00:00Shakira and JLo shut down the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday on Fox, and fans
00:05are praising the subtle but powerful statements they made on Puerto Rico and U.S. immigration
00:10policy.
00:11The 15-minute performance saw the co-headliners perform their greatest hits, but it's a sequence
00:15of moments toward the end of the show that caught some viewers' eyes.
00:19In both a direct call to her Puerto Rican heritage and what some believe is a response
00:23to President Donald Trump's child immigration policies, Jennifer Lopez brought her daughter
00:27out to perform a moving snippet of her single, Let's Get Loud.
00:31Behind her daughter were a group of children, all holding hands and dressed in white outfits,
00:36featuring sparkling American flags on the tops.
00:38Around the young singer were other children, also dressed in white and sitting in what some
00:42have interpreted as cages of light.
00:45A moment later, JLo draped herself in a feathered Puerto Rican flag, while delivering a rendition
00:49of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A.
00:52Shakira and JLo's performance marked the first time two Latinas have ever headlined the halftime
00:56show.
00:57Singer and songwriter Shakira is a Columbia-born Latin pop artist, while multi-genre American
01:02singer, actress and dancer Jennifer Lopez was born and raised in the Bronx by Puerto
01:06Rican parents.
01:08One user tweeted,
01:09"...born in the U.S.A. JLo just stuck in political statement on immigration."
01:13Another tweeted,
01:14"...props to JLo, Shakira and or the choreographer for the necessary statement with Latino children
01:19in cages singing Born in the U.S.A."
01:21And another wrote,
01:22"...replaying the halftime show Tears. JLo and Shakira brought the children in cages
01:26on stage.
01:27Then JLo says Latinos, let's get loud, as Emmy sings Born in the U.S.A. with the fence
01:32in the background.
01:33Powerful statement."
