Families of Colombians jailed in Venezuela block border bridge in protest

Relatives of Colombians detained in Venezuela block a key border crossing for a second day on Dec. 5, 2025, demanding the release of their loved ones held in Venezuelan prisons. The protesters gathered at the Simon Bolivar International Bridge, which connects Colombia and Venezuela, after months of unanswered requests to President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Families say the detainees were arrested arbitrarily and face charges they insist are unfounded. In October, eighteen Colombians were released and reunited with relatives at the Tienditas Bridge, but more than 20 remain behind bars in Venezuela, according to the families.
