00:00Is Macron making media outlets bear compulsory labels?
00:07If you believe a string of online petitions, French President Emmanuel Macron wants all
00:12news sites to display a label to distinguish good outlets from bad ones.
00:16This petition, penned by the conservative Les Républicains party, alleges that Macron's
00:21strategy is part of a cunning ruse targeting freedom of speech and information in France.
00:26Other political groups such as the conservative UDR party have also relayed a similar petition
00:31accusing the French executive of trying to establish a Ministry of Truth, ultimately calling
00:36for the label project to be abandoned.
00:39The right-wing press jumped on the media frenzy with the Journal du Dimanche, owned by media
00:43mogul Vincent Bolloré, publishing a front-page story accusing Macron of wanting to control
00:48the media.
00:49So, where did all this controversy stem from?
00:52On the 19th of November, at a meeting of readers of French local news outlet La Voix
00:56du Nord, Macron was asked about tackling fake news online.
01:00He responded by presenting his planned project for outlets to display a reliability label.
01:05However, he made it clear that this label should be awarded by independent professionals, highlighting
01:10that it was not the role of the government to monitor information.
01:14Following the controversy, the French executive took to X to call out misleading coverage of
01:18the President's statements.
01:28Macron cited the Journalism Trust Initiative, which certifies reliable media outlets as an
01:33example.
01:35They can participate by filling out a voluntary questionnaire on their journalistic methods,
01:39which is then peer-reviewed by a panel of experts.
01:41To date, more than 2,400 media outlets have registered to enroll in the JTI certification process.
