Colombians block international bridge to demand release of relatives held in Venezuela

Relatives of Colombians arrested in Venezuela blocked a border crossing on Saturday to demand the freedom of their loved ones, a day after a Venezuelan opposition leader was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Protesters gathered at the Simon Bolivar International Bridge, on the border between Colombia's Norte de Santander department and San Antonio, in Tachira state, Colombian media reported.

They said their relatives have been "abducted" by the Venezuelan government, with some arrested following the July 28, 2024, elections on terrorism charges.

Relatives have denied the accusations and claim Venezuela has not followed due legal process, Colombian media reported.

Colombia's foreign minister, Rosa Villavicencio, said in early October that they were in negotiations with President Nicolas Maduro's government for the release of at least 40 Colombians arbitrarily detained, according to the Colombian outlet RCN.
