"I think it’s refreshing to see on television because it’s not explored enough but it’s a relationship that happens in real life," Stark told THR.
Transcript
00:00I'm Oliver Trevina in studio with The Hollywood Reporter, joined by this man, Oliver Stark.
00:09Hello.
00:09How are you?
00:10I'm doing well.
00:11Yeah?
00:11Thank you for having me.
00:12This is great.
00:13Oliver and Oliver, British and British.
00:14It's going to be so easy.
00:15There's no novelty.
00:16A minute ago, I did think, oh, what was his name?
00:18Genuinely enough.
00:19Oh, you did.
00:19Because I just remember introducing and hearing an Oliver, and now I'm like, oh yeah, because
00:22it was another Oliver.
00:23Yeah.
00:24I just, it slipped.
00:24Sadly, I think the viewers will probably need subtitles on this once we get going.
00:28Yeah, very much.
00:29But we'll see how it goes.
00:30Because we were just talking before, and it started speeding up very quickly.
00:33So, we'll slow it down.
00:34We'll take it easy.
00:35And speed it up 9-1-1.
00:369-1-1.
00:379-1-1.
00:38Straight in.
00:39It's everything.
00:41It's obviously a genre.
00:42You know, emergency services have been done before, but it's just out there in a way that
00:47I've never seen.
00:48Yeah, I think the fact that it kind of covers dispatchers, police, and firefighters, yeah,
00:54it kind of changes things up.
00:55Because, you know, we've got the fire shows, we've got the cop shows.
00:57It's also just nice to have that dispatcher on, because, you know, they're really the
01:01first responders.
01:02Right, right.
01:02They're the people on the end of the phone.
01:04They're the people who are very highly trained and coaching people through it before anyone
01:07actually gets there.
01:08So, I think it's really nice to include that.
01:10Right.
01:10I think that's what makes it so unique as a show.
01:12Right.
01:13And they go all out there.
01:14Like, when you're watching it, you're like, I mean, the stunts, the chaos, I should say.
01:20It's all there.
01:20And it's not done by halves.
01:22It's like, if it's in the show, it's like, we're going to do it.
01:25We had a moment the other day where we had to take this guy down from the top of a truck
01:30on a ladder, like, carrying him on a backboard.
01:33Okay.
01:33And one of the first ADs, it was his first day on the job, and he said, why don't we
01:36just lower him in from two feet?
01:38And the character said, that's not how we do it on this show.
01:40Right.
01:40Not on that show.
01:41It's like, we do it.
01:41We make it happen.
01:43And it's because the crew is like, they're so talented.
01:46Right.
01:46And they make it safe and they make it real.
01:48Right.
01:49On that note, do you do all your own stunts?
01:51Are you kind of active?
01:51There's like 80, 90% of them, like genuinely, and we try and keep it, you know, like the
01:56stunt people that we have make it very safe for us.
01:59Right.
01:59And then, you know, the more that we are able to do, the more it sells to an audience.
02:04Right.
02:04So, for example, there's like a roller coaster climbing section in the second episode.
02:08I climbed a roller coaster.
02:09I climbed a roller coaster track to like 85 feet in the air.
02:11How long have you always wanted to?
02:13It was amazing.
02:14Honestly, they were like, you don't have to do it.
02:16I was like, no, no, I'm doing it.
02:18Right.
02:18I'm going up there.
02:19So, it was so much fun.
02:20And it's just getting to do things that you've never been able to do before, you know?
02:23Yeah, you strike me as someone that will always push to do it.
02:25Oh, absolutely.
02:26Yeah.
02:26They didn't let me do one thing, which was like rappelling down a building from the 15th
02:31floor.
02:32Smart choice.
02:33And this was in the second episode.
02:34And they were like, just in case.
02:36They were like, if it was episode eight or nine.
02:38Finale, you're in.
02:38We'd let you do it.
02:39Yeah.
02:39Because if you fall, then, you know, we'll just write that in.
02:41But that was the one thing they said, actually.
02:44And I think that's a smart choice.
02:45Right.
02:46Because I think ego can get in the way sometimes when you demand to do your own stuff.
02:49Right, right.
02:50And if you get hurt and the whole crew's out of a job for six months, like, it's not worth
02:54it.
02:54That's harsh.
02:54That's harsh.
02:54So, yeah.
02:55It was the right decision.
02:56Yeah.
02:56Now, Bucks, he's a bit of a bad boy.
02:59You know?
02:59Likes to play by his own rules a bit.
03:01And ladies' man as well.
03:02At the start.
03:03Yeah.
03:03Yeah.
03:04I mean, he's still a ladies' man.
03:05Well, sure.
03:06Fair enough.
03:07Fair enough.
03:07Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:07Let's call it as he is.
03:09Okay.
03:10He hasn't changed that much.
03:12But he's learning to reign it in, I think, and he's maturing, which is nice to me that
03:17we did start to see that progression.
03:19Right.
03:19I think it could have got old very fast if he was still just kind of, you know, running
03:24around town.
03:24You say that with a grin, like, there's Oliver crossed over there as well, I'm just saying.
03:29No, I'm a nice family man.
03:32Okay, perfect.
03:33But back in the day, I'm sure.
03:34Back in the day, going back to Hendon?
03:35Hendon.
03:36Hendon, yeah.
03:37Hendon, there you go.
03:37There you go, there you go.
03:38So, we mentioned the finale.
03:40I mean, what can we expect?
03:42Lots of bangs, I'm sure.
03:44Well, yeah.
03:45It's going to be a big kind of high-octane episode, but also it really wraps up everybody's
03:50story, which is nice.
03:52It kind of puts an exclamation mark and a full stop or a period on, you know, everybody's
03:59little story and everybody's little arc.
04:01So, it really does feel like an ending.
04:03So, then, when we move forward into the second season, it's a whole new beginning.
04:07Right, right, right.
04:07So, everything is wrapped up.
04:09Questions are answered in a very nice, sweet way.
04:12Absolutely, yeah.
04:13Because that's lovely, what you two have going on.
04:15I love it.
04:15It's great.
04:16I'm a big, big fan of that relationship.
04:18Yeah, yeah.
04:19When it first started, I didn't know where it was going to go.
04:21We don't get that information.
04:22And I'm so happy that it turned into what it did.
04:25Amazing.
04:26And it's nice that people have responded to it.
04:27Yeah, you guys, yeah.
04:28Yeah, it's nice.
04:29It's not what you see every day in shows.
04:31It's not what you'd expect.
04:32And that's what's nice about it.
04:33Absolutely.
04:34I think it's refreshing to see it on television because it's not explored enough.
04:38But it's a relationship that happens in real life.
04:41And it's a very common relationship.
04:42We just don't see it on TV.
04:43Right.
04:44So, yeah, no, I think the fact that we've gone down that route.
04:46And it's not felt forced.
04:48I don't feel like I'm really honoured and to play opposite Connie Britton.
04:52As you know.
04:53She's amazing.
04:54She's beyond talented.
04:56Amazing and beautiful.
04:57Yeah, she's everything about it.
04:58She's wonderful.
04:59Yeah, that's amazing.
05:00Getting to play that love interest.
05:01I mean, I'm sure you didn't expect it a couple of years ago.
05:04I did not.
05:04A couple of years ago, I was just worried about where my next job was coming from.
05:08Yeah.
05:08Let alone being on a show with Connie Britton, Angela Bassett, Peter Krausser.
05:12So, no, this is like a dream.
05:13How was it going into this show?
05:15Because, you know, you mentioned that cast.
05:16It's so powerful.
05:18For me, when we first started, I spent like the first two weeks just like deer in headlights,
05:23I think, just like, you know, this is a big deal.
05:26Right.
05:26And then there was a really nice moment when that kind of went away and I just settled
05:30into it because they're all so lovely.
05:32Right.
05:32Like genuinely, genuinely good people.
05:35So that made that transition a lot easier for me and it's all been so welcoming that
05:39it hasn't felt like a big deal.
05:41Right.
05:41Even though it is, like it hasn't felt like that, which is, I think, the best way that
05:45it can go.
05:45Right.
05:47Loads of shows kind of have that crossover or, you know, shows nowadays have some amazing
05:51guest stars.
05:52If you could have anyone come in on 9-1-1 for an episode in season two, what would you
05:57like?
05:59I would like Evan Peters to come and do an episode.
06:03Okay.
06:03Because he does so much of Ryan's stuff.
06:05Okay.
06:05I just saw Evan, haven't I, actually?
06:06Oh, really?
06:07Okay.
06:07I don't know him.
06:08He's amazing.
06:08He's great.
06:09But I think he's an incredibly talented actor and because he does so many of Ryan's
06:12shows, I think it would be really nice to see him come and do it.
06:15Exactly.
06:15It's a possible one to come and do a little guest spot or whatever.
06:18I mean, he's very busy, I'm sure.
06:20Right.
06:21But if he gets a date, he wants to come and do a scene.
06:22But that's a very likely one.
06:23Who's one if you could have anyone?
06:24Okay.
06:26If I could have, okay, I would have, this is an impossible one.
06:29This is not going to happen.
06:30You never know that.
06:31I don't think he's guesting on TV anymore.
06:32You said yourself, you didn't know that you'd be with Connie Britton.
06:34Fair enough.
06:34I would love Michael Shannon to come in.
06:38Just because I would be there in awe.
06:40Right.
06:40Just kind of standing back and, yeah.
06:44He could just walk in and just save the day.
06:46A little bit, yeah.
06:47He could play my dad.
06:48He could play your dad.
06:49Or your brother, maybe.
06:52Probably my dad.
06:53I mean, I was trying to be nice to Michael.
06:55Sorry, Michael.
06:56I mean, I was trying to get him on the show.
06:58If he's watching now, he's like, I'm not covering the show.
07:00Yeah, no, no.
07:02Come play my brother, Michael, please.
07:03Okay, amazing.
07:04We're going to do THR's top five.
07:06Five easy questions.
07:07Okay, I hope they are easy.
07:09They are.
07:09I promise.
07:10TV show you watched as a kid that you wish you were in.
07:13Hustle, which is a British show.
07:15Do you remember that?
07:15I don't.
07:16I don't, actually.
07:16Okay, it was a show.
07:17How long ago was this?
07:1910, 15 years ago?
07:20I might have been over here.
07:21Might have missed it.
07:22Oh, all right.
07:22Okay, it's about this kind of crew of grifters, con men.
07:27But it was just so, it was like Ocean's Eleven put on television.
07:30Oh.
07:30And they were all very sleek and cool.
07:33I'm going to have to watch this.
07:33Yeah, no, it was great.
07:35Okay.
07:35It went for a number of seasons, like four or five seasons.
07:38I loved it.
07:38All right, I'm watching that.
07:39Hustle.
07:40Hustle.
07:41One word to describe your journey as an actor so far.
07:49Struggle.
07:51That's an honest one.
07:52Yeah.
07:52Yeah, there you go.
07:53Favorite movie soundtrack?
07:56Drive.
07:57Drive.
07:58It's a good one.
07:59I would have guessed Lion King.
08:00That's number two on the list.
08:01Number six.
08:02Yeah, yeah.
08:02One actor.
08:03If you said top two, then drive Lion King.
08:05I would have got it.
08:05You do love Lion King, don't you?
08:06Everybody loves Lion King.
08:07Everyone loves Lion King.
08:08I mean, that's, yeah.
08:09One actor who inspires you?
08:10I really like the way that Brad Pitt has gone into producing, so I would say that to take
08:19his career from acting into producing really cool independent movies, I would say Brad Pitt
08:23on for that reason.
08:24Okay, that's a good one.
08:26Strong one.
08:27We're in a new age of people binge-watching.
08:29Last show you binge-watched?
08:32Oh, it's been a while because when we're shooting, I find it really hard to watch anything else.
08:36I think Ozark on Netflix, the Jason Bateman season, which was like so unexpected every episode,
08:41so yeah, I think Ozark.
08:42You had to keep watching it.
08:43Yeah.
08:43Yeah.
08:44And there were just moments in there.
08:45I was like, what?
08:46Like I had no idea that was coming, so yeah, probably Ozark.
08:50That's a good one.
08:50We wrap up on that.
08:51Oliver Stark.
08:52All right.
08:52Thank you for having me.
08:539-1-1.
08:53Watch him.
08:55Just a genius.
08:56See you there.
