election.
23:18And you're saying, you know, Stephen A., you could be on the debate stage with these politicians and you get an opportunity to call them out.
23:22Do you mean Convola? Are you referring to Convola?
23:23I would love it.
23:24I'm referring to all of them.
23:25Everybody.
23:26Nobody's getting a pass from the Democratic Party.
23:27She was the candidate.
23:28Well, again, she was the candidate, but we know what happened.
23:31I thought she was set up to fail by the Democratic Party personally because you bypassed the primary.
23:36You knew that Biden wasn't ready.
23:38You knew it for a year.
23:39And you did nothing.
23:41And you were really trying to sell the American people on pushing him forward as a Democratic nominee, knowing that inauguration, he would have been 82 years of age.
23:48Stop it.
23:49So what?
23:50They knew better.
23:51That's a problem for him.
23:52Not everybody.
23:53Nancy Pelosi is sharp, but Biden didn't appear that way.
23:55Period.
23:56He may not have appeared that way, but my stuff was a lot cleaner and better when he was in.
24:00Yeah.
24:01Right.
24:02I'm just gonna say it.
24:03And I'm gonna say one more thing because, you know, I know that you have very strong feelings about Democrats, but I do have this to say to you.
24:10Okay.
24:11It was important, I think, for Democrats to show that they stood with the LGBT community, that they stood with black women and women in general, because once you let us go, once you let women and poor people go, what do you have?
24:28And so I've listened to lots of people say, you know, that you didn't follow what was necessary.
24:33They did it the way they thought they could.
24:35It didn't work for them.
24:36Hold on.
24:37See, respectfully, I don't like that.
24:40Let me explain.
24:41That's okay.
24:42Let me explain.
24:43Just like you said to Sonny.
24:44Let me explain.
24:45He sure did say that to me.
24:46Let me explain.
24:47We're gonna come back.
24:48We have to take a break.
24:49We have to take a break.
24:50More with Stephen A. Smith.

25:09So get shopping right now at ViewYourDeal.com.
25:12We're back with Stephen A. Smith.
25:15You are about to disagree.
25:17I was disagreeing with this.
25:19As a Democrat, the bottom line is this.
25:21When we talk about poor people, who ain't thinking about poor people?
25:23Democratic Party, I know I do.
25:25I know that most candidates within the Democratic Party that I know, I know they think about poor folks.
25:31I know they think about the desolate and the disenfranchised.
25:33I get that.
25:34But what I'm saying is that during the campaign, were you doing what it takes to win?
25:39You had too many people going after him for stuff that wasn't going to stick.
25:44It wasn't going to influence his voters.
25:45So what I would say to you, Whoopi, and what I would say to anybody that doesn't want J.D. Vance or Marco Rubio or somebody like that to succeed him, focus on what's going to win.
25:54That's where my sports background comes in.
25:56Tell me what's going to win.
25:57I don't want to hear, but I understand the LGBTQ community is important.
26:01I understand that the desolate and disenfranchised is somebody we should always be looking out for.
26:06I understand the economy.
26:07I understand immigration.
26:08I get all of that.
26:09But the point is, I'm trying to win to make sure that I'm in office and you're not.
26:14What is it going to take?
26:15The Democrats did not do that last time.
26:17And that's what happened.
26:18What is the winning issue now?
26:19Affordability and safety.
26:21Yes.
26:22Period.
26:23Affordability and safety for the streets of the United States.
26:26Which affects all those groups.
26:27And a willingness to cross the aisle and show that you're willing to work with people to get stuff done so we don't have this chaos just because we disagree.
26:36I think that the Democrats try harder than the Republicans to do that.
26:40Really?
26:41Yeah.
26:42I don't know about that.
26:43Here's what we do know.
26:44I don't know about that.
26:45We do know that you can listen to Straight Shooter with Stephen A. Smith on Sirius XM every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m.
26:53You can catch him every morning on ESPN's first take except he took a little break today.
