00:00New CBS Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss to debut with an Erica Kirk Town Hall
00:05In a move that's drawing attention across political and media circles,
00:09CBS News has scheduled a town hall event with Erica Kirk,
00:13the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, just months after his tragic death.
00:18The event is set for Saturday, December 13th,
00:21and will be led by none other than CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss.
00:26Erica Kirk has taken the reins of Turning Point USA since her husband's assassination in September.
00:32The man who carried out the attack is in custody and faces charges, though he has not yet stood trial.
00:38In a moment that surprised many, she forgave the alleged killer publicly.
00:43That was a game-time, second-to-second moment that was not pre-planned, she said,
00:47adding that she only said it because she meant it.
00:50The town hall will replace the scheduled broadcast of the 28th Annual Family Film and TV Awards
00:55which will air a week later.
00:57Bari Weiss said she'll never forget the moment Erica Kirk forgave her husband's killer.
01:02Charlie Kirk rose to prominence by building Turning Point USA
01:05into a leading youth-focused conservative organization.
01:09Erica Kirk has recently noted that many in her generation now get their news from
01:13TikTok and Instagram rather than legacy outlets.
01:17With viewership declining and digital-first outlets growing,
01:20Paramount made a bold move by acquiring The Free Press, founded by Bari Weiss.
01:25Our goal is to broaden our reach while solidifying our position as a leading voice in American journalism,
01:31Paramount CEO David Ellison said.
01:34The nationally broadcast town hall may also test CBS's attempt to reach across the aisle
01:39or acknowledge a wider range of American voices.
01:42Erica Kirk warns that we're living in a time where people see violence as a response to differing views,
01:48calling it a soul problem, not a gun problem.
01:51The event, first reported by The Guardian's Jeremy Barr,
01:55is expected to draw attention and scrutiny amid high political tensions
01:58and ongoing concerns about media trust, political violence, and generational change.
