00:00Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the last straw time for this franchise to grow up. Here at FandomWire,
00:06we review the new animated family film Diary of Wimpy Kid, The Last Straw, streaming on Disney
00:13Plus December 8th, as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The Last Straw shows us it is hard to make a good
00:19animated family film, particularly for a franchise that is only a couple of entries shorter than the
00:25Fast and Furious or even the Police Academy series. However, in a world where films like
00:31Zootopia 2 and The Wild Robot exist, it is head-scratching how this franchise refuses to
00:36drift from its lane. Yes, those films have larger budgets, but it is the heart of those stories
00:41that sets them apart, which is frustrating because the creators of Disney Plus, The Diary of a Wimpy
00:47Kid, The Last Straw can't improve on a formula that yields diminishing returns, which, frankly,
00:54means it is time for this tired franchise to grow up. What is Disney Plus' Diary of a Wimpy Kid,
01:01The Last Straw about? The story continues to follow the awkward Greg Hefley, Aaron Harris,
01:06still in his own little world, on his eternal quest to become popular. In his constant pursuit
01:11of popularity, his best friend Rowley, Spencer Howell, continues to stand by his side. Speaking of
01:18sides, his brother Roderick, Holly Hobby's Hunter Dylan, is the thorn stuck in his side. Not to
01:24mention, as the middle child, he can't seem to get his parents' attention, including his father,
01:29Frank, Silicon Valley's Chris Diamantopoulos, who catches his ire after each scheme to become
01:35popular hilariously backfires on him. So much so that Frank decides to send him to a military academy
01:41after meeting a former troublesome neighbor who went there to set Greg straight. Of course,
01:47his earnest nature and threshold for humiliation against such a stern backdrop will only lead to more
01:52heartwarming hilarity for the entire family. The behavioral juxtaposition is a classic staple
01:58in comedy movies like this. That is, until it doesn't. Frequently, over and over, as the story
02:04never gets there, particularly with the over-critical father storyline that feels forced and even off-putting
02:10at time. Disney Plus Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Last Straw Review, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Last Straw
02:18was written by Jeff Kinney, the author of the source material. Based on one of his books of the same
02:23name, the movie has some light comedic moments. For one, it has some inventive physical comedy,
02:28even in the animated format, as disasters escalate. There are also some amusing meta-moments,
02:34including a neighbor watching home alone. However, these scenes grow old and repetitive.
02:40They often feel contrived, filling in a movie and a plot that are stretched beyond their limits.
02:45To make these moments feel fresher, even though they come from Disney animation,
02:49Kinney's script resorts to juvenile, sophomoric humor that falls short of the greedy mouse's seal
02:55of approval. I'm sure the franchise will find new fans or entertain diehards,
03:00but the filmography has grown stale with each passing chapter. A caveat of the streaming wars
03:05is that they exist only to keep the rodent's content machine spinning its wheels. While the
03:11animation certainly has its own style, it should evolve with the times, as it is often too stiff
03:16and lacks expression. Is Disney Plus Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Last Straw Worth Watching,
03:23co-directed by first-time animated feature filmmaker Matt Danner, Muppet Babies,
03:28and Diary of a Wimpy Kid veteran Gino Nischel, the scenes add nothing new to the world of cartoons,
03:34offering cringe comedy that lacks inspiration and recycled material. This is a problem of Kinney,
03:40S. All Danner and Nischel can do is not reinvent a wheel, a new defective one. Diary of a Wimpy Kid,
03:46The Last Straw is not worth watching. Not only is the main character annoying, a trait of any
03:51adolescent stuck in arrested development, trying to find their way, but Frank is so underwritten and
03:57lacks enough common sense, support, and heart to teach children a lesson for family entertainment.
04:02This is where the franchise earns its last straw, refusing to teach viewers lessons not only for
04:07the kids, but for parents as well. You can stream Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Last Straw exclusively on
04:14Disney Plus, starting December 8th.
