I'm Oliver Trevina in studio with The Hollywood Reporter, joined by this man, Oliver Stark.
00:09
Hello.
00:09
How are you?
00:10
I'm doing well.
00:11
Yeah?
00:11
Thank you for having me.
00:12
This is great.
00:13
Oliver and Oliver, British and British.
00:14
It's going to be so easy.
00:15
There's no novelty.
00:16
A minute ago, I did think, oh, what was his name?
00:18
Genuinely enough.
00:19
Oh, you did.
00:19
Because I just remember introducing and hearing an Oliver, and now I'm like, oh yeah, because
00:22
it was another Oliver.
00:23
Yeah.
00:24
I just, it slipped.
00:24
Sadly, I think the viewers will probably need subtitles on this once we get going.
00:28
Yeah, very much.
00:29
But we'll see how it goes.
00:30
Because we were just talking before, and it started speeding up very quickly.
00:33
So, we'll slow it down.
00:34
We'll take it easy.
00:35
And speed it up 9-1-1.
00:36
9-1-1.
00:37
9-1-1.
00:38
Straight in.
00:39
It's everything.
00:41
It's obviously a genre.
00:42
You know, emergency services have been done before, but it's just out there in a way that
00:47
I've never seen.
00:48
Yeah, I think the fact that it kind of covers dispatchers, police, and firefighters, yeah,
00:54
it kind of changes things up.
00:55
Because, you know, we've got the fire shows, we've got the cop shows.
00:57
It's also just nice to have that dispatcher on, because, you know, they're really the
01:01
first responders.
01:02
Right, right.
01:02
They're the people on the end of the phone.
01:04
They're the people who are very highly trained and coaching people through it before anyone
01:07
actually gets there.
01:08
So, I think it's really nice to include that.
01:10
Right.
01:10
I think that's what makes it so unique as a show.
01:12
Right.
01:13
And they go all out there.
01:14
Like, when you're watching it, you're like, I mean, the stunts, the chaos, I should say.
01:20
It's all there.
01:20
And it's not done by halves.
01:22
It's like, if it's in the show, it's like, we're going to do it.
01:25
We had a moment the other day where we had to take this guy down from the top of a truck
01:30
on a ladder, like, carrying him on a backboard.
01:33
Okay.
01:33
And one of the first ADs, it was his first day on the job, and he said, why don't we
01:36
just lower him in from two feet?
01:38
And the character said, that's not how we do it on this show.
01:40
Right.
01:40
Not on that show.
01:41
It's like, we do it.
01:41
We make it happen.
01:43
And it's because the crew is like, they're so talented.
01:46
Right.
01:46
And they make it safe and they make it real.
01:48
Right.
01:49
On that note, do you do all your own stunts?
01:51
Are you kind of active?
01:51
There's like 80, 90% of them, like genuinely, and we try and keep it, you know, like the
01:56
stunt people that we have make it very safe for us.
01:59
Right.
01:59
And then, you know, the more that we are able to do, the more it sells to an audience.
02:04
Right.
02:04
So, for example, there's like a roller coaster climbing section in the second episode.
02:08
I climbed a roller coaster.
02:09
I climbed a roller coaster track to like 85 feet in the air.
02:11
How long have you always wanted to?
02:13
It was amazing.
02:14
Honestly, they were like, you don't have to do it.
02:16
I was like, no, no, I'm doing it.
02:18
Right.
02:18
I'm going up there.
02:19
So, it was so much fun.
02:20
And it's just getting to do things that you've never been able to do before, you know?
02:23
Yeah, you strike me as someone that will always push to do it.
02:25
Oh, absolutely.
02:26
Yeah.
02:26
They didn't let me do one thing, which was like rappelling down a building from the 15th
02:31
floor.
02:32
Smart choice.
02:33
And this was in the second episode.
02:34
And they were like, just in case.
02:36
They were like, if it was episode eight or nine.
02:38
Finale, you're in.
02:38
We'd let you do it.
02:39
Yeah.
02:39
Because if you fall, then, you know, we'll just write that in.
02:41
But that was the one thing they said, actually.
02:44
And I think that's a smart choice.
02:45
Right.
02:46
Because I think ego can get in the way sometimes when you demand to do your own stuff.
02:49
Right, right.
02:50
And if you get hurt and the whole crew's out of a job for six months, like, it's not worth
02:54
it.
02:54
That's harsh.
02:54
That's harsh.
02:54
So, yeah.
02:55
It was the right decision.
02:56
Yeah.
02:56
Now, Bucks, he's a bit of a bad boy.
02:59
You know?
02:59
Likes to play by his own rules a bit.
03:01
And ladies' man as well.
03:02
At the start.
03:03
Yeah.
03:03
Yeah.
03:04
I mean, he's still a ladies' man.
03:05
Well, sure.
03:06
Fair enough.
03:07
Fair enough.
03:07
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:07
Let's call it as he is.
03:09
Okay.
03:10
He hasn't changed that much.
03:12
But he's learning to reign it in, I think, and he's maturing, which is nice to me that
03:17
we did start to see that progression.
03:19
Right.
03:19
I think it could have got old very fast if he was still just kind of, you know, running
03:24
around town.
03:24
You say that with a grin, like, there's Oliver crossed over there as well, I'm just saying.
03:29
No, I'm a nice family man.
03:32
Okay, perfect.
03:33
But back in the day, I'm sure.
03:34
Back in the day, going back to Hendon?
03:35
Hendon.
03:36
Hendon, yeah.
03:37
Hendon, there you go.
03:37
There you go, there you go.
03:38
So, we mentioned the finale.
03:40
I mean, what can we expect?
03:42
Lots of bangs, I'm sure.
03:44
Well, yeah.
03:45
It's going to be a big kind of high-octane episode, but also it really wraps up everybody's
03:50
story, which is nice.
03:52
It kind of puts an exclamation mark and a full stop or a period on, you know, everybody's
03:59
little story and everybody's little arc.
04:01
So, it really does feel like an ending.
04:03
So, then, when we move forward into the second season, it's a whole new beginning.
04:07
Right, right, right.
04:07
So, everything is wrapped up.
04:09
Questions are answered in a very nice, sweet way.
04:12
Absolutely, yeah.
04:13
Because that's lovely, what you two have going on.
04:15
I love it.
04:15
It's great.
04:16
I'm a big, big fan of that relationship.
04:18
Yeah, yeah.
04:19
When it first started, I didn't know where it was going to go.
04:21
We don't get that information.
04:22
And I'm so happy that it turned into what it did.
04:25
Amazing.
04:26
And it's nice that people have responded to it.
04:27
Yeah, you guys, yeah.
04:28
Yeah, it's nice.
04:29
It's not what you see every day in shows.
04:31
It's not what you'd expect.
04:32
And that's what's nice about it.
04:33
Absolutely.
04:34
I think it's refreshing to see it on television because it's not explored enough.
04:38
But it's a relationship that happens in real life.
04:41
And it's a very common relationship.
04:42
We just don't see it on TV.
04:43
Right.
04:44
So, yeah, no, I think the fact that we've gone down that route.
04:46
And it's not felt forced.
04:48
I don't feel like I'm really honoured and to play opposite Connie Britton.
04:52
As you know.
04:53
She's amazing.
04:54
She's beyond talented.
04:56
Amazing and beautiful.
04:57
Yeah, she's everything about it.
04:58
She's wonderful.
04:59
Yeah, that's amazing.
05:00
Getting to play that love interest.
05:01
I mean, I'm sure you didn't expect it a couple of years ago.
05:04
I did not.
05:04
A couple of years ago, I was just worried about where my next job was coming from.
05:08
Yeah.
05:08
Let alone being on a show with Connie Britton, Angela Bassett, Peter Krausser.
05:12
So, no, this is like a dream.
05:13
How was it going into this show?
05:15
Because, you know, you mentioned that cast.
05:16
It's so powerful.
05:18
For me, when we first started, I spent like the first two weeks just like deer in headlights,
05:23
I think, just like, you know, this is a big deal.
05:26
Right.
05:26
And then there was a really nice moment when that kind of went away and I just settled
05:30
into it because they're all so lovely.
05:32
Right.
05:32
Like genuinely, genuinely good people.
05:35
So that made that transition a lot easier for me and it's all been so welcoming that
05:39
it hasn't felt like a big deal.
05:41
Right.
05:41
Even though it is, like it hasn't felt like that, which is, I think, the best way that
05:45
it can go.
05:45
Right.
05:47
Loads of shows kind of have that crossover or, you know, shows nowadays have some amazing
05:51
guest stars.
05:52
If you could have anyone come in on 9-1-1 for an episode in season two, what would you
05:57
like?
05:59
I would like Evan Peters to come and do an episode.
06:03
Okay.
06:03
Because he does so much of Ryan's stuff.
06:05
Okay.
06:05
I just saw Evan, haven't I, actually?
06:06
Oh, really?
06:07
Okay.
06:07
I don't know him.
06:08
He's amazing.
06:08
He's great.
06:09
But I think he's an incredibly talented actor and because he does so many of Ryan's
06:12
shows, I think it would be really nice to see him come and do it.
06:15
Exactly.
06:15
It's a possible one to come and do a little guest spot or whatever.
06:18
I mean, he's very busy, I'm sure.
06:20
Right.
06:21
But if he gets a date, he wants to come and do a scene.
06:22
But that's a very likely one.
06:23
Who's one if you could have anyone?
06:24
Okay.
06:26
If I could have, okay, I would have, this is an impossible one.
06:29
This is not going to happen.
06:30
You never know that.
06:31
I don't think he's guesting on TV anymore.
06:32
You said yourself, you didn't know that you'd be with Connie Britton.
06:34
Fair enough.
06:34
I would love Michael Shannon to come in.
06:38
Just because I would be there in awe.
06:40
Right.
06:40
Just kind of standing back and, yeah.
06:44
He could just walk in and just save the day.
06:46
A little bit, yeah.
06:47
He could play my dad.
06:48
He could play your dad.
06:49
Or your brother, maybe.
06:52
Probably my dad.
06:53
I mean, I was trying to be nice to Michael.
06:55
Sorry, Michael.
06:56
I mean, I was trying to get him on the show.
06:58
If he's watching now, he's like, I'm not covering the show.
07:00
Yeah, no, no.
07:02
Come play my brother, Michael, please.
07:03
Okay, amazing.
07:04
We're going to do THR's top five.
07:06
Five easy questions.
07:07
Okay, I hope they are easy.
07:09
They are.
07:09
I promise.
07:10
TV show you watched as a kid that you wish you were in.
07:13
Hustle, which is a British show.
07:15
Do you remember that?
07:15
I don't.
07:16
I don't, actually.
07:16
Okay, it was a show.
07:17
How long ago was this?
07:19
10, 15 years ago?
07:20
I might have been over here.
07:21
Might have missed it.
07:22
Oh, all right.
07:22
Okay, it's about this kind of crew of grifters, con men.
07:27
But it was just so, it was like Ocean's Eleven put on television.
07:30
Oh.
07:30
And they were all very sleek and cool.
07:33
I'm going to have to watch this.
07:33
Yeah, no, it was great.
07:35
Okay.
07:35
It went for a number of seasons, like four or five seasons.
07:38
I loved it.
07:38
All right, I'm watching that.
07:39
Hustle.
07:40
Hustle.
07:41
One word to describe your journey as an actor so far.
07:49
Struggle.
07:51
That's an honest one.
07:52
Yeah.
07:52
Yeah, there you go.
07:53
Favorite movie soundtrack?
07:56
Drive.
07:57
Drive.
07:58
It's a good one.
07:59
I would have guessed Lion King.
08:00
That's number two on the list.
08:01
Number six.
08:02
Yeah, yeah.
08:02
One actor.
08:03
If you said top two, then drive Lion King.
08:05
I would have got it.
08:05
You do love Lion King, don't you?
08:06
Everybody loves Lion King.
08:07
Everyone loves Lion King.
08:08
I mean, that's, yeah.
08:09
One actor who inspires you?
08:10
I really like the way that Brad Pitt has gone into producing, so I would say that to take
08:19
his career from acting into producing really cool independent movies, I would say Brad Pitt
08:23
on for that reason.
08:24
Okay, that's a good one.
08:26
Strong one.
08:27
We're in a new age of people binge-watching.
08:29
Last show you binge-watched?
08:32
Oh, it's been a while because when we're shooting, I find it really hard to watch anything else.
08:36
I think Ozark on Netflix, the Jason Bateman season, which was like so unexpected every episode,
08:41
so yeah, I think Ozark.
08:42
You had to keep watching it.
08:43
Yeah.
08:43
Yeah.
08:44
And there were just moments in there.
08:45
I was like, what?
08:46
Like I had no idea that was coming, so yeah, probably Ozark.
08:50
That's a good one.
08:50
We wrap up on that.
08:51
Oliver Stark.
08:52
All right.
08:52
Thank you for having me.
08:53
9-1-1.
08:53
Watch him.
08:55
Just a genius.
08:56
See you there.
