00:00Hello, hello, hello, hello!
00:02Good evening, everybody!
00:04You are so welcome to the show.
00:07Hey, we have got another great show for you tonight.
00:10I couldn't be happier if I was Lisa Riley
00:12singing Fish and Chips on I'm a Celebrity.
00:15That is very happy.
00:17Hey, great guest for you, singing for us later.
00:19Look over there, it's Kat Burns!
00:24She'll be performing her latest single,
00:26There's Just Something About Her.
00:28And we'll be reuniting Kat with an old friend tonight
00:32because first on my sofa,
00:34this comedian recently went from beloved National Treasure
00:37to beloved Two-Faced Murderer
00:39when he won the smash hit series of Celebrity Traitors.
00:42Now preparing for a brand new comedy tour,
00:45have I said too much?
00:46It's Alan Carr!
00:54Lovely to see you!
00:55Lovely to see you!
00:56Oh, you're doing a laugh, a laugh of honour.
00:58OK.
01:02He's an Emmy Award-winning comedian, writer and host
01:06who made his name on Saturday Night Live
01:08and now fronts the US talk show Late Night with Seth Meyers.
01:12It is Mr. Seth Meyers!
01:16Oh!
01:17Beautiful!
01:18Hello, sir!
01:19I'm the winner for you, Seth Alan.
01:21Alan Seth!
01:24At the age of 37, she became New Zealand's youngest female crime minister
01:29and led her nation through a terrorist attack and the global pandemic.
01:32Now, she tells her story in the new documentary, Prime Minister.
01:36Please welcome, Jacinda Ardern!
01:40Oh!
01:41So glittery, so show-busy!
01:46Welcome in!
01:48Seb, Alan, Jacinda!
01:50And she's the Oscar-backed and Emmy-winning star of Titanic,
01:56Mayor of East Town and festive favourite The Holiday.
01:59Now, she's directing as well as starring in the poignant Christmas drama
02:03Goodbye, Jude.
02:04It is a very warm welcome back to Kate Winslet!
02:08CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:18Come in!
02:23Hello, everybody!
02:25Hi!
02:26Hi!
02:27Hi!
02:28This is unlike you, Kate.
02:29Well, I normally come a bit business-y and play it safe
02:32and I thought, you know what, it's Graham, I'm 50, I look amazing.
02:36Go for it!
02:37Yeah!
02:42Is there a lot of talcum powder involved in this day?
02:44Actually, no.
02:45Slightly wishing there was.
02:46Oh, OK!
02:47To be honest.
02:48Yeah, getting it off, you'll definitely wish there had been.
02:49I think so.
02:50Peeling as well.
02:51So, welcome back to Kate.
02:53Welcome back to Alan.
02:55And for the first time, Seth and Jacinda.
02:57Lovely to see you both.
02:58That's right.
02:59Very good.
03:00You fulfilled your promise to me when you were a guest on my show.
03:02Somebody said I'd said that to you.
03:03Did I really say you...
03:04Oh, my God, you can't even remember the promise.
03:06No.
03:07You know, after you left the room, everybody said,
03:09he won't remember a word he said to you.
03:12That's true.
03:13Yeah.
03:14I'm glad I didn't break my promise.
03:15Obviously, I promised you'd be a guest on my show
03:17because I was a guest on your show.
03:18Yeah, and here we are.
03:19Here you are.
03:20I'm thrilled to be here.
03:21Well, no, we're delighted you're here.
03:22And Jacinda, gorgeous to see you.
03:24Well, do you know what?
03:25It's just lovely to have a New Zealander on the sofa
03:28rather than on the red chair telling a vile story.
03:31I will admit that when your producer called,
03:33I did clarify which seat I would be in.
03:36LAUGHTER
03:37Yeah.
03:38It feels like it's part of national service in New Zealand.
03:41You must go abroad and tell a story about cheating yourself.
03:43When you leave, we check your passport.
03:45We check that you've got a good set of yarns.
03:48But it's something about New Zealanders.
03:50They do tell a good yarn.
03:52They really do.
03:53And, you know, they're shameless as well.
03:56There's that.
03:57And, Kate, there's a kind of New Zealand connection
04:00because you started your film career in New Zealand.
04:03Yes, I did.
04:04I did.
04:05The first film I ever did when I was 17 years old
04:07was filmed in New Zealand directed by Peter Jackson.
04:09We were just backstage saying we're going to end up
04:11talking about Peter Jackson.
04:12Well, we are because before politics came a-call in,
04:16you tried to work with Peter Jackson in New Zealand.
04:18I guess technically I did.
04:20I auditioned for...
04:21Did you actually?
04:22I did.
04:23Brilliant!
04:24I did.
04:25Half of New Zealand auditioned just to be...
04:28And half of New Zealand starred except for me.
04:31I did.
04:32What was it?
04:33Too tall?
04:34What was the problem?
04:35That's what I told myself.
04:36I auditioned to be an extra as a hobbit.
04:39LAUGHTER
04:40Because I lived, I grew up quite close to Hobbiton
04:45where they did all the filming.
04:46It's not a real place.
04:47It is.
04:48LAUGHTER
04:49You just believe it exists.
04:50I also believe it exists.
04:51Well, you're wrong.
04:52I know.
04:53I think it would have been fun if there was just one tall hobbit
04:57in the background.
04:58LAUGHTER
04:59As I recall, they had a five-foot-seven,
05:01little, you know, ruler against the doorway.
05:05And as I walked in, I just...
05:07Yeah.
05:08A little bit of limbo.
05:09I did a little limbo and then I got as far as the forms.
05:13And I do remember they asked,
05:15can you ride a horse bareback?
05:18And can you joust?
05:20Oh.
05:21And I could ride bareback because New Zealand.
05:24But the jousting I fell shy on.
05:26Also, I don't remember any jousting in that film.
05:28There wasn't.
05:29LAUGHTER
05:30Obviously, nobody...
05:32Everyone went, no.
05:33They needed at least two.
05:36Yeah.
05:37Now, Alan, I have to say huge congratulations on Celebrity Traders.
05:41Oh.
05:42I mean, it was amazing.
05:43CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
05:44There you are.
05:45CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
05:46I love that picture.
05:47I love it.
05:48I did some extra filming for it and they went,
05:52Oh, Alan.
05:53Do the face.
05:54When I put...
05:55Dude, that's my face.
05:56That's not a face.
05:57LAUGHTER
05:58Do the face.
05:59LAUGHTER
06:00And I knew because I watched the first episode
06:02and my phone was pinging and like, you know,
06:04when you're in the middle aisle at Lidl,
06:06when you're going to Greg's for the last sausage roll.
06:09I was being...
06:10LAUGHTER
06:11Yeah, manipulated.
06:12And I was saying, you know, you're on television a lot.
06:16Mm.
06:17And so you kind of think, I am known.
06:19But then, being the star of the biggest show,
06:23the most talked about show, it must feel different.
06:26Yeah, I mean, people are going,
06:27Oh, Alan, isn't he funny?
06:28I've been on telly for 25 years.
06:30LAUGHTER
06:31I must have been awful.
06:32LAUGHTER
06:33But you know the funny thing and they never kept it in.
06:36And I just felt really proud,
06:38just like outwitting all these clever people.
06:40And Stephen Fry was at the round table and he went,
06:43Who can the traitors be?
06:46Now, remember the Cambridge spies.
06:48They were flamboyant, they were camp, they were out there.
06:51But no-one spotted them.
06:52And I was obviously going,
06:53Mm, I know.
06:54LAUGHTER
06:59And are you tired of it yet?
07:01Or are you still...
07:02Sick of it.
07:03Well, you say sick of it.
07:05Oh, I know what you're doing.
07:06Yeah, we've got a clip of you out and about in Soho.
07:09Oh, please don't talk to me about celebrity traitors.
07:11LAUGHTER
07:16When it pulls back, he's even got the lamp.
07:18LAUGHTER
07:28Listen, we've got lots to talk about tonight.
07:30Let's get started with Kate Winslet's new movie.
07:32It is called Goodbye June and it's in select UK cinemas
07:35from the 12th of December and on Netflix from Christmas Eve.
07:39And this is a proper Winslet production.
07:42You star and you direct.
07:44But I think the most fascinating thing is that your son...
07:47Yes.
07:48..wrote this.
07:49And what strikes me is it's not a story you imagine
07:51a 19-year-old guy would want to write.
07:55No.
07:56So, my wonderful son, Joe, when he was 19 years old,
08:00he applied to a screenwriting course
08:02at the National Film and Television School.
08:04Look, there he is. He's so sweet.
08:05And he has always been very passionate
08:07and really good at writing
08:10and it's been a big part of his creativity.
08:12But that didn't necessarily mean
08:13that he was going to be able to write a screenplay.
08:15Yeah.
08:16So, he did this six-month intensive course
08:18and he was encouraged by a fantastic tutor
08:21to just write from the heart.
08:23And the most significant thing that had happened in his life
08:26was the loss of his grandmother when he was 13, my mum.
08:29And he was just so struck and moved by how we all came together for her
08:35and because we all came from this one woman.
08:38And so, he used that just as a loose inspirational backdrop
08:42and created a fictional story
08:44about a messy, complex, fictional family set at Christmas time.
08:49And so, it's really a story about how a family do come together
08:53against sort of all odds in many ways
08:56because there are lots of family dynamics at play
08:59that are quite challenging
09:01and they have to make it OK
09:03so they can make it good for this woman to leave them all behind
09:07knowing that they're all going to be all right.
09:09And it was just an extraordinary experience.
09:12And he'd written this script and he handed it to me
09:13and he was like, oh, you know, I've written this thing
09:15and it's probably not very good.
09:18Maybe you'll just read it.
09:20And then lie if you think it's crap, you know.
09:22And I read it and it was very much not crap.
09:25Yeah.
09:26And I said, well, you've written a film and we're going to make it.
09:30And he's like, no, Mum, don't do... No.
09:33Don't do that mum thing.
09:36And I said, no, this is what we're going to do.
09:39He worked on it some more and Netflix showed some interest
09:42and we're like, oh, my God, it's real.
09:44And I suddenly realised I couldn't let it go.
09:46And so, here I am, 50 years old, and I'm now a female director.
09:50And I'm very proud. Well done, you. Very good.
09:52APPLAUSE
09:55Well, the clip we have is you breaking the news about your mother's illness
10:00to one of your sisters, played by Toni Collette.
10:02Toni Collette, yeah.
10:03APPLAUSE
10:05You mentioned some of the other people in Andrew Risberg, Johnny Flynn, Timothy Spall.
10:15Timothy Spall, yeah.
10:16Dame Helen Mirren, I hear she had some reservations or some doubts.
10:20So, it all went through proper channels and agents
10:23and I spoke to her on the phone and I told her the story
10:25and I said it was written by my wonderful son
10:27and I was going to direct it and she was listening and listening
10:31and she said, darling, I do have to stop you
10:33because, actually, I've got two personal rules.
10:35I will not play someone with dementia and I won't play someone
10:38who has got cancer.
10:40And I said, OK, absolutely fine, totally understand that, which I did.
10:44And I said, there's no need, I won't send you the script.
10:46She said, no, no, do send it, it does sound rather special.
10:49A week later, I get an email, she says, I'll break my rule.
10:52I'd love to support you.
10:54This is a wonderful, wonderful project.
10:56We've got Helen Mirren to be an author.
10:58And she's great in the film, she really is amazing.
11:01She's wonderful, yeah.
11:02And I suppose, as a director, you know, if you're directing people
11:04like Dame Helen Mirren, you know, that must make your job
11:07kind of easier, but then, as you say...
11:09Did I shit myself is what you're saying.
11:11In a ditch in New Zealand.
11:13There's a red chair waiting for you.
11:16Let's not get on to poo.
11:17You always get me on to poo on this show, Brent.
11:19Come on, back in the room, back in the room.
11:21Well, no, the grandchildren.
11:23There's a lot of very young grandchildren.
11:25Yes.
11:26I mean, directing them must be like sort of herding cats.
11:29Oh, directing children is the greatest joy.
11:32There's this thing of never work with children and animals.
11:35Working with children is wonderful because children,
11:38children bring the joy.
11:39And I also have a theory about kids.
11:42Unless they are incredibly, incredibly gifted,
11:44actually you can't teach children to act,
11:47but you can just show them how to be by creating an environment
11:50that feels really safe, really playful and encouraging.
11:53They were encouraged not to learn their lines.
11:55They were encouraged to make lots and lots of juicy mistakes.
11:58And I would sometimes say to them things like,
12:00now you see that hospital bed over there?
12:02I've hidden something in that bed and your job in this part of the story
12:05is to just find what I've hidden in there.
12:07Haven't hidden a thing.
12:08The children never knew that we were rolling cameras.
12:11And so they were completely natural all of the time.
12:14We would just use hand signals and it was just amazing.
12:17And they loved it and they didn't want it to finish.
12:20And working with children, I mean, as you say,
12:22a lot of people say working with children is difficult.
12:24Jacinda, tell us when you discovered you were going to have a baby.
12:31The precise moment? The bathroom?
12:34Well, in New Zealand, election night, it's not always clear
12:42whether or not you have been successful.
12:44So in 2017, I somewhat unexpectedly became leader of my party,
12:49campaigned hard and on election night,
12:52didn't know whether or not we'd managed to clinch government.
12:56So we went into a period of negotiations
12:58and they take about two weeks, typically.
13:00I was about three days shy of those talks concluding
13:04and finding out if I was the Prime Minister of New Zealand
13:08when I found out I was pregnant.
13:11Is that actually true?
13:12That's actually true.
13:13Oh, my God.
13:14You're even more amazing.
13:16I'm really glad you've gone there
13:18because you could say that's terrible planning.
13:21It was, it was.
13:23But women, we just get on with it, don't we?
13:25Come on.
13:26That's right.
13:27That's right.
13:28And it was just like that.
13:29You just had to take every day as it came
13:30because then three days later, live on the 6pm news,
13:33the minor party we were negotiating with
13:35declared that I would be the Prime Minister.
13:37And it was only me and my husband that knew
13:39that I'd do it while having a baby.
13:41So even when you were being...
13:42Oh, my God, she is amazing!
13:44You are so amazing!
13:47When you were being...
13:49Well, I could probably add,
13:50he wasn't actually my husband at the time either,
13:52so that's...
13:53Me too!
13:54Amazing!
13:55I misheard and I thought you said
13:57it wasn't even my husband.
14:00Funny story.
14:01Yeah, clearly.
14:02So it was awkward.
14:03Yeah, it was awkward.
14:04Hilarious.
14:05But you weren't able to tell people
14:09by the time you were being sworn in.
14:10No.
14:11No, no.
14:12And at that point,
14:13by the time I was being sworn in
14:16and we had been a very official regal ceremony
14:19at Parliament to open up Parliament
14:22and the Governor-General comes in
14:24and gives a speech from the throne.
14:26And for that moment,
14:27she faces all of Parliament
14:29and then I sit next to her on this side facing out,
14:33the Leader of the Opposition here,
14:34the entire Judiciary,
14:36Leaders of the Armed Forces,
14:38very, very regal.
14:41And the entire time,
14:43I'm thinking,
14:44I'm absolutely going to throw up.
14:46And I'm clocking where my exits are.
14:49I even started thinking,
14:51would anyone believe I just had a bad kebab?
14:57But thankfully,
14:58thankfully I got through
14:59and I got through 20 weeks
15:00without telling people.
15:03Wow, that's amazing.
15:04A lot of flowy blouses.
15:06And because Seth,
15:09your wife,
15:10it wasn't morning sickness,
15:11but your wedding day was nearly spoiled.
15:13Yeah, she had food poisoning
15:15and we were at our rehearsal dinner
15:19and then she felt terrible
15:20and she said,
15:21I don't feel well.
15:22And I said,
15:23trust me,
15:24it's just wedding jitters.
15:25That thing when,
15:26like,
15:27a man with no experience
15:28just is very certain
15:29of what's happening.
15:31Having gone to zero days
15:32of medical school,
15:33I'm like,
15:34trust me,
15:35it's just wedding jitters.
15:36You're very nervous about marrying me.
15:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:38And you have every right to be.
15:40No, but she's like,
15:41I think I have food poisoning.
15:42I'm like,
15:43I promise you,
15:44it's just jitters,
15:45it's wedding jitters.
15:46And then, you know,
15:47we did sleep in separate beds
15:48at different places
15:49the night before our wedding
15:50as per tradition.
15:51I called her,
15:52I'm like,
15:53so how are you doing?
15:54She's like,
15:55I am in the emergency room.
15:56I do have food poisoning.
15:57But it was the one thing
15:59that was so lovely
16:01is that we had,
16:02she really wanted to do
16:03a rehearsed first dance
16:04and we're both really
16:05terrible dancers.
16:06And we had like,
16:07gone to a whole like,
16:08dance class
16:09with a,
16:10you know,
16:11personal instructor.
16:12And even the instructor
16:13who started by saying,
16:14look, anyone can be a dancer
16:15as long as you're in love.
16:16And at the end of the first hour
16:17was like,
16:18hum.
16:19And I remember like,
16:22the night of,
16:23you know,
16:24at the wedding,
16:25cause she did tough it out
16:26and you know,
16:27it was on an IV
16:28and she rallied
16:29the way women do.
16:30And she goes,
16:31I just don't think
16:32we can do the first dance.
16:33And I remember being like,
16:34oh, thank God.
16:35Thank God you ate
16:36a bad oyster.
16:38Cause Alan,
16:39where were you?
16:40Was it Mexico?
16:41I got Montezuma's revenge.
16:42Have you heard that?
16:43Yeah.
16:44Oh my God.
16:45What did you do?
16:46What did you do to Montezuma?
16:47I missed it.
16:48It was so bad.
16:49And this sounds like a made up story,
16:51but it's true.
16:52Have you heard of Palenque
16:53where all the Inca monuments are?
16:54I felt,
16:55oh my God,
16:56I'm going to ship myself.
16:58And then I ran and got some water.
17:00And as I came out the bushes,
17:02there was a marathon there
17:04and a woman ran past,
17:05took my bottle of water
17:06and tipped it over her bed.
17:08She was one of those people.
17:10Yeah.
17:11Oh no.
17:12I was so dehydrated.
17:14And can I say,
17:15Hotel Capri in Acapulco,
17:17they refuse to give me more toilet paper.
17:20Oh!
17:21Oh no.
17:22No, Mr. Khan.
17:23No, Mr. Khan.
17:24No, please.
17:25Indeed.
17:26Do you remember that finger boy?
17:27Cause it was,
17:28do you remember the finger boys?
17:29The finger bus is coming.
17:30The finger boys.
17:31I think we're saying the finger boys.
17:33The finger boys.
17:34You're the one.
17:35You're the one.
17:36Use this.
17:37I remember just laying next to the,
17:39next to the toilet and it was coming out both ends
17:41and I was just staring in.
17:42How could it get worse?
17:43And then this party boat came round.
17:44The finger boys are coming.
17:45Fuck you.
17:47Pete,
17:48we must also remind everybody that,
17:50the finger boys are coming.
17:51The finger boys are coming.
17:52Fuck you.
18:01Kate,
18:02we must also remind everybody that we'll be seeing you soon in,
18:05is the third installment of Avatar.
18:07Correct.
18:08Yes.
18:09This one's called Fire and Ash.
18:10I know.
18:11It doesn't look anything like me.
18:12Every time I see myself and I'm like,
18:14oh,
18:15that is actually me.
18:16No.
18:17But they do make you go and do it.
18:18Yes.
18:19Yes.
18:20Absolutely.
18:21But you can tell it's me from my top lip,
18:22I think.
18:23And because they've kept my beauty mark,
18:25which is nice.
18:26I mean,
18:27it's not animation.
18:28It's proper motion capture.
18:29I'm no holding breath underwater.
18:31No, there was quite a lot of that as well still.
18:33Oh, really?
18:34And there was a bit of underwater fighting in this one.
18:36But I can't really say anything.
18:37No.
18:38Yeah.
18:39You're going to have to see it.
18:40Well, people can find out on the 19th of December.
18:43Avatar, Fire and Ash is on the 19th December.
18:45And don't forget Kate's film Goodbye June.
18:47That is in cinemas from next Friday.
18:49Very good.
18:50Now,
18:51Jacinda Ardern brings us a truly extraordinary documentary
18:59about her time in office.
19:01It's filmed over seven years.
19:03It's called Prime Minister and it's out in cinemas today.
19:06And before we talk about it, here's just a taste of the trailer.
19:10Wow.
19:11And it obviously turned into this amazing story.
19:20But as you said there, you know, you didn't know what was coming.
19:22No.
19:23So when you started filming this at the beginning, all those years ago,
19:26what did you think the film was going to be?
19:29Not this.
19:30That's for sure.
19:32My now husband is a broadcaster.
19:35And so when he was in close proximity to all of these things suddenly happening,
19:40he thought, well, I should capture this.
19:43And I think only he could have, you know, helped create what it now is
19:49because I would never have otherwise let someone film me as consistently in my pyjamas
19:55or my bathrobe or at home and behind the scenes.
20:00And it's created, I hope, you know, a story that shows what it's like to lead.
20:05And I hope also a story that says that you can lead differently
20:09than perhaps the way we see in the world today.
20:12Yeah.
20:13I mean, after that, there are times when you're quite tetchy.
20:15There are times when you wish Clarke would stop.
20:17You make that sound like that doesn't happen often.
20:19It's the bulk of the footage.
20:22Yeah.
20:23And that's because we never had any intention about what would happen with the footage.
20:26You know, I was doing, in New Zealand, we have this great project
20:30where archivists call politicians and interview them
20:33and they've been doing it for decades.
20:35So I was recording these interviews and that was another reason
20:38he thought, well, I'll put some footage in as well,
20:40but without a clear idea of what would happen with it.
20:43Yeah.
20:44And I think that was positive too because otherwise I would,
20:46I don't think I would have been as open otherwise.
20:49Yeah.
20:50And so obviously the thing that kind of brought you to global attention
20:52was your response to COVID where you shut the borders, the quarantine,
20:56you got it down to zero cases.
20:57Yeah.
20:58And initially, obviously incredibly popular in New Zealand,
21:00you had this landslide election victory.
21:02Yes.
21:03Yeah, we did.
21:042020, it was almost, the election then was almost like a,
21:07like an election in the middle of a, of a war of sorts.
21:10That's how it felt in some ways.
21:12And so it was an unprecedented, um, victory,
21:16but it never felt like victory.
21:17I kind of thought, okay, people want us to keep going.
21:19And so we did, but it got harder.
21:21Yeah.
21:22I mean, we were certainly aware of what New Zealand was doing here.
21:24In America, were they aware of?
21:26Very much so.
21:27I, you know, people were lucky enough.
21:29I think everybody wanted to go there, you know,
21:32that was the place everybody wanted to be.
21:34And, uh, yeah, I mean, certainly we were jealous anytime,
21:37you know, you saw a ticker that there was a country with zero cases.
21:40That seemed like a job well done.
21:42You know, the New Zealand immigration, New Zealand website,
21:45after a couple of particular elections in the U.S. has crashed.
21:50I would imagine.
21:51Yeah, people are looking into it.
21:52Everybody was like, are they doing, can I be an extra?
21:54Are you still looking for a hobbit?
21:56Um, so it began, it began very well.
22:00And people in New Zealand were happy about what you were doing.
22:02And then as time went on, cracks began to appear.
22:05We've got a second clip from the documentary.
22:15I mean, the answer might be obvious, but why was that comment so annoying?
22:19You know, because at that time, of course, we were focused on both.
22:22And our view was that, uh, you know, a response on COVID
22:25that focused on keeping people alive was also the best response
22:28for the economy as well.
22:30Um, I should add, I'm not a violent person.
22:33Uh, and, and we did get through.
22:37And so many of the things that they predicted may happen,
22:39we managed to prevent.
22:40Yeah.
22:41It was hard, but I still feel proud of that.
22:43And negative voices began to get louder.
22:45And there is still this very kind of vociferous group in New Zealand
22:48who feel very strongly about you.
22:50Uh, what went wrong?
22:52What, what, what was the tipping point?
22:54Well, I think, you know, one thing yet again, of course,
22:57we all take responsibility for our own time in, in politics and in, in office.
23:01And I, so I say this, this next thing not to, to diminish that,
23:05but I think we have seen politics globally shift gears.
23:09Uh, and I think we have, uh, seen politics, you know,
23:13carry a lot more grievance from individuals.
23:15And it's, and it's in some ways become more violent and aggressive.
23:18So, you know, I don't think it was just any one leader that it's experienced that shift.
23:23It has shifted.
23:24Uh, and yet in amongst all of that, I do think we're in a moment in time.
23:28And I think in response to that moment in time,
23:31my plea is for people to not give up on an expectation that politics can be better.
23:36Uh, expect decency in politics, expect empathy and kindness in your politics.
23:42And I do think that we'll return to that as well.
23:44I hope that bitterness never comes to the stage.
23:46Yeah.
23:47Yeah.
23:48And, yeah.
23:49And, and, Jacinda, are you worried that this documentary,
23:56anyone watching it will think, dear God, I'm never going into politics.
23:59I do get asked the question, would you ever recommend it to a young person?
24:04Absolutely, I would.
24:05And, you know, look, the documentary captures the big moments.
24:09Yeah.
24:10But there was so much joy in between.
24:12So much joy.
24:13Uh, what other job if you're, you know, if you're, um, a do-gooder,
24:18um, like I can be sometimes, where you see a problem in the world
24:21and you've got the power to do something about it,
24:23what other job do you get that gift?
24:25So, I would absolutely recommend, uh, politics to, to good people,
24:30and we need more good people in there, so.
24:33Don't shy away.
24:34And will you go...
24:35Don't shy away.
24:36Are you going to go back into politics?
24:37No.
24:38No.
24:39I mean...
24:40It's a great job.
24:42Do as I say.
24:43No, no, no.
24:44Do as I say.
24:45To be fair, I did it for 15 years.
24:48OK, fair enough.
24:49You started very young.
24:50Yeah, thank you.
24:51How young were you when you got into politics?
24:53I was, well, when I went into Parliament, I was 28.
24:55Wow.
24:56Yeah.
24:57So, I feel like I did, I did my shift.
24:58All right, all right.
24:59And now it's for the next generation.
25:01Well, listen, it is a fascinating watch.
25:04It really, really is.
25:05Cindy's documentary, Prime Minister, is in cinemas now.
25:09OK.
25:10Right.
25:14We turn to Mr Seth Meyers.
25:15Oh, thank you.
25:16The award-winning host of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
25:19You can see it here in the UK on weekends on CNBC.
25:24So, based on that, you don't watch it.
25:27Well, I...
25:28CNBC.
25:29CNBC.
25:30This can't be right.
25:31CNBC.
25:32CNBC.
25:33CNBC.
25:34CNBC.
25:35I was thinking he sounds like a children's channel.
25:38Yeah.
25:39Well, thanks for the support, Graham.
25:41It's also available on YouTube.
25:43Yeah, yeah.
25:44That's easier, yeah.
25:45Or if you go to America, you can be on it.
25:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:47Perfect.
25:48Worked out for you.
25:49It's a celebrity talk show.
25:52It is.
25:53It is a celebrity talk show, like this.
25:54But once a year, Seth Meyers, you break your booking policy.
25:58Oh, yes, I have my...
25:59Well, once a year on Thanksgiving, it's very hard to book, obviously, on Thanksgiving.
26:03And so, when I started my show, I started with my parents and my brother are on every year.
26:08And it's very lovely.
26:09But then this year, we went a little bit further and I had my children on the show, who are young.
26:14They're nine, seven, and four.
26:16Wow.
26:17And I did not tell them they were going to be on the show.
26:20I gave them no warning because I thought they would get stressed.
26:22They were actually in the building to take their Christmas card photo.
26:25And I just sort of low-key said, let's just have three microphones ready.
26:28And we pre-taped it a week early.
26:30But after our first guest that night was Cynthia Erivo.
26:34And the kids had finished their photo.
26:36And I go, just come out.
26:37Daddy's going to ask you some questions.
26:38And it was six minutes.
26:41It's the most white-knuckle interview I've ever done.
26:44We've got a little clip.
26:45Here's Seth and the Meyer children.
26:47Yeah.
26:48So huge.
26:49Yeah.
26:50You see, children bring the joy.
26:53That's true.
26:54Children bring the joy.
26:55My oldest was the one who was the most, I think, had the most anxiety about doing it.
26:59And as we walked off, he just, like, took my arm.
27:01He goes, that was great.
27:02We should do it again soon.
27:04Thank you very much.
27:05And they just, like, got the bug.
27:07Is that the son who thinks he's going to inherit the show?
27:09Yeah.
27:10My son said to me once, he goes, Dad, I have a question.
27:12I said, what's your question?
27:13He said, when you die, do I get your show?
27:16And I'm like, based on the diarrhea answer, your sister gets the show.
27:21And I said, before the talk show, in America, you were very famous because of, of course,
27:26Saturday Night Live.
27:27Yeah.
27:28Yeah.
27:29There you are.
27:30There you are.
27:31My friend Amy Poehler.
27:32Amy Poehler.
27:33It was on when I was on the show.
27:34Oh, my God.
27:35Can I just say, when I was on, it was absolutely terrifying.
27:37I think it's terrifying for everybody.
27:38Am I allowed to quickly tell the story?
27:40Yeah.
27:41Even though this is totally unplanned?
27:42No, go.
27:43When I was on, it was the week after Ashley Simpson was done for lip syncing, right?
27:48Yes.
27:49I'm then on with Eminem, OK?
27:51I was doing publicity for a film called Finding Neverland at the time.
27:54And Johnny Depp and I had to miss the Wednesday rehearsal because we had to go to Chicago and
27:59talk to Oprah.
28:00And I'm thinking, oh, my God, what's the opening monologue going to be?
28:02I get to Wednesday night, come back from the Oprah thing.
28:04Still, they're like, well, we're just, you know, trying to figure it out.
28:07I'm like, just please tell me.
28:09It's, you know, it's a couple of days away, just what you're going to have me do.
28:13The next day, I go in and they're like, can you sing?
28:16And I said, a little, you know, ish, kind of.
28:19Do you dance?
28:20I'm like, I mean, yeah.
28:21Like, do you tap dance?
28:22I'm like, yeah, yeah, I do it.
28:23They're like, perfect.
28:24I'm like, so what's the opening monologue?
28:26They're like, we'll get back to you.
28:27I'm like, oh, my God.
28:28Now what's happening to me?
28:29This is absolutely terrible.
28:31They gave me 24 hours to learn.
28:33Nothing's impossible.
28:34I have found for women.
28:36I'm tap dancing and singing fully live the week after the whole Ashley Simpson thing.
28:41And also, I have to say something else, and this is a story I've never, never told.
28:45Eminem asked me to shave his bottom.
28:47There's always a muck.
28:50There's always like a poo bum fiend for me when I come on this show.
28:54Was it with a hand-held razor?
28:55Well, he did.
28:56He said, would you shave my butt?
28:57And I said, I'm sorry, I don't do personal grooming.
29:00Like, what?
29:01I'm not going to go with a bick and get your crackler.
29:04Honestly, that's my, never told that story before ever in my life in public.
29:10There you go.
29:11And can I say?
29:13Should have said yes.
29:15Well, the door is open.
29:16No!
29:17Should have said yes.
29:18No, no, no, no.
29:19Once she said no, I did say yes.
29:21No, you did not do that.
29:24I was early in the show.
29:25I would do anything.
29:27Was, was that tip, is that typical that hosts get stuff really late?
29:31Yes.
29:32It speaks to the legacy of the show that people keep sort of opting into the, the terrifying week that it is.
29:37But I think if you were, you know, if we didn't have kind of a little bit of fear,
29:40I think like even you, like we wouldn't, we wouldn't do any of this because I think the fear motivates you.
29:45Why are you looking at me like that?
29:47I don't know what you're talking about.
29:48He looks terrifying.
29:49Look at the terror, look at the terror in his eyes.
29:52I think you, you know, it motivates you.
29:55I lost fear in about 1997.
29:58We did have a, we used to say like whenever a host wasn't nervous, we knew the show was about to be a disaster.
30:05Hello.
30:06We won.
30:07Honestly.
30:08Exhibit A.
30:10I was married, I was married to Sam Mendes at the time, Joe's dad, and I said to him,
30:14please don't, please don't come.
30:15Just, just, just don't.
30:17It's really fine.
30:18I don't need you to come.
30:19He's like, no, okay, fine.
30:20He bloody well came.
30:21I walked through the doors at the back and I go like this.
30:25And all I see is Sam sat there going.
30:27I'm about to tap dance and say, oh my God, it was really horrifying actually.
30:34It was horrifying.
30:35And your connection with SNL continues because you do a podcast.
30:38Yes.
30:39The, yeah.
30:40Yes, with Andy Samberg, Kate's co-star in Lee.
30:43Oh, yes.
30:44Because you, yes.
30:45It's old Andy.
30:46Yeah, he's wonderful.
30:47He was in Lee with you.
30:48Yes, he was indeed.
30:49He's a great guy.
30:50Andy Samberg, is he your friend?
30:52He's one of my oldest, dearest friends, yeah.
30:54But what's the thing, and I don't want to make you sad, but I know your dog died.
30:59Yeah, my dog, 14 years old, frisbee.
31:01Yeah.
31:02And Andy Samberg, he hated that dog.
31:05Yeah.
31:06So, he hated my dog and he met my dog when she was a puppy.
31:11And he said on the day he met her, she's an ugly rat dog.
31:14And then every single time he came on my show, he basically would just say,
31:18how's frisbee that piece of shit?
31:20No.
31:21He would love to say that.
31:22Yeah, no.
31:23Look, he's a bad guy.
31:24But he basically doubled down and doubled down.
31:27I mean, having your kids on, I guess.
31:30Yeah.
31:31But the dog, I will be honest, the dog was not as electric as the kids.
31:37But it was like, Andy leaned into the-
31:42He's not even looking at you.
31:43No.
31:44Yeah, no, frisbee wasn't a good desk.
31:48But he really just doubled down on the comedy of hating my dog.
31:51And then I kept saying like, you know, this dog is 13 years old.
31:55And do you think you can weather the storm of hating a dog that recently passed?
31:59And he goes, I'm going to ride it out.
32:01And then I will say when frisbee passed away, I called up Andy and I'm like,
32:05well, that awkward day has come.
32:06And he's like, I'm really sorry.
32:07How are your kids?
32:08I'm like, everybody's okay.
32:09He's like, okay, I am going to still publicly say she was a rat dog.
32:14And the New York Times, it was the-
32:16I mean, I have it framed because the New York Times wrote an article that said,
32:19Seth Meyers' dog and Andy Samberg's nemesis passes away.
32:24And I'm like, I cannot believe the most famous thing about my dog is that you hated her.
32:28Because Alan, you've got a new dog.
32:31Yes, yes, I've got a rescue dog and she's completely deaf.
32:36And she was meant to be a guard dog and of course she's dumped and she's deaf.
32:40So they gave me a lead which says, I am deaf on it.
32:43So I'm walking around the park and people are going, what's her breed?
32:50And I know the dog's there.
32:53And I start mouthing the dog.
32:58She's got like a bright collar because she's got no recall.
33:01She's got bells.
33:02It's like taking a UFO for a walk.
33:05She's glowing all around the park.
33:07I don't know how I would react differently knowing a dog is deaf as a person just walking past you in a park.
33:14That's deaf for cheese, for dogs.
33:16Oh, okay.
33:17What?
33:18That's what the woman said, cheese.
33:21That's deaf, that woman said that's deaf, the deaf dog, cheese.
33:25Okay.
33:26That's deaf for God.
33:27Yeah.
33:28That's all you would say to your dog is cheese.
33:30Is that to send her out to the store?
33:32Cheese.
33:33Also it seems like if the dog wants cheese they would need to sign it to you.
33:39Look, it's a new dog, don't give me stress.
33:43I like that's the one word.
33:47I know.
33:48I give you cheese.
33:50You can work out the rest of yourself.
33:52There you go.
33:53Be fine.
33:54Seth, it is so great to have you on the couch.
33:57I'm so happy to be here.
33:58Don't forget, you can watch Late Night with Seth Meyers weekends on CNBC.
34:02Oh, wow.
34:03You know.
34:04You're on it.
34:05I'm on it now.
34:06You know.
34:07Yeah.
34:08I'm on it now.
34:09I'm on it now.
34:10I'm on it now.
34:11Well, Alan Carr is back on the road for his new tour.
34:14It's called Have I Said Too Much?
34:17But we should say, tickets are on sale, I think, today.
34:20Yes.
34:21But it'll be a while before they can go.
34:24Yes, 2027.
34:26I'm a slow writer.
34:29I'm a slow writer.
34:30Do you know what I was going to call the show?
34:32National Traitor.
34:34Ooh.
34:35But, you know, I've got to stop milking it.
34:39I've got to let it go, ain't I?
34:41If I die, I'll be like, oh, look, there's that bloke who wore that cloak.
34:45That's what they're going to say.
34:47So, you know.
34:48Better than being Andy Samberg's nemesis.
34:50Yeah.
34:51Now, your last tour to go all over the world, did you end up in New Zealand?
34:56Yes, New Zealand, Australia.
34:58Now, what's that hotel in New Zealand which you can bungee jump off the top?
35:03Oh, that's in...
35:04Oh, it's in Auckland.
35:05It's in Auckland.
35:06It would have been...
35:07Was it the Sky Tower?
35:08Yes, they can bungee jump off the top of the hotel.
35:11I'm there unpacking.
35:13I'm seeing people screaming.
35:15Ow!
35:17Ow!
35:18And then I see them come back and I'm like, how shit is this hotel?
35:22My God, I wanted a double bed.
35:26So, yeah.
35:29I mean, I always stay there.
35:31Maybe I see the Sky Tower?
35:32Yes, yes, yeah.
35:33I always go everywhere and, um...
35:36Yeah, I love it.
35:37I love it.
35:38There's no theme.
35:39There's a little bit about me being single but traitor stuff and stuff.
35:42I never have themes.
35:43I just...
35:44When my notebook is full of jokes, I just go on tour.
35:46I just do it every three years.
35:47I love it.
35:48I just love the freedom of it all.
35:49Yeah.
35:50Obviously, people will want you to talk about celebrity traitors.
35:53Mm-hmm.
35:54And were you, no offence, but were you as surprised as everyone else when you won?
36:00When I laughed in their face, I'm a faithful!
36:07I really thought when I go round that table, they're all just going to say, Alan, Alan, Alan.
36:12Yes.
36:13But they didn't.
36:14Are they stupid?
36:15Are they so stupid?
36:17And then I started crying because it was Nick Muhammad's face.
36:20He was like, we got this, we got this.
36:23And I'm like, no, I've got this.
36:25Have any of you seen this, the celebrity traitors?
36:29I've not seen this season, no.
36:31I saw the eight-minute sizzle reel.
36:33Me too, and I saw Celia Emery fart.
36:36Oh, my God.
36:37I was changed to her.
36:38I couldn't move.
36:43And we have to talk about Paloma, because she did not find it funny.
36:47No.
36:48No.
36:49Has she got over it?
36:50She had, and I saw her yesterday.
36:52We did some silly sketches and stuff like that.
36:54But, you know, like I said to her, I said, it's a game, it's called the traitors.
36:58It's like going on, like, you know, what's it called, naked attraction and saying,
37:02what, I've got to take my knickers off?
37:06We've got a picture of you and Paloma last night.
37:08Oh, wow.
37:09Oh.
37:10Oh, my God.
37:11I think I know who you're being.
37:12I'm so excited.
37:13I could not get that foundation off.
37:18We are friends.
37:22That's just smiling.
37:23It's Claudia Winkleman.
37:24Great.
37:25You know what?
37:26I had a feeling.
37:27I've got a question.
37:29How do they, as a TV show, how do they inform you that it's going to be you before the show?
37:36How does that all happen?
37:37Oh, no.
37:38You sit there.
37:39Okay, I'll show you, yeah.
37:40Go on.
37:41Oh, my God.
37:42I'm doing the action.
37:43You're blindfolded.
37:44This is Claudia.
37:45Yeah, blindfolded.
37:46She's so light on her feet.
37:48Yes.
37:49Like a cart horse.
37:50Yes.
37:51Did you not nearly have a heart attack?
37:53Well, you clearly haven't seen it.
37:54I went.
37:55I nearly chewed from my lip with panic.
37:56You already have a really cheap white wine.
37:57And do you really not know before that moment at all?
38:00No.
38:01No, and you don't know who he is and then you go into the turret and you go and there was
38:19Jonathan Ross there in Cat.
38:21And then I watched it back.
38:22I didn't realise how loud I was.
38:24Because I'd done my first murder and I said to Jonathan, I've done it.
38:30Do you realise how loud I am?
38:35Inside voice.
38:36I think we need a new hitman.
38:40There will be loads for you to talk about in your new show, so get writing it.
38:45A reminder, tickets for Alan's upcoming tour of I Said Too Much are on sale now.
38:51Hey, it is time for music and this Mercury Prize nominated singer and songwriter also murdered her way to the final of Celebrity Traitors.
38:58Here performing There's Just Something About Her.
39:01It is Cat Burns.
39:02Come on over to Cat.
39:04Thank you so much.
39:08Just gorgeous.
39:09Thank you very much.
39:10You know Alan.
39:12That's Seth.
39:13The cinder cake.
39:14This is Cat.
39:15I love you.
39:16I love you.
39:17Oh, very carefully.
39:19Congratulations.
39:20That sounded so good live.
39:23Thank you very much.
39:24That is the single There's Just Something About Her and that's from a new album, How To Be Human.
39:30Yeah.
39:31Which is out now, right?
39:32Yeah.
39:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:34And you talked about this album and saying it is about heartbreak, but you didn't want it to be a sad album.
39:39No, I mean, the album is about grief and heartbreak.
39:42I lost my grandad last spring and I think I wanted to showcase the first year of what grief can look like.
39:50And I remember watching a video of Andrew Garfield and he said that grief is just love with no home.
39:56And I just thought that was really beautiful and I was like, I need to make a project based on that.
40:02And then that's how it came to be.
40:03So it's sad, but it's also hopeful at the same time.
40:06I saw that Andrew Garfield, it was on, that was on Stephen Colbert, was it?
40:09Yeah.
40:10In America, on the American talk show.
40:11Yeah.
40:12So, here you are together, Cat and Alan.
40:15And then, I feel bad, I feel bad talking about celebrities again.
40:20I feel like I'm torturing you three.
40:23You're kind of like, oh, dear God.
40:24Alan did say, please don't bring it up again.
40:27Maybe just one more time.
40:29There's a cloak behind the sofa.
40:34So, that moment when you both voted for Jonathan to be banished, had you talked about that beforehand, the two of you?
40:44Well, I think I was running with the big dog theory, so I was like, if I don't...
40:49The fucking big dog theory, Jesus.
40:51Yeah.
40:52Once Stephen was gone, I was like to Jonathan, I'm going to have to do you, and he was like, I know.
40:57So, it was...
40:58I got to say something, but I think it was probably a shock that you did it.
41:02I didn't know what I was doing.
41:04LAUGHTER
41:05I didn't know.
41:06I was just pleased I got the name spelt right.
41:08Yeah.
41:09I mean, really.
41:10It was such a bad advertisement for strategy.
41:12LAUGHTER
41:13And they were sitting there going, these traitors are so clever, you know, the way...
41:17We were just like...
41:18We didn't know what was going on.
41:19We didn't know what was going on.
41:20We didn't know what was going on, but, yeah.
41:22Uh, Kat, you were going on tour.
41:24I am in April.
41:25Wow, so soon, unlike your friend.
41:28LAUGHTER
41:31You buy tickets and remember you've got them.
41:33LAUGHTER
41:35So, next spring?
41:36Yeah.
41:37And some of the tickets are gone or about to be gone?
41:39Almost.
41:40So get your tickets now.
41:41Yes!
41:42Uh, Kat, good luck with the tour.
41:44Thank you very much for being here.
