00:00Sarah wanted to provide for her family and be better and do better she always was there anytime
00:12I needed her she was the world to me a missing mother she didn't show up to work and we got
00:20worried a gruesome discovery there was a body beside the van burn a tangled web of love we've
00:28got three suspects that Sarah has either had relationships with had kids with deceit who is
00:36telling us the truth and danger why was he back there with a gun all leading to did he get into
00:43a fit of rage did he get into it with Sarah a killer relationship I didn't tell her I loved her
00:51and that haunts me
00:58the Tennessee city of Humboldt in Gibson County is quintessential small-town America located between
01:12Nashville and Memphis it's an idyllic quiet place where everyone knows everyone so in the fall of
01:182004 when Sarah summer a 27 year old mother of three vanishes it triggers six days of turmoil which
01:27begins with a missing persons case ends with a deadly fire and cracks the foundations of this
01:34tight-knit community the late afternoon of September the 12th a call was received at 911 from an unknown
01:46man of a loud explosion in the area first responders from Humboldt and nearby towns rush to the location
01:56in the center of a cornfield at a local hangout called the hole they discover a minivan engulfed in flames
02:03when you arrive on a scene like this you never know what to expect naturally there's a vehicle there so
02:12you're smelling gas but then there's another unusual odor when you smell that smell it's a smell you'll
02:18never forget and that's the smell of decomposition there was a body beside the van burning
02:25fire department arrives on the scene they extinguish the fire lacking the resources to handle such a
02:35complex crime scene responding officers call in the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation we arrived around
02:43seven eight o'clock that evening and I was shocked actually to see the condition of the body the body
02:51was sort of face down with the chin resting on the running board of the sliding door of the minivan the
02:59legs out stretched the back was bowed it was severely burned and had been burned in a while the van was
03:09completely destroyed by fire but you could still tell the license plate number on it they ran the
03:15license plate and this van came back to an individual named Sarah summer she had been missing since the 6th of
03:23September this was the first solid lead they had which had now turned into a possible homicide
03:28it was September 6th my mother had called me because Sarah my little sister had dropped her
03:44three boys off over there then my mother called me later that evening she's like well Sarah hadn't got
03:48back yet that was extremely unusual she was not going to drop those boys off and not come back for
03:55those boys without telling us prior the next day we didn't hear nothing she didn't show up to work and
04:09we got worried we started calling her burn her phone line up started contacting all of her friends that
04:15we knew we knew you're finally to the point you just you have no idea what to do
04:19Kathy Sarah's mom came into the police department and wanted to file a report for a missing person
04:30Sarah didn't say she was going anywhere didn't say who she was going with
04:33so we gather as much information as we can
04:37we have the dispatchers issue Ebola that's all they could do
04:41they weren't that concerned yet and we kept trying to tell them over and over you know
04:46you really need to take this serious because she's not here and this is not her
04:50Sarah is born in 1977 to Kathy and Charles summer
05:05Charles is a registered nurse Kathy a homemaker and Sarah is the youngest of their two daughters
05:12Sarah was born just about two and a half years after I was
05:18it was always Sonia and Sarah Sonia and Sarah everywhere we went we were a pair
05:23she loved anything to do with dolls
05:27I stood in line for four and a half hours to get her a cabbage patch doll one year
05:33and she carried that all around
05:36but Charles and Kathy's marriage is rocky and when Sarah is three years old her parents divorce
05:44Kathy remarries and Sarah and her sister Sonia live with their mother and stepfather
05:50when Sarah reached high school it was harder for her
05:55Sarah was always very insecure about herself because she felt like she thought she wasn't pretty
06:00and she thought she wasn't worthy and you know she had those little girl dreams of Mr. Wright
06:05she was looking for yeah Mr. Perfect
06:08in high school Sarah casually dates but none of their relationships are serious
06:17then at age 17 in her senior year Sarah finds herself pregnant
06:23of course she was scared as any teenage girl would be terrified so now you just got to move on
06:30but while Sarah faces the situation head on the father-to-be isn't ready to become a dad
06:37it hurt Sarah that he was not there what's wrong with not just her but the child
06:43she just finally accepted it
06:46with a father out of the picture Sarah finishes high school in 1995
06:52six months after graduation she gives birth to her son Christopher
06:57she was a real good mother to him she loved him like everything
07:02so we were proud of her for all that
07:05I knew mama loved me she always was there anytime I needed her
07:10she'd just wrap her arm around me and we'd just watch whatever was on TV
07:14Sarah and Christopher find happiness in each other and the support of their family
07:19then two years later a new love enters their lives
07:23a man named Tim Henson
07:26I didn't think it was going to be serious at first
07:28but then she kept getting closer and closer
07:31Tim included Christopher in just about everything that they did
07:34that was another part that Sarah liked because he just accepted the fact
07:38that she had a child
07:39later that same year Tim and Sarah tie the knot
07:43and she and her son Chris move in
07:45Sarah and Tim have two boys together Shane and Adam
07:49she's now a happy mother of three
07:51but Sarah's newfound joy is short-lived
07:56less than a year after Adam is born
07:59Tim starts drinking heavily
08:01he can't hold down a job and physically takes his anger out on Sarah
08:06there was black eyes there was bruises there was cuts
08:09he had actually shoved her while she was pregnant
08:12you know hit her in the stomach
08:14things get so bad that Sarah files a restraining order against Tim
08:19and moves in with her mother
08:21five months later she musters the courage to divorce him
08:25and receives full custody of their two boys
08:28with Tim unable to provide any kind of child support
08:31the pressure falls on Sarah to take care of her young family
08:35Sarah she had a plan she was focused
08:41and she wanted to provide for her family and be better and do better
08:45when Sarah started working at McDonald's
08:50she realized that she could climb the corporate ladder
08:53she could become a store manager
08:55she was affording herself more opportunities to grow
08:59Sarah also starts dating again
09:03and in April 2004 she has a new boyfriend Clay Webb
09:08they had a great relationship from what I could tell
09:11they were always laughing cutting up having fun
09:14he was fun to be around
09:15he was kind of a big kid
09:18but just a few months later their relationship abruptly ends
09:25I didn't really find out about Sarah and Clay breaking up
09:28until just a ways after it had happened
09:31she just didn't tell me why
09:32regardless of the reasons
09:35Sarah stays focused on her goals
09:37and it pays off when she's promoted
09:39to assistant manager at McDonald's
09:42she's got goals for her and her boys at that point
09:46so I was very proud of it
09:47three months later and six days before a burning body is discovered
09:59Sarah goes missing
10:01and when she doesn't come home for over 48 hours
10:04the Humboldt police start investigating why
10:08so as law enforcement we always interview the family
10:11we always want to look at who had a problem with this person
10:16a past relationship
10:18so we have to look at those closest to her
10:21the investigators make a list of all of Sarah's former relationships
10:28over the last few years
10:30and immediately two names stand out
10:32her most recent boyfriend Clay Webb
10:35and ex-husband Tam Henson
10:37rumor mill going around town was that
10:41Tam Henson had kidnapped her or beat her
10:45or he was holding her against her will
10:46we knew there was a history of him choking her
10:49throwing items
10:50there was an order of protection that was issued a year prior
10:53he has an anger issue
10:56he's an alcoholic
10:57he's been abusive to her before
10:58Tim was under the influence at the time we made contact with him
11:08we did ask him when the last time it was that he talked to Sarah
11:13he said he had not talked to her in over a year
11:16he had told us he had never checked on the children
11:20so there's no reason for him to make contact with Sarah
11:23is he telling us the truth
11:25or is he under the influence so bad
11:26we need to come back and talk with him
11:28the investigators make a note to circle back to Tim
11:32then move on to her most recent ex-boyfriend
11:36Clay said he had not talked to Sarah in over a week
11:40and he wasn't for sure where she was
11:43Clay did say
11:44if we need to look anywhere
11:46we need to look at Tim Henson
11:47so that keyed us in back on Tim
11:50hey did we not get enough out of him
11:53this is starting to worry us a little bit
11:55four days pass
11:58and after checking with Sarah's friends
12:00family and co-workers
12:02worry turns to serious concern
12:05we don't have much to go on
12:07I mean
12:08nobody in the community has seen her
12:10nobody at work has seen her
12:12and I'm going
12:14are we going to start looking for a dead body
12:17law enforcement intensify their efforts
12:25they get permission to search Sarah's house
12:28for any clues to her whereabouts
12:30in the investigations like this
12:33we need to go visit their home
12:36we need to see
12:37if they may have left a note
12:39tell them where they were
12:41or who they were with
12:42so we went into the house
12:44and we started looking
12:46there's no sign of any kind of disturbance
12:52but there was a calendar that was located
12:55and on this calendar
12:59she had dates marked
13:01investigators go through the calendar
13:04date by date
13:05and one note catches their eye
13:08because of the way it's written
13:10it says back with Jason
13:12and with a smiley face
13:13that was on June the 18th
13:18three months prior to her disappearance
13:19that brings up the question of
13:22who is Jason
13:23is she with Jason
13:24which direction do we need to go
13:27to figure out where Sarah could be
13:29with yet another name to track down
13:31investigators are convinced
13:33that one of the men in Sarah's life
13:36knows where she is
13:37we've got three suspects
13:39that Sarah has either
13:41had relationships with
13:43had kids with
13:44she's been dating them
13:45it's time to
13:47start bringing these people in
13:49and interrogate
13:50did he get into a fit of rage
13:53did he get into it with Sarah
13:55we didn't know
13:56maybe the killer was still there
13:58she screamed
13:59this screen and only people
14:00who ever lost a child
14:02can scream
14:02is he still going to be there
14:05or is he just going to flee
14:07it's been four days
14:18since Sarah Summer
14:18was last seen
14:19dropping her kids off
14:20with her mother
14:21ex-husband Tim Henson
14:23and ex-boyfriend Clay Webb
14:25both claim
14:26they haven't seen
14:27or heard
14:28from the young mother of three
14:29but investigators
14:31searched Sarah's house
14:32and discovered
14:33the first name
14:34of another man
14:35Jason
14:36they check the name
14:39against their list
14:39of Sarah's recent relationships
14:41and get a hit
14:42but who is Jason
14:44and could he have
14:45anything to do
14:46with Sarah's disappearance
14:48we needed to talk to the family
14:55and the family said
14:57that Sarah is dating
14:58a man named Jason Sanders
14:59for a few weeks
15:00but it ended months prior
15:02to her disappearance
15:03Sarah knew about
15:13Jason Sanders
15:13from school
15:14Jason was handsome
15:16and he's very outgoing
15:18he could be very arrogant though
15:20and I guess that was part
15:21of the attraction
15:21because he was exciting
15:23but along with Jason's charm
15:25and good looks
15:26comes a controlling personality
15:28those around the couple
15:30observe that Sarah
15:31has difficulty
15:32standing up to him
15:34Jason was a very dominant person
15:36I think she just kind of
15:38fell into that role
15:39of being submissive
15:40Jason constantly needs cash
15:46and at one point
15:47Sarah suspects
15:49he's stealing from her
15:50Sarah had disclosed to me
15:52that Jason had actually
15:53stolen money
15:54from her checkbooks
15:55of course her working
15:56you know
15:57she's got to have that
15:58for her boys
15:59by April
16:01five months before
16:02she disappears
16:03Sarah's had enough
16:04and ends the relationship
16:06that's when she starts
16:08dating Clay Webb
16:09I realized that she was
16:11no longer seeing Jason
16:12because she had mentioned
16:13something about Clay
16:14so at that point
16:16I knew Jason
16:16was out of the picture
16:17or was he
16:19based on the calendar
16:21found in Sarah's house
16:22investigators suspect
16:24that Sarah dated Clay
16:25for two months
16:26then went back
16:28to Jason
16:28possibly
16:29in secret
16:31I didn't keep up
16:32with the relationships
16:33very well at that point
16:34because I thought
16:35she was just
16:35focusing right back
16:36on work
16:37keeping her life going
16:37keeping the boys going
16:39we start looking
16:48for Jason
16:49can't find him
16:50so we go to
16:51Jason's father's house
16:52Larry Sanders
16:53Larry told us
16:55that Jason
16:56was in Kansas City
16:57working
16:57and he would call Jason
16:59and tell Jason
17:00we wanted to talk to him
17:01but Larry Sanders
17:03is suspicious
17:04of why the police
17:05want to speak
17:05with Jason
17:06so badly
17:07and he has
17:08good reason
17:09Jason's father
17:11was concerned
17:12because there was
17:12an active warrant
17:13out for Jason
17:14where he had missed
17:15a DUI court case
17:16we said Larry
17:18we're not worried
17:18about him not showing
17:19up for the court date
17:20we just need to talk
17:22to Jason about Sarah
17:23about 8.30 or 9
17:29that night
17:30Jason calls
17:31and Jason says
17:32he's in Kansas City
17:34but he would come
17:35and talk to us
17:36once he got back
17:37in town
17:38he says
17:39he hasn't seen
17:40Sarah in a few weeks
17:41and last he knew
17:43Sarah was seeing
17:44Clay Webb
17:44by day 5
17:50in the missing persons
17:50case
17:51and with no signs
17:52of foul play
17:53detectives have
17:54to consider
17:55that Sarah Summer
17:56chose to disappear
17:58maybe she couldn't
17:59provide for her children
18:00maybe she decided
18:02to leave
18:02and she just
18:03don't want anybody
18:04to know
18:04I watched the news
18:09they were talking
18:11about how
18:12my mama
18:12had abandoned us
18:14she did not
18:15abandon us
18:16none of us
18:19know what to do
18:20the family
18:28is in limbo
18:29stuck between
18:30hope
18:30and despair
18:31then
18:32tragically
18:33six days
18:34after Sarah
18:35went missing
18:36the burning van
18:37is discovered
18:38on the outskirts
18:39of town
18:39we were going
18:42to operate
18:42as though
18:43it was Sarah Summer
18:44and as though
18:44we had a homicide
18:45the reason
18:47that we believe
18:49this is Sarah Summer
18:50is several factors
18:52we have a missing person
18:54we find the van
18:55that we know
18:56she's driving
18:57and it's in a local
18:58hangout
18:59and Sarah's local
19:00so she would know
19:01where that area is
19:03so you start
19:04putting this all together
19:05you know the remains
19:07that you're looking at
19:08is what's left
19:09of Sarah
19:09when investigators
19:13take a closer look
19:15at the body
19:15they discover
19:16horrific details
19:18it appeared to have
19:20been out there
19:21for days
19:21without notice
19:22when the body
19:24was rolled over
19:24you could see
19:25on the protected area
19:26where the fire
19:27couldn't burn the body
19:28maggot activity
19:29so you know
19:30this body's been here
19:31for a little bit
19:31we probably have
19:33someone that
19:34committed this
19:35homicide
19:36and they had
19:37returned to the same
19:38and then set the fire
19:40and it appears
19:42an ignitable liquid
19:43was probably
19:44poured on the body
19:45as well as the van
19:46it was heartbreaking
19:48it was one of the
19:50most gruesome scenes
19:51that I'd work
19:53this was a big deal
19:56for such a small town
19:57we started looking
20:02for evidence
20:03we'd found some car keys
20:05and some Budweiser
20:06beer bottles
20:07and beer cans
20:08we'd found the
20:09tire tread
20:09at the top
20:10of the hole
20:10they took a cast
20:11of that
20:12you do a grid search
20:14you start walking
20:15and you start looking
20:16for anything
20:17the search party
20:18combs every inch
20:19of the popular hangout
20:21but none of them
20:22are prepared
20:22for what they discover
20:24we find a
20:27male subject
20:28hiding in the woods
20:30who is this
20:33why are they here
20:34when we approach
20:36the subject
20:36we realize
20:37he has a gun
20:38just hours
20:49after discovering
20:50Sarah's torched van
20:51and body
20:52investigators draw
20:53their guns
20:54and move in
20:55on an armed suspect
20:56hiding behind a tree
20:57at the edge
20:58of the crime scene
20:59they order the man
21:00to drop his weapon
21:01and put his hands
21:02in the air
21:03why was he out there
21:09why was he back there
21:10with a gun
21:10we have a van on fire
21:12we have a body
21:13we don't know
21:14that that's not
21:15the person
21:15that committed
21:16this crime
21:17a lot of times
21:20people like to
21:21stay around
21:21and see what kind
21:22of crime
21:22they committed
21:23they like to
21:23watch the fire
21:24the first thing
21:27you're gonna do
21:28is disarm him
21:29once investigators
21:31neutralize the threat
21:32they ask the man
21:34to identify himself
21:35it actually
21:38it turns out
21:38that that was
21:39the 911 caller
21:40his name's
21:41Joe Tubbs
21:41this is his
21:43old family land
21:44why are you still
21:45hanging out here
21:46it was strange
21:47but he's cooperative
21:48we find out
21:50that he heard
21:51an explosion
21:52he run down
21:53to see what it was
21:54he told us
21:55that there was
21:56a dead body there
21:57so he run back home
21:59and got a gun
22:00he was scared
22:01and he waited
22:02after he called
22:03911
22:03to watch
22:05when asked
22:07if he knows
22:07who set the fire
22:08Tubbs claims
22:09that he doesn't
22:10but he does
22:11offer one thing
22:12that could
22:13be relevant
22:14he says
22:17that he
22:17spotted
22:18a red
22:19pickup truck
22:20that was
22:21driving by the road
22:22and going slow
22:23by the hole
22:24just a couple
22:25of hours
22:26prior to the
22:27explosion
22:27is it related
22:30to this crime
22:31or was it
22:32just somebody
22:33passing down
22:34the road
22:34inadvertently
22:35word travels
22:37fast in a small town
22:39and it's not long
22:40before Sarah's
22:41sister and father
22:42get wind of the discovery
22:44of the burned van
22:45and body
22:46we go speeding
22:51down the road
22:51my father and I
22:53finally come screeching
22:54up there
22:55my dad started screaming
22:59is it my daughter
23:00is it my daughter
23:00my father at that point
23:03he was beside himself
23:04it took several of them
23:06to physically
23:07drag him away
23:09like any father
23:11I would fight a mountain
23:12to get to my daughter
23:14but we had to stop him
23:16at all costs
23:17because
23:18it's imperative
23:19that that crime scene
23:20is exactly like
23:22we find it
23:23detectives now
23:25need to find
23:25Sarah's killer
23:26and three suspects
23:28crowd the top
23:28of their list
23:29ex-boyfriends
23:30Clay Webb
23:31and Jason Sanders
23:32and ex-husband
23:33Tim Henson
23:34investigators
23:35have already
23:36talked to Tim
23:37and they're waiting
23:38for Jason
23:38to return from Kansas
23:40but Clay Webb
23:42is the last
23:42of the three men
23:43to have spoken
23:44to Sarah
23:44just a week
23:46before she disappeared
23:47we know we need
23:50to talk to Clay Webb
23:51again
23:52when we talked
23:54to him
23:54he kind of had
23:55no emotions
23:56at all
23:57did he get into
23:59a fit of rage
24:00did he get into
24:01it with Sarah
24:01did he do this
24:03detectives bring
24:05Clay in for questioning
24:06he's cooperative
24:08but seemingly
24:09unaware
24:10of the gruesome
24:11discovery
24:11earlier in the day
24:13he tells us
24:16he hadn't seen Sarah
24:17they're not seeing
24:17each other right now
24:18that day
24:19that she was
24:20supposedly
24:20went missing
24:21on September 6th
24:23he had been drinking
24:24at home
24:25by himself
24:25we need to find out
24:27what is he driving
24:28Joe Tubbs
24:30has seen a red truck
24:31traveling
24:32kind of a slow pace
24:33going by
24:34the scene
24:35of the crime
24:35we asked him
24:38do you have
24:38a red truck
24:38do you have
24:39access to a red truck
24:40and he's like
24:41no
24:41I got a blue
24:42Chevy Blazer
24:43then
24:45the agents
24:46break the news
24:47we tell Clay
24:49what you don't
24:51understand
24:52is Sarah's gone
24:53Sarah's
24:54deceased
24:55it's been a murder
24:55at that point
24:58Clay broke down
24:59he was just
25:01emotionally upset
25:02and devastated
25:03we asked him
25:05if he would
25:05take a polygraph
25:06the next day
25:07and he said
25:08that he would
25:09we told him
25:11he was free
25:12to leave
25:12don't go anywhere
25:13we were gonna
25:14watch him
25:15investigators
25:19turn their attention
25:20to the other
25:21two men
25:21in Sarah's life
25:22her abusive
25:23ex-husband
25:24Tim Henson
25:24and ex-boyfriend
25:26Jason Sanders
25:27first
25:28they circle
25:29back to Tim
25:30and check
25:30on his alibi
25:31for the evening
25:32Sarah went missing
25:33he said
25:36I left home
25:38and I went up
25:38to the store
25:39and talked
25:40to a few people
25:41we had to
25:43corroborate
25:43what he was telling us
25:44we found somebody
25:46that could tell us
25:48they were with Tim
25:49at the store
25:49and they were talking
25:51so he's
25:52kind of put on
25:53the back burner
25:53which brings
25:55investigators
25:56back to Jason
25:57they have been
25:58waiting for him
25:59to return
26:00from Kansas City

26:10was staying
26:11at a house
26:12in Gibson
26:12roughly 10 miles

26:19had he ever been
26:20in Kansas City
26:21and the person

39:37didn't turn

39:38that
39:38something
39:39happened
39:40I think
39:40he got
39:40mad
39:41I think
39:41he killed
