Post-match press conference with Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim after their 1-1 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Diogo Dalot put United ahead on 58 minutes, reacting quickest after Casemiro’s effort dropped loose in the box. West Ham equalised in the 83rd minute when Soungoutou Magassa scored from a corner following Jarrod Bowen’s near post flick. United were again punished for not securing a second goal after taking the lead, with a late set piece proving costly.

Amorim reflects on his side losing too many second balls after scoring and expresses frustration at conceding from a corner against a taller West Ham side. He stresses how small details changed the outcome, admits United “need to score more goals” and remain “inconsistent”, and discusses why he made adjustments to regain control late in the match. He also references recent leads let slip and says the team must improve their duels, focus and concentration to turn performances into wins as they look to climb the Premier League table.

00:00Good evening, Ruben, we're very glad to have you after some of the games, but it was a period
00:06of frustration after a result.
00:07Yeah, it's frustration, it's angry, that's it.
00:14Helping you get a team to maybe perform better, I suppose, and put that to bed.
00:20It's working again and trying to win the next one.
00:25Sorry.
00:25Ruben, the only second half your team has won this season was the one at Bristol Palace
00:30on Sunday, where Palace obviously tie up at Premier League, why do you think your team
00:34are having so many difficulties in the second half of games and winning games?
00:39Yeah, but there are second halves that we lose control of the game today, I think it was
00:43not that case.
00:45Maybe after the first goal, we lost some second balls and Matils won one or two second balls
00:51there and make a transition.
00:52We tried to defend all the time, far from the goal, because we knew it.
00:57They tried to make a cross, win a corner, like it happened.
01:01Long ball, they win a second ball against three guys of us in the defence.
01:08So we need to be better in the second half.
01:11Samuel, Ruben, you made fire changes overall.
01:15Four of them were defensive players who came on.
01:17I know it probably didn't have the impact that you wanted, but in hindsight, would you
01:21not have been that conservative when you were 1-0 up?
01:24No.
01:26We are losing because of the second ball.
01:28Sometimes there's not more men in front that you are going to win the ball.
01:33We have more men to put in the offence.
01:36Who?
01:37Who would be more offence?
01:40Offence.
01:41I understand.
01:42It was not quite a lot, but it was Cobby Manning.
01:45Yes, it was the second ball and Mateus was, I was worried with Mateus.
01:49I know that Bruno reached the box really well.
01:53Mason Mount is playing in this position.
01:56So I try, they were trying to push us.
01:58Brian is, have a lot of pace to try to win the ball in one transition.
02:03So that was my idea.
02:06Ruben, you came in and said, look, straight and angry.
02:09What were you frustrated and angry at?
02:11Because your team obviously has made progress this season, but over the last few weeks,
02:16it seems to have come back.
02:18No, it's not going back.
02:19With the results going backwards, we had some moments.
02:22Again, that can happen when one team, you were talking about when we had that run,
02:31that the team was really perfect and the world is saying we are really,
02:35we are not far from being in the perfect moment.
02:38We are really inconsistent.
02:41But if you look at the goal, 83 minutes, we have a long ball.
02:46We have everything under control.
02:48We need to do better.
02:50Thanks.
02:50Ruben, do you have that sort of sense with the team at the moment,
02:54just that one goal is not going to be enough?
02:57You led against Forest, you led against Spurs, you led to playing,
03:00you did not win any of those games.
03:01Do you always feel that they love that and are going to struggle for that?
03:06Yeah, I always have the feeling, I think everyone has the feeling that
03:10we need to score more goals and that is sure.
03:14Even with Brighton, we were 3-0 and then suddenly,
03:18so we suffer with that.
03:19We are inconsistent.
03:21We need to improve.
03:23Robin and Jamie.
03:25When you were talking about second balls and jewels and losing out,
03:28that's obviously not a tactical thing.
03:30Is it a desired thing?
03:31Is it a lack of energy?
03:32No, second ball sometimes is tactical things.
03:34We try to adjust with the players that we put and then we control.
03:38We had in the final minutes, we had the possession, the ball was far from the opponent,
03:44was not a clear full press from the opponent.
03:48We cannot let a team that is so much taller than us to have a corner when the ball is in
03:55the goalkeeper.
03:55So, this kind of details makes the difference and today, a corner in the second half made
04:01the difference.
04:01No, I'm guessing the players are as well because they don't want to see it like that.
04:07Is it your style to go into the changing room after this kind of goal being in the city
04:12and sort of directly?
04:14No.
04:15Do you leave the next day?
04:16No, in that regard, I'm almost always consistent.
04:23I had one, and you know, Brighton last year.
04:27So, I will talk to them tomorrow a little bit.
04:30You just calm when you level it.
04:33Yeah, yeah.
