00:00loved her profession it was a calling for her to help people who were in the
00:05midst of crisis Sam had a way with people that was her passion a tragic
00:13discovery she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon a secret romance
00:21they asked me if I knew who the father of Samantha's baby was and I did not
00:27know a web of lies the motive was just really really crazy in this case to tell
00:33you who actually pulled the trigger but is it business was she killed because of
00:38her job or a killer relationship you tell me how do you forgive
00:57tenacious determined strong these are just some of the words used to describe
01:07Samantha Dean when Samantha's in sixth grade she writes in her journal that she
01:12wants to become a police officer so she can go out and help others it becomes her
01:17mission to make sure those in need feel safe but Samantha's mission is cut short
01:22when at 29 she's found dead miles from home and the horrific truth about what
01:29brought her promising life to an end shocks a city and rattles the law
01:35enforcement community
01:42it's 2 a.m. when Deputy Brian Reyes with the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office is
01:47performing a routine check of a vacant shopping center parking lot he first
01:53noticed that there was a black charger parked in this dumpster enclosure which
01:58piqued his interest that's not a very usual place to park a vehicle especially in
02:02the middle of the night
02:05as he gets closer he notices a body flying halfway out of the passenger side of the car
02:18covered in black plastic
02:20the victim appears deceased they determined they had a homicide
02:28first responders from the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 29 year old
02:47Samantha Dean what we learned in those early hours is that Samantha Dean worked in law enforcement and
02:56was a victim services counselor not that you don't give effort in all your cases but the law enforcement
03:02community it takes murder like this very seriously when it's one of their own that it's a victim
03:15from the moment she was born on May 12 1985 near military base in Nuremberg Germany
03:22Samantha Elizabeth Dean is full of surprises we were told the baby was going to be the boy we didn't
03:31realize it was a girl until she popped out and the doctor said oh you have a girl and it was three days
03:38later before we had a name for her right away Samantha just had that it factor I didn't want her to grow up
03:48you just wanted her to be around all the time in 1998 when I exit the military we moved to San Antonio Texas
03:57to pursue our dreams as a civilians this is the first video camera I've ever had and it's really neat bye see you later
04:09I met Sam when we were 15 we became great friends she just had an aura that everybody was attracted
04:18to her I was a homebody I didn't like to go out and she was the one person that could lure me out she
04:30was never that type of girl chasing boys she wasn't that person at least not that I was aware of
04:39we were giggly and you know all enamored with the boys but we wanted the best of them we knew at an
04:48early age we wanted to find the one but the one will have to wait Samantha's got more important things on
04:56her mind when she was in sixth grade she said she wanted to become a police officer when she told me
05:04that she wanted to be a police officer it was not a surprise because Sam has a way with people and
05:09speaking to people and de-escalating situations and just connecting with people and I knew that she
05:18would be amazing at it when she graduated in 2003 she settled on University of Texas in San Antonio
05:26but during her freshman year 18 year old Samantha starts to feel chronic and unexplained pain she was
05:35having some difficulty being able to really move her left arm and it started to get stiffer it got to
05:44the point where she couldn't move it anymore and we found out that she had sarcoma cancer in her left elbow
05:49she started chemo treatment and we did that for two and a half months she went in every day
05:59reporting live from
06:03methodist ambulatory surgical hospital this is my third operation on my elbow you see my pretty machine
06:13she had that fight in her it was going to be challenging but it was not a doubt in her mind
06:21that she was going to beat it and she does beat it with the cancer in remission samantha plans to
06:27fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a police officer but she faces another setback the lasting
06:33effects of the cancer and its treatment have left her with limited mobility in her left hand and elbow
06:39she's unable to meet the strict physical requirements necessary to join the force down but not out
06:47samantha looks for another way to serve her community samantha graduated in december of 2007 from utsa
06:59she still was thinking fbi something she wanted to go to new york to pursue a master's degree
07:07after graduating from john jay college with a master's degree in psychology and criminal justice
07:13samantha heads back to texas she applies for and is accepted to work as a volunteer at the austin police
07:20department in their victim's advocate unit the majority of the calls that we got were domestic violence
07:28sexual assault and death calls she would ride out in the city vehicle with me and we'd go to calls
07:34together as a victim's advocate as a victim's advocate she could be there with those individuals
07:42when they needed it in 2012 samantha's offered a full-time job at the kyle police department
07:49half an hour south of austin as their first victim services advocate samantha was there during the
07:57notifications of death of the family to help them bring comfort to the family to guide them through
08:05that difficult time in their lives samantha works at the kyle police department for just over two and a
08:11half years but now her dream is shattered cruelly taken away from her in the shadows of a dark vacant
08:19parking lot far from home she was shot three times with a small caliber weapon you can see there's a
08:28lot of blood that's pooled in the center console that looks like she had probably been shot in the
08:34driver's seat and then slumped over there was evidence that she was drug across the front passenger
08:40seat and then ultimately on the ground just outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle
08:45and there was no fingerprints or shell casing that was collected from the crime scene the absence of
08:52evidence suggests the killer or killers made an effort to clean up but what they left behind
08:59peaks investigators interest there was some marijuana placed in the vehicle that was sitting on top of
09:06the blood rather than blood being on top of it so it was obvious that that was placed down after the
09:10crime that occurred so it appeared that the crime scene was staged to kind of make it look like a
09:14drug deal had gone bad or something to that nature also they found in the center console an atm
09:20receipt that showed a withdrawal for 100 dollars earlier that same night and approximately 100
09:27in cash in the center console the atm receipt told us 9 36 pm she was at the valero gas station at
09:35william cannon i-35 and that was significant because it gave them a starting point to go back to that
09:41store and get surveillance video and what the investigators find next might provide valuable
09:48answers there was a phone found inside her vehicle that was her personal phone the initial thing was to
09:54get into that phone and figure out who she was communicating with and there is something else
10:00when examining samantha's body the investigators realize there is a second victim samantha it appeared was
10:09pregnant it's bad enough that you get a woman prime of her life senselessly murdered you got a baby
10:18that didn't even have the opportunity to live a life yet that was also taken one of the first things
10:25we want to do is determine you know who the father of that child is and where are they and what role
10:30does that person play in samantha's life we had a relationship based on six the thing about her job
10:38is that it put her in proximity to people who were often violent offenders my phone dinged and it said
10:49i got hurt i'm coming for you i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i remember thinking
10:59who is screaming like that and then i realized it was me
11:0629 year old samantha dean who was pregnant with her first child has been shot to death in a deserted
11:20parking lot and police have no idea why statistically most victims know their killer so investigators
11:28with the bastrop police department need to find out who the father of samantha's baby is
11:34for that they go to samantha's parents but first investigators have to break the unimaginable news
11:41that their daughter has been murdered when they notified me i didn't quite understand what they were
11:48saying did i just not hear them correctly because it didn't register right away i go to work wednesday
11:59morning two ladies from our human resource office area they come in and they're asking me to come upstairs
12:09we go up to one of the conference rooms i see my husband and then i saw a lady
12:19and she had on the same kind of clothing that sam would wear as an advocate
12:24all i remember is her saying sam's name and then i remember hearing murdered and i remember hearing
12:36screaming and i remember thinking who is screaming like that and then i realized it was me
12:51they asked me if i knew who the father of samantha's baby was and i did not know
13:02as transparent as sammy was she didn't want to talk about the father
13:12the only thing that i did know that he was a police officer
13:18samantha may not have told her parents who the father of her baby was
13:22but investigators are hoping she confided in friends or co-workers detectives had me come to
13:30the special investigations unit at austin police department to ask me questions and i told them
13:38sometime in august she showed up to the door i let her in and as soon as she walked through the threshold
13:45of the door she just started sobbing and told me that she was pregnant and she said she was embarrassed
13:54to tell me because i knew who the person was that she was pregnant by and it just immediately clicked
14:01for me that it had to be von tre clark because that's the only person we have in common
14:07i knew who it was i didn't have to ask it was von tre clark is a 33 year old police officer at the
14:18austin police department he and samantha met six years earlier when they were both employed at a
14:24pharmaceutical company it started as a friendship with them and just spurred into a relationship they
14:33got along really well but it wasn't something that was out in the open either because he was dating
14:40someone else as well she was very clear that it was not the situation that she wanted but she had been
14:49a cancer survivor and after the radiation and chemo she didn't know she'd have the opportunity to be
14:56pregnant again and so she was going to keep it and knowing clark i just thought he doesn't want her to
15:06do this because his girlfriend is going to find out that information was passed on to bastrop county
15:14and that's initially what spurred bastrop county to bring voluntary in and you work for the city of
15:20austin how long you've been with apd almost three years first and foremost my condolences uh i know
15:26you told me a little bit on the phone that she was carrying your baby so my condolences but with that
15:32said tell me how long have you known her i've known sam for six years maybe seven years we used to work
15:40together at a different company we didn't have a relationship like we didn't hang out we didn't date
15:44or anything we had a relationship based on sex von tre had been living with uh another woman and for
15:50several years they had a child together and we're also raising another child that von tre had had
15:55previously with another woman when we got pregnant um she told me she was in love with me i didn't i was
16:03well i didn't feel the same way we had an argument that at that point and kind of we stopped talking
16:08for a while and this happened the night before last can you remember what you were doing yeah probably
16:14eight eight eight thirty is probably about the time the kids go to bed so about nine or so nine
16:19thirty i left because in my current relationship we're going through problems so i left i went to
16:28the school that's we have a school right across the street chilled in my car walked around for a little
16:31bit and i ended up going to the uh police station what'd you do there i read a report about what time
16:38do you think you got there uh around 11 45 how long do you think you you guess you stayed there 30
16:46minutes 30 minutes what'd you do after that i went home bastrop county detectives work on corroborating
16:53von tre's alibi they pull surveillance cameras and entry records from the austin pd south station
17:00sure enough cameras catch von tre arriving around 12 11 a.m and leaving at 12 40 a.m but the hours
17:08between 9 p.m and midnight are completely unaccounted for investigators believe samantha was shot shortly
17:16after 10 p.m that's a pretty big window of time to be able to commit this crime since von tre is now
17:23connected to the investigation he is placed on paid administrative leave as standard procedure and when
17:29the press gets wind of the fact that a police officer might possibly be connected to samantha's
17:34case the story blows up tonight investigators are trying to figure out who murdered a member of the
17:41coyote police department she was an outstanding asset to our community her life was taken too soon
17:48this became a very intensely followed story in austin and to have a police officer now tied up
17:59in this huge investigation absolutely changed the scope of everything as media attention grows
18:08so does the pressure on law enforcement to solve the case by now investigators have been able to pull
18:14security footage from the valero gas station where samantha withdrew 100 at 9 36 p.m at the same time
18:23von tre Clark said he was taking a walk in his neighborhood the surveillance video showed she
18:29came into the store by herself she goes directly to the atm makes the cash withdrawal and immediately
18:35leaves the store the surveillance video doesn't offer any additional clues but five days after the
18:42murder samantha's phone records are now back from the crime lab we started going through a lot of the
18:47phone records and really starting to put the pieces together the data shows that while samantha was
18:53traveling to bastrop from austin she received a text from an unknown phone number that was the very first
18:59time we could find that she's ever communicated with that number investigators need to know who does that
19:04number belong to while the bastrop sheriff's office follows that lead stephanie burgess samantha's friend
19:12and fellow victims advocate at austin pd gets a startling text my phone dinged and i looked at it and
19:20it was a number i didn't know and it said i got her i'm coming for you i'll show you what a crisis is
19:32and i just felt my heart drop through my stomach and i just started shaking oh my god is there some
19:42killer out there targeting victim services counselors
19:52just five days after samantha dean's murder her friend and fellow victims counselor stephanie burgess
19:58receives a threatening text stephanie doesn't recognize the number but the message seems clear
20:04whoever killed samantha is now after her that message came to stephanie's personal number we want
20:13to know who would have had that number and how the person said that message would have got it i felt so
20:19scared and the chief at the time called me and told me that i needed to go somewhere safe that was not my
20:28own apartment stephanie goes into hiding and the texas rangers joined the case we were asked to join
20:35the case boston pd they wanted us involved so we could navigate those multiple jurisdictions the team
20:41of investigators now has to consider another motive for samantha's murder revenge the thing about her job
20:50is that it put her in proximity to people who were often violent offenders so was this in some way
20:59connected to her profession and law enforcement had she helped a victim of domestic violence flee
21:07a violent situation and was someone retaliating against her for that reason
21:12at this point investigators have two mysteries to solve who texted with samantha on the night of her
21:21murder and who sent the threatening text to stephanie five days later both texts were from different
21:28numbers but detectives have a hunch they're connected they start with the text that samantha received
21:35we obtained the point of purchase information from the cell service provider which indicated that phone
21:40was purchased at the walmart and stafford the morning of samantha's murder and then we obtained the
21:47time and date it was purchased from walmart and then obtained surveillance video of the person that
21:51purchased that phone we saw a black male wearing a houston cougars hoodie and gray sweatpants enter the
22:01walmart go to the phone section uh get the phone he then went to a register purchased the phone
22:07and then left the walmart in a white toyota car and we were able to obtain that license plate from the
22:12video as well the car is registered to a woman named kyla fisk so once we figure out who kyla fisk was
22:19we did a little research on her through social media and public databases of known associates saw she
22:25was in a relationship with a gentleman named kevin watson and kevin watson bears a striking resemblance to
22:30the man seen in the walmart video watson and kyla fisk both have prior arrests in houston for drug dealing
22:40they were on probation currently for a drug arrest they were selling narcotics so at this point we're
22:46trying to figure out how they're related to samantha do they know samantha in any kind of way and are they
22:52connected in any way to the marijuana found in samantha's car which detectives believe was placed in
22:58the vehicle after samantha was shot we definitely don't think she was out there to buy any drugs or
23:05do any kind of drug deal and when we see drug rifts it's involving cocaine methamphetamine something that
23:10has a significant street value and that further solidified us as this being a setup with a drug
23:17angle officially off the table the team of investigators still needs to determine how or if samantha's
23:24connected to kevin watson and kyla fisk they take a look at the burner phone's call logs once the phone
23:31was activated there was two phone calls placed one was made to kyle fisk which was wasn't surprising to
23:36us kevin watson and kyle's their relationship together but the second phone call was to voluntary clark
23:44police are blindsided why is a known drug dealer in contact with a law enforcement officer
23:50investigators subpoena both watson and clark's personal phone records and what they discover
23:57is stunning hundreds of texts and calls between vantre clark and kevin watson over a period of years
24:06we learned that they were very very close with each other they had spent time playing basketball
24:11together went to school together a matter of fact kevin's mom thought of vantre like a son they
24:16referred to each other's brothers and they had a very close relationship despite the
24:20obvious connection between clark and watson investigators decide not to bring either
24:26man in for questioning at this time everything's being done behind the scenes we don't want anybody
24:30to know that we're on to them yet get their guard up investigators next turn their focus to the second
24:37phone the one that sent stephanie burgess the threatening text it was purchased at a walmart in katie texas
24:4540 minutes from where the first phone was purchased a couple of detectives from austin police department
24:51went down there and obtained the purchase receipt for that phone and also the surveillance video
24:58of the purchase of that phone from the photograph of the two individuals buying the phone that day
25:04that one of them for sure was kevin watson looked like he shaved his beard off but other than that you
25:09could tell it was kevin watson now that we know kevin watson's involved in buying the phone that sent
25:15stephanie burgess the threatening text message and he's bought the phone that was used in the murder
25:20of samantha we've now connected kevin to both of those offenses and what about the second man could he be
25:28involved in making the threat to stephanie the detectives need to identify him then as we're reviewing
25:35the records for the first burner phone the one it was communicating with samantha on the night of the
25:40murder we see that it's also communicating with a third burner phone we realized that it was
25:45activated in austin near clark's residence so we definitely believe von trey clark was in possession
25:50of that phone
25:58investigators in the murder of samantha dean have used geolocation data to place a burner phone
26:04in the hands of von trey clark but the mystery only deepens from there so after reviewing the
26:10records for the phone that von trey clark had we saw where he was communicating with a guy named freddie
26:16smith von trey was in contact with freddie several times up to the murder on that burner phone we're
26:23like here we go again we got another guy to run down look at research and see what his connection is
26:28and all this and through that research investigators learned that freddie smith also has a burner phone
26:35they subpoena its records and discover that it too is communicating with clark and watson on the night
26:42of the murder and from the geolocation data each phone tracks from their individual residences to the
26:49same final location the deserted shopping mall in bastrop where samantha was shot to death everything
26:58fell into place what's more samantha dean's personal phone also travels from her home in austin to
27:05the parking lot in bastrop and she is not traveling alone the night of the murder of the burner phone that
27:13von trey had was geolocating off the same towers as samantha's phone
27:19which was uh indicative that he was in the car with samantha
27:23detectives feel confident that von trey clark kevin watson and freddie smith are all involved in
27:32some way with the murder of samantha dean but what they don't have is a smoking gun we've got a really
27:40good case on cell phones but obviously we know cell phones can't pull trigger and so we don't know who
27:46played what role in the murder at this point we're still at a point we're not ready to go
27:53do any interviews with any suspects we didn't want to spook them while the investigative team continues
27:58to gather evidence thousands of mourners line interstate 35 south as samantha's body is transported
28:05home from bastrop today we have the entire community of kyle that's come together here to celebrate
28:12samantha dean a police escort the body back to san antonio and people were over overpasses
28:23fire trucks police cars um people waving people crying literally in the thousands
28:32on february 13th kelvin and kimberly dean say their goodbyes to their daughter and their unborn
28:39granddaughter whom samantha had planned to name madeline there were people at a funeral that came
28:49that said that if it wasn't for her they wouldn't be here so um that's how i know that you know not
28:57only was she a great person but she went beyond the call she won't be remembered as a statistic she
29:04won't be thought of as kyle police department victim services coordinator whose life was taken
29:09she will be remembered as samantha dean friend and family
29:14samantha is buried with her daughter madeline rose dean while the father of her unborn child
29:21and his associates remain free investigators continue to peel back the complicated layers of samantha dean's
29:30case and soon they make another critical discovery the mysterious man who was with kevin watson
29:37on the day he purchased the phone that sent the threatening text to stephanie burgess has finally
29:43been identified his name is aaron williams and investigators traced the car he was driving
29:50to his in-laws once we identified aaron williams and started looking at uh his phone record you could
29:57see the communication with him and kevin watson on a pretty regular basis but they need more so
30:03investigators try a new approach they set up surveillance and a wiretack we did approve to
30:10go up on all the phones of entre clark kevin watson freddie smith and aaron williams it's all happening
30:17live so you're listening to phone calls and seeing text messages as they happen the problem is no one is
30:24talking we realized early on that they're using gaming systems to communicate uh so at that point
30:32we kind of devised a plan to get a court order to interrupt von trey's uh internet service to force
30:37them off the gaming system and on uh to their phones so we can monitor that communications
30:44to get them talking investigators use a tactic called tickling the wire tickling the wire basically means
30:51we've got to have some kind of initiating event to get them to start talking about the crime so in
30:55this case that initiating event was for apd to go down there and talk to aaron williams's mother and
31:01father-in-law about why their car was in bastrop on february the 8th which we believe would spark a
31:06conversation to kevin aaron williams immediately calls kevin watson and says we need to meet we can
31:13talk about something yeah from there it kind of kicked things off they've got kevin watson talking to
31:18some other people too about it i feel funny it's too much huh yeah man i don't know exactly what it
31:25is don't want to get caught up in the rap so you know how that go it worked pretty well i got him
31:31talking but he still needs somebody to break
31:39investigators in the murder of samantha dean catch a break while listening in on a wiretap
31:44of aaron williams and kevin watson in one conversation aaron anxiously tells kevin that
31:51they have to meet in person to discuss an important matter after that in-person meeting
31:56they later did talk on the phone about what kind of story they were going to give detectives if they
32:01came asking him about why he was in bastrop and then you learn a little bit about them from their
32:07conversations and it becomes pretty obvious that aaron williams is really no criminal and so
32:16ultimately that's who brent and i focused on the rangers agree it's time to start moving in
32:23they bring aaron williams in for questioning we quickly let him know that this is regards to a
32:31murder case and that's when aaron williams became very uncomfortable came very upset realizing that
32:40he had gotten himself into something that he probably shouldn't have but he still didn't
32:44want to give us any information the rangers are able to hit aaron williams with a charge called
32:50retaliation because he was present when kevin watson bought the phone that sent stephanie burgess
32:57the threatening text they hope a stint behind bars will give him time to consider his future
33:04and incentive to talk while aaron simmers in jail the surveillance finally pays off
33:10when rangers observe kevin watson showing up at freddie smith's house
33:17he's over there for a little while and they both get in the car and leave together
33:22and so we had a houston police department conduct a traffic stop
33:27on kevin watson and freddie smith after they left his house they found a fair amount of drugs in
33:32the vehicle they were both placed under arrest by houston police department for possession narcotics
33:37the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place but investigators still don't have enough to charge
33:43von trey clark with anything then a call comes in that changes everything
33:50we got a phone call from aaron williams the attorney advising that he wished to now
33:58tell us what he knew did he tell you he went to bastrop that night
34:03yes or no yes what did he say happened who went with him and what happened um freddie went and
34:11it's all right aaron you're doing the right thing he told me they went and uh he told me
34:25that they killed the girl did he tell you who who actually pulled the trigger no he didn't tell me
34:31who you said they yeah they went after they killed that girl
34:37aaron williams had told us about how von trey clark had gotten a girl pregnant in austin and
34:45she did not want to have an abortion and he didn't want her to have the baby and he needed this girl
34:49gone von trey was in a relationship so von trey did not want her to know about him getting
34:54samantha pregnant he was not going to be able to hide this any longer if she was going to seek
34:58child support and so kevin and freddie had been paid by von trey clark approximately five thousand

37:00murder just days later kevin watson is also charged with capital murder he decides to take a plea deal
37:08and tell all we learned that kevin watson essentially acted as an agent for von trey clark that kevin
37:17watson recruited freddie smith to come to austin and be the gunman that night on the night of february
37:253rd 2015 clark uses a false story to get samantha out of the house at 9 30 pm trey was telling her
37:34that he was trying to buy a tablet and so his thing was picking up the money for the tablet
37:40and that's why they were going to the atm they stop off at the valero where she withdraws 100
37:46but while samantha's in the store under the impression she's getting cash to buy a tablet
37:51von trey is in the car using samantha's phone to make it look like the cash is for a drug deal
37:59i didn't know clark was texting from her phone okay after samantha leaves the valero gas station
38:04she proceeds towards bastron once there von trey clark and samantha drive into a shopping center

38:20to show the tablet and collect the money then freddie aims his gun at the back of samantha's head
38:28he attempted to shoot samantha but the gun malfunctioned and when it didn't go off he was
38:33able to hide it fast enough and tell her hey i forgot the charger to the tablet i gotta i gotta
38:38leave and go get it and that gave him time to go fix the malfunction in the firearm according to
38:44watson it takes several minutes for freddie to fix the jammed gun then kevin drops freddie back off at
38:51samantha's car where he slides into the back seat kevin drops him back off he tells me about how he was
39:00in the back seat and he shot it twice bam bam and then trey wanted a gun and then he handed trey the gun
39:08and trey was he said something crazy and then shot her once when you say that
39:15that's not crazy any any idea what that would be something like you or something
39:24everything that kevin said seemed to line up with what our investigation showed
39:29when word gets back to vantre clark that watson flipped he's ready to make a deal
39:34to avoid the death penalty he pleads guilty on december 16th 2019 and is sentenced to life in
