00:00Now to the weather for you. The eastern U.S. is feeling a real winter chill. I felt this yesterday
00:06and coming into work today. Folks in this region are also seeing snow. The northeast saw its first
00:12big snowfall of the season Tuesday, with some areas seeing up to a foot of the white stuff.
00:16Tom Hansen is live in Middleton, New York, dealing with it, hopefully having some fun with it. Folks
00:22commuting in it are not enjoying it. Tom, good morning. What's happening out there?
00:26Yeah. Errol, you gave a warm welcome back from the break, but that warm welcome must have missed me
00:33because it is so cold here right now. Now, I want to give you some context. I'm holding up some snow.
00:38We held it up for evening news last night. This snow has crystallized. I want you to hear this.
00:43You can hear it's kind of a brick right now. We got four inches of snow here,
00:47and a lot of places got it a whole lot worse, but all of it is creating driving issues
00:51from the Midwest to the Northeast. It don't look like nobody's been on this road.
00:57Drivers braved snow-covered roads Tuesday as states from Kansas to New York were hit with a
01:01powerful storm. For some, it was the first taste of winter. All right, here we go.
01:06Dramatic video shows a semi-truck dangling off an interstate bridge in West Virginia.
01:11The trailer carrying bricks was likely the only thing keeping it from plunging down.
01:15The driver, who lost control, had to be rescued from the hanging cab.
01:19I was in there with him, and, you know, the safer we got that harness on him,
01:24the safer we was and the faster we could get out of there.
01:27In eastern Ohio, a truck hauling cars along Interstate 80 spun off the slick highway,
01:32crashing into nearby trees.
01:34This is our first winter storm, obviously, and because of that, people are not used to
01:40handling the snow anymore.
01:42Jacob Teweil is the public works commissioner for Middletown, New York.
01:45He's concerned Tuesday's dense, wet snow could turn into freezing rain and coat the pavement
01:51with dangerous ice.
01:52That's when we start having more accidents because people, they think that the roads are
01:56clear. It's not slippery. So we stay. We try to do an extra effort in there to put more salt
02:01when it's icy.
02:03How's it going so far?
02:05Not bad. A lot of traffic out on the road still.
02:08Robert Reynolds has plowed streets for 16 years. His advice to drivers?
02:12Just drive safe. Drive slow. There ain't no rush. You're going to get to your destination
02:19no matter what.
02:22And you know, one of the concerns here is that some of the snow, when it landed on the
02:26ground, melted and then refroze. That led to some slick patches. It's only going to get
02:31colder from here. As we look ahead to the rest of the week, those temps will feel right
02:37around zero in parts of New York where I am, Errol.
02:41Yikes. Take the advice. Move slow and steady and pick up the snow like Tom and have fun with
02:47it if you can. Otherwise, be careful.
02:49Tom, thank you very much. Appreciate you and the crew braving the temps.
02:53And looking ahead now, bitter cold temperatures are dipping into the northern U.S. Wind chills
02:58will be as low as the negatives in some parts of the Midwest and northern plains through the end
03:04of the week. You've got to bundle up. The Rockies are seeing well-needed snowfall move in today
03:09with upwards of two feet possible in the Colorado mountains. CBS News New York meteorologist Tony
03:14Siddiqui has your forecast. Good morning, Tony.
03:17Good morning, Errol. Much quieter day in the East Coast now that that system has moved on by high
03:21pressure, taking the rains and should keep things nice and quiet. Not the case, though, in the Rockies.
03:26Active day. Winter weather alerts for some travel issues that we could see. It's going to be helpful
03:33snow for the ski resorts, but this can pile on pretty quickly. We're talking about, I mean,
03:38a foot, foot and a half or so. Highest elevations, it's three to six inches for the front range
03:43of Colorado that stretches to the south tomorrow. Parts of New Mexico, Panhandle of Texas could see
03:48some accumulations, too. Meanwhile, you've got a clipper system moving through the Midwest today.
03:53You get a taste of it in Bismarck today. High temperatures, single digits, way below average.
03:58But this is just the beginning. Look at what you wake up to tomorrow morning.
04:03Record challenging air temperatures, cold. And yeah, this is just going to be brutal out there.
04:10Minneapolis feels like 15. Duluth feels like 22. Even Green Bay, double-digit feels below zero.
04:16That stretches into the east coast coming up on Friday morning. It's going to be a bitterly cold
04:22finish to the week. Back to you. All right, Tony. Thank you very much. Appreciate the warning.
