00:00Are you ready to put Craig Breslow in the hot seat?
00:03Oh, yes, I am.
00:04Are you ready to put him in the hot seat?
00:05No, that's your guy.
00:06Hot seat's too strong.
00:08Hot seat's too strong.
00:09It's not the holiday season, but he's, Craig, he's, I mean, that was a bit of a, a bit of
00:16a fib in retrospect.
00:17Kind of turns out a little bit of a fib.
00:18Someone call it a big giant lie.
00:20Yeah.
00:20Although the off season's not over to play your side of the street for a moment.
00:23He does have time to make some other moves.
00:25Thank you for pointing that out.
00:26For my guy, for my guy, Breslow, I appreciate that.
00:28And in the now, it seems to be going a little counter to what his original plan was.
00:33Yeah.
00:34I'll say, I just, I don't, I don't quite get it.
00:39And he does have more time to, I guess, deliver on what he said.
00:43But what he said is they're not going to go get a bunch of pitching depth.
00:46They're going to get a guy to pitch alongside Garrett Crochet.
00:48Yeah.
00:48And I'm sorry, Johan Oviedo.
00:51Yeah.
00:52Hoss of the Week nominee.
00:53Hoss of the Week nominee.
00:54A lot of people talking about him being Hoss of the Week nominee.
00:57He might have to win it.
00:59Although it's been a very competitive field.
01:00Oh, it's a strong field this week.
01:02We talked about the late, great Robert Woglow, the world's original and maybe greatest giant
01:08at 8'11".
01:09Oh, he was a Hoss.
01:12Way too soon.
01:12Emphasis on was, but he was a Hoss.
01:14Yeah.
01:15He was 8'11".
01:16He also had, what was the other big nominee?
01:18Oh, Aaron Harang, a.k.a.
01:20The Harangatang.
01:20Sure.
01:21Who was a random player this week who had similar height and weight as Oviedo.
01:26I'd imagine.
01:27He's packed on a few since his playing days, but I don't know that for a fact.
01:30Let's get him on the show.
01:31Might be more of a Hoss.
01:31So, yeah, those are a couple of big nominees, but I would say, you know, the newest member
01:36of the Red Sox.
01:37You probably got to give him the honor.
01:396'6", 275, and he's a new Red Sox.
01:41I don't know if we're ready to hand it out yet.
01:42No, no, not yet.
01:43But I think he should be a nominee.
01:45Strong contender.
01:46Red Sox trade for Juan Oviedo in a five-player deal that prominently features the password.
01:52Password's gone.
01:53Just Stinson.
01:54Yeah.
01:55Garcia.
01:56Stinson.
01:56Now a Pittsburgh Pirate.
01:58Okay.
01:58Honestly, the deal for me is whatever.
02:00I think it's fine.
02:01If you're telling, I didn't, I don't know where the password fits in.
02:06I didn't love what I saw when he got up here to the big leagues, but it was admittedly
02:09like a teeny tiny, barely even there sample size.
02:12It was quick.
02:12Yeah, Mike Trout struggled originally.
02:14I don't know where he fits in on this team.
02:16So you're telling me you want to trade him.
02:17I honestly don't really care.
02:19But could you put him in a deal for somebody different as opposed to Johan Oviedo, who
02:23I didn't pretend to even know until yesterday, although he did pitch against the Red Sox last
02:27year.
02:27He did.
02:28I think the deal is whatever.
02:30I think it's fine.
02:31I'm not here to rip the deal.
02:32So I am here to rip those comments from Breslau.
02:35And he came here saying they were going to go get a starter to pitch alongside Crochet and
02:42go, you know, A and B with Garrett Crochet.
02:45And they're not overly concerned about their depth.
02:48And between Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, all they're doing is bringing in pitching depth,
02:53which is not what they said they were going to do.
02:55So yeah, what does that indicate?
02:58What is that telling us about the rest of the offseason?
03:01Has Breslau already swung and missed on some higher end arms?
03:04Are some arms that are presently here that we had penciled into the rotation?
03:08Yeah.
03:08Could those potentially be on the move?
03:10That's what I want to talk about.
03:11It's 617-779-7937.
03:14You can get into it here on Jones and Keith.
03:17We interact Twitter and Instagram at Jones and Keith.
03:20Keep your eyes out for a top five Friday there today.
03:22Tough one to assemble.
03:23We're going to do our top five albums.
03:26All time.
03:26All time.
03:27We did our Jones and Keith wrapped yesterday.
03:29We went through our current Spotify albums, artists, mostly our kids' favorite albums and
03:34artists.
03:35Our listening age, Billy's 80.
03:36So we did a lot of that yesterday.
03:38We thought today would be a good day to give you our top five albums.
03:41We'll do that coming up.
03:42So keep your eyes again on Jones and Keith on Twitter and Instagram.
03:45You can watch along and chat twitch.tv slash Boston WEI.
03:48Always.
03:49And I mean always a healthy chat going on on Twitch.
03:51Do the same on YouTube.
03:53Watch, chat, subscribe to WEI.
03:56We do have a Friday 4-pack at 1130.
03:59We got the Week in Review at 1245.
04:02And joining us today for the first time, we're going to talk to Drew Carter.
04:05Hell yeah.
04:06The television play-by-play man for the Celtics, but also, this is what I'm really excited
04:11about.
04:11He's going to be doing the Monsters, Inc. animated broadcast on Monday Night Football.
04:14I'm all in on this Monsters, Inc.
04:16I've watched the, was it the Toy Story one from a couple years ago?
04:19Yeah, Toy Story.
04:19They've done a lot of, they did Simpsons.
04:21Sick brag, bro.
04:22They've done a lot of different ones.
04:24They've done some hockey ones, too.
04:25I know like the outdoor games, like the winter classic that they do, I think they animate.
04:29What's that show?
04:30I don't like, it's the kid.
04:32The Greens or something like that?
04:33Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:33Yeah, Lucas watches that.
04:34Does he?
04:35Yeah.
04:35I don't like that show.
04:36Yeah, it's not my favorite either.
04:37I don't care for it.
04:37What is it called?
04:38Big City Greens.
04:39Big City Greens.
04:40They did one of those broadcasts.
04:41I'm into it.
04:42There was one of them.
04:42It was one of the London games that, was it on like ESPN Plus?
04:46It was like oddly on a channel or an app that I didn't have, but then it was also on Disney
04:51Plus.
04:52So I'm like screaming at a animated B. John Robinson to score a touchdown for fantasy.
04:56Are you thinking of your Nickelodeon Slime Time game?
04:58Oh, no, no, no.
04:59I'm thinking of the, it was animated.
05:01It was like Toy Story style, but it was the only version of the game I could watch.
05:05I don't know.
05:05I like it.
05:06So we'll ask Drew Carter about that, plus the Celtics, obviously.
05:09So we'll talk to Drew Carter at 11 o'clock here on the show today.
05:13But yeah, I mean, if you want to start with the trade, be my guest.
05:16I mean, I think, as I said, the trade is fine.
05:18I don't hate it.
05:19I don't love it.
05:20It's another arm on the team.
05:22I guess I'd rather trade a prospect for a guy who can help right now, especially a prospect
05:26that doesn't fit, so I guess I'd give it a thumbs up.
05:29I just, I don't like what the deal, what I think at least, it represents.
05:33They're probably out on certainly Tarek Skubal and probably Joe Ryan and Cole Reagans and
05:40other names we've been talking about.
05:41So when I first saw this trade, I could look at it two different ways.
05:44There's a good way of looking at it, and then also sort of like a bad news way of looking
05:48at it.
05:49So first, the bad news way of looking at it is I don't think, and I'm not like dying
05:54that the password's gone, however, the Red Sox farm system is viewed as one of the better
05:58farm systems in baseball.
06:00If you go to Sox prospects, they still have Peyton Tolley and Connelly early on their list,
06:04as they should, right?
06:05Those guys haven't played a lot in the majors.
06:07But let's say you take those two guys out, right?
06:09Where's Josh Stinson?
06:10Where was he?
06:11He was sixth, so he'd move up to fourth if those two guys are on the big league club.
06:14So he, let's just say, in essence, is a top five prospect on the Red Sox.
06:20So I thought he would have been included in a different deal.
06:23I thought he would have been a guy that helps you get Scooble or Joe Ryan or somebody like
06:29that, somebody a step above Oviedo.
06:31So even though I'm not dying about Garcia, we even brought up the other day, you're already
06:35trying to trade Duran or Abreu, so what are you holding on to this guy for?
06:40So I'm fine trading him.
06:41I just thought it would have been for somebody better.
06:43Could you have done better than this guy?
06:44I think that's a fair criticism of the trade.
06:46And now you don't have him, and it's one less guy.
06:48It's another prospect gone.
06:49So, you know, there's that fine line of feel free to trade him, but, you know, don't trade
06:53him all the way either.
06:55Here's how I'll spin it as a positive.
06:58Oh, you're going to spin.
06:59Here's a good spinner.
06:59A sweeper.
07:00You're going to go Brez Pro.
07:02Well, it hasn't happened yet, but I'm saying how this could possibly be a good idea.
07:05I feel like you're being more Brez Pro than me right now.
07:06What if Craig Breslow and the Red Sox know that they're going to try to get Scooble or
07:12Ryan, and in order to do that, you're going to have to give up a Baio, a Early, or a Tully.
07:18You're going to have to give up maybe two of those three really good pitchers, and you're
07:21going to get one in, but then you don't want to be just barren for four and five, and that's
07:26where Oviedo comes in.
07:28So we have Oviedo and Gray.
07:29So, hey, look over here.
07:30We're adding these guys, knowing we're going to trade away Tully and Early, because they have
07:35such value, they have way more value than Garcia has, or honestly, probably either of the
07:39outfielders that they're willing to trade.
07:42So that would be my one thought.
07:43All right, let's cover ourselves a little bit, because we're going to need the depth, because
07:46we're going to trade away some of that.
07:47I think it's totally fair, except it hasn't happened.
07:49Well, it hasn't happened, and does Breslow really deserve the benefit of the doubt to
07:54big-brain something like that?
07:55No, no, no.
07:56I'm as Brez Pro as they come, although Keefe is making a late charge here.
07:59Yeah, look at this.
08:00But I'm not going to give him credit for big-braining and masterminding.
08:04A move over here, a move over there, all to make the big move that nobody saw coming.
08:08I mean, Crochet was a good trade.
08:10I really liked that trade.
08:12It wasn't exactly, hey, let me tinker over here and tinker over there and get all those
08:16pieces of big-brain a huge trade.
08:18It was just giving a package of prospects for a pitcher who was clearly available.
08:22Right.
08:22So, I mean, if he does it, great.
08:24And I'll look back and I'll go, I get it.
08:27I see it.
08:27I should have trusted my guy, Breslow.
08:28So, in the meantime, I'm not ready to give him that much credit for a No. 5.
08:35I like this.
08:35Karabas yesterday.
08:37I usually go to him for reaction.
08:38I think it's a good pulse of the fan base.
08:40All right, good barometer.
08:41Red Sox are stockpiling starting pitching depth.
08:43Never a bad thing, but obviously not a needle mover.
08:48I'd say Oviedo is not a needle mover.
08:50No.
08:50Our guy Bradfoe says Oviedo is a guy who will look absolutely dominant in one start.
08:55That's good.
08:55And big.
08:56Well, he's going to look big in every start.
08:58Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
08:59Good extension, Keith, if you care about his extension.
09:01Oh, he's going to look good in those.
09:03Yeah, talk a little bit more about his extension.
09:05Good extension.
09:06Okay.
09:06Good fastball.
09:08Yeah.
09:08So, look, dominant in one start, Bradfoe says, then absolutely not in the next.
09:13At least he has the potential to be a top of the rotation guy.
09:16He missed 2024 with Tommy John.
09:18He came back and made nine starts last year after a lat injury.
09:21He was originally a St. Louis Cardinal.
09:23He was traded for, now I'm blanking on who it was.
09:26Uh, it was a lefty.
09:28You're going to recognize the name when you see it.
09:30So he started as a Cardinal who's dealt to the Pirates.
09:32He pitched against the Sox last year.
09:33Who, Oviedo?
09:34Yes.
09:34Oh, Jose Quintana.
09:36Yeah.
09:37Meanwhile, Sean McAdam is sort of playing your side of the street here, Keith.
09:41All right.
09:41He wrote yesterday, at the very least, the Red Sox have a surplus of starters that puts
09:47them in an enviable position at the winter meetings as they get underway in Orlando this
09:51weekend.
09:52It would seem Crochet.
09:53I would hope Garrett Crochet is untouchable.
09:56It would seem, he says, Crochet, Gray, Oviedo, and Brian Baio are all untouchable.
10:04What?
10:05But nearly any of the team's other controllable young arms could be put, uh, or could put
10:10the Sox in a position other teams can only dream of.
10:13Why is Baio untouchable?
10:14He says, he says, it seems, Crochet, Gray, Oviedo, and Baio.
10:19He does list Baio fourth out of those four.
10:21Well, they just signed the other two guys.
10:23So, I mean, I guess that would be weird.
10:24Or they traded for Gray.
10:26Oh, no.
10:26I'm sorry.
10:27They traded for both of them.
10:28Okay.
10:28Yeah.
10:28Yeah.
10:28So like, I assume they're going to keep those guys.
10:31Obviously, Crochet, I wouldn't put Crochet and Baio in the same conversation.
10:34Me either.
10:35Because let's say you're trying to get a really major deal done and the team that you're
10:39making the deal with is like not as interested in Connelly early or Peyton Tully.
10:43Honestly, you wouldn't trade Brian Baio?
10:45I would.
10:46There was a lot of good last year.
10:47Baio was better than I thought he was going to be.
10:48If you're a part of the playoffs, you can say, well, it's one start.
10:51Pretty big start, but it was one start.
10:53I just, I don't know.
10:53I don't know if I have full trust in him.
10:56Um, and I'm not trading him for like another Sonny Gray or another Oviedo, but if it's
11:03Scoble or Joe Ryan or even Cole Reagans, then yeah.
11:07Yeah.
11:07I mean, look, if Baio's in that kind of deal, then I'll look back and I'll say, I get it.
11:11They added Sonny Gray and they added Oviedo because they wanted some, well, it's probably
11:17a good combination of at the end of your rotation, if they're 3-4, if they're 4-5, that's a good
11:23combination of Gray.
11:24You kind of know what you're going to get and Oviedo's an upside guy.
11:26So let's see.
11:28Um, if you're moving Baio for one of those guys, meaning Reagans or Ryan or on the really
11:33high end Tark School, well, then I get it.
11:35But I don't know, McAdams telling you that Baio's untouchable, or at least it seems that
11:39he's untouchable.
11:40He should be touchable.
11:42Somebody pretty touchable.
11:43Somebody's moving, Keith, right?
11:45Yeah.
11:45I would think.
11:45It might be Early, who's your guy.
11:47It might be Toley, who's my guy.
11:49It might be Baio, who's probably nobody's guy.
11:51So somebody like that is going to move.
11:54I do agree with that.
11:55Is it going to be for the high end pitching that Breslow promised?
11:59I'm dubious.
12:00And that's my guy.
12:01But I'm, I'm dubious.
12:02Meanwhile, Jeff passing out with some more Red Sox notes.
12:05Uh, he says the Red Sox will spend on a big bat.
12:10Now I wonder what the line for that is.
12:12How big, how, what's the number for a big bat?
12:15Is how many Tony Hawk skateboards is a big bat?
12:17Is Bregman a seven quote unquote big bat?
12:20Yeah.
12:20I think Bregman would qualify.
12:22I think so too.
12:22Yeah.
12:23Is Bichette?
12:25Yeah.
12:25Okay.
12:26I mean, I think so.
12:26I mean, definitely Alonzo and Schwarber.
12:28No, no doubt.
12:29But I think those other guys would qualify.
12:30Passon says today they will spend on a big bat and they're discussing their outfield surplus
12:36with multiple teams.
12:37Uh, given what Passon wrote earlier this week, we're probably talking about Duran or Abreu.
12:42So look, if Duran or Abreu are on the move and you add Baio or you add early or you add
12:48some other prospects to that deal, maybe there's still a high end pitcher to go get.
12:51And if you're going to spend on a bat or two, uh, then great.
12:54Then you've completed the off season.
12:56We all hope for so far.
12:57You've gotten some pitching depth that you said you weren't going to get.
12:59That's all you've done.
13:00Like I'm a little, I'm a little thrown off by that to be honest.
13:04No, it's his words are making it a little bit confusing because overall that's not the
13:08worst strategy in the world.
13:09Cause he went into last year.
13:10If you told me you're like, who's going to have a better year, Walker Bueller or Lucas
13:14Giolito, I probably thought based on recent history, it might be Walker Bueller and it
13:18wasn't even close last year going into the year, a thousand percent thought it was going
13:22to be Walker Bueller.
13:23And Bueller was terrible.
13:24And Giolito was really good.
13:25And he got hurt at the end, but like he was really good.
13:26And so there are something to be said for having a pile of these arms and kind of seeing
13:32which guy emerges, you know, they went in thinking, Hey, maybe Tanner Houck or Cutter
13:36Crawford, you'll get something out of.
13:37They were good two years ago.
13:39Crawford was on the shelf all year.
13:40Tanner Houck started, then was done.
13:42You know, so like you kind of need a bunch of arms.
13:45So I get it.
13:46But when you're out there telling everybody that we want somebody to go along with Garrett
13:49Crochet and then the first two moves you make are guys that are nowhere near Garrett
13:52Crochet.
13:53It's a, it's a little puzzling.
13:54It is, uh, that's how I would describe the start.
13:57I mean, the Red Sox have been active.
13:58I mean, you can't say they're not active and they've made some moves going into the winter
14:03meetings.
14:03I'd agree with McAdam on this where they put themselves in a position to, to be movers
14:07and shakers and to make some moves.
14:09So I don't know what's your comfort level or your trust level in Craig Breslow at the
14:15winter meetings.
14:15He's got to go execute, right?
14:17And I guess that's probably over-dramatizing.
14:20I mean, baseball's off season could go right until April, but this is a time to go pounce.
14:24So can he land a big bat?
14:26He has a surplus of arms.
14:27What's he going to do with them?
14:29He has a surplus of outfielders.
14:30What's he going to do with them?
14:32And again, what's your confidence level in Breslow to get something done with the winter
14:35meetings getting done or underway rather this week?
