00:00Mayor of Easttown and festive favourite The Holiday.
00:03Now, she's directing as well as starring in the poignant Christmas drama Goodbye June.
00:08It is a very warm welcome back to Kate Winslet!
00:12APPLAUSE
00:16Can I make it in?
00:22Come in!
00:28Hello, everybody. Hi.
00:31This is unlike you, Kate.
00:33Well, I normally come a bit business-y and play it safe,
00:36and I thought, you know what, it's Graham, I'm 50, I look amazing.
00:40Go for it. Yeah!
00:45Is there a lot of talcum powder involved in this dress?
00:48Actually, no. Slightly wishing there was.
00:50OK. To be honest.
00:51Yeah, getting it off, you'll definitely wish there had been.
00:53I think so.
00:55So, welcome back, Kate. Welcome back to Alan.
00:59And a first time, Seth and Jacinda.
01:01Lovely to see you both. Yeah.
01:03You fulfilled your promise to me when you were a guest on my show.
01:06Somebody said I'd said that to you. Did I really say you...?
01:09Oh, my God, you can't even remember the promise, you know.
01:11No, yeah.
01:12You know, after you left the room,
01:13everybody said he won't remember a word he said to you.
01:16That's true, yeah.
01:17But, no, I'm glad I didn't break my promise.
01:19Yeah.
01:20Obviously, I promised you'd be a guest on my show,
01:21because I was a guest on your show.
01:22Yeah, and here we are.
01:23Here you are. I'm thrilled.
01:24I'm thrilled to be here.
01:25Well, no, we're delighted you're here.
01:26And, Jacinda, gorgeous to see you.
01:28Well, do you know what?
01:29It's just lovely to have a New Zealander on the sofa,
01:31rather than on the red chair telling a vile story.
01:34I will admit that when your producer called,
01:37I did clarify which seat I would be in.
01:40Yeah.
01:42It feels like it's part of national service in New Zealand.
01:45You must go abroad and tell a story about shitting yourself.
01:47When you leave, we check your passport.
01:49We check that you've got a good set of yarns.
01:51But it's something about New Zealanders.
01:54They do tell a good yarn.
01:56They really do.
01:57And, you know, they're shameless as well.
02:00There's that.
02:01And, Kate, there's a kind of New Zealand connection,
02:04because you started your film career in New Zealand.
02:07Yes, I did.
02:08I did.
02:09The first film I ever did when I was 17 years old was filmed
02:12in New Zealand, directed by Peter Jackson.
02:14We were just backstage saying,
02:15we're going to end up talking about Peter Jackson.
02:17Well, we are.
02:18Because before politics came a-call in,
02:20you tried to work with Peter Jackson, didn't you, Jacinda?
02:23I guess, technically, I did.
02:24I auditioned for...
02:25Did you actually?
02:26I did.
02:27Brilliant!
02:29I did.
02:30Half of New Zealand auditioned, just to be...
02:32And half of New Zealand starred, except for me.
02:35I did.
02:36What was it?
02:37Too tall?
02:38What was the problem?
02:39That's what I told myself.
02:40I auditioned to be an extra as a hobbit.
02:43Oh.
02:44Because I lived, I grew up quite close to Hobbiton,
02:49where they did all the filming.
02:50It's not a real place.
02:51It is.
02:52You seem to just believe it exists.
02:54I also believe it exists.
02:55Well, you're wrong.
02:56I know.
02:57I think it would have been fun if there was just one tall hobbit
03:01in the background.
03:02As I recall, they had a five foot seven, you know, ruler against the doorway.
03:10And as I walked in, I just...
03:12Yeah.
03:13A little bit of limbo.
03:15A little limbo.
03:16I did a little limbo.
03:17And then I got as far as the forms.
03:18And I do remember they asked, can you ride a horse bareback?
03:22And can you joust?
03:24Oh.
03:25And I could ride bareback, because New Zealand.
03:28But the jousting I fell shy on.
03:30I don't remember any jousting in that film.
03:32There wasn't.
03:33Obviously, nobody, everyone went, no.
03:37They needed at least two.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Now, Alan, I have to say, huge congratulations on Celebrity Traitors.
03:45Oh.
03:46I mean, it was amazing.
03:47There you are.
03:48I love that picture.
03:51I love it.
03:53I did some extra filming for it, and they went,
03:56Oh, Alan, do the face.
03:58When I put the...
03:59Dude, that's my face.
04:00That's not a face.
04:01Do the face.
04:03And I knew, because I watched the first episode,
04:06and my phone was pinging, and like, you know,
04:08when you're in the middle aisle at Lidl,
04:10when you're going to Gregg's for the last sausage roll.
04:13I was thinking, yeah, manipulate it.
04:17And I was thinking about it's that thing, you know,
04:19you're on television a lot, and so you kind of think,
04:22I am known.
04:23But then, being the star of the biggest show,
04:27the most talked about show, it must feel different.
04:30Yeah, I mean, people go, Oh, Alan, isn't he funny?
04:32I've been on telly for 25 years.
04:34That must have been awful.
04:36But you know the funny thing, and they never kept it in.
04:40And I just felt really proud, just like, outwitting
04:43all these clever people.
04:44And Stephen Fry was at the round table, and he went,
04:47Who can the traitors be?
04:50Now, remember the Cambridge spies?
04:52They were flamboyant, they were camp, they were out there,
04:55but no-one spotted them.
04:56And I was obviously going, hmm, I know.
05:02And are you tired of it yet, or are you still...?
05:05Sick of it.
05:06Well, you say sick of it.
05:08Oh, I know what you're doing.
05:10Yeah, we've got a clip of you out and about in Soho.
05:12Oh, please don't talk to me about celebrity traitors.
05:15Oh, no!
05:16LAUGHTER
05:17Fuck you, people!
05:19We'll see, he's even got the lamp.
05:22LAUGHTER
05:32We've got lots to talk about tonight.
05:33Let's get started with Kate Winslet's new movie.
05:35It is called Goodbye June.
05:37And it's in select UK cinemas from the 12th of December
05:40and on Netflix from Christmas Eve.
05:43And this is a proper Winslet production.
05:46You star and you direct, but I think the most fascinating thing
05:49is that your son...
05:51Yes. ..wrote this.
05:52And what strikes me is it's not a story you imagine
05:55a 19-year-old guy would want to write.
05:59No.
06:00So my wonderful son, Joe, when he was 19 years old,
06:04he applied to a screenwriting course
06:06at the National Film and Television School.
06:08Look, there he is. He's so sweet.
06:09And he has always been very passionate
06:11and really good at writing,
06:14and it's been a big part of his creativity.
06:16But that didn't necessarily mean that he was going to be able
06:18to write a screenplay.
06:19Yeah.
06:20So he did this six-month intensive course
06:22and he was encouraged by a fantastic tutor
06:25to just write from the heart.
06:27And the most significant thing that had happened in his life
06:30was the loss of his grandmother when he was 13, my mum.
06:33And he was just so struck and moved by how we all came together
06:38for her and because we all came from this one woman.
06:42And so he used that just as a loose inspirational backdrop
06:46and created a fictional story about a messy, complex,
06:50fictional family set at Christmas time.
06:53And so it's really a story about how a family do come together
06:57against sort of all odds in many ways because there are lots
07:01of family dynamics at play that are quite challenging
07:05and they have to make it okay so they can make it good
07:09for this woman to leave them all behind,
07:11knowing that they're all going to be all right.
07:13And it was just an extraordinary experience.
07:16And he'd written this script and he handed it to me
07:17and he was like, oh, you know, I've written this thing
07:19and it's probably not very good.
07:22Maybe you'll just read it and then lie if you think it's crap,
07:25you know.
07:26And I read it and it was very much not crap.
07:29Yeah.
07:30And I said, well, you've written a film and we're going to make it.
07:34And he's like, no, mum, don't do...
07:36No.
07:37Don't do that mum thing.
07:40And I said, no, this is what we're going to do.
07:43He worked on it some more and Netflix showed some interest
07:46and we're like, oh, my God, it's real.
07:48And I suddenly realised I couldn't let it go.
07:50And so here I am, 50 years old, and I'm now a female director.
07:54And I'm very proud.
07:55Well done, you.
07:56Very good.
07:57APPLAUSE
07:59Well, the clip we have is you breaking the news
08:03about your mother's illness to one of your sisters,
08:06played by Toni Collette.
08:07Toni Collette, yeah.
08:08Hi.
08:09I'm actually teaching my holistic dance therapy.
08:11So we can't really chit-chat, but how are you?
08:13Yeah, Helen, listen to me.
08:14Oh, my gosh, Julia.
08:15This class is so incredible for grief.
08:17There's this one man whose wife died because she slipped
08:20on an Ikea catalogue and fell down the stairs.
08:23I mean, how tragic is that?
08:25She was naked.
08:26Helen, listen, please.
08:27Stop, stop.
08:28Just listen.
08:29Mum's gone back into hospital.
08:31What?
08:32Connor just called me.
08:33Oh, my God.
08:34She couldn't breathe and they're just trying to figure out
08:36what's going on.
08:37I'm just heading out of the house now.
08:38Oh, my God.
08:39Right now.
08:40OK, OK.
08:41Oh, God.
08:42Breathe.
08:43She's at the Princess Mary, but I do actually think you should come
08:45if you can, I think.
08:46If you can.
08:47I'll just come straight there.
08:48I'll get a plane today and I'll bring some Florida water and say
08:51she'll clear out Mum's room and some crystals for healing
08:54and I'll pick up some orange squash for her because I know
08:56she loves her.
08:57Great.
08:58Bring some orange.
08:59Loves it.
09:00Bring some orange squash, definitely.
09:01Yeah, OK, great.
09:02Listen, you just let me know what time you get in.
09:03Text me.
09:04I can't believe it.
09:05I can't believe it.
09:06Fuck me.
09:07LAUGHTER
09:12I mean, I'm going to show you what I know, you mentioned
09:15some of the other people in Andrew Risberg, Johnny Flynn,
09:17Timothy Spall.
09:18Timothy Spall, yes.
09:19Dame Helen Mirren, I hear she had some reservations or some
09:22doubts.
09:23So it all went through proper channels and agents and I spoke
09:25to her on the phone and I told her the story and I said it was
09:28written by my wonderful son and I was going to direct it and she
09:32was listening and listening and she said, darling, I do have to
09:34stop you because actually I've got two personal rules.
09:38I will not play someone with dementia and I won't play someone
09:41who has got cancer.
09:43And I said, OK, absolutely fine.
09:45Totally understand that, which I did.
09:47And I said, there's no need.
09:48I won't send you the script.
09:49She said, no, no, do send it.
09:50It does sound rather special.
09:52A week later, I get an email.
09:53She says, I'll break my rule.
09:55I'd love to support you.
09:56This is a wonderful, wonderful project.
09:59We got Helen Mirren to be in our role.
10:01And she's great in the film.
10:02She really is amazing.
10:03She's wonderful, yeah.
10:04And I suppose as a director, you know, if you're directing people
10:06like Dame Helen Mirren, you know, that must make your job
10:09kind of easier.
10:10But then, as you say, you...
10:12Did I shit myself is what you're saying.
10:14In a ditch in New Zealand.
10:16There's a red chair waiting for you.
10:18Let's not get on to poo.
10:19You always get me on to poo on this show, Greg.
10:22Come on, back in the room.
10:23Back in the room.
10:24Oh, no.
10:25The grandchildren.
10:26There's a lot of very young grandchildren.
10:27Yes.
10:28I mean, directing them must be like sort of herding cats.
10:31Oh!
10:32Directing children is the greatest joy.
10:35There's this thing of never work with children and animals.
10:38Working with children is wonderful because children, children bring the joy.
10:42And I also have a theory about kids.
10:44Unless they are incredibly, incredibly gifted, actually, you can't teach children to act,
10:49but you can just show them how to be by creating an environment that feels really safe,
10:54really playful and encouraging.
10:55They were encouraged not to learn their lines.
10:58They were encouraged to make lots and lots of juicy mistakes.
11:01And I would sometimes say to them things like,
11:03Now, you see that hospital bed over there?
11:05I've hidden something in that bed.
11:06And your job in this part of the story is to just find what I've hidden in there.
11:10Haven't hidden a thing.
11:11The children never knew that we were rolling cameras.
11:14And so they were completely natural all of the time.
11:16We would just use hand signals.
11:18And it was just amazing.
11:19And they loved it and they didn't want it to finish.
11:22And working with children, I mean, as you say, a lot of people say working with children is difficult.
11:27Jacinda, tell us when you discovered you were going to have a baby.
11:33The precise moment? The bathroom?
11:36Well, in New Zealand, election night, it's not always clear whether or not you have been successful.
11:46So in 2017, I somewhat unexpectedly became leader of my party, campaigned hard and on election night,
11:54didn't know whether or not we had managed to clinch government.
11:58So we went into a period of negotiations.
12:00And they take about two weeks, typically.
12:02I was about three days shy of those talks concluding and finding out if I was the Prime Minister of New Zealand,
12:10when I found out I was pregnant.
12:13Is that actually true?
12:14That's actually true.
12:15Oh, my God.
12:16You're even more amazing.
12:18I'm really glad you've gone there because you could say that's terrible planning.
12:22It was, it was.
12:25But women, we just get on with it, don't we?
12:27Come on.
12:28That's right.
12:29That's right.
12:30And it was just like that.
12:31You just had to take every day as it came because then three days later, live on the 6pm news,
12:35the minor party we were negotiating with declared that I would be the Prime Minister.
12:39And it was only me and my husband that knew that I'd do it while having a baby.
12:43So even when you were being sworn in...
12:45Oh, my God, she is amazing!
12:48You are so amazing!
12:50When you were being...
12:51Well, I could probably add, he wasn't actually my husband at the time either.
12:55Even more amazing!
12:57I misheard and I thought you said it wasn't even my husband.
13:00Funny story.
13:03So it was awkward.
13:06It was awkward.
13:07Hilarious.
13:08But you weren't able to tell people by the time you were being sworn in.
13:13No.
13:14No.
13:15And at that point, by the time I was being sworn in and we had then a very official regal ceremony
13:22at Parliament to open up Parliament.
13:25And the Governor-General comes in and gives a speech from the throne.
13:28And for that moment, she faces all of Parliament.
13:32And then I sit next to her on this side facing out, the Leader of the Opposition here,
13:37the entire judiciary, leaders of the armed forces, very, very regal.
13:43And the entire time, I'm thinking, I'm absolutely going to throw up.
13:48And I'm clocking where my exits are.
13:51I even started thinking, would anyone believe I just had a bad kebab?
13:56But thankfully, thankfully I got through.
14:01And I got through 20 weeks without telling people.
14:05Wow, that's amazing.
14:06A lot of flowy blouses.
14:08Because Seth, your wife, it wasn't morning sickness, but your wedding day was nearly spoiled.
14:15Yeah, she had food poisoning.
14:17And we were at our rehearsal dinner and then she felt terrible.
14:22And she said, I don't feel well.
14:24And I said, it's, trust me, it's just wedding jitters.
14:27That thing when, like, a man with no experience just is very certain of what's happening.
14:33Having gone to zero days of medical school, I'm like, trust me, it's just wedding jitters.
14:37You're very nervous about marrying me.
14:39Yeah, yeah.
14:40And you have every right to be.
14:42No, but she's like, I think I have food poisoning.
14:44I'm like, I promise you, it's just jitters.
14:46It's wedding jitters.
14:47And then, you know, we did sleep in separate beds at different places the night before our wedding as per tradition.
14:52And then in the morning, I called her.
14:54I'm like, so how are you doing?
14:55She's like, I am in the emergency room.
14:56I do have food poisoning.
14:59But it was the one thing that was so lovely is that we had, she really wanted to do a rehearsed first dance.
15:06And we're both really terrible dancers.
15:08And we had, like, gone to a whole, like, dance class with a, you know, personal instructor.
15:13And even the instructor who started by saying, look, anyone can be a dancer as long as you're in love.
15:18And at the end of the first hour was like, hum.
15:23And I remember, like, the night of, you know, at the wedding, because she did Tough It Out and, you know, was on an IV and she rallied the way women do.
15:31And she goes, I just don't think we can do the first dance.
15:34And I remember being like, oh, thank God.
15:36Thank God you ate a bad oyster.
15:40Because, Alan, where were you?
15:42Was it Mexico?
15:43I got Montezuma's Revenge.
15:44Have you heard that?
15:45Yeah.
15:46Oh, my God, I had that.
15:47What did you do?
15:48What did you do to Montezuma?
15:49I know, listen, it was so bad.
15:51And this sounds like a made-up story, but it's true.
15:54Have you heard of Palenque, where all the Inca monuments are?
15:57I felt, oh, my God, I'm going to shit myself.
16:01And then I ran and got some water.
16:03And as I came out the bushes, there was a marathon there.
16:07And a woman ran past, took my bottle of water and tipped it over her head.
16:11She thought I was one of those people.
16:13Yeah.
16:14Oh, no.
16:15I was so dehydrated.
16:17And can I say, Hotel Capri in Acapulco, they refused to give me more toilet paper.
16:22Oh, that's not nice.
16:24No, Mr Carr.
16:25No, Mr Carr.
16:26No, please.
16:27Indeed.
16:28And do you remember that finger boy?
16:30Because it was...
16:31Do you remember the finger boys?
16:32The finger bus is coming.
16:33The finger boys.
16:34I think we were saying the finger boys.
16:35The finger boys.
16:36That I saw around Montezuma's revenge.
16:38I thought he said finger boys as well.
16:39I was thinking...
16:40You're the one.
16:41You're the one.
16:42I remember just...
16:43Use this.
16:44I remember just laying next to the toilet and it was coming out both ends
16:49and I was just staring at him.
16:50How could it get worse?
16:52And then this party boat came round.
16:54The finger boys are coming.
16:55Fuck you.
17:04Kate, we must also remind everybody that we'll be seeing you soon
17:07in the third instalment of Avatar.
17:09Correct.
17:10Yes.
17:11This one's called Fire and Ash.
17:13I know.
17:14It doesn't look anything like me.
17:15Every time I see myself in Avatar, I'm like, oh, that is actually me.
17:18No.
17:19But they do make you go and do it.
17:20Yes.
17:21Yes.
17:22Absolutely.
17:23But you can tell it's me from my top lip, I think.
17:25And because they've kept my beauty mark, which is nice.
17:28I mean, it's not animation.
17:29It's proper motion capture.
17:31But this time, no holding breath underwater.
17:33No, there was quite a lot of that as well still.
17:35Oh, really?
17:36And there was a bit of underwater fighting in this one.
17:38But I can't really say anything.
17:40You're going to have to see it.
17:42Well, people can find out on the 19th of December.
17:45Avatar, Fire and Ash is on the 19th of December.
17:47And don't forget Kate's film Goodbye June.
17:49That is in cinemas from next Friday.
17:51Very good.
17:52Now, Jacinda Ardern brings us a truly extraordinary documentary about her time in office.
18:03It's filmed over seven years.
18:05It's called Prime Minister and it's out in cinemas today.
18:08And before we talk about it, here's just a taste of the trailer.
18:12I think I have natural levels of anxiety for someone who's 37 years old and who's also pregnant.
18:20Every time I got on a plane, I would look out a window and I would think,
18:23from that mountain to that river, that is my responsibility.
18:27Oh!
18:28Well, this is normal.
18:30I have three years to do as much as we can.
18:33But in the back of my mind, I thought, how am I going to do this with a baby?
18:37I just feel sorry for myself listening to that because I just have no idea what's coming.
18:43Absolutely no idea.
18:45There were two groups on the island.
18:47Those who were evacuated and those close to the eruption.
18:50We only have six cases at the moment.
18:52This can only be described as a terrorist attack.
18:57Crises make governments and they break governments.
19:00If things went wrong, it was my job to fix it.
19:03Wow.
19:10It obviously turned into this amazing story.
19:13But as you said there, you know, you didn't know what was coming.
19:15So when you started filming this at the beginning, all those years ago,
19:19what did you think the film was going to be?
19:22Not this.
19:23That's for sure.
19:24My now husband is a broadcaster.
19:28And so when he was in close proximity to all of these things suddenly happening,
19:33he thought, well, I should capture this.
19:36And I think only he could have, you know, helped create what it now is
19:42because I would never have otherwise let someone film me as consistently in my pyjamas.
19:48Or my bathrobe or at home and behind the scenes.
19:52And it's created, I hope, you know, a story that shows what it's like to lead.
19:58And I hope also a story that says that you can lead differently than perhaps the way we see in the world today.
20:04Yeah.
20:05I mean, I have to say there are times when you're quite tetchy.
20:08There are times when you wish Clark would stop.
20:10You make that sound like that doesn't happen often.
20:13It's the bulk of the footage.
20:15Yeah.
20:16And that's because we never had any intention about what would happen with the footage.
20:19You know, I was doing it in New Zealand.
20:21We have this great project where archivists call politicians and interview them.
20:26And they've been doing it for decades.
20:28So I was recording these interviews.
20:30And that was another reason he thought, well, I'll put some footage in as well.
20:33But without a clear idea of what would happen with it.
20:36Yeah.
20:37And I think that was positive, too, because otherwise I would, I don't think I would have been as open otherwise.
20:42Yeah.
20:43And so obviously the thing that kind of brought you to global attention was your response to COVID, where you shut the borders, the quarantine, you got it down to zero cases.
20:50Yeah.
20:51And initially, obviously, incredibly popular in New Zealand. You had this landslide election victory.
20:55Yes.
20:56Yeah, we did.
20:572020, it was almost, the election then was almost like an election in the middle of a war of sorts.
21:03It's how it felt in some ways. And so it was an unprecedented victory, but it never felt like victory.
21:10I kind of thought, okay, people want us to keep going. And so we did, but it got harder.
21:15Yeah. I mean, we were certainly aware of what New Zealand was doing here.
21:18In America, were they aware of?
21:20Very much so.
21:21You know, people were lucky enough, I think, everybody wanted to go there.
21:25You know, that was the place everybody wanted to be.
21:28And yeah, I mean, certainly we were jealous.
21:30Any time, you know, you saw a ticker that there was a country with zero cases, that seemed like a job well done.
21:35Yeah.
21:36You know, the New Zealand, Immigration New Zealand website after a couple of particular elections in the US has crashed.
21:42Yeah.
21:43I would imagine.
21:44Yeah, people looking into it.
21:45Everybody was like, are they doing, can I be an extra? Are you still looking for a hobbit?
21:49That's it.
21:50LAUGHTER
21:51So it began very well, and people in New Zealand were happy with what you were doing.
21:56And then as time went on, cracks began to appear.
21:59We've got a second clip from the documentary.
22:01I just don't understand how anyone could assume that I'm so cavalier about having a whole city and over a million people in lockdown.
22:12Of course, I think about it all the time.
22:15I have to take sleeping pills so I don't think about it all the time.
22:18My question is to the Prime Minister. Does she accept estimates that New Zealand's economy will shrink by 10% this year, while Australia's will fall by less than five?
22:38Mr Speaker, as I've said, I've heard a range of...
22:41She doesn't.
22:43Why something?
22:45Simon Bridges yelled across the house, she doesn't do the economy.
22:52They wanted to punch him in the face.
22:54LAUGHTER
22:55APPLAUSE
23:00And the...
23:02I mean, the answer might be obvious, but why was that comment so annoying?
23:06You know, because at that time, of course, we were focused on both,
23:09and our view was that a, you know, response on Covid that focused on keeping people alive
23:14was also the best response for the economy as well.
23:17I should add, I'm not a violent person.
23:20LAUGHTER
23:22And we did get through, and so many of the things that they predicted may happen, we managed to prevent.
23:27It was hard, but I still feel proud of that.
23:30And negative voices began to get louder, and there is still this very kind of vociferous group in New Zealand who feel very strongly about you.
23:37What went wrong? What was the tipping point?
23:41Well, I think, you know, one thing yet again, of course, we all take responsibility for our own time in politics and in office,
23:49and so I say this next thing not to diminish that, but I think we have seen politics globally shift gears.
23:56And I think we have seen politics, you know, carry a lot more grievance from individuals, and it's in some ways become more violent and aggressive.
24:05So, you know, I don't think it was just any one leader that has experienced that shift. It has shifted.
24:11And yet, in amongst all of that, I do think we're in a moment in time.
24:15And I think in response to that moment in time, my plea is for people to not give up on an expectation that politics can be better.
24:25Expect decency in politics. Expect empathy and kindness in your politics.
24:29And I do think that we'll return to that as well.
24:32I hope that bitterness never comes to the stage.
24:34Yeah.
24:36Yeah.
24:37And, Cassandra, are you worried that this documentary, anyone watching it will think,
24:44Dear God, I'm never going into politics.
24:47I do get asked the question, would you ever recommend it to a young person?
24:51Absolutely, I would. And, you know, look, the documentary captures the big moments.
24:56Yeah.
24:57But there was so much joy in between. So much joy.
25:01What other job, if you're, you know, if you're a do-gooder like I can be sometimes,
25:07where you see a problem in the world and you've got the power to do something about it,
25:10what other job do you get that gift?
25:12So I would absolutely recommend politics to good people and we need more good people in there.
25:20So, don't shy away.
25:22Are you going to go back into politics?
25:23No.
25:24No.
25:25No, no, no, no, no.
25:26Do as I say.
25:27Do as I say.
25:28I did it for 15 years.
25:29OK, fair enough.
25:30You started very young.
25:31Yeah, thank you.
25:32How young were you when you got into politics?
25:33I was, well, when I went into parliament, I was 28.
25:34Wow.
25:35That's amazing.
25:36Yeah.
25:37So, I feel like I did most of it.
25:38All right, all right.
25:39And now it's for the next generation.
25:40Well, listen, it is a fascinating watch. It really, really is.
25:54So, the prime minister is in cinemas now.
25:56OK.
25:57Right.
25:58We turn to Mr. Seth Meyers.
26:02The award-winning host of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
26:07You can see it here in the UK on weekends on CNBC.
26:12So, based on that, you don't watch it.
26:14Well...
26:15CNBC.
26:16This can't be right.
26:17C.
26:18An artist.
26:19No.
26:20C.
26:21C.
26:22Channel.
26:23I was thinking he sounds like a children's channel.
26:26Yeah.
26:27Well, thanks for the support, Graham.
26:29It's also available on YouTube.
26:31Yeah, yeah, that's easier, yeah.
26:32Or if you go to America, you can be on it.
26:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:35Perfect.
26:36Yeah, yeah, no, no.
26:38It's a celebrity talk show.
26:39It is.
26:40It is a celebrity talk show, like this.
26:41But once a year, Seth Meyers, you break your booking policy.
26:45Oh, yes.
26:46I have my...
26:47Well, once a year on Thanksgiving, it's very hard to book, obviously, on Thanksgiving.
26:51And so, when I started my show, I started with my parents and my brother are on every
26:55year.
26:56And it's very lovely.
26:57But then this year, we went a little bit further and I had my children on the show,
27:01who are young.
27:02They're nine, seven, and four.
27:03Wow.
27:04And I did not tell them they were going to be on the show.
27:07I gave them no warning because I thought they would get stressed.
27:09They were actually in the building to take their Christmas card photo.
27:12And I just sort of low-key said, let's just have three microphones ready.
27:16And we pre-taped it a week early.
27:18But after our first guest that night was Cynthia Erivo, and the kids had finished their photo.
27:23And I go, just come out.
27:24Daddy's going to ask you some questions.
27:25And it was six minutes.
27:28It's the most white-knuckle interview I've ever done.
27:31At the bottom of the hook clip, here's Seth and the Meyer children.
27:35Yeah.
27:36Well, how did you guys...
27:37Did you get here in a car or a subway, Axel?
27:39Car.
27:40Got you.
27:41What about...
27:42Subway.
27:43You took the subway?
27:44Addy.
27:45We came at different times.
27:46You came at different times?
27:47Addy, did you like the subway?
27:48Yeah, the subway smelled like diarrhea.
27:59So huge.
28:00Yeah.
28:01You see, children bring the joy.
28:03Children bring the joy.
28:04Children bring the joy.
28:05My oldest was the one who was the most, I think, had the most anxiety about doing it.
28:10And as we walked off, he just like took my arm.
28:12He goes, that was great.
28:13We should do it again soon.
28:15Very much.
28:16And they just like, God, the bug.
28:18Is that the son who thinks he's going to inherit the show?
28:20Yeah.
28:21My son said to me once, he goes, Dad, I have a question.
28:23I said, what's your question?
28:24He said, when you die, do I get your show?
28:27And I'm like, based on the diarrhea answer, your sister gets the show.
28:32And I said, before the talk show, in America, you were very famous because of, of course,
28:37Saturday Night Live.
28:38Yeah.
28:39There you are.
28:40I think we get up here.
28:41My friend Amy Poehler.
28:42Amy Poehler.
28:43Kate was on when I was on the show.
28:45Oh, my God.
28:46Can I just say, when I was on, it was absolutely terrifying.
28:48I think it's terrifying for everybody.
28:49Am I allowed to quickly tell the story?
28:50Yeah.
28:51Even though this is totally unplanned.
28:52No, go.
28:53When I was on, it was the week after Ashley Simpson was done for lip syncing.
28:58Yes.
28:59I'm then on with Eminem, OK?
29:01I was doing publicity for a film called Finding Neverland at the time, and Johnny Depp
29:06and I had to miss the Wednesday rehearsal because we had to go to Chicago and talk to Oprah.
29:10And I'm thinking, oh, my God, what's the opening monologue going to be?
29:12I get to Wednesday night, come back from the Oprah thing.
29:15Still, they're like, well, we're just, you know, trying to figure it out.
29:18I'm like, just please tell me.
29:20It's, you know, it's a couple of days away.
29:22Just what you're going to have me do.
29:24The next day I go in and they're like, can you sing?
29:27And I said, I'm a little, you know, ish, kind of.
29:30Do you dance?
29:31I'm like, I mean, yeah.
29:32Like, do you tap dance?
29:33I'm like, yeah, I do.
29:34Perfect.
29:35I'm like, so what's the opening monologue?
29:37They're like, we'll get back to you.
29:38I'm like, oh, my God.
29:39But now what's happening to me?
29:40This is absolutely terrible.
29:42They gave me 24 hours to learn.
29:44Nothing's impossible.
29:45I have found for when my...
29:47I'm tap dancing and singing fully live the week after the whole
29:51Ashley Simpson thing.
29:52And also, I have to say something else.
29:54And this is a story I've never, never told.
29:56Eminem asked me to shave his bottom.
29:58I've always had much.
30:01There's always, like, a poo bum theme for me when I come on this show.
30:05Was it like a hand-held razor?
30:07Well, he did.
30:08He said, would you shave my butt?
30:09And I said, I'm sorry, I don't do personal grooming.
30:11Like, what?
30:12I'm not going to go with a bick and get your crackler.
30:16I was like, honestly, that's my...
30:18Never told that story before ever in my life in public.
30:21There you go.
30:22And can I say, should have said yes.
30:26Well, the door's open.
30:27Should have said yes.
30:28No, no, no, no.
30:29Once she said no, I did say yes.
30:31No, no, no, no.
30:34I was early in the show.
30:36I would do anything.
30:37Was that tip...
30:39Is that typical, that hosts get stuff really late?
30:42Yes.
30:43It speaks to the legacy of the show that people keep sort of opting
30:45into the terrifying week that it is.
30:48But I think if you were...
30:49You know, if we didn't have kind of a little bit of fear,
30:51I think, like, even you, we wouldn't do any of this
30:54because I think the fear motivates you.
30:56Why are you looking at me like that?
30:58I don't know what you're talking about.
30:59He looks terrifying.
31:00Look at the terror.
31:01Look at the terror in his eyes.
31:03I think, you know, it motivates you.
31:06I lost fear in about 1997.
31:09We did have a...
31:10We used to say, like, whenever a host wasn't nervous,
31:13we knew the show was about to be a disaster.
31:15Hello?
31:16We wanted...
31:17Honestly, and I remember...
31:19I was married to Sam Mendes at the time, Joe's dad,
31:24and I said to him, please don't come.
31:26Just don't...
31:27It's really fine.
31:28I don't need you to come.
31:29He's like, no, OK, fine.
31:31He bloody well came.
31:32I walked through the doors at the back,
31:34and I go, like this,
31:36and all I see is Sam sat there going...
31:42Oh, my God, it was really horrifying, actually.
31:45It was horrifying.
31:46And your connection with SNL Continues,
31:48because you do a podcast.
31:49Yes.
31:50The...
31:51Yes, with Andy Samberg, Kate's co-star in Lee.
31:54Oh, yes, because you...
31:55Old Andy, yeah, he's wonderful.
31:57He was in Lee with you, yeah.
31:59Yes, he was indeed.
32:00He's a great guy.
32:01Andy Samberg, is he your friend?
32:03He's one of my oldest, dearest friends, yeah.
32:05But what's the thing, and I don't want to make you sad,
32:08but I know your dog died.
32:10Yeah, my dog, 14 years old, frisbee, yeah.
32:13And Andy Samberg, he hated that dog.
32:16Yeah, so...
32:18He hated my dog, and he met my dog when she was a puppy,
32:22and he said on the day he met her, she's an ugly rat dog.
32:25And then every single time he came on my show,
32:28he basically would just say,
32:29how's frisbee that piece of shit?
32:31No.
32:32He would love to say that.
32:33Yeah, no, look, he's a bad guy,
32:35but he basically doubled down and doubled down.
32:38I mean, having your kids on, I guess.
32:41Yeah.
32:42But...
32:43The dog, I will be honest,
32:45the dog was not as electric as the kids.
32:48But it was like Andy leaned into the...
32:53It's not even looking at you.
32:54No.
32:57Yeah, no, frisbee wasn't a good desk.
32:58But he really just doubled down on the comedy of hating my dog.
33:02And then I kept saying, like, you know, this dog is 13 years old,
33:05and do you think you can weather the storm of hating a dog
33:08that recently passed?
33:09And he goes, I'm going to ride it out.
33:11And then I will say, when frisbee passed away,
33:14I called up Andy and I'm like,
33:15well, that awkward day has come.
33:17And he's like, I'm really sorry.
33:18How are your kids?
33:19I'm like, everybody's okay.
33:20He's like, okay.
33:21I am going to still publicly say she was a rat dog.
33:25And the New York Times, it was the...
33:27I mean, I have it framed,
33:28because the New York Times wrote an article that said,
33:30Seth Meyers' dog and Andy Samberg's nemesis
33:32passes away.
33:34And I'm like, I cannot believe the most famous thing about my dog
33:37is that you hated her.
33:40Because, Alan, you've got a new dog.
33:42Yes, yes, I've got a rescue dog,
33:44and she's completely deaf.
33:46And she was meant to be a guard dog,
33:48and, of course, she was dumped and she's deaf,
33:50so they gave me a lead which says, I am deaf on it.
33:53So I'm walking round the park and people are going,
33:55what's her breed?
33:57And I know the dog's deaf.
34:03And I start mouthing the dog.
34:09She's got, like, a bright colour,
34:11because she's got no recall, she's got bells,
34:13it's like taking a UFO for a walk.
34:16She's glowing all around the park.
34:18I don't know how I would react differently
34:21knowing a dog is deaf,
34:22as a person just walking past you in a park.
34:24That's deaf for cheese, for dogs.
34:26Oh, OK.
34:27What?
34:28That's what the woman said, cheese.
34:32That's deaf, that woman said,
34:34that's deaf, the deaf dog, cheese.
34:36OK.
34:37That's deaf for dogs?
34:38Yeah.
34:39That's all they would say to your dog, is cheese.
34:41Is that to send her out to the store?
34:43Cheese!
34:46Also, it seems like if the dog wants cheese,
34:48they would need to sign it to you.
34:52It's a new dog, don't give me stress.
34:54I like that's the one word that we're going to get.
34:58I know.
34:59I'll give you cheese.
35:00You can work out the rest yourself.
35:02There you go.
35:03You'll be fine.
35:04Seth, it is so great to have you on the couch.
35:07I'm so happy to be here.
35:08Don't forget, you can watch Late Night with Seth Meyers
35:11weekends on CNBC.
35:13Oh, wow.
35:14You know.
35:15I'm on it.
35:16I'm on it now.
35:17You know.
35:18Yeah.
35:20Meanwhile, Alan Carr is back on the road for his new tour.
35:25It's called Have I Said Too Much?
35:28But we should say, tickets are on sale, I think, today.
35:31Yes.
35:32But it'll be a while before they can go.
35:34Yes, 2027.
35:36I'm a slow writer.
35:39I'm a slow writer.
35:40Do you know what I was going to call the show?
35:43National Traitor.
35:44Ooh.
35:45But, you know, I've got to stop milking it.
35:49I've got to let it go, ain't I?
35:52If I die, I'll be like, oh, look, there's that bloke who wore that cloak.
35:55That's what they're going to say.
35:57So, you know.
35:58Better than being Andy Samberg's nemesis.
36:00Yeah.
36:03Now, your last tour to go all over the world, did you end up in New Zealand?
36:06Yes, New Zealand, Australia.
36:08Now, what's that hotel in New Zealand which you can bungee jump off the top?
36:13Oh, that's in...
36:14Oh, it's in Auckland.
36:15Auckland, it's in Auckland.
36:16It would have been...
36:17Was it the Sky Tower?
36:18Yes.
36:19They can bungee jump off the top of the hotel.
36:22I'm there unpacking.
36:23I'm seeing people screaming.
36:27Ow!
36:28Ah!
36:29And then I see them come back and I'm like, how shit is this hotel?
36:34My God, I wanted a double bed.
36:39So, yeah, I mean, I always stay there.
36:41It must be the Sky Tower, yes, yes, yeah.
36:43So, I always go everywhere and, um, yeah, I love it, I love it.
36:48There's no theme.
36:49There's only a bit about me being single but traitor stuff and stuff.
36:52I never have themes, I just...
36:54When my notebook is full of jokes, I just go on tour.
36:57I just do it every three years, I love it.
36:58I just love the freedom of it all.
37:00Yeah.
37:01And, obviously, people will want you to talk about, er, celebrity traitors.
37:04Mm-hmm.
37:05And were you, no offence, but were you as surprised as everyone else when you won?
37:11When I laughed in their face, I'm a faithful!
37:18I really thought when I go round that table, they're all just going to say, Alan, Alan, Alan.
37:22Yes.
37:23But they didn't.
37:24Are they stupid?
37:26Are they so stupid?
37:27And then I started crying because it was Nick Muhammad's face.
37:31He was like, we got this, we got this.
37:34And I'm like, no, I've got this.
37:36Have any of you seen this, the celebrity traitors?
37:40I've not seen this season, no.
37:41No.
37:42I saw the eight minutes sizzle reel.
37:44Me too, and I saw Celia Emery fart.
37:46Oh, my God.
37:47I was changed to her.
37:49I couldn't move.
37:54And, well, you have to talk about Paloma, because she did not find it funny.
37:58No.
37:59No.
38:00Has she got over it?
38:01She had, and I saw her yesterday, we did some silly sketches and stuff like that.
38:05But, you know, like I said to her, I said, it's a game, it's called the traitors.
38:09It's like going on, like, you know, what's it called, Naked Attraction and saying,
38:13what, I've got to take my knickers off?
38:15I've got a picture of you and Paloma last night.
38:19Oh, wow.
38:20Oh.
38:21Oh, my God.
38:22I think I know who you're being.
38:24I'm so excited.
38:27I could not get that foundation off.
38:30I'm looking at it.
38:31So, yeah, we are friends.
38:33That's just smiling.
38:34It's Claudia Winkleman.
38:35Great.
38:36You know what?
38:37I had a feeling.
38:40I've got a question.
38:41How do they, as a TV show, how do they inform you?
38:45That it's going to be you before the show.
38:47How does that all happen?
38:49You sit there.
38:50OK, I'll show you, yeah.
38:51Go on.
38:52Oh, my God, I'm doing the action.
38:53You're blindfolded.
38:54OK, go on.
38:55This is Claudia.
38:56Yeah, blindfolded.
38:57She's so light on her feet.
38:59Yes.
39:00Like a cart horse.
39:01Yeah, yeah.
39:02Yeah.
39:03Ah.
39:04That's what happened.
39:05Yes.
39:06Did you not nearly have a heart attack?
39:08Well, you clearly haven't seen it.
39:10I went...
39:11LAUGHTER
39:12I nearly chewed from my lip with panic.
39:16It's so intense.
39:18Do you already have a really cheap white wine?
39:21And do you really not know before that moment at all?
39:24No!
39:25The show doesn't...
39:26No, and you don't know who it is, and then you go into the turret
39:28and you go, and there was Jonathan Ross there and Kat.
39:31And then I watched it back, I didn't realise how loud I was.
39:34LAUGHTER
39:35Because I'd done my first murder and I said to Jonathan,
39:38I've done it.
39:40LAUGHTER
39:42I didn't realise how loud I am.
39:45Inside voice.
39:47LAUGHTER
39:48I know.
39:49I think we need a new hitman.
39:51LAUGHTER
39:52And it's going to be loads for you to talk about in your new show,
39:55so get writing it.
39:56A reminder, tickets for Alan's upcoming tour,
39:59if I said too much, are on sale now.
40:02Hey, it is time for music,
40:03and this Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter
40:05also murdered her way to the final of Celebrity Traitors.
40:09Here, performing There's Just Something About Her,
40:11it is Kat Burns!
40:13CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
40:23Let me tell you about a girl
40:26I don't really do this, but I can't keep it to myself
40:30She turns every head in the room, oh, God, she's something else
40:34I lose all my composure
40:36This ain't nothing but I felt
40:38I need some help
40:40Cause I'm not sure how you do it in my thoughts
40:48Intrusive living with freeing my mind
40:56There's just something about her
40:59I can't put my finger on it
41:01But every time she looks at me, can't help it
41:04I just fan it
41:05There's something about her
41:07And I wonder if she knows it
41:09Cause I lose all ability to talk
41:11It's like she's magic
41:13There's just something about her
41:15What you do to me
41:17Something about her
41:19I feel like a movie
41:21I just don't understand
41:23You're so perfectly made
41:25It's like, oh, she had a plan
41:27Have I missed my chance with you?
41:29You must be in demand
41:31I'm trying to keep it cool
41:33But I'd do anything I can
41:35But I sound like a fan
41:37Cause I'm not sure
41:39Cause I'm not sure how you do it in my thoughts
41:46Intrusive living with freeing my mind
41:54There's just something about her
41:57I can't put my finger on it
41:59But every time she looks at me, can't help it
42:02I just fan it
42:03There's something about her
42:05And I wonder if she knows it
42:07Cause I lose all ability to talk
42:09It's like she's magic
42:11There's just something about her
42:13What you do to me
42:15Something about her
42:17I feel like a movie
42:19There's just something about her
42:21What you do to me
42:23Something about her
42:25What you do to me
42:27Something about her
42:29You do something to me
42:31I lose it like a groupie
42:33You do something to me
42:35I'm never like this
42:37Usually you do something to me
42:39I lose it like a groupie
42:41You do something to me
42:43You do something to me
42:45I can't put my finger on it
42:48But every time she looks at me
42:50Can't help it
42:51I just panic
42:52There's something about her
42:53There's something about her
42:55And I wonder if she knows it
42:57Cause I lose all ability to talk
42:59It's like she's magic
43:01There's something about her
43:03Something about her
43:05Something about her
43:07I feel like a movie
43:09There's just something about her
43:11Something to me
43:13There's something about her
43:15I feel like a movie
43:17Oh yeah, there's something about her
43:19There's something about her
43:21There's something about her
43:27Oh!
43:29Cat Burns, everybody!
43:31And her band!
43:33Beautiful job!
43:35Come on over to Cat!
43:37Thank you so much!
43:41Just gorgeous!
43:42Thank you very much!
43:43Come on up!
43:44You know Alan!
43:45That's Seth!
43:46Jacinda!
43:47Kate!
43:48This is Pat!
43:49Hello!
43:50Oh!
43:51Very carefully
43:53Congratulations!
43:54That sounded so good live
43:56Thank you very much
43:57That is the single
43:58There's just something about her
44:00And that's from a new album
44:01How To Be Human
44:02Yeah
44:03Which is out now, right?
44:04Yeah
44:05And you talked about this album
44:07And saying oh it is about heartbreak
44:09But you didn't want it to be a sad album
44:11No, I mean it
44:13The album's about grief and heartbreak
44:14I lost my grandad last spring
44:16And I think I wanted to showcase the first year of what grief can look like
44:22And I remember watching a video of Andrew Garfield
44:25And he said that grief is just love with no home
44:28And I just thought that was really beautiful
44:30And I was like I need to make a project based on that
44:34And then that's how it came to be
44:35So it's sad but it's also hopeful at the same time
44:38I saw that Andrew Garfield
44:39It was on...
44:40That was on Stephen Colbert
44:41Yeah
44:42In America
44:43In America
44:44Yeah
44:45So here you are together
44:46Cat and Alan
44:47And then...
44:50I feel bad
44:51I feel bad talking about celebrity videos again
44:53I feel like I'm torturing you three
44:55You're kind of like oh dear god
44:56Alan did say please don't bring it up again
44:59Well maybe just one more time
45:01There's a cloak behind the sofa
45:05So at that moment when you both voted for Jonathan to be banished
45:13Had you talked about that beforehand the two of you?
45:16Well I think I was running with the big dog theory
45:20So I was like if I don't...
45:21The fucking big dog theory
45:23Jesus
45:24Once Stephen was gone I was like to Jonathan
45:27I'm going to have to do you
45:28And he was like I know
45:30So it was like I got to say
45:31But I think it was probably a shock that you did it
45:34I didn't know what I was doing
45:38I didn't know
45:39I was just pleased I got the name spelt right
45:41I mean really
45:42You were such a bad advertisement for strategy
45:45And they were sitting there going
45:47These traitors are so clever
45:49You know the way...
45:50We were just like
45:51We didn't know what was going on
45:53We didn't know what was going on
45:54But yeah
45:55Cat you were going on tour
