00:01Moments of incredible danger.
00:08Somebody got hurt.
00:10Moments of astounding discovery.
00:13Whoa, I believe this is a coin.
00:15No.
00:16Are you serious?
00:17What?
00:18We just found a chill.
00:20Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:21It's a cross.
00:22That's a cross.
00:23Good to see you, Frank.
00:25And moments of extraordinary friendship,
00:28cemented by unbreakable bonds.
00:33We're gonna carry on for him.
00:37It's more than we're gonna carry on for him.
00:40We're gonna carry on with him.
00:46On the curse of Oak Island,
00:48we've seen Rick, Marty, and the team
00:50find literally hundreds of amazing clues,
00:52artifacts, and even pieces of treasure.
00:54It's beautiful.
00:55Each and every one of those files
00:57and the pursuit of them
00:59have produced unforgettable moments.
01:02Well, tonight, we're going to take
01:03one more look at those moments.
01:05Ah.
01:07We're going to revisit the highs and lows,
01:09the thrills of discovery,
01:11and the bitter disappointments.
01:13That was the day they were killed.
01:14Wow.
01:15We chose these moments by going to Rick,
01:17Marty, Craig, and the team for their thoughts.
01:19We also reached out to you,
01:21the viewers and fans, through social media.
01:23So, relax, get comfortable,
01:25and get ready to look back at the top ten moments
01:28from the past six incredible seasons.
01:31If you know anything about Rick Lagina,
01:37you know he is a man who is fully convinced
01:39that something of incredible importance
01:41happened here centuries ago on Oak Island.
01:45His brother Marty, on the other hand,
01:46is a bit of a skeptic.
01:47When it comes to the mystery,
01:48he's waiting to see and hold definitive proof
01:50in his hands.
01:51Which leads us to number ten,
01:52finding the Spanish coin.
01:54For much of season one,
02:01the Oak Island team conducted a number of bold operations
02:06to search for clues and treasure.
02:10Number ten, finding the Spanish coin.
02:15For much of season one,
02:17the Oak Island team conducted a number
02:19a number of bold operations to search for clues and treasure.
02:25I'm getting a hit here.
02:27Definitely.
02:29And although some interesting finds were made,
02:31such as the coconut fiber, no actual evidence of treasure
02:35had been discovered.
02:36There's something there.
02:37And then literally, during the final week of filming,
02:40the Spanish meravidee was found in the swamp.
02:43See that? See that?
02:46Oh .
02:47What is it?
02:49This could be something big.
02:50You serious?
02:56Whoa.
02:58Is it a coin?
02:59I believe this is a coin.
03:01No.
03:01You serious?
03:02What?
03:03A genuine pirate treasure coin.
03:06It's a great thing to be here with Rick right now.
03:09It's like here we are off again, collecting money
03:11from our paper out.
03:12Only this time, it's a pirate coin in the swamp.
03:15I'm just ecstatic about that, because I see the happiness
03:18in my brother's face, and that's great.
03:20It changed everything for Marty,
03:22and led to an incredible moment.
03:24It's been a good day.
03:25How cold is this water?
03:27Who cares?
03:28There you go.
03:30When the brothers decided to wash the stench and muck
03:33from the swamp off of them in the ocean.
03:36We hadn't come up with that coin.
03:39I was going to ask you to call it quits.
03:41I'm not sure what the answer was, please.
03:50It's OK.
03:52But here's the thing.
03:53I'm still in.
03:55Let's go.
03:55One in, all in.
03:56Let's go for everyone.
04:00It's a good day, Rick.
04:01Not just a good day.
04:03It's a great day.
04:04One for us.
04:04Number nine, Rick's illness.
04:12Now, most of our top moments revolve around exciting finds
04:15and new breakthroughs.
04:16Are we going to do it today?
04:18We going to get out of the wood today?
04:20That's the main thing.
04:21Yeah, I agree.
04:22But there have also been times of great concern,
04:25and even danger.
04:27Where's Rick at?
04:30That's when the team has really pulled together,
04:33as we saw when Marty Lagina arrived at the money pit
04:36one morning.
04:36I'm going to go give him a call, OK?
04:38To find out that his brother, Rick,
04:40had inexplicably not shown up for a big operation,
04:43something just wasn't right.
04:46Rick.
04:48What is going on with you?
04:50I got knocked on my keister a little bit over the weekend.
04:56I got some sort of bite on my back.
05:01Yeah?
05:02It's about three, four inches across,
05:04and it's blistered and swollen.
05:06But for the last four days, I've had a headache
05:09that's just been pounding away.
05:12Aches, chills, fever.
05:15You know what, though?
05:16I'm telling you what.
05:17That sounds like maybe you should get, I'm serious.
05:19Maybe you should go to the emergency room.
05:21Rick fights all the time about, you know, he hardly,
05:24that guy has hardly ever been to the doctor in his life.
05:26He's like one of those kind of guys.
05:28Rick doesn't let much get him down.
05:30It's pretty tough.
05:31I mean, you know, this is serious.
05:33You still have the pounding headache, yes?
05:36Yes.
05:37Oh, boy.
05:38All right, I'm coming over.
05:40See you.
05:41OK.
05:42Bye.
05:49I'm a big brother.
05:51Good job.
05:51He's sick.
05:55A little bit worried about him, actually.
05:57I mean, he's usually so indestructible.
06:00But he's, he doesn't, if he's not here, he's not well.
06:04Anyway, I'm going to go see him.
06:06Absolutely.
06:06All right.
06:07OK.
06:08I'm concerned, this is just really disconcerting.
06:21The seriousness of what Rick's suffering from
06:23was underscored, obviously, because he's not
06:28going to stay away from Oak Island
06:29while exploration efforts are underway.
06:31It's going to take getting, you know, figuratively hit
06:34by a truck to keep him off here.
06:37Rick.
06:37Hey.
06:38So what is going on?
06:40I'm doing research.
06:41No, no, I'm not talking about that.
06:43You.
06:43I mean, I know you're sick because you don't.
06:45I am not as sick.
06:47You got a rash?
06:48Yeah, take a look.
06:49Come on over here.
06:49Come on over here in the light.
06:51He does not look good.
06:53You know, he just, just his whole presence,
06:55he's got no spark.
06:56And I could tell that the pain from his headache
06:59was, you know, almost unbearable.
07:00I've had a headache for about four days,
07:03that ibuprofen are more adamant.
07:06Right now, even now, pounding headache?
07:07Right now.
07:09Ew.
07:10I mean, I don't know, but that looks like Lyme disease
07:13or shingles to me.
07:16Marty was right to be concerned.
07:18Rick was seriously ill after being bitten by a deer tick,
07:21meaning that he was very likely suffering
07:23from symptoms of Lyme disease.
07:25All right, got you to a doctor.
07:27Let's go.
07:27Come on.
07:28I haven't been to a doctor in 50 years.
07:30It doesn't matter.
07:31We're going to a doctor.
07:32Let's go.
07:33He has a very high tolerance for pain.
07:35I can tell you that for sure.
07:38And he will motor through, carry on, finish the job,
07:42in virtually any circumstances.
07:44So I know this is serious.
07:46So, you know, I mean, you know, he's my brother.
07:48I love him.
07:49I hate to see him sick like that.
07:52Let's go.
07:55It's a debilitating condition that,
07:57if not treated immediately, can become incurable.
08:01Tell you what, though, I really, I would have not,
08:04had it not been for the rash.
08:05No, you wouldn't think.
08:06You'd think you'd just, yeah, something, you know, a bug.
08:09Yep.
08:09I know, it's, it's scary.
08:12Scary, but I'm glad you, I'm glad you,
08:14I'm glad you brought awareness, though,
08:15because now I'm going to be paranoid.
08:18I was completely unaware that I had gotten Lyme disease.
08:21Had it not been for the bullseye,
08:23I would have paid no attention.
08:25And there's a lot of serious complications that arise
08:29if you don't catch it early.
08:32Thanks to Marty's concern for his older brother,
08:35Rick got the quick treatment he needed
08:37and was returned to full health to continue
08:40the search for answers,
08:41leading to many more unforgettable moments.
08:48Our next top moment was also one that fell
08:50on a very emotional note.
08:54Number eight, Rick Restall's return.
08:57Hello, Lee.
08:58Hello.
08:59Hi, how are you?
09:00It once again involved a moving visit
09:02by members of the Restall family as Lee Lamb returned.
09:05This is my brother, Rick Restall.
09:07But this time, she came with her younger brother, Richard.
09:11Well, welcome back.
09:13Yeah, you're welcome.
09:15Ricky, as he was known back then,
09:17was just nine years old when he moved to Oak Island.
09:20While his father, Robert Sr., and older brother, Bobby Jr.,
09:24worked day after day searching for the clues
09:26to solve the mystery, Ricky was homeschooled
09:29by his mother, Mildred, and was left to spend most
09:32of his spare time exploring and playing
09:34on the island all by himself.
09:36Although he saw his life on the island
09:38as carefree and idyllic at first, over time,
09:41he grew very lonely, longing for change.
09:45Tragically, change only came when after almost six years,
09:49his father and brother were killed in the tragic accident
09:52at Smith's Cove in August of 1965.
09:56Ricky and his mother left Oak Island almost immediately,
09:59but the emotional wounds of how their chapter ended
10:03never fully healed.
10:05I thought it might be time to deal with what came up
10:10when my father and my brother died and we left the island.
10:15It was kind of a sudden and unplanned departure.
10:19So in some ways, I've never left the island.
10:24Wow.
10:26There you go.
10:26Big place.
10:28Great.
10:30After touring the Interpretive Center
10:31with Rick, Marty, and members of the team
10:33and seeing a whole section dedicated to the Restall family...
10:37It's a key part of the museum
10:38and your family's a key part of the history.
10:41Ricky and Lee were given a special surprise,
10:44a touching piece of Ricky's history,
10:46found earlier that year by Gary Drayton.
10:48We found this out on Isaac's Point
10:51and the thought was because you were a young lad at the time,
10:57everyone said, well, you know, this might be Ricky's.
11:00Might that mean anything to you?
11:10Wow.
11:11It looks, uh, yeah, my friend.
11:19My gosh, this must be my gun.
11:23I know I lost it and, well, looks like it's here again after 50-odd years.
11:31It's got to be a neat thing that the last time you handled that you were, what, 10?
11:37To that the most, 10.
11:40And how much smaller my hands must have been then.
11:43To me, it was interesting when we showed Ricky the cap gun.
11:48I think, in that moment, certainly it brought him back to his youth.
11:53And my hope in that moment was that they were good memories,
11:57that that moment would be a bit transformative, if you will, for him,
12:01that he could perhaps let go of the past.
12:06I remember arriving on the island with all the stuff
12:09that a city kid would have, like a cowboy outfit.
12:12Oh, there you go.
12:13The hat, the holster, the gun.
12:15And by the end of that summer, I think most of that stuff was,
12:18well, somewhere else on the island.
12:21Yeah.
12:22Just look and say...
12:24Actually seeing a gun from that era was a reminder
12:28of what a carefree childhood would be.
12:32And it was a reminder of my time, my first summer on the island,
12:35in other words, was fun and childish games and mostly imagination.
12:41It was like a paradise in those days.
12:45That's neat.
12:46This trip was momentous for me because it draws my brother into his rightful place.
12:57He's got a deep connection with the island.
13:01This was Ricky's moment.
13:05It's just an absolute pleasure meeting you, sir.
13:07And of course, this young lady is always a pleasure.
13:09Thank you very much.
13:11Ricky Restall's return to Oak Island wasn't only an important moment for him,
13:16but it was also one of the best moments in the entire series.
13:19It reminded us of the struggles and tragedies that have occurred here
13:23and proved that all treasures aren't made of mere gold or silver.
13:32We've had to say goodbye to a number of beloved people
13:35over the course of the show.
13:37Zena Halpern, Fred Nolan, and most recently, Dan Blankenship.
13:43But as hard as those passings were on Rick, Marty, and the team,
13:46perhaps nothing was felt greater than the loss of its youngest member,
13:49Craig Tester's 16-year-old son, Drake, just before the start of season five.
13:56Craig? Jack?
13:58Good to see you, Craig.
14:00Number seven, Drake's message.
14:05It was a loss that understandably left Craig, Jack Bagley, Drake's half-brother,
14:10and their whole family devastated.
14:12Craig's been my friend for 40-some years.
14:15He's suffering with a loss I can't even comprehend.
14:21I was surprised to see Craig and Jack.
14:23You know, it's almost incom...
14:25You know, it's almost incomprehensible to understand.
14:29Well, I'm glad he's here,
14:31because I'm sure this is at least a distraction.
14:34You know, he's able to use his considerable intellect on this.
14:38And I think the same, you know, the same distraction is good for Jack.
14:44It's good for Jack.
14:47So, we're here.
14:51And we're glad you are.
14:57He was a big part of all of our lives.
14:59Yes.
15:00I know everyone, he thought of all you guys as family,
15:03and I know he wouldn't want us to stop looking.
15:08It's tough to follow your dream when, you know...
15:13My dream was never not to have Drake with me.
15:21Holy camoly.
15:22Wow.
15:23From seasons one through four,
15:24we watched Drake grow up before our eyes
15:27as an eager and active member of the team.
15:29You want to walk on down here?
15:31Yeah.
15:32He not only helped Rick, Marty, and his dad
15:34in digging operations around the island...
15:36Can you bring it out?
15:37Yeah.
15:39You want to be my pinpointer today?
15:41Sure.
15:41All right.
15:42It's been a while.
15:43But with his big brother, Jack,
15:44he and the team also made important new finds.
15:47What is it?
15:49Maybe a piece of chest handle?
15:51Yeah, it is a handle.
15:52Good call.
15:57It's a big, big day for us today.
15:59I mean, you're about to put the caissons down
16:02that are going to get us to the target at 141.
16:04This is really the culmination of eight years.
16:06And to that end, we all want to put our John Henrys on that.
16:11Say we were here at this moment in time.
16:13And during season four, just before the beginning
16:16of the team's first major big dig in the money pit area,
16:19Rick Lagina led the team in a heartfelt ceremony,
16:22where everyone signed the massive 50-inch wide steel caisson.
16:27And what Drake wrote has become number seven on our list
16:31of top 10 moments.
16:38I would say that this island, it was our place to bond as a family.
16:43There you go, Drake.
16:44We're going to miss him, but he's always going to be with us.
16:53We're going to carry on for him.
16:57It's more than we're going to carry on for him.
17:00We're going to carry on for him.
17:01We're going to carry on for him.
17:06What Drake wrote on that caisson perfectly captures
17:08the essence of what the Oak Island team is all about.
17:12Family.
17:13Thank you, Drake.
17:15We will always miss you.
17:19The slip weight, we had a fairly strong date on.
17:23That's that 1771.
17:25It is original features.
17:26Now, although Rick, Marty, and the team
17:28have worked with literally dozens
17:30of different theorists, researchers.
17:32All of the stars align it onto the island.
17:36This is a star man.
17:37And even past treasure hunters in the quest
17:39to solve the Oak Island mystery.
17:40What's that right there?
17:42That's definitely metal.
17:43Their efforts to align with one key searcher
17:46with an immense history on the island was a major feat.
17:49It also brings us to the next top moment on our list.
17:53Number six, Fred's peace offering.
17:58Fred Nolan was a professional surveyor
18:01who first became interested in trying
18:03to solve the Oak Island mystery back in 1958.
18:07Although he was unable to ever reach a deal
18:10with then owner M.R. Chappell to excavate the money pit,
18:13Chappell did allow Fred to survey the island in 1961.
18:18Intrigued by what he saw in the form
18:20of different man-made markers,
18:22such as the legendary stone triangle
18:24and a number of drilled stones,
18:26Fred became convinced that the keys
18:28to solving the Oak Island mystery
18:30may very well lie not underground, but on the surface.
18:34That doesn't mean Fred didn't do some digging,
18:36figuratively speaking.
18:39In 1963, while searching through public records,
18:43he found that the titles to seven lots
18:45near the center of the island,
18:47including a large part of the Oak Island swamp,
18:50were available for sale.
18:51He quickly bought them
18:53and began his own surface search of the island.
18:56In 1981, Fred carved his own Oak Island legacy in stone
19:02when he discovered five cone-shaped boulders
19:04that formed a perfectly symmetrical megalithic cross.
19:09At the very center, he was stunned to uncover
19:11a sixth boulder carved into the shape of a human head.
19:17But the story about those seven lots goes much deeper.
19:21In the late 1960s, when most of Oak Island,
19:24including the Money Pit, came to be owned by Dan Blankenship
19:28and his partner, David Tobias,
19:30the climate on the island became, well,
19:33a little dark and stormy.
19:35Although Dan and Fred worked for a brief time together,
19:38disputes over Fred's land soon erupted into a bitter feud
19:42that resulted in costly court battles
19:44and on more than one occasion,
19:46near violent confrontations.
19:50Unfortunately, the conflict between Fred and Dan
19:54would last for the rest of their lives.
19:56However, thanks to the tireless efforts
19:58on the part of Rick Lagina.
20:00Good morning, how are you?
20:02How are you?
20:03Oh yeah, good.
20:04Good, come on in.
20:05And with Dan's blessing,
20:07the team was able to convince Fred
20:09to sit down for a meeting,
20:11which led to an incredible moment in season three.
20:14Well, I just want to say, Fred, thanks for,
20:15you know, coming on board.
20:17We're eager to work with you
20:18because we know you have some sights.
20:20So it's time to quit the fighting and cooperate, right?
20:24Yeah, I don't want to be an obstacle anymore.
20:26You know, I'm too old for that now.
20:30I think it's great that we're working together.
20:32I really do.
20:33I mean, this is too big a puzzle.
20:34Yeah, entirely different Fred Nolan walked in that door.
20:39I think it finally makes sense to him
20:41to look forward rather than backwards.
20:44Welcome to the team.
20:45Well, I don't know.
20:46I've never been welcome here before.
20:47It's true, Fred.
20:49All right, well, let's quit talking.
20:50Let's get out in the field and start doing something.
20:52Yeah, perfect.
20:53Their new alliance would lead to a number
20:55of productive developments,
20:57such as Fred sharing his elaborate survey maps of the island.
21:01You know, I've been at it for so long now,
21:03that if I didn't relate this kind of stuff,
21:06who would put it together again?
21:08Fred has data that we do not have,
21:11and we cannot recreate.
21:13Fred also gave them unprecedented access to his property,
21:17where a drilling and digging operation
21:19led to the discovery of a surprising new clue.
21:23Very strange.
21:24Wood, Rick.
21:25I mean, look how nice and shaped it is.
21:28Well, it's definitely man-made.
21:29It's very apparent that it was an unusual item,
21:32and it was apparent that, you know, at that depth,
21:35it shouldn't be there.
21:40Oh, here's Fred.
21:41Although Fred Nolan passed away in 2016 at the age of 88...
21:46Hey, Tom. Been a while.
21:47...it was not before opening the door
21:49to a new era of cooperation,
21:52one that now lives on through his son, Tom,
21:54who recently joined the Oak Island team.
21:56Tom, what do you think your father would think right now?
21:59He'd be pretty excited about it all.
22:02Although a number of clues have been found
22:04that suggest the key to solving the Oak Island mystery
22:07might be located in a number of places,
22:09there are many who insist that the treasure
22:11will ultimately be discovered right here
22:13where it all started, at the Money Pit.
22:17We're looking for a void and or whatever.
22:20Let's find something. Let's do it today.
22:22Let's make today the day.
22:24Number five, All That Glitters,
22:27came out of an incredible drilling operation
22:29led by island historian Charles Barkhouse
22:32to help the team locate the original Money Pit.
22:35What makes you so sure it's here?
22:38I don't know, David.
22:40You know, it's the belief, the feeling,
22:42just everything that I've looked at over the years.
22:45I just feel it's over this way.
22:49In season three, Charles convinced Rick and the team
22:52to drill at a spot in the Money Pit area
22:55that he thought would pay off.
22:58I've never believed that the Money Pit
22:59was where a lot of people claim it to be.
23:01I think it's to the Northwest,
23:02but this is a spot I picked.
23:05The resulting borehole named C1
23:08produced stunning results.
23:09There's no rock there anymore.
23:11No? No rock?
23:13Zero.
23:13Zero rock, no rock.
23:15It's just dropping.
23:17Still dropping?
23:18Huge cap.
23:21That's huge.
23:22About 192 to bottom?
23:24To bottom?
23:25Yeah.
23:26171 to 192?
23:2921 feet.
23:32That's right.
23:33A 20-foot void in the bedrock at 171 feet.
23:38Stunning, right?
23:39There's nothing there, you know what I mean?
23:43Well, hang on to your helmet.
23:46Because it was when Rick, Charles, and Dave Blankenship
23:48had a sewer camera.
23:50Here we go.
23:50Fed deep down into the huge cavern,
23:53that led to our big moment.
23:55Let's see what it looks like in the water.
23:57Yeah.
23:57What's that?
23:58I have no idea.
23:59That curved thing, that right there?
24:00Yeah, exactly.
24:01Shiny like metal.
24:02Yeah, it looks metallic.
24:03What the hell is that?
24:04Did Charles Barkhouse find a part of the Oak Island treasure?
24:05Well, we've got this strange and mysterious object.
24:06We cannot write this whole law.
24:07It remains a mystery, as even after sinking a 40-inch wide steel
24:10shaft down to the cavern.
24:11Going down.
24:12And numerous dive attempts, the shiny gold object has never been
24:15seen again, at least not yet.
24:45Over the past six seasons, numerous and often dangerous attempts
24:52have been made to get to the bottom of the infamous borehole
24:55known simply as 10X.
24:57But one such attempt stands above the rest.
25:00Number four.
25:02John Chatterton's dive made us all hold our breath
25:05in nervous anticipation.
25:07Sorry for the bad weather.
25:09Everything's going good.
25:10Everything's going good, in spite of the weather.
25:13The reason why today holds such promise is simply because of the
25:17skill set and the capabilities of John and his team.
25:21Howard's the dive supervisor.
25:23He's going to be coordinating everything.
25:25If anybody has a question, he's the guy to go to.
25:29And Howard will be in communication with me.
25:32OK, so the plan for the dive today, he's going to get in the basket.
25:36We're going to lower the basket to a water depth of 40 feet.
25:39Anybody have any questions?
25:41No.
25:42If we've got any problems, we'll solve them on the fly.
25:46And that's it.
25:47I'd say let's get wet, but we're already wet.
26:03When you talk to John, there's a gleam in his eye.
26:05He wants to go down to the bottom.
26:09He's going to go down to the bottom.
26:12The story leading up to this moment actually began back in the early 1970s.
26:18It was then that legendary Oak Island treasure hunter Dan Blankenship drilled the borehole some 180 feet east of the money pit, hoping to finally find the back door to the treasure.
26:32At an astounding depth of 225 feet, Dan was astonished by what he believed he saw, a wooden support beam, tunnels extending out in two directions, a possible treasure chest, and most incredibly, human remains.
26:49Unable to safely explore the 27-inch wide shaft, Dan used concrete and hollowed out railway cars to widen 10X to an incredible eight-foot diameter, down to a depth of 180 feet.
27:04But then, he ran out of money and was never able to prove whether or not he had found the answer to solving the Oak Island mystery.
27:12Here we go.
27:13However, in season three, Dan's partners Rick and Marty Lagina brought in world-renowned diver John Chatterton.
27:21Going down.
27:22To descend the shaft all the way to the bottom.
27:25It was a moment that was not only highly anticipated by the entire team, but also extremely dangerous, earning its place very close to the top of our list.
27:38All stop.
27:39All stop.
27:40All stop.
27:41Oh, no.
27:42After announcing that he was stuck somewhere down in the 27-inch wide part of the shaft,
27:54everyone's heart on the scene skipped a beat.
28:07When you hear the word stuck with a diver 100 and 200 feet below the surface, of course that strikes a chord.
28:17But then...
28:19John Chatterton reached the bottom of 10X and explored by only his sense of touch in the near-zero visibility conditions.
28:46Does it feel natural to you or does it feel like it could be possibly man-made?
28:51It feels a little crumbly.
28:53Get regular on the top.
28:55You had to crawl in or could you walk into it?
28:59No, definitely crawling.
29:01Okay, I think I'm about ready to head out again.
29:08Although John Chatterton wasn't able to locate a tunnel leading from 10X into the Money Pit, his brave descent into a pitch black cavern more than 225 feet deep underground was an extraordinary achievement, absolutely earning its place near the top of our list.
29:26Awesome.
29:27Over the past two centuries, generations of treasure hunters have focused almost all of their time and effort exploring and digging on the eastern end of Oak Island.
29:39That is, until Rick, Marty and their team came along, which brings us to number three on our list of Oak Island's top 10 moments.
29:49Number three, striking gold.
29:52Early on in season six...
29:54Go, lucky digger.
29:55...while searching on lot 21, a lot once owned by Daniel McGuinness, Rick Lagina and Gary Drake made what Gary likes to call a top pocket find.
30:06Still sounding good, still looking good.
30:13Oh, my gosh.
30:17It's another Bobby Dazzler.
30:19Look.
30:20That's a stone.
30:22It's a brooch.
30:23That's a bloody brooch.
30:25Look at that.
30:26That's a gem.
30:27The brooch would prove to become a major clue when Rick, Marty and Dave Blankenship had it examined by renowned gemologist Charles Lewton Brain at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary.
30:40Nice to meet you, sir.
30:41Hi, Marty.
30:42So, you know, we've got these two items that we found on Oak Island and we would really like to see what you can tell us about them.
30:49Huh.
30:50Might as well try our digital camera.
30:55Let's just see here.
30:57Okay, it's a brooch.
31:00The part I'm really interested in is the cord.
31:05That is the wire that surrounds the bezel.
31:09The bezel is what holds the stone in.
31:11And so if you look at this cord or wire, you can see that there's a spiral nature to it.
31:18You can see that there are these diagonal lines on here.
31:21This is not your ordinary old brooch found in the ground.
31:26That is a super ancient way of making wire.
31:31It's called block twisting.
31:33And this is the sign of ancient jewelry.
31:36This implies age.
31:38Mainly because of that wire.
31:40Mainly because of that wire.
31:42That wire is highly unusual.
31:45How old?
31:46I mean...
31:471340 is droplets.
31:48So prior to then, the only wires you've got are made in some manner like this.
31:52Potentially older than 1330.
31:54Older than 30.
31:55Yeah.
31:57Just like the lead cross, the team had verification of another find more than 700 years old.
32:05I'm gonna predict that it is pre-1840.
32:10But it was when Marty, his son Alex, and Craig Tester took the brooch to be scientifically tested at St. Mary's University in Halifax...
32:18Nice to see you, Krista.
32:19Welcome down to the microscope lab.
32:21...that it became number three on our list of the top ten.
32:26What's that?
32:27It's in really good condition.
32:28Have a look and we'll see what your machine says.
32:38It's a bright area?
32:39Yeah.
32:40Gold.
32:41Gold?
32:42Well, how about that?
32:43Gary can go do his gold dance.
32:45He found some gold.
32:46You've definitely struck gold.
32:48We struck gold.
32:49Here's the deal.
32:50We've found treasure on Oak Island.
32:51Yeah.
32:52We did.
32:53Woohoo!
32:54Woohoo!
32:55Woohoo!
32:56Woohoo!
32:57And we've proven it right here in this lab today.
32:58Excellent.
32:59So that's pretty cool.
33:00It's not bad.
33:01I mean, yeah.
33:02That's a pretty good day.
33:03The brooch that was found this year is motivating and exciting because it's a real piece of treasure.
33:12You just can't deny that.
33:14It's a piece of treasure.
33:16Now we need to bring in the mother lord.
33:19Yeah.
33:23The biggest moments from the past six seasons have come not only when the team makes a major find,
33:29but also when that find just might answer one or more of Rick Lagina's burning questions.
33:34Who?
33:35What?
33:36When?
33:37Where?
33:38Why?
33:39And how?
33:40Well, number two on our list, Finding the Cross, came during season five right here at Smith's Cove.
33:45When Rick and Gary Drayton made the incredible find of the lead cross.
33:56Good one here, Rick.
33:58It's good depth.
33:59It's saying ten inches.
34:03Woohoo!
34:04Woohoo!
34:05Woohoo!
34:06Woohoo!
34:07I don't see anything.
34:08I see something.
34:16Holy.
34:17Holy shamoly all right.
34:19It's a cross.
34:20That's a cross.
34:21Is it square hole?
34:22Yeah, right there.
34:23It's heavy too.
34:24Oh my gosh.
34:25I mean, that is an old, old cross.
34:26Gary was extremely excited.
34:27Sweet!
34:28More excited than anything he's ever found on the island.
34:29And mind you now, this year he's found coins from the late 1600s.
34:45Those finds pale in comparison to this one in terms of his excitement level.
34:49So, I'm excited because Gary's excited and that's the truth of it.
34:53Oh, it looks like it's lead.
34:54How old?
34:55I always ask this.
34:56But look at that.
34:57How old?
34:58That is, oh my gosh.
34:59That is, that's really old.
35:03How old?
35:06This is the type of thing I'd expect to find in Europe.
35:10When I first saw it, I thought that looks like medieval.
35:13A medieval cross.
35:14I mean, you know, I mean, this is old.
35:17This is really old.
35:18I don't hear it in your voice, but I don't.
35:21How old?
35:23I would say that it's somewhere in between 1200 and 1600.
35:30The lead cross proved to be the biggest find ever in the history of the Oak Island treasure hunt.
35:35Using a scientific testing method known as laser ablation, they proved that the lead from the cross came from a 14th century mine in the same region of southern France that Marty and Alex visited when they traveled to the Cathar Fortress in the town of Montségur.
35:53But the moment that ultimately made it to number two on our list was when Rick realized that the cross he was holding in his hand was eerily familiar.
36:02I've seen that shape before. I swear that'll tell the tale how old it is, that shape.
36:08Yeah.
36:09Where do you think you've seen it before?
36:12You know, when I was in France, I saw a carving like that in the Templar prison in Dome.
36:19While visiting a 14th century prison, where members of the Knights Templar had been held before their execution by King Philip IV, Rick, along with his nephews, Peter Frenetti and Alex Lagina, were shown a number of carvings made by Templar knights that resembled carvings found on and around Oak Island.
36:41Among them were triangles, a depiction of the tree of life, and of course, a cross.
36:54The carved cross was identical in design to the one that Rick and Gary had just found on Oak Island, offering further evidence that the Templars might in fact be connected to the Oak Island mystery.
37:04It was a moment that Rick Lagina and all of us on the island will never forget.
37:11With all the incredible moments from the past six years, can you guess what number one on our list of the top ten is?
37:19Well, here's a clue. It involves the same find from season one that was so huge for Marty Lagina.
37:26Number one, Dan's proof.
37:30It was such a major breakthrough for Rick, Marty and the team that they hurried straight over to Dan's, still covered in nasty muck and a layer of stench.
37:40Looks like you guys went swimming today.
37:43Swimming in mud.
37:45You got the evidence to prove it.
37:47Yeah, we do.
37:49It was a moment that defined their partnership.
37:52So we just brought something we want to show you.
37:55Okay.
37:56Wanna sit on?
37:57Looks like I'm gonna have to.
37:59That's cool.
38:00That's cool.
38:04Let's go.
38:05Makes a HotIN'
38:09Let's go.
38:17Let's go.
38:22when rick handed that coin to dan i knew it was a big deal for rick and i knew it was a big deal
38:39for dan it meant something yeah it meant something what do you think that's spanish i know
38:49that's the first thing i've held in my hands since i've been here almost 48 years that's why we came
39:05right here that's the first thing i have the real evidence you know i told you we were going to solve
39:11this that's just the start of it after nearly half a century of searching for the answers to
39:19the oak island mystery dan certainly made his share of major discoveries from the u-shaped structure
39:27at smith's cove to the incredible video evidence deep underground in 10x dan found substantial clues
39:35and even developed his own theory about who was behind it all it confirms a lot of things marty
39:43you know it definitely does confirm my suspicions that the spanish did it i've always said the
39:51spanish did it you know yeah up until now myself especially been uh operating on
39:59they had and uh you got to give us credit for persevering though oh yeah believing in something
40:05you believed i know you did sadly dan blankenship passed away in 2019 at the age of 95 but thanks
40:17to his and this team's efforts he got to hold something in his hands that validated all his hard
40:24work and faith and that makes this without a doubt the number one greatest moment so far
40:31great to see you dan yeah congratulations give me that too dan again parker good to see you
40:4010 unforgettable moments 10 reasons why the curse of oak island has captured the hearts of people
40:47all over the world but is this the end of great moments on oak island not by a long shot
40:54as long as rick marty and the fellowship of the dig keep searching there will be many more to come
